The "Mike and Bootsy" videos were the best, I looked forward every time for those. You had mike, you're more real angry gamer, then bootsy with his zen personality and a really great gamer. It was just fun.
Too bad Mike and Bootsy didn't like each other, or at least Mike didn't like Bootsy. Whole reason Bootsy left.
I'm shocked that series is still up on UA-cam along with the single episode of Bootsy Beats lol. I backed them all up to a hard drive years ago after I heard what happened between him & Mike because I had a feeling they would delete them.

Love how the difference between modern AVGN and Nostalgia Critic is that one is clearly a broken man who lost his passion far too many years ago due to the failure of his epic hollywood attempt but can't stop because he doesn't know how to do anything else, while the other man was broken from the very start and can't stop because he's actually in love with the insane things he does.

Been a Cinemassacre/AVGN fan since day 1 and had no idea of any drama up until Kieran quit, they all seemed like a bunch of cool dudes. I met and hung out with James at an event once and he was the most nice and chill guy! Seeing all these videos and comments are interesting though, goes to show no youtube channel is safe after all lol

I think the “rental reviews” show had a lot of potential. Albeit, the format was a bit disorganized, and they had too many chefs in the kitchen, but that set was incredible.
The set was amazing and it had potential. The problem was it just randomly showed up one day and people were like who are these slobs and why do we care about their poorly put together opinions 😂 if the execution was better and they eased the slobs in it would have worked much better

i honestly liked rental reviews when they were talking about a film i was intimately familiar with but that's about it sadly
Yeah the set was admittedly great. My main problem with the show was how none of them seemed to know much about cinema. It's been a while since I watched any episodes, but I recall their discussions being mostly superficial and surface level. I'm pretty sure there were even entire episodes where the name of the director of whatever film being discussed wasn't even mentioned.
And James, bless him, barely said anything substantive at all. I remember thinking after a few episodes, "James really does not know cinema history all that well..."
He seems to know a bit about his niche interests (golden age horror, for instance), but judging from his appearances on "Rental Reviews"...he doesn't know about much else.

I don’t know where else I’d be able to state this so I’ll put it here. James has made errors in the past so it’s not a big deal. I noticed that the Earthworm Jim episode was written by James-or at least it said it was written by James-but there was a small nitpick I have. He says Evil the Cat in the background gives him devil from Fantasia vibes and then mentions the music. He says it’s Ride of the Valkyries, when it’s actually Night on Bald Mountain, which was actually in Fantasia.
Edit: I’m not a truther and I only bring it up since I finally watched that episode and realized it was post-Kieran. And like I mentioned before, just a small nitpick.
Bimmy didn't want to say either bald or mowtan. Understandable.

I really respect Tarantino's choice to retire relatively early.
That generation of filmmakers, Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Jarmusch, a big part of their appeal is that they were like your nerdy friends who finally got a chance to make those movies they were always talking about. But past a certain point, you've been an out of touch millionaire for a lot longer than you were a broke film nerd, and then it's either talk down to your audience, or make something that they can't possibly relate to.
The belching woman sounded far more obnoxious than Kieran himself.

So let me get this straight: Mike and james made a lot more money and made about 2 videos a month, they decided to outsource which gave everybody less money cause they had to pay more people, and now they down to making 4 videos a year...wat has happened to cinemassacre??
From what I know Mike and James had Bootsy and Kyle Justin basically working for free. I'm guessing they started outsourcing when those two left the site.

As for mike leaving: this is just my theory, it wasn't cause he was overworked, it was cause james wanted to focus on music and other projects, that mike didn't want to be involved in as he is just a gamer...If he was truly overworked why would he still be streaming weekly content and in his free time still be helping james with editing his videos...
Dude, at this point, i think I'd rather see Kieran guest on the podcast than just about anyone. Even, say, Steven Spielberg or Sylvester Stallone.

Keiren was the best "slob" of all, i hate to hear him and Newt have beef.
One time Tony was gonna be on Shark Exorcist 2 and kept talking about it right up until Newt was fired. Then right when Newt was gone he announced he was NOT gonna be on Shark Exorcist 2, in the comments i asked if it was because Newt was writing it and the fallout.
the HTM channel replied something like " yeah Newt "wrote" (in parenthesis) a lot of things, but we couldnt be sure he wrote any of it, so we had ourselves removed from it."
but really the Mike and Ryan show was a great series they had. but if Ryan, Newt, Tony, and Kiern could work together (not all at once, cause they do clash) independent of pushing the AVGN "brand" they could do some interesting stuff.
James is best when he's like "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is 100 years old today, lets talk about how great and innovative that film was" Stuff like that, when he talks from the heart, is peak James.... even the corny Rocky 4 mouden, he is having fun not pushing content.
i wish all those Justin/AVGN/Cinemassacre/ Mike and Erin/ Tony ..... whoever.... would take turns coming to your channel for interviews to set the story straight. even James himself...

At first when Newt left HTM I was kinda sad. But the quality of the show since his departure has only increased. He was a drag on the videos looking back now.
@@senvivaviro it did, but the show has become formulaic and kind of boring lately, and Newt is doing pretty well for himself now...multiple movie screenplays sold, multiple roles in films, he recently directed a movie, doing a comic strip, UA-cam, still helping at the theaters...he's bounced back okay
@@JamesJohnson-tr1gu agreed. i've all but quit watching HTM, even if it's the closest thing to Rental Reviews left. Newt's channel on the other hand is killing it for me, SchlockAndAwe keeps bringing me interesting things, Tony's chanel has just gotten more and more formulaic, and trying to ride the almighty YT algorithm. i will still catch an ep that covers something i really care about and/or if Kristal Quinn is on there though, but that's the only way.
I'm a person who was on the cinemassacre truth way back before it blew up. Back then, the people that were there, really cared about cinemassacre and wanted it to improve. Of course we made fun of it, but it wasn't just about that. I've since abandoned the group, because of what it became. There are a ton of people there that never wanted Cinemassacre to get better, they just want to trash it over and over again.
The saddest part about all this shit with Screenwave is that James had a guy at the helm who hated his job, and the team of people he worked for. If you he smart, he would have tapped into the fandom. There were a lot of smart/funny people who loved him and would have passionately contributed.
Instead, it's been the blind leading the blind, and we now know that the entire team that screenwave is completely inept. What a waste.
I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call our channel successful.
Cinemassacre Truth started long before Screenwave ever came in and the show was still good. It started because Mike kept kicking people off the regular "official" Cinemassacre sub. That's when all the memes about him having a giant dong were going around and he'd ban anyone who made them, THEN he posted a photo of his wiener to "shut everybody up" yet continued to ban anyone who talked about THAT. That's why the mod's leaked their private chats with him because even they were getting fed up with him. We were forced to make a new sub to even be allowed to talk about anything, you'd get banned for even saying Bootsy's name in the regular sub. The overall decline of the channel started long after Cinemassacre Truth had been established

Same. I went to the truth subreddit because you could discuss episodes more freely without getting banned for doing genuine criticism of the show but it's just mean spirited posting against James, those tired "cuck" memes from /tv/ and dunking on every video analysis about AVGN that doesn't conclude in calling James an asshole or something.
I too want cinemssacre to do well but I’m also enthralled at looking at what it has become. It is sad in a way, because James had a very successful “brand” and image he could have had continued success I think. Sure, he would have to probably pívot on the angry nerd stuff, maybe evolve the character to something more in line with his older audience, but it wouldn’t have been too difficult. The truth was though, as weird as Mike is/was it seems like he was knowledgeable one on keeping the show going. James has made poor decision after poor decision on his own.
so newt set the record straight on one of his streams. Ryan said the monster madness scripts sounded too much like newt and needed re-writes. he gave notes last minute, no one checked the work absolutly zero qa is happening then then scandal happened.
He says he also had to rewrite his AVGN roast speech because he made fun of James being Autistic, when he didn't know James was actually autistic lol

None of the justification they've made is valid. You can't just copy and paste other people's analysis into your work and then have the plan of going back and re-wording it. Re-wording is still plagiarism. They act as if the accident was forgetting to re-word things, but the crime is that they copied other reviews to begin with with the plan to not only plagiarize but to hide their plagiarism by modifying words.

Franky's theory isn't too far off from the truth. To my understanding, the whole screenwave thing REALLY started around the time the AVGN movie went into production and Mike was put in charge of cinemassacre. James was able to use that precious 'time' to complete his movie. Having experienced how much time he saved, Mike somehow got in touch with Ryan, and started the Mike and Ryan vids. Then it snowballed as Ryan suggested screenwave to Mike, then Mike suggested screenwave to James, and that was that.
"Nerd pulling his hair out in rage" skit to cover-up his real life baldness would be a pretty clever and self-aware joke, James might actually put something like that in an AVGN episode.
But it's Bimmy we're talking about here

I randomly get recommended these videos periodically and decided to watch this and just feel incredibly guilty because I feel like I contributed to this downfall of the channel so to speak. So bare with me, this is a pretty nutty story.
Way back when James and Mike were indeed outsourcing their videos to a production company that now goes by Macintyre I believe. Anyway the dude in charge was a guy by the name of Andy. Around the time where Mike was doing his videos on Cinemassacre he had decided to do a review on all the 3D Spider-Man games. These reviews however were assisted by this production company and (surprise surprise) were plagiarized not only in just the writing but the actual footage being used for the reviews of which several were my own from my videos that they used, repurposed and edited to make seem like their own.
So, here I am a lowly little UA-cam channel having my words paraphrased and footage stolen angry that this massive channel that makes money hand over fist is screwing the guy who can barely rub two penny’s together on this platform. I got upset and called Mike out on Twitter and even tagged Pat Contri since he had a podcast and would cover stuff like this and plus, being close to James so I figure something would make it’s way over to someone eventually.
Mike and Andy then BOTH DM’d me on Twitter with Mike really pushing for me to take the tweet down as he “hated drama” and Andy being apologetic about the theft. After some back and forth, Mike would fire the production company, put (my old) UA-cam name in the description as a “thanks” for use of footage and seemingly thought we were squared.
It’s a weird chain of events that led to Screenwave.
Fascinating. It’s like there’s no escape from this cycle of shit.
@@RedCowArcade the entire thing was just bizarre. And Mike himself was kind of weird about it too. He threw his production company under the bus even though he admitted he had written some of it, still wouldn’t even give me a writing credit, or properly acknowledge what of mine was actually used considering they stole from 2 of my reviews. He thought that a twitch shout out and a description notation was enough which I was just like whatever about at that point. Not like I wanted money but like AT LEAST acknowledge how absolutely screwed up it is and make it right by that person. Putting something in the description of your UA-cam video which no one reads is hardly making things square. Makes you wonder what else they’ve been taking from folks.
It's awful that that happened to you. But I'm going to be frank. You deserve a lot more than a simple thanks. They should have contacted you directly and figured out some sort of financial compensation as well as a credit (not just a thanks). Plus an announcement and owning up to our publicly. It just sounds like they wanted to sweep this under the rug and keep screwing you over in the process.
I've had content stolen too (and it's why I don't UA-cam any more and my stuff is all private). It sucks and sometimes there's no good solutions. But never lose sight of the fact that what you do has value. Don't let someone take that from you.
I really like this high class Keemstar format of Frankie and EJ just giving commentary on interesting stuff that's happening in the creator space. I could watch this all day.

Mostly Frankie. I love how incredibly introspective he is with his responses. Unlike that prototypical neckbeard you will find it every Warhammer 40K tabletop game.
I think the biggest issue is that James isn't aggressive/confrontational enough and has been a little too hands off as he tries to juggle his family responsibilities as well
However, I think James is a genuinely good guy and just unfortunately doesn't surround himself with the best people

I think a good example of something carrying on without the people that made it what it is, is a band that no longer has or only has 1 real member left. Take the band YES for example, only Steve Howe really counts, the other members are hired guns or their former techs. It's essentially an imitation or in the case of a band, a cover band that managed to get the actual brand name and logo.
It's crazy to think that the Famicom started out with single screen arcade goofs like Milk and Nuts and ended up with titles like SMB 3 and Power Blade.
The Famicom/NES was only able to make those leaps due to the mapper chips. Some of the MMC5 games are running more on the cartridge than the console!
I don't even remember what these goofs were talking about. But the point remains the same. And yes I am aware of the mappers.
It really seems like James Rolfe just gave all the creative control to Justin Silverman. Justin, created screen wave with a bunch of his friends Kieran Newt and Jack the movies. I think because Justin who was somewhat moderately successful running silvermania with these people he thought they could take up more professional work with AVGN

This is why James' apology video is a lie. He only apologized for the one video, and Justin was going around acting like it was just one video too, despite at least 2 videos having been publicly available and exposed. To this day, many people still make statements as if only one plagiarized video was ever released, but it's not true.

I assume he must be the housewife in his marriage because he should be able to go through the motions and never use “time” as an excuse for the decade length problem of quality control. Doug didn't shave his Head. He went COMPLETELY bald in early 2017 due to Grief from his Mother's passing.
