Just one question I'm new to thread painting would like to know can you just thread paint the top of your applique quilt not the batting or the backing? And use a stabilizer, I'm going to do free motion quilting on the rest of my quilt.

as long as you have some sort of stabilizer other than fabric yes that will work.
