I still go back to Double Vision only for Kyle. He built some of the sets too.
It always bothered me that they kept the version of the theme song for so long because Kyle sings pitchy. And he definitely got better in the newer songs.

Well said Frankie. A lot of people see their favorite UA-camrs as their friends. I think that feeling comes through strongly in content like what's in Junts cart. Just friends on an impromptu spree, joking and laughing together. What could be better?
That's how I feel. Well, I'm not insane so I don't actually think they're my friends, but in a different place at a different time...I definitely would have become friends with them.

I think it's awesome you've started going to church, Frankie. I converted to Eastern Orthodox Christianity in 2019 in the middle of a grueling battle with cancer, after many years of discernment. It was my second rodeo (with cancer that is), and the spiritual guidance of my church and our priest has been invaluable during my illness and the process of finding my place in the world again with these new limitations that the long term effects of the cancer and the treatments have placed upon me. My church has been a real blessing. I hope your church is a great spiritual home to you and your family.

I think this video brings up one of the reasons Junt has such an appeal. He is so sincere. His enthusiasm and knowledge for church fairs and box macs is really something. It reminds me of early James or even modern James when he talks about movies he likes.

On the note about JonTron: I honestly find it amazing to compare even his old material to the Screenwave Bames eea, because if you look in the credits of a lot of his stuff, you'll see he isn't the only writer!
He's said before that he'd sometimes sit and watch something with a friend, and be bouncing jokes off of each other.. Instead of Kieran sitting alone, writing jokes for James by himself
That's why James collaborating with other writers wasn't a bad idea, he just consostently made bad decisions to employ anyone from Screenwave to do it
Yeah, that's how the old Nerd episodes were made with Mike. People don't realize how much of a collaborative effort AVGN was from the getgo, with James and Mike bouncing ideas off each other, writing different parts of the script, etc.

His career seems to break all rules; he's had several notable controversies, he has an erratic schedule, his content has changed focus from games into something a lot more vaguely defined (infomercials?), but every time he uploads he gets millions of views very quickly. I don't really get it.

I won't mock James for the idea of starting a band, even though "a video game-themed band covering the best retro game tunes" seems rather overplayed. Going outside your comfort zone is a good thing. What makes the Rex Viper saga so funny to me is that they (or most likely James himself) approached it like a teenager who dreams big and gives up on the first roadblock. I feel like with some actual TIME and effort into it he could have a decent side gig going (if only for the novelty of having a band created by the Nerd himself), but why bother. I think that generally describes James's recent output well: "I have some ideas, but why bother trying".
Totally agree; to me its also the contrast to James's low effort on his other project (or in this case the only project which is AVGN) that makes Rex Viper egregious in comparison.
You guys talk a lot of sh*t for people, that far as I know, haven't done sh*t.
Also, Rex Viper is damn near the worst thing I've ever heard.
Ironically, James probably thinks that being in a band takes less time than "making" youtube videos.
His idea of having a band takes less time, yes. It's quite offensive for people who actually have a band. It's like the Frank Grimes episode on The Simpsons and James is Homer.
The Documentary "The Bill Murray Stories" seemed like a sad attempt to meet Bill Murray.

lot of people give mike credit, but he was the whole reason why screenwave took over cinemassacre along with Bootsy getting screwed over, over petty online drama.
He may have made the channel entertaining, but was also the source of the downfall of it.

Singer needs to drop down at least five semitones. You can hear it especially on the first "concert" that he's got nodules on his vocal cords. That stuff ain't going away any time soon, especially not if he maxes out his voice like this all the time. He's gonna destroy them vocal cords permanently if he's not careful.
yep.. my singer has nodules currently and is taken pro-active measures to minimize them and conserve her voice whenever possible/warming up when appropriate.
I really like her voice Josh, sounds unique.

The backlash for your first rex viper video, dancingwithghosts, really showed me how some cinemassacre fans refused to accept any criticism. Some of the comments I remember reading were so livid just because you honestly reviewed something from their favourite UA-camr, and didn't like it.
yeah a lot of their fans are very protective of James and refuse to be intellectually honest with themselves when having a debate.
I'm not a fan of musicians telling other musicians to put their instruments down because they aren't "good enough".
Which is what he did in that first video.

I really like the conversation about making fun of things that you care about. We take the piss out of our favorite movies all the time, doesn't mean we don't love em. Just means you have a sense of humor, and like something you know is slightly or even highly flawed.
I remember when I first saw a Rex viper video when it first came out, I simply asked where is Kyle Justin? I just didn't understand why he would start a band and not include him. I've heard that Kyle Justin is doing an entirely different kind of career now but I mean come on. He didn't just make the AVGN theme but he also did some other songs throughout various videos of the AVGN episodes. Double vision and his hilarious parody of the Addams family intro. Among others. His Christmas song of AVGN

I felt like they were genuine and sincere dudes, who were hanging out with this lonely dude(me) over a computer screen. That's exactly what I used to love about Cinemassacre.

The AVGN theme might not be a great showcase of Kyle Justin's technical ability but it's definitely a great showcase of his songwriting ability, which I think is more important. It's unreasonably well constructed, between the sequencing of the chord progressions and overall structure. Not to mention that you can feel the passion baked into it.
What I'm getting at here is that Kyle Justin is probably a better musician than anyone in RV, especially composition wise.
I don't know if counts as celebrity, but if you make a video about Tommy Tallarico, he will watch it and probably knock at your door asking for a chance to talk with you in camera.
honestly before the whole Amico debacle, i loved his work on the Earthworm Jim games. Some of the most memorable music outside of the Megaman X series on SNES if you ask me.. but his hubris got in the way somewhere along the way.

I'm glad you guys brought up Mike and Bootsy. Honestly, I miss James and Mike mondays. I definitely think that Mike made the show but the first thing that stuck out to me with Rex Viper was what Josh said about the mix. It was an absolute brick wall! Even being an amateur with audio it struck a wrong chord with me, but not a good one. (pun intended)

16:00 That's true about JonTron, even way back in his earlier days. He was at a convention years ago and showed a preview of an upcoming video, but that video ended up never releasing.
Josh meshes really well with the Red Cow crew, he feels more like an irregular host rather than a guest on the podcast.
James should just do sincere videos on anything. It'd sell better than anything he's done the last 6 years or more.

Kyle Justin is a good musician, he wrote a really catchy song with just a few power chords and a great vocal melody. Technical ability over creativity is boring imo. There's no time to do a 5:40 long solo.

To me it's just clear that James is bored with doing something that is mostly locked into the viewpoint of angry 20 year old man. He's been doing nearly the same thing for almost 20 years now. It's pretty much Urkel - after awhile hates playing a stunted character but the money coming it makes them unable to say no.
At least Jaleel White got laid and seemed to at LEAST have fun with the role all throughout the show. James wants to stop doing this SO bad, but he doesn't really have a choice anymore, and it shows.

That's very insightful what Frankie said about people seeing their favourite UA-camrs as kinda like their best friends. I'm a big fan of Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic), and obviously I don't think he's my friend or anything I'm not fucking delusional. The reason I like his content and watch his Nostalgia Critic episodes every week is because I can identify with him so much. He reviews movies I like with a sarcastic humour that is simular to my own. His opinions are also very similar to my own regarding movies. I guess in a weird way when people subscribe to a particular channel they aren't just looking for some form of entertainment but a "friend" who shares their interests and has similar opinions.
I think back to a time before UA-cam and the popularisation of the Internet and the invention of streaming services like Netflix or Disney+. People were obsessed with particular TV shows like Soap Opera's or cartoons to the point where if they missed an episode of their favourite show they wouldn't shut up about it for days on end. Now that we have UA-cam and streaming services content creators and online personalities are the new modern day soap Opera's.

The end of Gen X and the Start of Gen Y paved the roads that make the internet. We were the pioneers... why is it so surprising that we are a large part of the internet. Were just better informed so we know what is good information and bad information. We were the generation that said, you can't trust everything you see/read/hear online, and the only ones that apparently still do.we are on UA-cam and So part of some sites like Reddit, but we came from the Myspacian Era, we had to know html, just to use our most basic social media platform.

People give Mike all sorts of credit for AVGN but, just like the rabid fans who ignore anything bad about James, people all too often ignore that Mike was the one who refused to pay Bootsy, Mike was the one who started beef with Kyle, Mike was the one who brought in Ryan, Mike was the one who brought in Screenwave. He might be the major creative energy but he's also destroyed so much of James' career and even his personal life. Because James is too passive and weird to stand up against people, he let Kyle slip away. Kyle, the man who got him out of his suicidal catastrophe spiral, who introduced James to his wife (although considering how she behaves, that might not be the best thing), now won't even return James' calls because James didn't stand up for him.
