i'm not gonna lie, your woods clip how you showed it originally with all the silence was very anxiety inducing. Good job

I agree. Sometimes the absence of sound is equally as important

Right I was actually gonna say I think there’s a lot of room in a edit to convey the feeling you want as well. The first way works a little better if that’s what you’re trying to convey.

What I started noticing is how much movie makers love tyre screaching. I've recently rewatched Breaking Bad and I'm not exagerating when I say I don't think there is a single car scene without it. They screach when driving off or taking a turn, no matter the speed or even if it fits the scene. They even screach on dirt.
It doesn't bother me, but once you notice it you really can't unnotice it.

    • @YourMJK

To be fair, they are also always hauling ass when driving away or parking.

Breaking Bad is a fine example of good foley. Fairly often foley will be turned down or not all of it will be used. The foley team(performer and mixer/recordist at the very least) has stated that they used almost everything they made for the series. Foley is lots of fun to create, edit and mix.

Exactly. Like in Interstellar, when Dr. Mann explodes the ship, it’s dead silence which adds to the weight of the scene

Hey brother Paul, I thought this was an amazing video. You are incredibly talented, not only as a filmmaker (which your short film final version showed proof of) but as a storyteller and educator. Seriously, most people would be happy to be good at any one of these three talents, and you have them nailed down amazingly. I thought I was good with foley and sound design in my short films, but wow, yours is on another level. Brilliant to randomly come across this kind of filmmaking video because of the algorithm, I'm about to binge watch the rest of your videos because this was incredible.

If I remember correctly, the sound of the webs attaching to things in the original Spider-Man trilogy, was actually someone who had made a whip from the tapes inside VHS'es, and was striking different objects with it.

Imagine recording the sound of someone writing
but trying to recreate every stroke
    like a swing,
    trying to match the speed,
    intensity,
    of the ink or led,
    pressing down on paper,
    or whatever surface,
    hearing the scratching,
    like nails on a chalkboard,
    or scraping,
    of a key,
    slashing a metal door,
    or hearing the tire,
    rip & tear,
    while the air,
is streaming out it's last few...
    drops,
    of pure,
    full,
    last breaths,
    of hissing,
    giving out,
    at a constant frequency,
    never ending,
    until.....
    it's...
    all...
    gone.
    Hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I didn’t notice a change with the music until you added the voice dialogue at the very end. Then it totally changed. That was the only reason I realized the two of them were together in the same scene. Also it actually seemed like the guy had fear in his eyes looking up when I did not get that watching it the first time.

Ohhhhhhh! Now it clicks! Let me elaborate. The Sound video was actually the very first one I stumbled upon three weeks ago. After enjoying it I moved on. Fast forward to today, I come across another video from you (unaware it was you) - 'How Filmmakers Make Cameras Disappear | Mirrors in Movies: Part 2', and I was genuinely impressed, prompting me to subscribe. As I clicked on your profile to explore more videos, I rediscovered the Sound video that I had watched and even commented on before. I must say, I love your content! The titles and thumbnails are really eye-catching. The power of SEO is evident!

This is amazing!! I can vouch for the importance of Foley in a film having worked at a Foley studio for a while. It's such a unique part of the filmmaking process and nine times out of ten elevates the film to a much higher degree, though sadly is never treated as important as music or dialogue.

@paul_et Hi Paul, personally, I liked the first shot before the additional sound effects, perhaps only one sound (like a gun charge) to bring you back and make you look up, but even just the line of dialogue was enough. Sometimes, less is more. Even if it's not realistic when you sit in the forest by your own and hear no sound. But I think it happens in moments when you are really deep in your thoughts. From my own experience, I've been in the forest where I could not hear anything, and it created such an eerie feeling. For example, the movie "A Quiet Place" used perfectly less sound since it was the plot but also is what created tension, especially in the shots of the daughter who was deaf.
