- Lost: Desmond calls his constant: Penny, 8 years later, "The Constant" (Season 4, Episode 5) (28 Feb. 2008)
Desmond wakes in the bathroom, the sink overflowing with water. After refreshing his face, he goes to see Penny. She opens the door to a distraught Desmond and says she wants to have a "clean break" from Desmond, but he insists she listen to him, pleading for her phone number. After entering the flat, he tells her that he needs her phone number so he can call her in eight years (December 24, 2004). Ultimately even though she doesn't understand why he just can't call her tomorrow and after promising to leave if she gives him the number she gives him Desmond her number: 7946 0893. She pushes him out the door while he pleads that she not change the number.
Desmond comes back and tells Sayid the London phone number. Sayid repairs the phone, dials it, and passes it to Desmond. Desmond engages in a joyous and tearful call with Penny where she tells him she has been looking for him for three years, also confirming to Desmond her conversation with Charlie from the Looking Glass. Penelope is wearing a ring on the ring finger of her right hand. She knows about the Island, has researched it, and is desperately trying to find him. They each say they love the other as the phone battery dies out. Desmond then thanks Sayid by name, now with his memory back. He is, he says, "perfect"

Penny Widmore: Hello?
Desmond Hume: Penny?
Penny Widmore: Desmond?
Desmond Hume: Penny... Penny, answer. Answer, Penny
Penny Widmore: Des, where are you?
Desmond Hume: I'm... I'm on a boat. Um... I've been on an island, and - - Oh, my god, Penny. Is that really you?
Penny Widmore: Yeah! Yes, it's me!
Desmond Hume: You believe me? You still care about me?
Penny Widmore: Des, I've been looking for you for the past three years. I know about the island. I've been researching and then when I spoke to your friend Charlie, that's when I knew you were still alive. That's when I knew I wasn't crazy. Des, are you still there?
Desmond Hume: Yes, yes, I'm here! I'm still here, can you hear me?
Penny Widmore: Yeah, yeah, that's better.
Desmond Hume: I love you, Penny. I've always loved you. I'm so sorry. I love you!
Penny Widmore: I love you too.
Desmond Hume: I don't know where I am, but...
Penny Widmore: I'll find you, Des.
Desmond Hume: I promise
Penny Widmore:
•no matter what...
Desmond Hume: I'll come back to you.
Penny Widmore: I won't give up.
Desmond Hume, Penny Widmore: I promise. I love you.

I named my rescue dog Penny right after watching this episode when it originally aired. She passed away today. She truly was, and still is, my Constant.
What a wonderful comment!
Wow I also named my rescue dog Penny for the exact same reason. She is now in her final years and I'm dreading saying goodbye to her.
I'm just absolutely mind blown that someone else across the world did the exact same thing I did. I even told my wife recently the story about how I named her.
Feeling with you and wishing you all the best
Wow, how poetic!
You’ll see her in another life.
this 3 minutes is more than all the romantic movies, novels and poems for me.
i agree brotha
Yea man this three minutes cheptar is more than the world
PERIODT.
Amen
Ditto
THIS IS AND FOREVER WILL BE THE BEST SCENE IN TELEVISION HISTORY
Chris Evans amen
What about the time Fonzie jumped a shark.
I agree!
Still gets me out of context 8 years later
The best was the first Goku super sayajin transformation vs freezer, second this, third San Junipero ending
Fully grown men I know including myself cry at this scene
Yeah for sure , and yes me also
I cry everytime.
I cant stop my TEARS 😖😖😖😖😖😖
I still cry every time
Same here, just started welling up
The greatest scene in television history. Before Netflix, before Prime and the rest, there was Lost...And it will always remain one of the most amazing shows of all time!
Amen
Except for the final season
apparently you didnt understand the final season.....@@LatkaKaufman
i have one word that will bring back more Nostalgia and better acting... SUPERNATURAL(season 1-5)
@@haroonrazzaq8542no just no
Desmond's complete disbelief that she answered is so bitter sweet. He truly thought she gave up on him , but the fact she didn't is what saved his life ultimately. He finally gets a win after all the shit he's gone through. One of the best scenes maybe ever.
And not just picking up. She has been looking for him.
Quite the opposite, he believed. Otherwise he would have not called. That's exactly what made their story so great: despite it all, they both believed. Always.
Its been 8 years and I still cry every time I see this!!
Everytime I watch this.. someone is cutting onions
Me 2
Everytime I need an emotional catharsis, I come to this video
Lost is our constant
Same lol.. Damn..
2023 and i still get mad chills during this scene. LOST truly is one of the Greatest TV shows EVER.
Yup, whatever people think of the ending, no show since has really managed to hit the same highs that Lost did. Even GoT, Breaking Bad etc at their very best never hit home an episode/scene as emotionally powerful as this, even rewatching it a decade later... The Constant has to be considered one of the best episodes of TV ever produced.
Agreed
@@andrewc3294100% agreed, and lost is full of these types of moments that no other show could ever live up to. Im not one to tear up at media often but both times I've watched lost its gotten me to tear up so many times through the combination of the writing, performances and score in so many of its powerful moments. No show ever has or ever will live up to it in my opinion it simply cant be done
This is the greatest episode of tv ever written
Don't get me wrong, I fucking love this show and this episode, but I raise you, Heaven Sent from Doctor Who.
Ozymandias, Felina, Crawl Space, End of times and Face off from Breaking Bad >>>>
Kevin Carroll YES
Why do people feel the need to contradict comments like these? I never take them that serious, I know it's just a way of saying "I love this episode" lol
Andrea O. I don’t think this was. It is truly the best episode of television in my opinion. It’s been dubbed as such by many critics and top lists
"Penny... Penny you answered... you answered Penny." Such a beautiful moment. 😢
I love how even Sayid is as moved by that moment as us (his voice is slightly breaking!). Probably reminds him of Nadia.
Everything about this scene is great and well-acted. Love the very subtle part when Sayid looks up when Desmond says he was on the Island, and he realizes Des is starting to remember
@@samlewis6848 There's sincerity in Sayid's voice, too, when he apologizes for the power going dead.
I think he doesn't understand what's going on, he just knows it's important to Desmond
The best scene from the best show ever. The pinnacle of human creativity and achievement.
Well said
I won't disagree.
I Wont call..........for eight years!!!!
all right relax
It's the back and forth at the end that makes my heart squeeze.
Desmond: I don't know where I am but
Penny: I'll find you, Des
Desmond: I promise
Penny: No matter what
Desmond: I'll come back to you
Penny: I won't give up
Desmond: I promise
Penny: I promise
Desmond & Penny: I love you
I know ❤I have goosebumps
Desmond was my favourite character. God I miss this show
I love this couple, and how Penny's love for Desmond saves him. I cry every time I see this scene.

Me 2
I love how 1996 Desmond somehow instinctively knows he contacted Penny in the future...
Yes! Desmond had the gift of a time travel consciousness. Such a great character.
It was time travel, bro did you even watch the scene?
@@ahmadzaka9885 he meant when he turned around at the window scene and smiled. But its actually a parallel. He walked away in 96 and had faith he'd see penny again. In 04 he was still away from penny but had faith he'd speak to her again.
@@JohnDoe-iu5xi , This.
Just rewatched the whole series after over a decade, and I realised Desmond and Penny were the heart and soul of Lost
Desmond/Penny and the Sun/Jin arc were by far the best of the best
i will never forget the first time i saw this. i was about two feet from the tv, having moved progressively closer throughout the episode without realizing it, and went from silent tears to all-out bawling with that swell of music accompanying desmond’s first i love you. then the rapid cuts between his and penny’s promises and declarations, jesus. utterly devastating and absolutely perfect. one of the best scenes of tv ever.
And now you’re blind.
A decade later, this still gives me goosebumps. Its crazy how certain emotions are linked to memories and come flooding back within seconds of playing this scene. Just the sound of the phone ringing in the beginning gets me.
My favorite scene in the whole series. I sobbed uncontrollably. Snot everywhere.
The power of Lost. People like me who are damaged connect very deeply to this show. Many dont understand what we've been through. The finale is perfect for me. My father was a drug addict and destroyed my life. Redemption and forgiveness is a battle.
Amen
This was the TV show at its peak, and nobody has reached here till date.
The way I connected to all these characters is something I haven't experienced in any other show. Man, I need to watch this again.
I miss lost so much. We HAVE to go back. 🏝
There’s always The 100. Desmond’s in that too.
@@jonathancooper4914 the 100 is for kids trying to act
@@fatihakgun7730 it’s a guilty pleasure, I admit.
I was introducing some friends to Lost a few years ago and we finished this episode my friend said “it was alright.” Still pisses me off to this day.
Desmond and Penny are one of the epic love stories for the ages. When she says “Desmond, I have been looking for you for 3 years!!” is instant 😭😭😭😭
Obviously Henry Ian Cusick and Sonya Walger were awesome in this scene, but Naveen Andrews also absolutely knocked it out of the park.
The music and scene together ❤❤❤ absolute GENIUS Michael Giacchino!!! Great soundtrack!
This scene sums up the whole series for me. The whole Desmond and Penny love story is brilliant.
The “I’ve always loved you” breaks me everytime. Great scene.
"Penny, You Answered...Oh My God Penny Is That Really YOU" #FuckingTears
11 years already of the best episode on the history of the tv.
15 years later and watching this scene back still makes me emotional 😢. The acting, editing and that beautiful music made this scene perfect.
It is a perfect scene
ten years and I'm still crying
This scene brought me tears in my eyes ,, this gave me chills in my body and I felt tons of love in this scene.. what a great series it was .. I wish it there was a OTT at where everyone could have seen it easily…
This call, this whole scene was... beautiful and what made me LOVE Desmond. Lost itself was just so good man.
By far, the best scene in the series, amazing...
The best scene from the best show ever. Never to be equalled.
Starbuckfuck yeah
I think the best part is desmonds eyes when he relalize that penny cares about him
Just watched this episode and WOW. The writing is next-level. Every time Desmond is on screen, the episode is guaranteed to be mind-blowing.
This show is why the reason we watch global tv shows in turkey🙏
still makes me cry when they both say "I love you", damn what a fuckin good editing.
Such a good scene. Great acting, great writing.
you from kotaku ? xD
Powerful fucking episode.
hits hard even in 2024
Its even more impressive when you realize they probably aren't even talking to each other in real life.. their acting partners are literally a piece of plastic they are holding to their ears and they gave that performance.. so good
Never thought about that
PENNEH? I LOV U PENEEEEEH! I remember when Desmond was just a peasan condemned to press a button every 108 minutes... Best character so far.
My Absolute Favorite Episode.
I have basically forgotten all details about this show and don't even remember any names except Charlie and Desmond. I very randomly searched up for this video and I STILL teared up. This episode was the best.
One of the most emotional best acting scenes!
Watching in 2019, crying? YES!!!
One of the greatest TV episodes ever. Outrageously good
My favourite episode of anything, ever ❤️😍😩😭🔥.
This was by far, the best part of the entire series, brotha.
Aye
THE MOST MEMORABLE AND MOVING EPISODE I'VE EVER SEEN
This is the greatest scene of all time
still watch this every year around the holidays. timeless
I cannot describe how amazing this felt when I first saw this. It was just surreal. The tears would not stop. Such a beautiful scene and it really is one of the greatest scenes filmed for television!
This scene absolutely destroyed me.
The acting in this one is strong, and the music...my God. Everything is in sync. 0:44 and onward. Perfection.
The best episode in television history ❤
Everytime I want to be reminded what love is... I just watch this scene (or the whole episode) and cry my heart out. The acting is so brilliant and the music just lifts your heart and soul to a whole other level.
I love this
I never cried in any movie or TV episode.. until this scene. This just did it for me. Absolute perfection
The fact that it's titled The Constant, man the feels.
Easily my favorite TV moment
10 years!!! Like a 2018
Lost is timeless
This made me cry. Best scene ever! ^^
This was, is and will be the best scene ever in television history for me. Still gives me goosebumps while watching ❤ #GOAT
I cry everytime I watch this scene! Absolutely love this show!
Desmond and Penny are my favorite characters ever! Penny seems like the perfect girl :0
Ten years today!!
best episode of any tv series of all times
*"All we really need to survive is someone who truly loves us....and you have her..."* Us real ones know this show was the best...period.
This is why even got can't beat this magnificent show 😴😭💔
This is absolutely beautiful...the unbreakable connection....
The score by Michael G. ties this whole room (scene) together. All these years later, this scene makes me cry.
This 3 min scene is better than thousand romantic movies and books.
The best part of this series was this 3 minutes, really beautiful, true love
Tonight coming from work my phone died. It's over an hour walk. She was there at the door waving to me when I walked up because she was worried about me. I grew up with this show and I'm so happy to say, that I found my Penny
I lost mine. Hold her close.
@@pablobrightside1735 Never let go
I keep revisiting this scene every once in a few months or years. It feels amazing to experience again the intense feelings, emotions and love involved in this phonecall scene. I have watched many series but I have no other favourite scene that I would revisit with this enthusiasm and connection. Truly the best scene in television history.
15 years later and it still makes me tear up 😢 greatest show ever
Really The Greatest Show in Television History
Best ever episode of Lost I was on the edge of my seat!!!!!! Vi La Vi Desmond & Penny!!
Very few times in national network television two character actor's bring-it ....😥like this awesome moment in time LOST.
i am not crying, there's just something in both my eyes
not penny's boat
So... I cried too... I can't resist...
The Best Episode Everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
OMGEEEEE. The feels. Damn the feels.
Best scene in the series! Love love love!
I lost and found my one love. This always gets me right in the feels. I love you Sara x
come on now, lets not forget about sayid. i mean if it wasn’t for him, he’d have never been able to make that call. he saved desmonds life as much as penny did. the most loyal caring character in the show, who goes to extreme lengths to make sure his friends are safe n okay.
Absolutely. I loved Sayid and Desmond’s scenes on the freighter. They were like an action adventure team! And Sayid can certainly relate to lost love. (No pun untended.)
@@ATMyles110%, because as soon as they got to the freighter, they soon realised that the only thing they can do is rely on each other n truss no-one. and they do have a great bond with each other, n even when des’s consciousness was anchoring from scotland to the freighter, sayid was so laid back contained n controlled. n the one thing I LOVED more than anything was the fact that sayid wasn’t asking any needless n annoying questions like other people would have done. because i think sayid knew that des didn’t seem to know what was going on either, but des was smart enough to know how to restore himself, n he hung on thankfully, but I felt sorry for minkowski. But sayid n des are true soldiers🤙🏼💯
@@official_dee17 it broke my heart when Sayid turned (sort of) evil, but my faith was restored when Desmond convinced him not to kill him, and by asking what he’ll tell the woman he loves when she asks what he did to get her back. Desmond and Sayid were both romantic heroes.
Love Sayid stance at the beginning.
I love how it keeps switching back between the two of them as the phone is breaking up.
...Penny?
DESMOND?!
15 years today !! One of the best scenes from lost 😞 could never be another lost and I strongly believe we need to go back to the island and start all over 😊
this is my favorite episode... love desmond
Probably the Best moment in tv history, oh I remember that I was not crying.... no friends, I was wiping like a baby...
The moment she said "Desmond?!"
I broke
The perfect couple of all time
This was so good it deserves a movie on it's own.
In tears immediately
