Amazing how something that should be common knowledge has probably been the death sentence of millions of motors over the years. Brilliant, thank u
Right on
I learned this the hard way by trying to start one with the valve cover off. Then I realized that the valve cover on a 4-mix is part of the intake tract to lubricate the valve train. Because there is no oil sump, there are passages throughout the engine to lubricate it with premix like a 2 stroke.
"Show me." is something I have often said in my life.
The last time was when a friend said he got upset with his wife because she turned their overheating vehicle off before he could pull the radiator cap and add coolant while running.
I asked "Are you outta your mind?"
He said "Nothing will happen. I've done it many times."
I pulled my truck over, popped my hood and said "Show me."
He refused to show me saying...
"Well, your truck's not overheating."
Steve = The GOAT
It's amazing how many people can't explain what a 4-mix is versus say a 2-stroke.
Steve out what a guy 😎🤙
Good tip if I ever get a stihl😊
That’s real cool Steve. Thanks for sharing that info.
You're Welcome...
Ah. Love a PBR 👍
You helped out Pabst Brewing Co, if no one else😂
I laugh about that one too Steve . Snickered when you first said it I knew what it was going to do!
Right on
Wow Steve, amazing!
Good vid. Most folks don't realize the valve cover is part of the crankcase primary compression.
There’s another Steve that would probably like your choice of “Step 2”… Thanks there Mr. PBR!
Main thing I’ll take from this video is you have PBR in the Great White North ! I would go up and get Molson XXX back when you couldn’t get in states! Thanks again Steve-O
Thanks Steve, I just went to 4 stroke, I never knew that! That tip will save me hours in the future.
Glad to help
Although it's a neat concept, the Stihl 4mix machines have their issues. The better design was actually the Shindaiwa Hybrid 4 as the path through the engine (carb, crank case, up the valve galley and into the cylinder) was pretty straight forward while Stihl had a more direct path from the carb through the crank to the cylinder.
Awesome Steve 👍🏻👊
Good for you Steve! I love it when you tell it like it is. That dude was F.O.S.!!
Right on
Things that make you go "hummmmmm". Who'd-a-thunk? Good to know Steve. Thanks!!
Nice one Steve. I never try to be a know it all. But I know what I know. If I don't know I keep my mouth shut and watch and learn. Having said that I love nothing more than to call bullshit on a mouth peice know it all and make them prove it right or wrong. The last time I got the pleasure was actually a woman that kept telling me I was putting the bobbin in my wifes sewing machine wrong. I finally got tire of listening to her and said "ok smartass, show me how its done". So as smug as she could get she put it in slick as a whip, hit the peddle and destroyed the needle, bobbin and the carrier for it. Cost her $65 to fix it. She's never tried to tell me how to do anything again.😅😅😅
Thats why I have the Combi system from Husqvarna. Just a basic two stroke. No Valves, no cams, no problems…
The 4-mix engines from Stihl are great engines. I will take a Stihl over a Husqvarna all day long. 4-mix or 2-stroke, Stihl is better.
@@mikespain8655 all of the Brands have good ones and bad ones. I prefer Husqvarna over others when it comes to Gas powered combi systems. My old one lasted me 15 years in Commercial use. The new ones (122 LK and two 525 LK) are tough and reliable. So why should I buy others? My Saws are all Stihls and Dolmars, so are the leaf blowers too.
Every Company out there has good ones and Bad ones, I buy stuff that would fit my needs and not to others.
I’ve got 10 years on my Stihl Kombi with the 4mix and zero issues. Tons of torque, starts easy, doesn’t smoke, idles low and smooth, and just gets the job done. Not saying Husky won’t either, but Stihl has a great engine with the 4 mix. I definitely prefer it over a traditional 2 stroke. Yes, you may have to adjust the valves once or twice as it breaks in, but it takes less than 5 minutes.
I also have the BR800 with the 4 mix. Again LOVE the 4 mix. Wish they would make a BG86 style with a very of the engine. I’ve had far more issues with my 2 strokes than the 4 mixes.
Enjoy your Husky though. They’re great machines too!
@@briantii I was not saying that these are bad, sorry if you thought that. I also have 4-Mix round here (BR 600 Magnum) and love it. So please dont take it like that. Greetings from germany, the Land of the Stihls 😉😎
@@derrasenmaher9730 Ah gotcha! Love the Land of the Stihls! Greetings from America!
Good to know, Steve. Bought a 4-mix a couple of years ago. It's been a good machine. Used it today!
Thanks Steve
You're Welcome...
I have a Stihl 131 which is still fairly new and running fine but I'll file this tip away for future reference just in case , thanks Steve 🙂
Right on
Glad you made this video on this matter of don't remove the value cover on a 4 mix weed eater engine or any other one like that being that it is a 2 cycle engine trying to be a 4 cycle engine 😂
Awesome tip, Thanks!
No problem!
Cute tip and so easy to check. Thanks Steeve, you've done it again!!!! 😀
You're Welcome...
You always help Steve....keep up the good work....🙏
Thanks, will do!
i knew that with the valve cover off any of mine fleet wouldnt start. but watching the video makes sense now
Excellent tip Steve!!! Thank you sir, and say hello to the lovely April will ya!!!
Awesome Steve!
Thank You...
Good to know.
Great info Steve. Now can you show us how to vacuum a freshly cracked PBR. Happy Good Friday to everyone. Jesus , today, back in the day, shed hid precious blood and died to pay for everyone's sin debt. God bless us everyone
Awesome info Steve, definitely exposed that jag off😂😂😂. Hope you and April have a fantastic Easter 🐣 🐰. Cheers Steve O 🍻
Thanks, Bud
You're Welcome...
Happy Easter, Steve, and April!
Great video man, cheers 🍻
Thanks 👍
Excellent video!! In '95, I had the pleasure of touring the Pabst brewery! Some of the best folks there! Laid back... couldn't be better!
Very cool!
If you folow the Stihl manual for adjusting the valves - it will say to replace the cover gasket and the cover bolt gasket. Good show Steve👍
100% correct Claus! Thank You...
Wish you could work on my trimmer!
It makes sense though, running the air fuel mix through the crank case, like a two-stroke, since it’s lubricated like a two-stroke.
This would’ve never occurred to me either. Lol
Oh man this is going save a lot of machines I work on from my parts bin at work
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
I'm very thankful for what I've learned from that man
Four mix … oh a four stroke !
Thanks buddy 🍺
Not just any 4-stroke, though. You still need a 50:1 mix. Thus, 4-Mix.
Steve, long time viewer. Love your channel! I have a budding channel on firewood down in Seattle area, love to interview you on my podcast to get some insight on saw and splitter maintenance. Just an idea. Keep cuttin'!
Ahhhh yall safety peeps out there don't worry about the ventilation the Pabst Blue ribbon beer will take care of it . Helll most home owners that have one of those 4 mix don't even know you need to adjust the valve on those things , and they wonder why they are so hard to start and the kick back is a mother .
Nice video.
I have fs 87.In 2019 she vas in service. She runs still today great
Great video! Thank You So Very much for the information in this video. it realy helped me out with my stihl brush saw. :)
I’m going to drink to that!!
This PBR is for you !

Any time!
Steve you're always helpful,
Thank You...
GREAT VIDEO STEVE!!
THANK YOU
Very welcome
Steve, I'm sure this is valuable info, but now going on 10 years using a "Kombi" system for blowing, trimming, wood cutting and tilling. Every season, long hours, hard use, no failures.
Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for sharing
Your awesome, Mr. Steve, thanks a bunch.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Thanks for the tip!
No problem!
Very informative. Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us.
My pleasure!
Thanks Steve's 👍
You're Welcome...
Great job as always Steve. Thank you
Very welcome
Thanks Steve and cheers🍻 Greetings form the Netherlands!
My pleasure!
Steve, enjoy your videos. If you catch this post, how about a video on running avgas in small engines.
I've started using it to avoid ethanol in the gas. I've advised others to use it and then got to thinking about the catalytic converters on some of the newer engines. Leaded gas and cat converters are a bad mix I believe. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for all the tips and tricks you bring to us!
You're Welcome...
Hey thanks Steve I just learned something new good man
Glad to hear it!
Thanks Steve…..👍🍺
Any time!
Man it would be fun to sit and have a beer with you. 👍
Right on
Hey Steve and AprilI, this has nothing to do with this video, but I just did a top end rebuild on a Husqvarna 55 rancher, and I'm a little hesitant to start. Could you do a video on break-in or some advice on how to break the top end in so much info out there? I don't know what to trust. .Thank you
I have two of them in my shop right now with cracked valve cover gaskets. Having a hard time getting parts too.
This is true. I stripped the carb down and replaced the diaphragms etc and still ran like crap
Changed the gaskets on the carb either side. Still no joy
Changed the rocker gasket and reset the valves. Runs fine
Right on
Steve👍🏻
Hello Steve, I see that you can start the 4 mix pretty easy. I have also a 4 mix combi from stihl without a decompression button and I have to pull extremely to start him. Do you have a solution?
Greetings from the Netherlands
Nice vid. Thanks. You really should try another great Wisconsin beer - Spotted Cow from New Glarus.
Great suggestion!
Shit, I missed your content. And that PBR, ehh. Excellent stuff, love it
Didn’t know that but it does make sense . We have lots of 4 mix ones here. Adjusted the valves on them did help with some issues. Cold engine and not running 😂
Right on
I don't have any small portable gear with a quasi four stroke engine, I never seen the point but that is a great video...thank you!
I like my 4-mix brush cutter. starts easy, runs solid. you get used to it not howling.
Ho Steve neee your help. I have a stihl fs111rs trimmer has a new carb, and new ignition module but still will not start you, any ideas what it could be
Another great tip , Lou OUT
Right on
PBR 👍👍
My stihl weedeater today was running fine for a few minutes then it just stopped. I kinda looked at it like wth. I put it on the ground and pulled it one time and it started right up. So i went back to cutting then it did it again. It started back up and ran fine the rest of the day. What would make it do that? Dirt in the gas possibly. Im not sure. Never done it before.
😂😂😂THANK YOU ☮️💟☯️
Hope they were only very young mechanics that didn’t know that.
