I'm so glad that Frank Darabont decided to end the movie the way he did. The reunion between Red and Andy was perfect. I've been watching this movie for twenty years and that scene still makes me tear up every single time I watch it.
Initial reaction of the end scene was that it was gay, cos cum on guys, I know u wondered what Andy and Red did after their macho embrace right? However after thinking about it, I think it's a great scene because the film would be unfinished without it, great movie 👍
The one actor I'm surprised I haven't seen more of is the guy who played Byron Hadley. His jawline is intimidating and his voice is so powerful. These Superhero movies should cast that guy as a villain. I think he has the potential to be the best General Zod or Lex Luthor ever.
So umm.... Deserves Best Picture - The Shawshank Redemption Best Director - Frank Darabont Best Actor- Tim Robbins Best Supporting Actor- Morgan Freeman Best Cinematography- Roger Deakins Best Original Mucic Score- Thomas Newman Best Adapted Screenplay- Frank Darabont Best Film Editing- Best Sound Mixing- Did I forget anything? Luckily actor Kevin Costner didn't get the acting part Tim Robbins got as Andy Dufresne because Kevin decided to do movie Waterworld & I just feel it would been totally different movie Tim Robbins was perfect Andy for this movie still can't believe they chose Kevin Costner for the role first
The ONE movie that if I tune across it while surfing around for something, no matter where I come in, I'll watch it to the glorious end. No huge fan of opera, but Freeman's narration of that scene and 500 hardened convicts standing in rapture to that beautiful aria, puts as big a lump in my throat as the ending.
Thank God they had red and Andy reunite at end , that broad smile I had with tears rolling down my cheek , the sense of fulfilment , the relief all because of hug between two friends ❤️.
Probably my favorite movie. Those last few scenes starting at the oak tree. Freeman’s final narration… I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams…. I hope. I don’t cry every time I watch it but I certainly get emotional.
I'm thinking about the movie which I've watched a month before. Whenever I think about that movie I cry, I don't know why I cry but I understood that it's the best movie which I've watched in my life time and nothing can't be replaced to this movie😭❤️. Remember hope is a good thing.
At 21 I read Stephen King’s story and thought it would make a great film. Frank Darabont, about my age, did the same. Except he went out and made it. Just finished listening to the story last night for the first time since 1982, although I’ve seen the movie many times. The script, a more heightened, condensed version of the story, actually uses many actual snippets of narration and dialogue, but in different places than the original - to great effect. If you’re familiar with the movie, reading or listening to the original story will surprise you. Darabont put in a lot of though and work to make it the classic it now is. King has expressed his appreciation.
I dont care what naysayers say, I have said this in early 95 when I saw this film for the first time and countless times since having almost memorised the entire dialogue in the film: THIS IS THE BEST FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN and many would agree as it has been the numero uno on imdb greatest films list since 2008 till present!
One of the best details of the movie I missed the first time I watched it is that the harmonica Andy gave Red is alluded to in the film score when Red is digging up the bus tickets.
I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. The truth is I don't want to know , some things are best left unsaid.I like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words...and makes your heart ache because of it.I tell you the voices were higher and farther than anybody in grey place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away...and for the briefest moment every last man in the Shawshank felt free...
Darabont has earned my respect -with his films and his other work -in television as well. This guy also produced the first two seasons of "the Walking Dead"and has proven -to many that he has a special gift -of storytelling and filmmaking.🔚🔚
Never could understand why it didn't do well at the box office. It deserved better. I guess it was too late when people found out how good it is.But I imagine it sells really well on streaming/dvd/blueray.
Underrated? SERIOUSLY!? LOL! Come on that word does not apply here. This is one of the most celebrated films of all time and even voted the number 1 greatest film ever by IMDB
As I look back, hard to believe I did time there all those years ago (OSR, Mansfield, Ohio where this was filmed-I believe it's a museum or somethin now). Was 17 when I went in for a 10 year bit and went threw hell myself. Between having to fight all the time from guys trying to assault me, several counts of escape, being beaten by guards, spending a lot of time in the hole, etc., I can relate to much of this. And it's as horrible looking in real life as it is in the movie, I can tell you. :-) I have watched this movie at least 20 times (I actually bought it), and I thank Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and Stephen King for bringing some of what I went thru in 'real-life' to the screen.
I'm from that area (my uncle was an extra in the movie who had a line that got cut) and yes, it's hot and cold and all the rest. Very much Midwestern weather.
I had to watch this movie for my last college class " Social Work as a Profession ". I remember it really angered me and I expressed it in my paper. My teacher seemed a little bit afraid by my reaction. How can a liberal not be pissed off by injustice? Still what a fantastic timeless work of art!
Read the short story and see the film. Normally both don't match because they are so different in interpretation but this film still works despite the differences being quite big. Red is a white Irishman, it all occurs under different Governors (Bob Gunton is the only one not to age) and Tommy simply gets transferred and not murdered.
Stephen King's always been a little bit hit or miss for me. Having said that, I've been reading everything he's ever written since I was old enough to read (since about 1982!) so I guess I must be a "fan." But Different Seasons? That was/is comfortably one of the best examples of original literature I have ever read by anyone, bar none. It is accomplished work by a ridiculously imaginative and ultra-talented writer. I wish he'd written more like that over his career in some ways, but I imagine hitting that level of quality consistently must really take it out of you. Put it this way, very few writers can achieve it even once no matter how hard they try. He did it four times in one collection (!) just to prove, more I suspect to himself than anyone else, that he was a "real" writer and not stuck in the horror genre. And then we were also blessed with this astonishing movie. Double win!
Most underrated creator of all time: The guy who made Shawshank Redemption an amazing movie. Did the same for Green Mile. And he created the Walking Dead show for years. Give the man some f'n credit! He's one of the best directors ever.
Disappointed that Darabont never made a film of The Long Walk, also by Stephen King. Darabont held the rights for over 10 years they have now lapsed. Now New Line Cinema have the rights and are going to get a nobody to direct
@@rricci im not fan of pulp fiction but many people out there love it, forrest gump showed us how a young simple man can achieve such things in life. forrest gump was still good, so was shawshank

My father's and my own favorite movie. He had the script memorized. I can't watch it now. He passed away almost 10 years . I realize now that he was comforted by this film's redeeming message. Innocent men suffer just as those who aren't, but faith is a gift offered to all who persevere in the truth knowledge of the Heavenly Father and His only begotten Son.
Look at body posture. Those three are laid back and upright, which shows confidence and relaxation, while the interviewer is hunched and looking down, because he’s nervous and out of his league.
Spielberg got me to help them write the script. I wanted him to play Red. Filming Star Wars was my idea. I'd also inspired the heck out of Stevie Spielberg and he'd done really, really well, so I had a lot of pull. Thus my word was law, just a few additions.
Is that Mel Brooks' son, the author of World War Z? There's a rumour about WWZ sequel, i wish Mr. Darabont could direct it plus i love his take on The Mist and The Green Mile.
I'm so glad that Frank Darabont decided to end the movie the way he did. The reunion between Red and Andy was perfect. I've been watching this movie for twenty years and that scene still makes me tear up every single time I watch it.
Castle Rock were the ones who suggested it end that way.
I like the ending were Red snitches for the reward money and brings the Feds to the island.
Frank also directed the Green Mile. That is another all time great movie
i like that
