    The best part of the VO is how Harrison Ford sounds like he'd rather lick the inside of a toilet than continue reading the script for it.

      CrystalJupiter Harrison hated the voice over and so did Ridley Scott. Ford even said in an interview he did it to the best of his ability but knew it was terrible. However the studio wanted the damn thing and there was no talking them out of it.

      Harrison had to lie that he "tried his best" ..
      .. or else he may get sued as an actor who signed a contract for intentionally bad acting ...
      Harrison is laughing inside he intentional bad acting did help to get rid of the voice over that he's been against since the beginning of shooting ...

      uhh ... wrong, the clips are not from Final Cut ... the old chimney shot is there.
      By the way, I love Director's Cut's colors a lot more, its richer rather than more bluish ... and the old chimney shot suits the music and wet tonal reflections of the rooftop a lot more ... the new shot looks like a mish-mash montage of many obviously photoshopped images ..

      fuck all the stupid cuts. They're just made for people to buy the DVDs. The original movie is the only one, the more coherent and meaningful, none of the stupid unicorn dreams and all of that bullshit that left people wondering if Deckard is a replicant... of course he isn't and he can't be. If Deckard would be a replicant all the story would crumble like a card castle

    The cool thing about this modern era though, is that we the ability to enjoy multiple versions. The VO version certainly helped me understand the context as a kid. As I grew older, I appreciated the Directors Cut much more. That said, it's absurd to continue to beat this dead horse on the VO matter.

    NO ONE WANTED the voice over in the original release of Blade Runner, EXCEPT the fucking studio. Scott hated it, Ford hated it, pretty much everybody hated it except for some twerp at the studio. The Final Cut is the most definitive cut of the film.

    • @TotinosPizzaRollz
      @TotinosPizzaRollz 6 років тому +3

      The studio insisted on the voice over because test audiences didn't understand what was going on. To this day, people complain that the movie is slow, boring and confusing when they watch the Director's Cut without the narration. The voice over fills in crucial details about the story that the director didn't bother to explain on the screen. If you've never seen the original voice over version then you only know half the story.

    • @jainee4507

      Studio interference is part of the filmmaking process though. The original release with the VO is what people saw on opening night and that has to give it some authoritative status over the other versions.

    Don't know which version of Blade Runner I like the most. On the one hand, the original cut had the voiceover (which I didn't mind, except here) but it also had three additional scenes too violent for the American movie-going public. On the other hand, the Director's/Final Cut had no voiceover and retained the original ending but also had these STUPID fucking allusions to Deckard being a Replicant put in there by Ridley Scott like Deckard's eyes glowing a faint red in dim light and the infamous "Unicorn Scene".
    I'm going with Word of God on this one. Philip K. Dick said Deckard was human, so he's human. If Deckard was a Replicant, then Blade Runner would be a far shallower, vapid science fiction film. The story of a man who loses his humanity hunting artificial humans who want more life falls flat if said man is really an artificial human too and just didn't know it.

      +Kevin Striker 100%. "If Deckard was a Replicant, then Blade Runner would be a far shallower, vapid science fiction film. The story of a man who loses his humanity hunting artificial humans who want more life falls flat if said man is really an artificial human too and just didn't know it." Totally agree here. Part of the inherent tension that gives the film such dramatic arc is the irony that Deckard, a human, *loses* his humanity by opposing these machines that are actually trying to *gain* that very same humanity.

    • @SCROGY
      @SCROGY 7 років тому +2

      Agreed. Part of the greatness of BR is the idea that a MAN learns the value of life from an artificial human. Dekkard is human in my mind.

    • @fredlast4547
      @fredlast4547 6 років тому

      If you read DO Androids Dream of Electric Sheep clearly Deckard is human. A sub theme of the story is the desire to own a real animal but nobody can afford one so people buy robot animals. This emphasises the desperate position of humanity in a dystopic future. Personally I also preferred the voice over because it was supposed to be a Philip Marlow story set in the future and that was often a feature of film noir private eye stories.

      He's not saying the concept of voiceover narration is bad; he's saying that this is a horrible execution of it.
      To use Shawshank as an example, this is the equivalent of having a flatly-delivered voiceover by Andy Dufresne in the scene where he comes out of the pipe and stands in the rain.
      It's about knowing where to use a voiceover and where not to.

Not a single movie can match the world building ability of Ridley Scott, definitely not the Denis Villeneuve sequel which looks pale and emotionally hollow compared to the gloriously invigorating scenes throughout the first Blade Runner...

    I saw Bladerunner in the theater all those years ago. Back then, there was no final cut to compare which was better.
    I love both versions. The final cut is great but I hate the unicorn dream sequence as much as Darabont hates the VO. I still have a soft spot for the VO and even Ford’s delivery. His unenthusiastic delivery reinforces the sense that Deckard was a tired, depressed, hard boiled detective with not much to live for.

    I disagree that the voice over from Harrison was clunky. When the film was released, it would have been harder to follow without some of the voice over. It explained "cityspeak", "skinjob", "cop/little people", and other things that you need to know to understand what was going on. Even the end "but then again who does" defines the film. I prefer it without it, but for the first time watching it I think it fits.

    • @CrazyHorseInvincible
      @CrazyHorseInvincible 8 років тому +3

      +douglas787 You're one of those idiots who can't use context to figure things out for himself. They refer to a replicant as a "skinjob" nearly at the start of the movie; it requires no further explanation. The reason they don't explain "cityspeak" is because it's completely inessential; they just wanted to establish that English wasn't the norm anymore because the culture had changed. The "cop/little people" reference...it was just meant to hint at authoritarianism, it didn't need any fucking explanation.
      I remember the first time Pulp Fiction came out, people asked me if I "got it" the first time I watched it. I was utterly confused. What the fuck is there to "get"? That the movie isn't chronological?
      That was the first time I got a hint of how profoundly stupid the average person is.

      Actually, Ridley Scott was the one who came up with the idea for a voiceover. He even says in this documentary, "It was not their decision -- it was *my* decision." Scott believed the voiceover would help the movie at the box office. He only removed it for the director's cut after he was confident that the movie would be fine without it.

    Darabont is off the mark when it comes to roy's motivations for saving deckard's life. It's not because he's learned to appreciate life. It's because he wanted deckard to understand what the life of a replicant is like. To live in fear as a slave. He wouldn't be able to understand that if he fell to his death. And i'm pretty sure the dove is symbolism for roy's soul leaving his body (once he dies the dove flies off). I'm surprised darabont's interpretation sounded like a 1st year film student's assessment. Pretty lame.
