I just want to say how privileged we are that Alan Watts is recent enough to actually here the mans voice. I love his books, but there is that charm and humour in his voice that makes me so happy.
I have stage 4 cancer at 52 yrs old. And it was really motivational to hear something like this. Considering I just paid for my own cremation. Odd, ashes to ashes dust to dust. 😊

True. You can't have good without evil, life without death, light without dark. There's no other way to measure
Not good and evil, no right or wrong, just yin and Yang, there’s a difference..IMO
You can have good without evil. You can have life without death. You can have light without dark. I can have a lamp on on in my home during the day, can't I? The light is the light, whether in darkness or alone. If I was immortal, death wouldn't exist. Good is good simply because it is, not because it has something to compare to.
@@amyrenee1361 your light can be on during the day...but the sun is not the same as the lamp. And if the sun and your lamp were the only two sources of light...there would be darkness indeed! The darkness would exist wherever the sun could not shine and wherever your lamp could not reach.
More like it's only called light because it's the opposite of dark.. if there were no dark that existed, your light would just be called.. normal..

Everything is not connected. What my neighbor is doing right now behind closed doors has absolutely nothing to do with me. I am not influencing nor controlling him, am I? No matter what I choose to do tonight in my home, I will have nothing to do with what he chooses to do in his.

Something can exist without an opposite - it just wouldn't be compared, it would just be. Bees and flowers are not one and the same, they are two distinct organisms that rely on one another for living.
Exactly. Of course, when you see the World only through the eyes of yin & yang it all seems to just be comparative/contrasting. But, there is very much more to existence and perception than that. If his vision seems simplistic, it is because you intuit correctly that it is so.

4:51 - Each of our senses makes its own space, but no sense can function in isolation. Visual space is the space of detachment, auditory space is the space of involvement. Touch serves as the interface for the interplay of all senses, which we call our common sense. When we lose "touch" with the audial-tactile, we drop out in order to get in touch; whether it be chemical, psychic, or social.
So things are both simple and complex, kinetic and synthetic, kinaesthetic and synaesthetic. Speculators following Alan Watts could easily fall unawares into the auditory bias of field theory as the Greeks leapt into the flatland of abstract visuality and one-way linearity. But if you do decide to apply a single-world function to the entire gig, like the concept of yinyang, that's a totally fine game by me.

it is not difficult to understand conceptually, the difference is that although people can understand this cognitively, they are not ready to live their lives under this premise
Everything is connected, is what he is trying to say. Yea its not difficult to understand, when he gives like a thousand examples.
You're right...knowing something cognitively and actually embodying it are two different things. One sided thinking is not an easy thing to unlearn
The distance from the head to the heart is short but the journey can be long...and sometimes short.
I think about it and smile almost every time I have a bad day. One HAS TO HAVE some bad days, as that's what makes the good days good.
So without life there is no death and without death there is no life....they are married...inseparable....a non dualistic dance into eternity. ...it is as shallow as it is deep....
Without death there is no birth. Life is eternal.

Maybe not becoming self aware, but aware to the point people think they are above other people. But being self aware is a gift, but also a curse.

Indeed, every living thing has a different perception of reality. The real you is simply everything you can sense and everything that you cannot sense. The real you is made from the same stuff from which the universe is made. The real you is not separate from anything. The real you is part and parcel of every thing in the known and unknown universe.

One of my mentors always said you gotta take the good with the bad. Imagine you lived a life weighed more towards the perception of "good" but in balance of you're objectively "good" life there is another being that experiences a perceptively "bad" life. However the human mind without the general experience of the other way of life that both individuals could not knowing the latter, precieve their life and experience any which way they so choose. The being living the good life might only dwell on the bad, thus feeling they lived a bad life. The being living the bad life might only cherish the good, thus living a good life. It's all a matter of perspective. You might be caught up trying to get somewhere in life, only seeing adversity, obstruction and discourse. Wherever you think you need to go isn't really where you want to go. You just need to have a good time getting somewhere or finding a new perspectiveof where you are at.

Atom is mostly empty and we don't know where core is or electrons are. This is a very proof of we're living in a simulation. Otherwise there would be parallel universes, ever expanding universe etc. We're truly in a truman show.
Particle theory aside, your ego lives in the simulation it creates. Our egos are in the Truman Show. Third Dimension..polarity/unity
I haven't see the video yet. But i want to say something first. Something everyone can and eventually will. There are atoms everywhere around us. Through meditation (Kundalini Yoga) your body becomes a catalyst between earth and sky (negative and positive energy) and your solar plexus is a battery you can charge and recharge through the sun. Your eyes are open cells and can absorb sunlight. With the right process you can envelop certain (extraordinairy) talents. Your body becomes heigthen for the layers (planes, dimensions) on earth if it is corectly done you can flow your dna/ genetic marker open..... next time more. Im in a hurry. Sorry if my English isn't superb. I am born and raise in the Netherlands. But I am a Hindu. Mr.R! Out

What if the people on the other side of the tracks can't even understand the concept of this argument (or question for layman)?
I like Watts, and generally every Western philosopher since Greece, but you HAVE to ask the question, "What people were they addressing (originally), and what people are capable of listening (understanding)?"
For example, what cultures outside of "Western" culture understands philosophic questions? It seems only some Asian (Chinese & Japanese) and some Indian folks wrestle with these questions & concepts.
You can read it and actually consider my proposal, or read it and call me names.
I get the impression that we all must have known this at some point before physical existence was, we somehow have forgotten it, how! who knows? But if what Alan is saying is true, then we are not advancing too well towards discovering the answers, it seems to me that we should be more communicative with one another as a species or entity, rather than leaving the matter to just a privileged few to govern us without insight to understanding, let alone even care about the esotericism of this existence, hence materialism has distracted the world from the true objective of what we should be looking for! So I conclude this... you are looking for me, I am looking for you, we are looking for them, they are looking for us, but until we mean to look, we never will.
