I look forward to all your videos on it :) Thank you for always keeping us up to date on all the hype discussions around these games.
I'm mixed about the Norse units. Not sure the Ulfsark needed to turn into "Berserk", and didn't feel like there needed to be a new spearman unit when the Ulfsark already filled the anti-cav role. That being said, I kind of like there's female Ulfsarks, and those Frost Giants look so much better -- much leaner, but way meaner.
Exactly, and also taps in the asymmetry proposal for the Norse for lacking a specialist anti cavalry unit. Ulfsarks interestingly only had a multiplier versus the Turma but not against other cavlary units which means the tooltip was outdated :)
I like that unit upgrades are so much easier to read visually. Units bouncing off buildings is also cool. Better fleshed out Major God bonuses is also good. Couple things that should get improved: Egyptian Titan animations Pathfinding UI doesn't really fit, looks like AoE4 Some god portraits don't look good Let's see if they stick to september 4th or if it gets delayed. I'd prefer a smooth launch a bit later than a messy launch earlier.
Absolutely. Of those, I think pathfinding (+ideally improvements to enemy AI) are the biggest things I'm hoping for, because they're things under the hood that make or break a strategy game.
Agreed on the god portraits. Maybe I'd need time to get used to them but at the same time some of the portraits like Zeus (some parts of which for some reason looks AI generated) or Hades just isn't good enough or needs more. I would appreciate if there was an option to use the old classical portraits as well in the final build (and though I like Sobek, we would just have to use Hathor again for completeness' sake).
I really hope they offer multiple UIs like Age 3: DE. The only way I can even play Age 3: DE is with a classic Age 2-style UI. Their modern stuff is horrid.
I have been playing this game since it first came out as a kid. And still play this game till this day. Nice to see this game "Retold" look slightly better and more color in it. Im looking forward to playing it. Its all fun to see a new person to see how the game works. When they think something new, but the veterans know the trips and stuff. Im interest in the new favor system they will do.
So you asked about Godis, I think those are the replacer units for a norse archer that came with tale of the dragon, and the Jarl, I just hope they are still effect as a "I am generally good against several things" like how in the OG, the Jarl was decent against myth units, pretty good against archers, and generally good against mounted non anti cav. Though I find it very interesting the Norse roster is being reworked and expanded, the Ulfserks which were refered to as berserkers in the OG, are now a "I am generally ok against anything" rather than Anti cav.
@@ChillyEmpire Have you seen some of the cool naval stuff that the Rome at War mod added to AoE 2: DE? Spirit of the Law has made a couple videos on it. It’s insane what they’ve been able to add. They turned naval combat into much more than just “rock, paper, scissors”.
16:08 "they're not falling into their historical inspirations as much" - meanwhile the hoplite: "am i a joke to you? I don't even get a shield without an upgrade" :D
Good review, since i played the beta and still play today on Sunday i say its 10/10 but they really need to do several things: 1. bring back the OG voices for campaign heroes 2. improve the pathfinding of certain units 3. add to human units the visual minor god given tech upgrades as well ( sword of deimos, sarrissa, axe of vengeance, apedemak's tusks etc ) for more in depth visual enhancement 4. make the AI have more personalities like in EE and be even more dynamic and stronger ( current AI attacker is good but it can be improved ) 5. add maybe lower population cost for human ordinary soldiers than 2/3 and give us the ability to select more than 100 troops and make us choose formations like in AOE 4 or Total War games where you can drag them and select how long or short the unit line can be
Ulfsarks (literally wolf shirts or wolf pelts), not at catchy as Berserks... Must have been the AoE2 DE exposure OG 2002 game had female Gatherers be able to be upgraded to Ulfsarks that were from a singular male asset (female Ulfsark assets were non-existent, and the sex change was jarring), and the same could be said for the Heroes of Ragnarök units in the same game
I think my favorite aspect is that each unit gets such a detailed visual upgrade for each individual research. I also like that the units are bigger. Something about have small units made them feel weak to me. Also, fun fact, the only helmet that they are 100% was Viking (it was buried with) did have the neck guard like that.
As someone who has played AoM since the beginning and growing up playing it and even getting 1.3k+ hours just on the steam version (only single player) I have to say that the changes look great and make sense, visually the game look amazing, my only complaint so far is the new voice actor for the campaign it feel like there isn't any passion behind their lines. Looks good so far, I hope it ends up playing as good as it looks, I'm sure there will be plenty of necessary balance changes in the future but it looks great so far!
It looks amazing, it will be a slap of nostalgia when I finally get to play it. Only thing I'll be modding the heck outta are those god portraits. Old ones are so iconic they left the game behind them
I played the Norse the most, so I remember them the most. Great Hall is entirely new building, Godi is entirely new (hero) unit, Norse only had Hersis as hero unit. Some god upgrades are also new, and Berserkers were called Ulfsark and they would always be male even if you make them from female villager. Other then then, it's pretty much the same. Egyptian Pharaohs always had unique names and if they died the "successor" would show up (he would have II or III next to his name). Hersis also had unique names.
I wish they added visual design, when upgrading to a minor god, E.G; when you research Dionysus the Greek temple will have Grape vines growing on the volume, or Hel small ghost will walk around the building, helps the enemy to fast tell what the oppoenet has advance and what god.
Never played AoM before but this beta is amazing, the units are so pretty and unique, the powers, graphics, the gameplay... I feel this is gonna be big.
I am still kinda missing alternative hero units for the greeks. Especially if Titans end up being more common (which I doubt) the Norse new Javelin thrower heroes, Atlanteans with on demand heroes and especially the egyptians with priests have a much easier time dispatching them, than the greeks with a max of 4 heroes
he pointed out that titans seemed weaker now by comparison, even if I saw 42k hp instead of the old 7k. I'm guessing some numbers have been tweaked. With Greek I remember hero + collosi to do well vs titans tho.
@@alinstoian4393 But most greek heroes are melee, making it very hard to attack a titan with ranged support, especially since you only have 4 heroes at any given time. And good luck getting cavalry into the archers with a titan on the field Egyptians and Norse can just spam ranged heroes now, to deal with that and kite it
I can't wait for this to land this game is incredible and if it gets the same love as Age of Empires 2 it's going to be even better than it was originally.
this is such a great showcase! i wish there were more videos like this instead of people casting games … before this video my impression of the game was that the graphic fidelity wasn’t that much of an improvement to AOM remastered and that it was a cashgrab. But this video changed my mind.

Age of Mythology was my childhood aside from Star Wars Forces of Corruption, so this remastery is beautifully done in my opinion. i'm looking forward to buying it or maybe i'll pre-order it later on.
What I like most about the new Norse units is that with the Godi as a ranged anti-myth unit, there would be no need for bogsveigir to return. Norse are back to being the civ with no archers, having to rely on throwing axes and ballistae as their ranged options. That would also imply that physicians, onagers and khopesh won't be coming back.
@@ChillyEmpire thanks for the review and show casing of all units. I really hope they focusing on the realistic graphics rather than stylized graphics just like they did in AOE4.
Seems they discarded "helmet for unit tier, armor for armor tier" mechanic on live. The armor always corresponds to unit tier and does not change with blacksmith upgrades. Pity, was cool, tho(
the generic AI looking artwork is the biggest deal breaker for me, some of the god portraits look like something out of a moba. The artwork of the different gods in the 1st one is so iconic.
Hirdmen were not the guardsmen of a house. Huskarls were the guards of a thane, jarl or king. Huskarl is basically hus, house, and karl, which is man. House Man, or Household Man. HIrd is basically an old Nordic word for army. In modern Norwegian Hird has evolved into Hær. Hirdsman, or Hærmann, quite directly translates as army man. A hirdsman is basically the Norse word for a mustered warrior, what we today call a soldier.
What calls my attention is that the Units that were added in the Chinese DLC are now missing which nerfs some of the factions quite badly The Greeks lose Hippocrates, which means that healing wounded troops would be more difficult to do now and is now almost Impossible to the Infantry Units of Poseidon (which have no access to Athena and Apollo and thus, no access to Restoration or Temple of Healing). Of course this is partially compesated by the fact that Restoration can now be casted more than once (but that will cost extra per use as well as having the units positioned correctly to benefit from the God Power) and Thracian Horses now regenerates hitpoints of Calvary Units when they attack (but that's the thing, it only affects Calvary and, since we don't have an actual Calvary Archer with the Greeks (you can access the Centaur with Poseidon. But that unit does not count for Thracian Horses since it's a Myth Unit and not always you want to advance with Hermes), then we actually have no Anti-Infantry Unit that benefits of this tech. And that's not to mention you don't always want to advance with Dionysius). So. Poseidon is recieving a major nerf to its durability by losing Hippocrates that can only be trully compesated by either giving the Greeks a Calvary Archer or by moving the Minor Gods around so they give Apollo for Poseidon (and with that, giving us the Temple of Healing) and Aphrodite to Zeus The Egyptians lose the Khopesh Warrior and, with this loss, the Civilization, once again, loses its Ability to actually raid opponent camps in Classical Age since the best option after it (the Camel Rider) is locked behind Heroic Age The Norse lose the Bogsveigir which could've be a major issue since if they didn't give us the Godi since, otherwise, we would be having a lot of Trouble dealing with Flying Units (specially the Styphalan Birds and the Phoenixes)
Now this is the incentive to upgrade your units, to have the top drip first. Or just having the most epic looking units. God this lines up with my childhood imagination of this.

You may remember I decided to drop AoE4 for now, but just wanted to stop by and say that I will 100% be playing AoM Retold, and I am very happy you are making content on this game. I look forward to all your videos on it :) Thank you for always keeping us up to date on all the hype discussions around these games.
This is the content about rts games I need
Couple things that should get improved:
Egyptian Titan animations
Pathfinding
UI doesn't really fit, looks like AoE4
Some god portraits don't look good
Let's see if they stick to september 4th or if it gets delayed. I'd prefer a smooth launch a bit later than a messy launch earlier.
Absolutely. Of those, I think pathfinding (+ideally improvements to enemy AI) are the biggest things I'm hoping for, because they're things under the hood that make or break a strategy game.
Personally, the UI felt fine. I didn't "feel" it when I was playing which is a good sign if you ask me!
3:50 Hercules is wearing Nemean Lion skin, which is by the myth, impenetrable by arrows or swords or spears
He should have a better Pierce damage resistance for historical accuracy
hoplite helmet looks like a shining bald 1:54
I want my Ulfsarks back!!!
Same.
Such a bizarre and unneeded change
Why they renamed the ulfsarks?
Though I find it very interesting the Norse roster is being reworked and expanded, the Ulfserks which were refered to as berserkers in the OG, are now a "I am generally ok against anything" rather than Anti cav.
they should add the Aztec civilization, they have interesting mythos
I was hoping to get a look at naval units, really looking forward to island and sea games now that titans can cross water
My god I completely forgot about naval LOL. Too used to ignoring it in AOEIV.
I grew up with age of mythology no new game compares it was its own and I’ve been waiting my whole life for this revamp
These are the best reviews. So to the point and entertaining. Thank you!
Man what a GREAT review, every unit in detail with the weapons upgrade, thank you!
16:08 "they're not falling into their historical inspirations as much" - meanwhile the hoplite: "am i a joke to you? I don't even get a shield without an upgrade" :D
The Change to the Heteroi is so good instead of andi building they do aoe damage
That's awesome. I haven't even read the Hetairoi changes.
*PTSD to Legacy Aoe3 Currasiers*
@@lettuceman9439 nah they deal like no damage
Looks pretty good but Titan nerfs would be a giant (one might say titanic...) turnoff for me. Those Titans were sooo much fun in the old game :)
Good review, since i played the beta and still play today on Sunday i say its 10/10 but they really need to do several things:
1. bring back the OG voices for campaign heroes
2. improve the pathfinding of certain units
3. add to human units the visual minor god given tech upgrades as well ( sword of deimos, sarrissa, axe of vengeance, apedemak's tusks etc ) for more in depth visual enhancement
4. make the AI have more personalities like in EE and be even more dynamic and stronger ( current AI attacker is good but it can be improved )
5. add maybe lower population cost for human ordinary soldiers than 2/3 and give us the ability to select more than 100 troops and make us choose formations like in AOE 4 or Total War games where you can drag them and select how long or short the unit line can be
Second the point 5. Such game requires more crowded battles. 1 for foot soldier, 2 for cavalry. (Maybe 2 and 3 for elite analogs)
Looks unbelievably good for a beta! I really hope this game becomes a popular competitive game, it would be ultra fun to watch and play!
holy shit the norse is a FUCKING vibe
why the naming changes? why did they change the godess from Nepthys to Sobek?
Nepthys was in AOM. Hathor is the one that was replaced by Sobek. It makes sense - it's a croc god that has croc myth units.
This game looks so incredible, I am beyond hyped.
No Ulfsarks? I don't get the reason behind the change.
Ulfsarks (literally wolf shirts or wolf pelts), not at catchy as Berserks... Must have been the AoE2 DE exposure
OG 2002 game had female Gatherers be able to be upgraded to Ulfsarks that were from a singular male asset (female Ulfsark assets were non-existent, and the sex change was jarring), and the same could be said for the Heroes of Ragnarök units in the same game
@@royasturias1784 this is more jarring...
They removed archer unit from the norse fortress, the bogsveigir :(
He is recycled into the Godi now. His animations are given to the Draugar from my initial inspection.
@@zonetropper i know, but i still wanted an archer unit for the norse
AOM with Japanese and Indian gods would be cool to see
I think my favorite aspect is that each unit gets such a detailed visual upgrade for each individual research. I also like that the units are bigger. Something about have small units made them feel weak to me. Also, fun fact, the only helmet that they are 100% was Viking (it was buried with) did have the neck guard like that.
18:51 the dedication of the villager to keep praying to their gods after getting knocked from the titan is on another level
15:07 It's based off a Vendel period helmet found in Broe (?) regarding the cheek guards.
Just looked it up you're totally right - that's awesome!
I wish they added visual design, when upgrading to a minor god, E.G; when you research Dionysus the Greek temple will have Grape vines growing on the volume, or Hel small ghost will walk around the building, helps the enemy to fast tell what the oppoenet has advance and what god.
Something like this is important
And good luck getting cavalry into the archers with a titan on the field
Egyptians and Norse can just spam ranged heroes now, to deal with that and kite it
@@silvershine2261 that;s true. And from what I see, titans will move units away by walking, so you can't truly surround / body block them
Anyone else get annoyed when AOM players dont know enough about the mythology? THe valkyrie's effect is an aurora not a rainbow.
You said "Saxon helmet" : You got me involved on Norse for at least the following 5 years
so glad they re did this game ! WAS A GAME I PLAYED FOR YEARS!!!!!
I can't wait for this to land this game is incredible and if it gets the same love as Age of Empires 2 it's going to be even better than it was originally.
Let's hope the balance is better this time
this is such a great showcase!
i wish there were more videos like this instead of people casting games …
before this video my impression of the game was that the graphic fidelity wasn’t that much of an improvement to AOM remastered and that it was a cashgrab.
But this video changed my mind.
Very happy you did the OCANADA cheat, never knew the bear had monkeys at its side lol. This honestly looks incredible though. Might just buy a PC for this someday.
It looks so good. cant wait for it
I don't have a pc now, i'm so glad i'll be playing this game on my Xbox. I love AOM so much!
Known Issues
Not all localization is present for supported game languages.
Brightness options are not yet available in the Settings options.
It has been observed that the player is unable to access the “Villager Priority” menu during a skirmish or campaign match after exiting the tutorial.
Steam Deck Users will be unable to join multiplayer matches hosted by non-Steam Deck users.
Villagers may get temporarily stuck between other villagers when gathering in narrow spots.
Villagers may get periodically stuck in the dropoff animation in rare cases.
Villagers may poorly distribute across trees when tasking a larger group onto a single tree.
Building Rally Points are not visible.
Units may rarely get stuck when pathing near corners of buildings.
Player colors may mismatch on the Spectator mode panels.
Everything looks great except they need to work on recovery animations for the titans as well as add in the bones when unites die.
praying this game becomes a major success. Hopefully the team would work on the identified major bugs and acknowledge the most concerned items of the community .
the real question is: did they bring back the in game historical encyclopedia? shit literally jumpstarted my interest in history and mythology
Same here! And yes, the encyclopedia is here - a shame AOE4 didn't get something similar.
@@ChillyEmpire so awesome to read that, thanks for the quick response 😘
hirdmen look SO GOOD!
Age of Mythology was my childhood aside from Star Wars Forces of Corruption, so this remastery is beautifully done in my opinion. i'm looking forward to buying it or maybe i'll pre-order it later on.
Maybe Empire at War and Forces of Corruption will get a DE too!
@@aniruddhbhatkal1834 i think its great as is. plus the modding community is keeping it very active.
Age of Empires 2, Age of Mythology, LotR: The Battle for Middle Earth 1 & 2, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War: Dark Crusade.
We were so spoiled.
@@LeftJoystick agreed
Do the egyptians say "in to you" occasionally when you command them? xD
Old joke
@@VITAS874 Eat ass.
@@VITAS874 Well I'm a pretty old guy, so...xD
I still play the OG to this day. Can't wait for the full release 🎉
HOW COME I HAVEN'T HEARD OF THIS?
I am beyond happy oh my god!!
Chilly is there way we can send your feedback to the Devs so they can improve more like the decay animation and path finding?
I'm sure the devs are more than aware haha. I doubt the decay animation is coming though.
Pity, was cool, tho(
Wait really? That’s a shame. I haven’t zoomed in recently
@@ChillyEmpire I zoomed in yesterday for Greeks. I really want to believe they will return it. It was so cool.
Hoplite carrying a buckler is crazy
the generic AI looking artwork is the biggest deal breaker for me, some of the god portraits look like something out of a moba. The artwork of the different gods in the 1st one is so iconic.
I remember completing the campaign when I first played it as a kid. The journey of Arkantos from Atlantis, Troy, Egypt and Norseland.
Croc not gator
I am an AoM fan, its the only Age game ive ever played. I'm so impressed with how it looks and im so excited
I wasn't even aware of that someone is making an Age of Mythology remake... I'm actually happy I can play the campaign again! 💯
When we can expect this out approx eta? ;(
GOD DAMMIT I WASNT PLANING ON BUYING THE REMAKE BUT THIS LOOKS SO GOOD!!!
What does it look like if you have regular units with max blacksmith upgrades? I.e. not even medium
I can't wait this is my favorite rework in series
Hirdmen were not the guardsmen of a house. Huskarls were the guards of a thane, jarl or king. Huskarl is basically hus, house, and karl, which is man. House Man, or Household Man. HIrd is basically an old Nordic word for army. In modern Norwegian Hird has evolved into Hær. Hirdsman, or Hærmann, quite directly translates as army man. A hirdsman is basically the Norse word for a mustered warrior, what we today call a soldier.
What calls my attention is that the Units that were added in the Chinese DLC are now missing which nerfs some of the factions quite badly
The Greeks lose Hippocrates, which means that healing wounded troops would be more difficult to do now and is now almost Impossible to the Infantry Units of Poseidon (which have no access to Athena and Apollo and thus, no access to Restoration or Temple of Healing). So. Poseidon is recieving a major nerf to its durability by losing Hippocrates that can only be trully compesated by either giving the Greeks a Calvary Archer or by moving the Minor Gods around so they give Apollo for Poseidon (and with that, giving us the Temple of Healing) and Aphrodite to Zeus
The Egyptians lose the Khopesh Warrior and, with this loss, the Civilization, once again, loses its Ability to actually raid opponent camps in Classical Age since the best option after it (the Camel Rider) is locked behind Heroic Age
The Norse lose the Bogsveigir which could've be a major issue since if they didn't give us the Godi since, otherwise, we would be having a lot of Trouble dealing with Flying Units (specially the Styphalan Birds and the Phoenixes)
11:51 ah yes I love me some Calvary with my bread. But great video, it was a really nice showcase.
THIS IS AMAZING, I'VE WAITED LONG ENOUGH TO WITNESS THIS.
Finally a command and conquer style game. Mythology is a genius idea. Can't freaking wait. Playing day 1
As if you never heard of the age of empire serie...
Can we ponys have this game or the gamepass on Playstation please?
Now this is the incentive to upgrade your units, to have the top drip first. Or just having the most epic looking units. God this lines up with my childhood imagination of this.
