Great to see the old valient getting a new life
Have you seen the full episode on the ap5 valiant ? I can put a link if you havent?🍺🍺👍
It doesn't matter what you do Mick it's always entertaining 😅
Hahah cheers Karl thanks for watching another mate🍺👍
Quite enjoyed this a bit of everything pretty sweet score on the valiant the old leaning tower of power
Slant 💪🍺👍
Hope the XE has a happy life at its new home.
I believe it’s going to be daily driven in Victoria mate🍺🍺👍better than where I found it hahah
Love ya work Mick, enjoy watching your shows. From memory I thought those tow outer studs screwed into the head, we used to unscrew them with vicegrips and put bolts in their place with extractors, good idea to use a sealant on both sides of the gasket where the inlet ports are. Those old girls were so pron to scucking air there 👍
🍺👍
Love these old Valiant's👍 my uncle had 1 of these & a SV1 in the 1980s-90s but with push button gearshift, awesome old cruisers with plenty of torque -doing 80-90 "miles" an hour down the highway & dirt roads too lol the good old days
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
Nice bit of variety in that , good stuff to watch as always!, that XE turned out a killer!
Cheers Ray thanks for watching mate🍺🍺👍
Your young fella likes giving dad a hand by the look of it.😊 Aussie Graham.
Yeah Graham he is contracting the sickness now🍺🍺👍
Please don’t stop making this content mate… bloody top job with everything you do 👍🍻
Hahah I won’t mate it’s going to be something someday Hahhaha
I love it mate🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 it should definitely turn into something mate you are doing really great content, great style, great cars. I’d be happy to give you a hand.
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
Another great epp Mick. Pisser was thinking when yousat down and said it's 5 o'clock, where's the can? You read my mind! . 🍺
Hahha cheers Dave🍺🍺👍
The bloopers are classic…. Love the helmet😂😂😂
Cheers David yeah I’ve got lumps on my rough melon like two devil horns hahah👍🍺
Great stuff as always , helmet at the end, gold!
Cheers Ad man 🍺👍
im loving the ap5 already mopar brings back old memories
Stick around mate it’s coming🍺👍
Thanks for giving us something!
My new favourite channel!
Cheers Sick🍺🍺👍
AP5 is an early 1963 going by the wipers set for left hand drive. Body stamping = AP5-2 (standard manual trans) 4918. Looks to be in far better condition than mine was when I started.
I just hope your going to stay original with it. 👍
100% mate I reckon if your knowledgeable on them contact me on Fb or Instagram Backshedmick I might need your brain hahaha 🍺🍺👍
Those ap5/6 got up and went well ..nice score
I hope this one is ready to get up James ! She been parked for a while mate 🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 had an ap5 extractors n twin carbs ....... lost the ass end plenty of times great fun
Fantastic Mick. I can relate to this stuff being across the ditch from you, love the sense of humour too......"Aussie Vice Grip Garage".
Haha big shoes to fill there mate ! 🍺🍺👍
Glad to have found this channel mate......Boomer mechanic here.
You’ll love it here mate 60s 70s stuff everywhere Hahahha🍺👍
awesome day in the life of EP
Cheers mate thanks 🍺👍
Cool, love your show mate., really good watch.
Love the quirky bit in f humour you throw in as well..
Keep it up mate. Look forward to your next episodes.Cheers🍻
Thanks mate 🍺🍺👍
I got to tell you I think you are one funny bastard and I really enjoy watching. Keep up the good work!
I’m not sure about funny but I do have some ridiculously big eggs on my stupid head right now Hahhaha🍺🍺👍
The 202 I had back in the day used to bend the valve stems due to the manifold warping. solved the issue by doing what you have done. great work.
😳really
🍺👍
The AP5 looks cool! 👍
It might have left hand thread wheel studs on the passenger side......but you'll work it out!
I did think that mate I haven’t had an early valiant 🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 it will have some quirks.
Its based on lhd, the wipers will facing the opposite way! 🤣
They are mate I noticed that Hahahha good pick up 🍺🍺👍
Well done 4NDY I was going to say that. I thought I better look at the comments first so I don’t look like an idiot. LOL
Those old reds with standard exhaust manifold often had dowels where you said the studs had broken. When fitting extractors us old modern would put in studs and two of the manifold gaskets. To allow for extractors being not straight
Mick it’s not righty tighty , lefty loosey on the left side wheel nuts, it’s righty loosey, lefty tighty . Great vids mate keep it up ,looking forward to the AP5 going . I use to have a AP6 .
I keep it in mind mate cheers🍺🍺
I remember being 21 years old and owning a gold hq . Love the bench seat .
🍺🍺👍
my old 75 lh Torana had screw in locating studs which made the job easy, however by memory the older hqs etc were pressed in studs 👍👊
Your 100% right mate the later were screw in but this old cow is pressed in hahah🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 🍻👍👊💪
Cheers mate🍺👍
Good show, you got a laugh and smile out of me a couple of times.
Cheers Gary I appreciate ya watching mate🍺🍺👍
Poetry in motion watching you caring for these classics. I reckon every car I've watched you work on so far has some memory attached. Dad had a HQ sedan (white) and Mum drove an XE station wagon (chocolate or s..t brown). The Holden was a Holden, but the XE drove beautifully, and every now and then you might catch Dad driving it! Was listening to a podcast about the economy then switched over to find a new Backshed video waiting on the playlist. Awesome!
Cheers mate I love the memories 🍺🍺👍
There was a reason i give up buying holdens over forty years ago red motors would let go of pistons skirts for no reason their Bango diffs would whine ....or even shatter into pieces ...my big change was into ford back then never look back to this day almost 42 years later as a back yard mechanic i have owned hundreds of cars and still run a small wrecking yard to this day...its good to see u preserving classic holden and fords and Valiants...my hat goes of to u ..for keepig them running
Cheers mate for watching 🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 no worries enjoyed watching bloke brings back so many memories when i used to work on these cars myself i appreciated what work u do to them enjoy the beers
Cheers 🍺🍺👍
my youngest memory is being sat in the hot stinky driver's seat of these beautiful cars while my dad and granddaddy salvaged parts at the wreckers on Parramatta road
Hahaha 🍺🍺👍
Hint from a retired submariner. Wear a ball cap when under the car. 1. It warns you before you headbutt something (I.e overhead valves etc inside the submarine - and 2. helps prevent mud and shit getting in your eyes, hair etc.
Enjoyed the vid as always.
Hahah yeah I’m busted after that Hahha 🍺👍
Great video. Never tried that trick with the Trans seal. Have done it with a pinion shaft and bearing, put shaft in freezer and bearing in oven on low temp. With bearing warmed up and shaft frosty the bearing slid right on, gotta be quick. I don't recommend this with the wife home, not a good scene. Good thing she didn't see me wash the housing in sink. Hot water and dawn did great. You got lucky with those 2 studs, not really the answer was the smaller diameter bolts. That was a great fix. I need to understand why the underside of the car looked so great, and then you put in that rust looking drive shaft. Huh. Still thanks for the informative video. I look forward for your videos. Great content. I did cringe when the skidsteer came out to move that valiant over. Phone versus compressor, 🤣 still laughing.
I can answer the nice painted underside question mate and that would be when I painted underneath I must not have rolled the tailshaft over to get it all just got the side facing down hahah then going in I must have had it around the other way , probably the same reason the pan leaked ! Rushing . 🍺🍺👍
Loved the video yes it must be sad when a project go, but there is always another one
Or in this case another 10 or more hahah👍🍺🍺
Looking forward to the AP5 mate 👍🏻
Cheers Scott🍺🍺👍
Always learn something from your videos, cheers mate 🍻
Cheers mate🍺👍
'Ooh, she doesn't smell very Valiant!' love your way of seeing the world mate. I had a real soft spot for these and the earlier r series, Bit more grunt, and loved the styling ,but they were not common amongst my 'first car / old car' owning peers.
Hahaha yeah Brett cheers mate
She doesn’t smell real great 🍺🍺👍
Good mix of stuff in this one. Looking forward to see what you do with the Valiant. Thanks mate 👍
Thanks the Bin chicken I appreciate ya coming back I haven’t seen a comment for you in a few episodes mate 🍺🍺👍
Can’t wait to see the EP on the AP5 HAVE ONE MY SELF cheers 🍻
Cheers Mark 🍺🍺👍
I don't care what kind of eps you put up, just keep em coming. Excuse the the language but they are fucking great. Love see these old beauties back on the road and can't stop laughing WITH you. You make a great watch.
Haha language is totally fine here maté especially when I bash my head on the hoist 4 times hahahah
Thanks Evan for watching mate🍺👍
Can’t wait to see the AP5 content. My grandpa had a white one new with push button auto. It was his first non black Plymouth.
My mum drive or for 15 years. Then my sister, then me.
We sold it in the mid 90’s to a family friend who did a full restore.
I remember it had left and right hand threads on each side of the car, so the wheel nuts would not loosen while driving.
Every one came to see how the push button auto worked.
Wish I still had her
Stick around then mate the full episode is coming soon🍺🍺👍
Great video Mick.
Cheers mate 🍺🍺👍
Gidday mate Baz here from NZ. I"ve only recently stumbled across your Backshed channel ....love your work humour & cursing.
Back in the mid to late '80"s my younger brother & i had Valiants he had an AP5 & i had a VC oh & the old man had a 245 Ranger.
was wondering when i'd see a valiant on your Channel brings back good 'ol memory's keep up the good work cheers mate.
Very shortly mate and I bought another while I was out there so another coming too mate🍺🍺
Hi Mick, yet another great video. Good to see a different style of video this time. Does your young fella enjoy mucking around with the cars? I reckon you would have made a good old school TAFE College teacher back in the day. Plenty of knowledge and could enjoy a few brews with the boys. Sad to see the Ford wagon go but you picked up an old VAL, how cool. Love your work and cheers 🍺
Cheers Craig I appreciate ya saying mate , yeah sad to see XE go but money don’t grow on trees hahahahah
🍺🍺👍
Looking forward to seeing how the ape turns out.
You won’t have to wait long mate stick around 🍺👍
Some useful tail shaft tips there. Later today I plan on changing my unis out in my EFXR6. After driving to Melbourne for MotorEx in my Soarer and doing 1500odd km in Lexus comfort, then jumping back in the EF with 490,000km on the clock I thought to myself, "was that vibration always there?" 😂
Hahaha 👍🍺
Holden sixes end studs were threaded, we always replaced with bolts when putting on extractors and the gasket for extracters were different to exhaust manufold gaskets. We just unbolted studs with vice grips.
The gasket is just what I could get quick mate it’ll do , yeah I’ve seen a few comments about screw in but even if they did screw out I’m not fighting with 50yr old threads that if they snap guess what ? Youll be drilling out holes or if there’s any hanging out of the block You’ll then be doing it the way I did it so it’s the simplest way for me right now🍺🍺👍
Great content Bloke, reminds me of teenage years out on the farm and me mates around talking car shit on a Sunday afternoon.
Haha 100% mate🍺🍺👍
I really enjoy your videos keep them coming, more on the XP ute please
Cheers Howard🍺🍺👍
Another great video again man keep ‘em coming commodore next please haha cheers
Yep not long mate I’m getting a few bits as it’s crap Hahhaha🍺🍺👍
Ref welding on HQ, I know you did it but for the wider community always disconnect battery before welding to avoid frying alternator.
Yeah cool that’s one too remember mate🍺🍺👍
Mate the bloopers had me wetting myself. The crash helmet lol. Reminds me of Mick Molloy back in the day. Hilarious. And don’t forget to order a washer bottle for the HQ
Hahaha yeah thanks mate I’ll order that bottle . I’ve got lumps on my melon like devil horns Hahhah🍺🍺👍
I sure wish you would run your tires with the white letters on the outside. Would look so cool
Hahah I’ll think about it John
Cheers for watching mate 🍺🍺👍
Lost it with the beer and the helmet 😂
Hahaha 🍺🍺👍
Great video! I'd be putin some rubber around that hoist
Hahaha or wear a helmet Hahha 🍺🍺👍
Well done Mick - love the episode… love the valiant and looking forward to watching the next instalment on getting life back into the Valiant 👍👍👍
Cheers Murray thanks for watching mate🍺👍
Great video Mick
🍺🍺👍
Mick great episode!
I would never call you a muppet
Anything but !!!
Great tips mate
Looking forward to the AP5
Haha cheers Bat man🍺🍺👍
im loving vlogs especially today good to see you selling to make way for more cars
Thanks mate I feel bad but have too for the $$ . No such thing as a cheap old car these days 🍺👍
Have a look for the stamp on the inner passenger gaurd, it will be faint but it should be along the inside of the gaurd in the engine bay.
Great episodes 👍
Cheers Gabby 🍺🍺👍I’ll look
love the content mate. Cant wait for the to see what you do with the Val
Ya won’t be waiting long mate hahaha 🍺🍺👍
Love the intro mate, 😂 keep em coming 👌
Cheers Bruce🍺🍺👍
Another good one Mick
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
That thermostat housing on the HQ Wagon doesn't have much life left in it, she's looking very corroded! The water pump might be buggered on the inside too!
Nice burn on the cut bolt! Hahahaha 😂👍
Water pump seems ok mate but your 100% on the thermostat housing it’s not great BUT not leaking Hahha
It’s fine for now she’ll tell me when it need to be changed Hahha🍺🍺👍
100%.
Cheers mate🍺👍
Mate, the helmet at the the end was friken hilarious. I love that your brain is programmed for beer oclock at the mention of 5 oclock.
Hahhaha 🍺🍺cheers for watching Joe🍺👍
Good stuff mate.
Thanks Adam🍺👍
Noice hat, young fella 👍🏻
Haha cheers David🍺🍺👍
We always adjusted lash on the slants while idling when I did my apprenticeship many moons ago
🍺🍺👍hopefully I won’t need to do anything it’ll just run hahaha
I’m being optimistic as the rego label is 1985🍺👍
@Backshed
Carter 2 barrel swap was an old hotrod trick to wake them up a bit too.
Enough awesome vid , love the new head gear 😂😂😂cheers 🍺🍺
Hahah I’ve got 2 huge lumps on my melon like devil horns hahahahha🍺👍
You brought back nightmares for me, young bloke. Red motors and intake/exhaust were never right and even good extractors don't fit right and they cook the starter. I liked this video, still prefer when you go A to Z on a car but the odd video like this is a great idea.
Yeah Dale I do too mate but I’m busting my arse between working for the full episodes that are coming but I’m still getting messages “ when’s the next” Hahha which is awesome but I can only do so much mate🍺🍺👍
I've binged every upload in a week
Awesome stuff mate
Keep up the good work
Cheers mate I appreciate ya getting all caught up to where we are at🍺🍺👍
As soon as I watched the valiant door open , RAT TURDS popped straight into my head hahaha 😆
Hahahaha🍺👍
Should put links to the ones you're selling in the video description or something. Sure a few of the viewers would like the chance to buy one of the old girls
I’m low tech mate I wouldn’t know how to do it 🍺👍
Have to find a UA-cam video that shows how haha 😄
Mate your an absolute classic. The bloopers are hilarious & yet again another great episode.
Cheers Andrew i really appreciate ya watching mate and yeah I’m glad you enjoyed the bloopers mate I’ve got to eggs on my stupid melon like devil horns hahah 🍺🍺👍
hey mate like your videos, good to see old cars getting up and running again , i looked at a few comments about the 202 end manifold studs and i didn't see any as yet to say how to fix that issue, you can actually unscrew them with a good pair of multi grips or something similar, and then just use a couple of 9/16 bolts or pull 2 studs from the other red six you have there ,then no more ticking from extractors, however i don't actually mind sound of a very small extractor leak,if you have been told how to fix it already, well and good, keep up the videos
Cheers mate
Nah they are press in on the earlier block not screw in mate . Later HX-HZ they screw in but nope they way I did it is the easiest way I believe 🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 that's news to me mate, been around holden 6 engines since the old grey 138,replaced many exhaust gaskets on the red sixes and have always taken out the studs on the ends, and always by just unscrewing them, some could be a bugga to get out but never failed, from the red 138,149,161,173,179,186,(202 red blue or black )I have never know to be ever pushed in,however I just may have missed an early engine that this is the case, you can not see the thread on those studs when they are fitted from the factory which to a person who really don't know the old sixes, gives them the impression that they are probably pushed in
👍fixed is fixed mate and there done now regardless, 50yr old motor I’d say you would fight longer to get the stud out than just welding it like I’ve done 👍🍺
had same problem with manifold gasket so I used 2 worked great
🍺🍺👍
Always enjoy your videos Mick. Take up poetry as a part time job mate😂.
Haha poetry ? I’m scared to ask mate?
They’re locating studs fit the original Holden manifold which was much heavier & robust. When fitting headers/extractors on ‘red’ motors those studs on either end of head should’ve been replaced…or you end having what you’re fixing, leaking manifold. 👍
Hey Peter yeah mate I do make comment of the cast iron manifold and the studs in the video mate 🍺🍺👍
Great video mate another build on the way 👍👍👌👌
🍺🍺👍
Hey Mick those head stud blanks unscrew put a bit of heat on them and vice grips
Early ones are pressed in mate but I wasn’t that a chance of snapping 1 off mate , did it the simple way Hahhah🍺🍺👍
Great job Mick, the helmet got me giggling 😂😂. Cheers Steve.
Cheers Steve
Mate I have lumps like devil horns on my rough melon mate Hahha🍺👍
@@backshed5295 Mick HaHa 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love a Val, good tips on the gearbox extension seal, now know why mine still leaked on the Turbo 400, i did it all wrong LOL
Hahaha cheers mate🍺🍺👍
That’s the go, recovering rusty gold shows where the story begins. Need more recovery vids
Stick around mate they are coming 🍺🍺👍
Let’s see the ap5 👏🏻
Won’t be long mate🍺👍
Sad to see the long-roof go, Mick. I'd love one of those for a project one day...... didn't know you were selling it.
Yeah it’s been advertised for a while mate on gumtree and carsales🍺🍺👍
Great episode
Cheers mark🍺👍
I hit my head all the time lol great video mate
Cheers mate🍺👍
Love this channel mate. My Favourite Holden is the HQ and Holden’s in general but i do have a soft spot for Old Vals. Really looking forward to seeing you get that old girl back on the road 💪🏻👍🏻
Cheers Adam , Hq sedan is next episode mate and yeah do stick around for the Ap5 🍺🍺👍
Great to see a Val on the channel! Hopefully the old leaning tower of power doesn't give you any headaches haha
We will see real soon mate 🍺🍺👍
thanks for the video man
Your more than welcome Roo🍺🍺👍
Always informative Mick and humourous as well.. love the videos mate from over the ditch.
Cheers Grant I appreciate ya watching mate🍺🍺👍
All of these vehicles look pretty unique. Especially to a guy saying smack-dab in the middle of the United States. These cars harneet based upon their own merits. Thanks for taking the time to put this episode together.
Cheers mate🍺👍
Threaded dowls are normally removed and replaced with stud the hole in the head has a thred I was a exhaust fitter and we used a stud remover or weld a nut to the dowl
🍺🍺👍
Years ago I used to pull those studs and run a bottom tap down the hole so I could bolt the extractor flange. Can’t remember if the studs were pressed in or not. I’m talking 40 years ago now. 😅
Both from what I’m told , early were pressed then later screwed but either way I’m not fighting with 50yr old studs that can snap I’m just doin what I’m doin hahah🍺👍
Very entertaining Mick. These little jobs always turn into something unexpected. My problem also bumping in that dam hoist. Looking forward to the next one..
Cheers Ross I appreciate ya watching another one mate 🍺🍺👍
Not sure if your aware mick but those 202 exhaust locating studs are just knocked in. The welded studs will just pull back out. Taping a thread in the head will work.
I also noted the transmission rear seal had a drain hole in the rear dust cover. Im sure its ment to face downward
🍺🍺👍
29:40 a trick my dad showed me for stopping crap getting into the radiator, was to cut the foot out of the wife’s stockings and put it over the top neck of the radiator. It’s collects the crap and allows descent flow 🤙🏼
Yep 100% mate I’ve heard that 1 too but sometimes ya forget the simple things 🍺🍺👍
Yep many years ago a radiator repair guy in Brooklyn Park SA used to sell radiator socks for 10 bucks each they had a little magnet in them went into top hose gee you would be amazed how much crap it stops going into ya radiator that could block it 😉
A magnet. That’s genus.
Yeah cool , this one might need something soon.
But ya got to remember its there and clean it out every couple off months or it will block up and temps start rising 😀
Yer hard one wether to put new on. Great vids bro
🍺👍
Great episode mick. My hoodie is working a treat 💪👍. Yep it would be nice to have a collection of all makes and models but ya can’t keep them all……… calling dibs on the vb 😂.
Yeah cheers Zac thanks for grabbing a hoodie mate and thanks again for watching mate🍺🍺👍
Onya Mick look forward to every episode. Best show on TV and I always learn something new
Me too mate hahah 🍺🍺👍
Good shit mate😎
Cheers buddy🍺🍺👍
Thanks again Mick, I’m thinking you should run a whole episode with that brain bucket on😂
Hahhaha yeah maybe , got a few new lumps out of that one haha🍺👍
