When I wiggle the freewheel on my fs90r when at TDC the valves still move slightly. When I wiggle the freewheel when not at TDC the valves move much more. I have two fs90r and only one of them has the valves slightly move still when the freewheel is wiggled at TDC. What's up with that? New to the channel great stuff thanks.
Steve your vids kinda set the standard for high quality instruction. My small engines are running soooo much better as a result of your tutorials. And you’ve saved me a huge amount of money as well. Thank you.
As they say in South Boston, “wicked pissa”! My Fs-90 was hard starting, not running well and stalling. Replaced the air filter, the fuel filter and adjusted the valves with the Stihl kit, and it’s now like a new machine. Thanks!!!! Much more detailed solution than other videos.
Hi Steve. This is the best video that I have seen on UA-cam! You do an amazing job of describing the process of setting up the valves with the feeler gauge. I could not find any of those feeler gauges in this town! Thanks for showing us how to use a regular gauge by cutting a sliver off of the end of the gauge. No other individual explained that we could use the .004 inches which is .10mm gauge! I appreciate that you're so thorough! I thank you so very much!
I recently adjusted the valve clearance on my Honda 25cc, took it out on a job, it ran like a sick dog, watched this vid, it gave me a DUH moment, i went to rectify it, runs like a charm now, cheers Steve

THANK YOU! My Stihl FS 131 was under warranty and I've had it to multiple Stihl Service Shops. One shop replaced the whole engine and the other sad bad carb. Turns out all it needed was the valves adjusted. THANK YOU!
I found a fs90r at the scrap yard. I bought a $15 dollar China tune up kit for it, got it running but very poorly. Just adjusted the valves and hot dang she rips now! Thanks for the awesome videos brother!
Hey Steve, a Soda Pop/Beer can sidewall is usually .004" thick! It can be cut with a scissors. I frequently use these for precision shims on other projects.
I had the same idea after watching and before checking out the comments but I had no way of knowing without having proper tool to measure the width of can. Thank you cause now I do know a can will work and thank you for the tutorial Steve because my cousin Molly's KM 130 R isn't running the best. She's gonna wonder why it's running so well come next season 🤣 No way she won't be able to notice the difference.
YOU ARE MY HERO FOR TODAY. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. My FS100RX took 50 pulls to start then ran like crap. I'm a homeowner so so the commercial lawn care guys put as many hours on their machines in one month as I do in about 6 years... but I'm finally there and my valves were wacked. Your video saved my day.. and it worked perfectly.. Back to starting on the first pull and it runs smooth like brand new.!!
My Sthil fs131 has been hard to pull since I bought it brand new. Took it to the shop and even the half assed dealer mechanic said that it was supposed to be this way! They were just difficult…! Well, a trip to the store for some car feeler gauge set later, and voila I fixed my trimmer! Thanx for the video.
Just bough a Stihl FS 131. Before my purchase I did some research and saw that the valves needed to be adjusted time to time. Well after watching your video, I realized how easy it was and feel I made the right choice. Plus your accent reminds me of my mother's side of the family with their Finish accents they had. lol. Love the way you show your views how to do things without making them sound like it's rebuilding a rocket ship. lol
Picked one of these babies up from a neighborhood garbage pick. No fuel was going into primer bulb. I was prepping the carburetor for a rebuild before taking it off machine. Sprayed with carburetor cleaner to remove all the crud and shot it with compressed air and now it runs awesome. Guess the rebuild will have to wait another day. Going to hit the valve adjustment next as routine maintenance. Thanks Steve for your expertise.
Hey Steve! I got a good one for you. I drank a 16 oz can of beer and cut a 0.10 mm feeler gauge from the empty. I mic’d it and it was perfect. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks Steve. Super simple and to the point! I actually bought a couple of Stihl products with these engines and if I had known they had valves would have stuck with anything else 2 stroke.
After 8 gallons on my new 90, the spark arrestor screen was clogged, kept cleaning it, so just removed it with small driver and needle nose, runs better. Now I will adjust the valves. Thanks Steve!
One more happy camper here. My FS131 required Superman to pull the cord to start it. Open it up, tweak the valve clearances to 4 thou and it's back to being almost as easy to pull as when the spark plug was out. Thanks a bunch, Steve.
Great info. I'll be tuning my FS 90r valves for the first time this week based on the vid. Side note, I just picked up a FS 90r at a thrift store for $20 (deal of the century) and gave it to a friend. It needed $25 in parts (mostly cosmetic) and works great. Literally started on the third pull when I brought it home. I'm forwarding this video/your channel to him.
When trying to to start my Kombi 131 I thought I torn my rotator cuff. i look on you videos and ajusted the valves with the kit from Stihl ($3.32). Well it worked great. It was fun learning something new. Thanks and I going to contribute to your beer fund
My main problem was pulling out the cord, I took it back to the dealer he said that's normal. I bought the kit after watching a few videos. Now it pulls fine and runs better
My FS 110, is about to undergo this procedure.🙂 I am replacing that gasket though, otherwise I wasted $2.50🤣 Thank you again Steve, this channel has saved me alot of $ over the last 3 years😇
Hi Steve, Great video on Stihl valve adjustment. Job completed in a few minutes and the KM90r started right up. Watched a few more of your videos and all I can say is wow. Tom in CT
I have 5 stihl equipment and my fs90r trimmer is the only 4 mix. Yes, many things are different on it. I feel the same as you. All the other ones are VERY similar except for the 4 mix. Different animal. Now I realize this video is about the only real difference. You got this!
Well I adjusted my valves on my KM130R. It was getting hard to pull start it. after using the kombi as a hedge trimmer for so many years. Thanks again Steve .your videos come in handy. The task was pretty straight forward. And was very happy I completed the job.....AND IT ONLY TOOK ME 1 Carlton Dry Beer....Peice out Steve. From The Land Down Under.
Thanks a lot Steve on showing how to check and adjust these 4 mixes properly. Seen a couple other vids on here on doing this, but none have mentions the step about making sure you have it set on the right stroke before you start checking clearance and doing any adjusting. I think those other vids left that part out. Important step to not mention! So make sure guys when your adjusting you do this. If u wonder hey I just adjusted mine and still don’t seem quite. Could be it wasn’t on the right stroke before u started. Anyways thanks again Steve. I now know and feel comfortable enough to do this myself and not take it to dealer and drop it off just to be checked and if needed adjusted when I can do it myself in like 10min or so.
Like he said in the video, you can adjust these valves by hand, no feeler gauge necessary. The amount of slop on these valves after running a few hundred hours is very noticeable. Just adjusting the slop out is plenty good enough for routine maintenance.
Hi Steve. I have three of these machines. Two FS 90 R and one FS 110 R. The one 90 I took to a stihl dealer. They said the governor was out. It will start. But will not rev. The other two runs well. About an hour they will die down. Let off the gas and go again for about twenty minutes then it will do it again. The 110 has Black suit on the muffler.
Perhaps in a future video you could show us why these settings are so exact and important so we can not only know what to do but understand why this is critical to the operation of the unit.
Thanks Steve! Great information. Had just watched something similar before I found this. Now I have hope for humanity. Also, glad to learn about the 4-storke part. I have a 4-stroke Shindaiwa which uses a mix. Not everyone believes me.
Great info!!!! I'm commercial I have a Km 110 and a Km 111 I bought the 111 cause I was told my stuff wouldn't be ready for a week to 10 days (valve adjustment and new plug) and can't afford to be down that long cost $45.00 + tax for valve job. After watching your video I went to the same dealer to purchase the feeler which was out of stock they don't usually stock it special order so I went to ebay. After adjusting my valves I understand why he does not stock the feller gauge. BTW Ballentine Ale is the perfect beer for the job.
Thanks for the video. Adjusted the valves in my FS90R today. First time they have been adjusted and they were way off. Probably would not have tried it without your video.
Top man. Thanks for your help.. followed your instructions, Our Fs90 now runs perfectly, (our Stihl dealer shop would only do this for me if I booked a "full service" with them, ,,,, which I didn't want).
Just saw this. Now I can do the valves on my FS131 when the time comes. My Shindaiwa blower probably needs it since it's been 6 years. I'll check to see if you have a video for that. Thanks Steve, great job.
This video really helped me out. I was going to try and set the valves for the first time on my Stihl da 90 r and your video came up. Great job as always explaining in detail how to fix my machines. Thanks again
Hi Steve: Thanks ever so much for all the great info you are putting out there. Unlike some other people who who try to inform us about the mechanics of how things are suppose to operate, you are always very precise, clear, and to the point with your instructions. Your instructions, we can understand. I have a Stihl trimmer KM 110 R. Piston & cyl are bad. Can I get a KM 131 R piston kit instead of a KM 110R ???
Man thank u so much finally i found a video on how to properly adjust the valves ive done it before and never seem to come out right but i didn't know about the proper stroke since you explained it again thank u
The valves loosen faster than you'd think, but they're so tiny it's kind of expected. Machine runs well for a long time without adjustment, because there is an automatic compression release built into the cam gear. Once it gets difficult to start because compression release stops working it's past time to adjust the valves.
Thanks, like a lot, because mine was running like crap before this video and now it runs great! And it's all thanks you, Steve! Your a great person, and your channel/website is awesome!!!
greetings from the Napa Valley. No question you are the man. I hope I can achieve your level of skill> working on that. My little business is growing. Not alot of return repairs now.
I use a 4 stroke Ryobi engine for a GoPed, and during a ride it cut out. Every time I start it and gave gas it cut off. I did what you said at the end, fully tightened and loosend both a bit, she runs again
Great video though... Glad to see someone else cares about good content and recognizes that good content equals a great resource for those who seek to find it. Keep up the good work... I'm actually working on some videos myself and still learning how to direct myself...
Your vids are always supremely excellent. All info, no fluff. Btw it’s worth using a caliper or mic to double check the actual thickness of your feeler gauge. The trick of 1/8th turn is one I’ll use. My ht131 is running crappy so I reset the valve clearance this am. Think I set to the wrong stroke since it down on power and backfiring under load. Thanks
thanks Steve, I've had my fs90r for about a year now, bought it second hand. Never seemed quite right. Just had a look today and the clearances were quite large, fixed them up and made a big difference. Had to completely re-tune the carb, so off to find that video of yours now.
PERFECT. Another good video from you, Steve. Thank you. I plan on doing this with my FS-45 trimmer. Looks like it could be a hassle to get the plastic cover off to actually access the valve cover though. I'll see.
My fs130 was running great, easy to start, huge torque but i decided to have a look at the valve clearances anyway (number one rule, dont fix it if it aint broken). i was surprised to find the rockers very sloppy. adjusted as per this video TDC, no movement in rockers when moving flywheel. feeler slight resistance at .10mm, first thing i noticed was the machine was hard to start, then after some run time i realized that it had no bottom end torque at all. let cool down, turned each rocker bolt anti-clockwise between 1/8 and 1/4 ...about 3/16 turn i suppose, then tested machine and it was back to normal again.
Steve. You Da man. Always found my KM130 R hard to crank even from new. so I put one of those full grip pull handles on it. Then just recently changed the clutch because the head would turn when pulling the starter making it also hard to pull. Broke my that pull handle this morning trying to crank my stubborn KM130 R. After I changed handle I Found this video adjusted the valves and Walla, fixed. Thanks you. One thing though about what you said about TDC and rotating again if it’s not. Does that mean that to double check my clearance I would have to rotate 360 x 2 once I found true TDC. Thanks again
Thank you so much i just pivked up an mtd 4 stroke and it runs like crap. I know how to use feeler guages and set valves but did not know about the arrow and rocker trick.
I have a two cylinder tractor. Would the same apply by wiggling the drive shaft to see if the valves are moving in order to find the compreshion stroke, at top dead center for each seperate cylinder.
I’m gonna give this procedure a go tonight. Acceleration and deceleration are both slow. Does the engine need to be warmed up beforehand? I know on some car engines a valve adjustment requires getting to operating temp.
thanks for the video. very helpful. quick and easy. must say that your videos are easy to follow. i find that people from Canada are nice. been thinking of emigrating, things are getting nasty down here.
Wow! Its a shame I didn't find this video sooner. My Stihl H-131 polesaw got harder & harder to pull the cord - then just wouldn't start anymore - thought it had stuck clutch or something wrong with puller cord apparatus. Took to dealer, he said the valves were out of adjustment - works like a champ now!
Hey there master Steve! I have an fs 130 and follow your instruction step by step to no avail. I cant get the valves to stop moving up and down like you showed before adjusting them. Also i noticed you re turning the flywheel clockwise but mine turns anti clockwise when i pull the string. Any tips or problem indications would be highly appreciated. Thank you sir! ( forgot to mention it will not even cough or show a sign of starting, i have spark, fuel, clean carb, new air and fuel filters, and the "woodruf" key on the shaft is not sheared at all)
Pulled my fs 90 apart and gave it a good cleaning and carb cleaning. Ran like a champ for about 1 min then seems to flood during normal use. This has been an issue for months. Will this help or is it other issue/adjustment? Thanks! Great video
just finished watching you vid. i adj the valves, the saw will now run but will die at idle. it has never did that before. maybe i adj alittle to tight?
Hi Steve, thanks a lot for this useful information. Today I got a Stihl KM131R coming in. According to the customer, the engine suddenly stopped. They tried to start the engine but it wouldn't start anymore. I did some checks before taking it apart. There was not enough compression, altough the sparkplug was tight and in pretty good condition. I decided to remove the valve cover and I found the small side of the rocker arm of the intake valve sitting on top of the valve stem. So the intake valve was open all the time what causes the lack of compression. But, I notice also a small mark on the inside of the valve cover coming from the rocker arm of the exhaust valve (push rod side). I have two questions for you...what can be the cause of rocker arm "jumpin" on top of the valve stem? Why the rocker arm of the exhaust valve has been touching the valve cover?

can you put a nut on top of the adjustment nuts? or maybe even blue loctite them?
It's not that the nut loosens or backs off, it's engine wear your compensating for.
Top man Steve my km90 is humming beautifully now without you I would of spent a lot to get repaired keep up the good work 😊
Thank You...
Thanks, like a lot, because mine was running like crap before this video and now it runs great! And it's all thanks you, Steve! Your a great person, and your channel/website is awesome!!!
Great to hear!
Just picked an FS76 from my neighbors curb and it's seen better days but hope to rebuild and learn more...
Good luck!
just did this to a combi tool that the main dealer told me wasnt worth fixing...it now runs like a brand new engine !!!
Awesome!
greetings from the Napa Valley. No question you are the man. I hope I can achieve your level of skill> working on that. My little business is growing. Not alot of return repairs now.
I appreciate that!
I use a 4 stroke Ryobi engine for a GoPed, and during a ride it cut out. Every time I start it and gave gas it cut off. I did what you said at the end, fully tightened and loosend both a bit, she runs again
Right on ...
Thanks
You're Welcome...
Just wanted to say thanks …that’s exactly what I needed to see
You're Welcome...
Best video tutorial on this yet! Love from the East Kootenays.
Wow, thanks!
did my first tune up of my FS100 and valves were good and started like a charm.....your sense of humor rocks!
Best instructions for small engines on you tube
Thank You...
Steve love the tdc valve wobble tip and the sneaky feeler gauge legendary stuff
Thank You...
Great Job! How often should I check the valve lash?
thanks Steve, I've had my fs90r for about a year now, bought it second hand. Never seemed quite right. Just had a look today and the clearances were quite large, fixed them up and made a big difference. Had to completely re-tune the carb, so off to find that video of yours now.
Great to hear!
PERFECT. Another good video from you, Steve. Thank you. I plan on doing this with my FS-45 trimmer. Looks like it could be a hassle to get the plastic cover off to actually access the valve cover though. I'll see.
You’re a great teacher Steve love your style
Thank You...
thanks Steve....Sleemans late 80"s many a trip to the Guelph outlet on a sunday when they were the only ones open for hundreds of miles around
Thanks for all the videos. They help so much. My fs91rwas running like crap. I think adjusting the valves fixed it. Find out tomorrow.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Ed
So glad I watched this. I've got one of these 4mix weedeaters and mines been acting up. Doing this asap. Thanks
Good luck!
Helpful & well done video. Just a note of curiosity...every piece of Stihl equipment I’ve owned or worked on uses a T27...not T25 Torx. 🤷🏻♂️
Well done vid. No bullshit, to the point and full of knowledge. Thank you.
You're welcome... and thank you
Less than two dollars I picked up a feller gage and gasket for my km 90r at the sthil dealership.
Thank you so much i just pivked up an mtd 4 stroke and it runs like crap. I know how to use feeler guages and set valves but did not know about the arrow and rocker trick.
You're Welcome...
I have a two cylinder tractor. Would the same apply by wiggling the drive shaft to see if the valves are moving in order to find the compreshion stroke, at top dead center for each seperate cylinder.
Instructions were perfect. Thanks.
You're welcome!
I’m gonna give this procedure a go tonight. Acceleration and deceleration are both slow.
Does the engine need to be warmed up beforehand? I know on some car engines a valve adjustment requires getting to operating temp.
Love the info, great channel.
Stihl uses T27 fasteners. T25 will work but not correct.
thanks for the video. very helpful. quick and easy. must say that your videos are easy to follow. i find that people from Canada are nice. been thinking of emigrating, things are getting nasty down here.
Right on Rocky...
and the beer tastes better too
Right on
Great presentation ! I assume its the same for a model FS91R?
Hey there master Steve! I have an fs 130 and follow your instruction step by step to no avail. I cant get the valves to stop moving up and down like you showed before adjusting them. Also i noticed you re turning the flywheel clockwise but mine turns anti clockwise when i pull the string. Any tips or problem indications would be highly appreciated. Thank you sir! ( forgot to mention it will not even cough or show a sign of starting, i have spark, fuel, clean carb, new air and fuel filters, and the "woodruf" key on the shaft is not sheared at all)
Man you are awesome for putting this info online, thanks for the help.
Happy to help!
Pulled my fs 90 apart and gave it a good cleaning and carb cleaning. Ran like a champ for about 1 min then seems to flood during normal use. This has been an issue for months. Will this help or is it other issue/adjustment? Thanks! Great video
I can’t thank you enough for this video mines less then to years old valves were tight did what u said fired right up! Thanks
You're welcome...
just finished watching you vid. i adj the valves, the saw will now run but will die at idle. it has never did that before. maybe i adj alittle to tight?
Do I do this when its warmed up or cold? On my Stihl BR600, it has to be warm or it runs like crap. Thank you for the video
Steve - can you show how to adjust the valves on a craftsman 20 HP lawn tractor? Love your videos!!!
