For those of you out there saying this is pricey, it's really not. Most small capture cards like this that can take high bit rate signals will run $200+ at this size and quality level. Do you know if this has any internal processing to free up CPU load on the CPU or is it only converting the signal?
Most cameras can be used as a webcam by simply hooking up the camera directy to a computer via USB and choosing webcam mode in the camera's UI. To anyone who's considering buying this, you should check that first. It'd really be a waste spending $130 on this accessory if your camera already supports this feature out of the box. I don't mean to be like that, but please like or respond to this comment to get it to the top, so that people don't get tricked into buying this if they don't need it. If you don't want to do any of that, you can also help by writing another comment about this.
Can you mention some cameras? I'm only asking as I don't know of any dslr/mirrorless that does this. Certainly not the Lumix or Alpha cameras, which are very suited for streaming as they have no pesky mirror in the way, I'm familiar with. But if you know of any other, it would be cool, as I'm looking for an extra camera for a third angle for streaming and not having ting gat another capture card would be nice :)
I heard you might be able to do that with the old Canon t3i with the software that comes in the box, but pretty sure that it doesn’t output 1080p, and pretty sure most cameras cant do this. So maybe, but probably not.
Hmm. I don't know if I'd want a 5D M. IV running for 6 - 10+ hours daily or a few days a week on a consistent basis but this seems pretty damn awesome with a beater camera. A cheap Canon/Nikon DSLR with a cheap lens blows a webcam out of the water. As somebody that's seen UA-cam gaming begin with Dazzle capture cards that used component cables for a standard 360/480p capture, to the Dazzle HD (720p) to the Hauppauge HD PVR, to the ElGato line and so forth: it's nice to see that even though they're usually kind of expensive, ElGato makes good stuff. You pay a good price but you get a great product that lasts years. Their green screen is incredible! Too bad it was sold out the day it became available and still hasn't come back in stock.
Going to pick one of these up with a $10 splitter that strips HDCP so I can stream my PS3 and PS4 w/o disabling HDCP on the system itself, thanks for the review!
I bought Cam Link 4K after considering buying something used or off aliexpress, but I though that I should go with a popular brand that everyone is using for customer support, reliability and software updates. I bit the bullet and spent 120 EUR - the cheapest I could find. Now I think that I should had went for aliexpress stuff. I tried to make it work on Windows 10 and MacOS using all different combination of USB 3.0 ports, externally powered USB 3.0 hub without any luck. I tried using two cameras: Canon M50 and Canon 7D. After receiving a first email from support team I gave them all the details: computer specs, USB ports, sent a log file, filmed a demonstration video. Now I have received a second reply and the guy didn't even bother to read my report and check out the video. He suggested that I try webcamera app in the operating systems as though Elgato Game Capture HD was not necessary supposed to work with the product. I will wait for their answer and probably will have to return the item. I'm surprised at all those positive reviews online! Maybe I have to make my own to make people aware of my experience.
Some DSLR cameras have free software for this. Mine (t5i) does, but it doesn't work for some reason. While searching around for alternative software, I found SparkoCam. It's $49.95 and *free upgrades* are included for a year, but I'm pretty sure that you can keep the software afterward. Elgato's solution is $129.95...
So, I have a webcam & it works fine. Hooked my new Elgato Cam Link into my PC and into my Canon R camera and.... nothing. It won't let me record a UA-cam video, like I could with my webcam (I keep getting an 'error, try again'). What am I doing wrong? The Canon R is on the 'list'. Do I have to change any settings on my camera? I checked on my 'Devices & Printers' & the Cam Link IS there. Arrgh!!
so with my lens open and out, it won't connect and show in the elgato software. but if i hit the playback button, that shows pictures or video you've already taken, it closes my lens, and my camera screen goes black, but the screen will show on my PC and i can use the camera's menu buttons to move around the menu and photos. my issue is i can't mirror what my camera sees to record from my pc, can only play pictures or video that's already been taken. I have a Canon Powershot SX610 HS. Can confirm it does connect through the cam link, but only gets a signal in the software when i enter that preview mode. but then can't record with it. just trying to see if my camera can even record with the cam link before i go looking for another camera. had this camera since like 2016
So, is this used as a hdmi Capture Card? I would like to start streaming on UA-cam and Facebook with my MacBook Pro and my Sony DSLR a 58. Thanks for your time.
Is there any benefit of the cam link if you can already just splice your game play and video of yourself together in final editing if you already have the HD60 S or is it just convenience?
"This does retail for 129 dollars or 130... I think it's a little bit too pricey. I think 100 dollars would have been the sweet spot". Uh... sir? You have no idea what's happening in 2020... just look on eBay today and its Buy Me Now price is between 330 to 350 bucks!

How do you turn off the AF Display? that annoying box that follows your face around on the screen. I can turn off other displays except that. I use the camera mainly for streaming on twitch and youtube. Canon 800D/T7i connected to the PC using Camlink

Hey Rand, awesome review. I loved that you provided a cam-compatible list (totally upping the resource game for UA-camrs). Thanks for that. I've a Canon 80D. I'm concerned about the battery shut-off, thoughts?
Thanks Bill! Yes it does drain battery but you can buy a dummy battery for the wall outlet. In terms of the sensor shutting off after a few minutes, most cameras have options to turn that off in the menus
Hi +Bill Calhoun, have you tried using your Canon 80D and did you manage to get rid of all the overlay info on the screen? Would love to hear from you as I have an 80D as well and I read that the 80D does not work as a live streaming/webcam since there is no way to get rid of all the overlay info (which would look not good when streaming). Thank you so much! :)

Difference is 4K vs 1080p capability. Elgato Link can do 4K. But it’s not always needed so if Elgato h60s works no need to change it.
I have a Nikon D750. Would using the Nikon with this setup and my nice pro 24-70mm lens produce better video than my iPhone 11 that can film in 4k?

And RED doesn't have 1080p out only 8K RAW?
But RED cameras will output 1080p with no problem. Its selectable.

On the side that is not the USB 3.0, what is the capture card's cable? Is it HDMI, mini HDMI, or micro HDMI?

What would be the difference from the a/v cable and this one???
