When I was going to university / Business School there was a subject / credit course you could take called "What is money". I signed up immediately, of course. The course was not even created, due to lack of students joining the course. This was in business School, mind you. No one were actually interested in the most basic question that all business revolves around, that is accumulation of wealth/money.
This has fact has always blown my mind.
How come all business students are so keen on "cracking the nut" to find the next big business idea whilst do few actually are interested in WHAT this absurd concept "Money" really is?
It's the equivalent of an engineer wanting to invent a new type of car, but not really understanding why we need cars in this world in the first place - or even - what a car is! It's a paradox.

I agree 100% because money affects our lives so much you would think it would be one of the most important subjects to teach people, but alas we are never taught about money and everything around the subject.
It’s not wonder most of us are slaves to money and don’t really understand it and end up struggling most of our lives.

isn't it incredible to think that Alan Watts died in 1973 and that The Veil of Thoughts is a lecture from 1965? There was no omnipresent internet as there is now, no mobile phones, no teleworking, and yet the images fit perfectly with what he is sayings, especially when he says that you could work from home as not to pollute. At that time we were not even that conscious of what we were doing to the environment. A real visionary!

Alan was active from the 1950s--70s and died in 1973. But you're absolutely right, his insights and recontextualizations of Eastern philosophy and spirituality are applicable to Western civilization now more than ever. If you're sincere about learning more about his point of view and what it means for us, I'd highly recommend starting with 'The Wisdom of Insecurity." Just got a hard copy for Christmas and it's crazy how meaningful his message has been for me personally and the larger modern world. Even after so many decades have passed, we're still living in an age of anxiety where no one really knows what's going on and few things ever really change.

According to another viewer of this video, (who had to answer my question with unnecessary sarcasm), Watts was against socialism. If that's true, it's somewhat surprising in that Marx and the like wrote extensively on a moneyless, stateless society. Those philosophers and economists also talked about the same theme--how money is solely based on our collective agreement of its "worth."

i love how years, i mean almost 60 years ago, he understood how socialism was a terrible idea, and recognized the terrible misguided intentions of capitalism. In order for us to progress, reward needs to be given to those who create progress. The lazy and unwilling don't need to be rewarded, because to do so, would rob those who put forth the effort to progress and innovate. Progress NEEDS reward, that is the intent of un-interrupted capitalism. So many forget that. Money is actually not real, but some reward needs to be given to those who use their intelligence to make life better for others. Hard work is good, but smart and hard work is what solves diseases, builds businesses that benefit the community, is what creates devices that help the less fortunate, and what builds systems that make everyones lives just simply easier. money has no real value, but the reward is what gives it value.

I'm not watching this video so apologies if this may sound irrelevant, but money is an extension of power, or access, which is a form of power. My life in this western world I live is guaranteed by my paycheck. Sure there are ways to by-pass the usual 9-5 job, but what if its more than that!, What if, what those of us who work 9-5 gain a greater spiritual understanding about ourselves and others. Just like Jesus Christ teaches that in heaven, being a servant is of the highest reward. Hence Jesus Christ was the ultimate server, because he gave his life for all of us. Just my take, thats all my understanding on this matter, I admit, I don't know much, but what I do know I am certain...I think.

Hi. From an economic perspective Alan's opinion is far too simplistic and mystical. Money is not only a "store of wealth", it's also a "means of exchange", "a unit of account", and a "universal means of costing production" so we can gauge if we're getting a good return for our efforts. Alan compares machinery which is made with universal precision measurements, but he doesn't follow on from his own analogy.
"Money" is the economic universal precision measure by which all goods and services can be compared for value. "Best By" dates on supermarket produce show how their monetary value drops as the quality degrades over TIME. To say that money and time don't exist sounds profound, but is quite ignorant. Were Alan to spend a week of his "eternal present" working as a greengrocer among the gradually decomposing cabbages, he'd get a realistic understanding of both time and money. This took me 10 minutes to write, but I feel I've added my tuppence worth of V.A.T.. Cheers, P.R.

Yeah, we don't really need money, do we? We can just go in a shop and nick what we need. Just take it. Grab a piece of fresh tuna, put it under an armpit and walk out of the store, all nonchalant, and smelling of fish.
