Hey, me too! I haven't got my steam deck yet, but I'm due the next quarter! Definitely great for a truck setup, I've just been using a gaming laptop but would much rather not have to fold up the bunk to use my desk.
Same! Five years ago I was toting around the midtower PC with a 980 Ti in it and a Asus Swift monitor in its box into truck stops and company terminals. Really wish I had a Steam Deck and one of these monitors back then! Yeah I could’ve had a laptop, but I wanted to be cheap and get a bunch of power back then.

I understand the concept, but if we're gonna go this far I know an OLED gaming laptop would just be an overall better solution for a setup like this. It's cleaner and more travel friendly, windows 10 native support, doesn't require any cables, has a built in keyboard and trackpad good enough for multimedia watching, the whole setup would fit in your lap and be stable. It would be more expensive, but the steam deck is $600 for the top model, and 4K oled portable monitors are around $700. You can get an OLED gaming laptop for around $1100 used at best buy depending on specs. I saw one with a 2070 super for $1108; HP OMEN, and a 2070 super would massively be better at running 4K OLED than a steam deck. The biggest downside is the monitor would be tied to the laptop only. But if you already have an OLED switch, than it would be perfect I think.
If you want windows 10 as a priority then yeah probably, but for my personal needs, Linux is not only more than enough, but honestly preferable as I personally like what it has to offer (I understand that for 99% of people windows is preferred though and I can understand why). No need to go this overboard on the screen though as was done in this video, you can always get something much cheaper, at least for me personally 4k is overkill and 1080p is more than good enough, but that differs based on preference and what you play. The big difference for me is that I don't like using a laptop portably. Like on planes on car rides laptops are a pain to use, but something like a switch works fine. Pretty excited for my steam deck for this reason. A switch with its dock isn't really portable either, but you generally only take that with you when you have a reason to, similar to how something like this screen display would be. If any of what I said here isn't true though, I 100% agree that a laptop is the far superior way to go (like if you're ok with using it protably, find one with good parts + battery life, prefer win10, etc.).

A flaw to what you said is that gaming laptops in specific usually face problems such as overheating and life of those components inside it. For me having a gaming laptop was a pain after while due to the heat build up. the whole point of this video wasnt to convince you to get the Steam deck AND the monitor its showing you the monitor in general the use of it depends completely on you. Fill that sucker up with ice from the ice machine, seal it tight, then sit it on top of my phone and I can game for a long time without worrying that the phone will heat throttle.
I have a less high def portable monitor that I love with a crummy stand. I knew some kind of stand product must be the answer but didn’t know where to start. Ended up buying a similar stand from same manufacturer on Amazon. Thanks for saving me the time researching.
This has given me an urge to buy a product or two from this review. My Steam Deck email should be coming in the next week or two according to the SD ETA calculator that some awesome people put together So great video and thanks for contributing to the Stead Deck community with these ideas/demos, I've been feeling like a kid at Christmas waiting for this so once the Deck arrives I wanna make sure I'm not waiting on anything else to still come in the mail hahaha
Hi Russ. As a fan, I have to voice my concerns about the lack of Kerrygold butter in recent videos. I mean, how else am I supposed to know how big stuff is? Hoping this message reaches you and let me know if you need me to hook you up!
I initially watched this just to support the channel, but based on your points and now that I have a Steam Deck... I think if I went on a non-austere deployment, this type of screen and that charger would be ideal additions for my personal items. I think the RP3+ or my modded 3DS would probably be my picks for an austere deployment, though.
I've had the innocn screen for 9 months, it has a feature that cuts out blue light and it's great for my sensitive eyes. I have to wear blue blockers when playing on my other screens or after a couple days/long sessions my eyes start to bother me. The price was worth it for that feature. Plus it looks great playing Metroid dread and running Samsung dex
If it's anything like playing switch in tabletop mode, I can say that you have to crane your neck to look at it straight on and it kind of hurts after a while. I use a switch lite as my primary switch and I find that much better. But this is def cool if you find it comfortable. We've come to a point in technology where we're literally bringing the tv with us
the oled panel itself is much lighter and thinner than the lcd because it lacks the need of backlight component, the majority weight is probably came from the battery and the chassis. btw the video looks surprisingly good with an iphone camera
I wish more of these monitors would just toss in a couple USB ports to use for something like mouse/keyboard that wouldn't draw much power. With something like the Steam Deck that only has one port it would be handy to have the functionality of a dock built in to just have less cables devices to lug around. You have to make sure the monitor has pass through power if it doesn't have a battery because some do not and will just drain your device.
There is a cheaper alternative. 1. Get a Cheap Chromebook 2. Get a Genki Shadowcast 3. Get USB to HDMI female adapter. You can get 1080p 13-15" gaming on the go for under $200
This looks like pretty fun setup although a bit bulky for me. I travel with my laptop for work on long trips so I think for a long trip, my laptop with windows and batocera in dual boot would work best. Already have 15 inch screen, battery life, HDI output to plugin to TV if available, and i can play windows and retro games on the same unit. However I like with you do, try many setups and see what works best, I can definitively see myself with something like this for a quick one or two day trip where I only take my "bare" necessities with he :)
I remember getting my first portable monitor for my ITX PC. I spent quite some time and money trying to design and create some sort of stand for the monitor. I completely forgot that smartphone stands are readily available in everywhere. After my first design fell apart, I conveniently stumbled upon a dirt cheap smartphone stand that fits my requirement.
This sounds like exactly what I had in mind for a Steam Deck fighting game setup. Do you have any means to measure input delay differences between these monitors? As I understand it, a 1ms response time can be totally divorced from input delay.
I recently picked up a portable monitor from amazon for working on the go (traveling for work). It has 2 usb-c port that have power passthrough. So only 2 usb c to c cables gets the steam deck playing on it and charging. I'd suggest you look into doing that so you don't have to have the separate power/hdmi for the monitor as well.
I feel if you were going to use all this for emulation you may as well just get a Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra with a wireless controller like a DS4. You'd be able to play up to and including PS2 games very well (even some fullspeed Switch games) and it would be a lot more portable and simpler to set up.
I've been rocking a portable 15.6'' 1080p Lepow Monitor and it does the job well enough. I pair that with a Genki Covert Dock, with a Switch OLED and Xbox Series S when I travel. Only downside is the audio quality is a DRAG...so I connect a speaker via the 3.5mm port. At that size it's hard to justify 4k, but an OLED screen would be nice.
I have the same monitor and it's neat for travel with a gaming laptop but has some drawbacks. Mainly the number of cables so I'll now travel with a pelican carrying my new sff pc, cables, monitors, and pc accessories. Don't need a USB hub anymore and found cheap tablet stands that have clamps. Easier to maneuver it
Great idea for a travel setup. I been trying to find a replace for my second pc and didn't want to go with itx build. This should be perfect for what I am looking for.
It's funny how we have come full circle. 15 years ago, everyone was using 14 inch screen and the gods were using 17 inch screens. I remember my first 21 inch screen and felt like it was a jumbotron. Now here we are, playing sidescrollers on a 15 inch screen again!
I use an Asus portable monitor that has the battery like the bigger monitor, but is the same resolution and size as the small monitor, and is $300. It was really useful when I needed to hook something up to my portable Deskmini A300 computer on the go, as well as hooking it to my Steam Deck and Laptop. I should try hooking my full size switch up to it, I only took my Switch Lite on the trip, and it doesn't work with external displays. I'd love to see Asus make an OLED version of their battery portable monitor. 1080p is enough, but I wouldn't mind paying another $50-100 for an oled. I have a cheaper monitor as well, but it's USB-C only and doesn't support HDMI, so really the only thing I can plug it into is my laptop. It is very nice to have both portable monitors though because it lets me have a triple-screen setup on the go.
I did the similar for one month, but I like your wall charger idea, even I m not sure it will break your switch someday (like some of this hubs maybe did in the past - have no experience with it, because none of my usb c hubs get a TV signal). I have a Innocn non OLED TV 1080P with touch (pretty useless for me) and a wall mount, where I can I simply hang my monitor in. Then I have the opportunity to to connected my smartphone, Odin or Switch and have access to to a 1TB SSD. Sadly, my smartphone cant get retroarch to load games from SSD and my Odin could not connect to a FullHD TV via USB C, because it has to be 4K... So I get around with an HDMI switch and stored a lot of cable in a box and need some cables twice. So I wish I looked into this earlier.
If you're gonna be stuck in a hotel, just get an hdmi cable. For any other place it is way easier to just play on the builtin screen. No setup/teardown needed. No risk of somebody else bumping your portable monitor.
Is it really though? Is it markedly different than any $20 usbc alt dongle that also has power delivery, plus a regular charger that you already have? Not sure I understand the appeal, especially in regards to hotel use, where a power outlet might not be close to where you want to use the display.
It has it up and downs, if is just you traveling just buy the cable to connect it to the TV all have HDMI connections, and go thru the menu to change it to desired HDMI port if not disconnect the one that has the cable box and connect it there, way bigger screen. Or if you have a some what good laptop the screen is as big as a laptop just get emulator for the PC or you really want a screen and you have an old laptop take it apart buy the controller for the specific screen and you could connect thru HDMI.
Quite interesting if it's possible to use handheld for work - video editing / graphic design / content creation - I dont see why not and it sounds like a really cool setup on the budget / on the go. Portable, Gamer setup +work, all boxes ticket.
I wish you can do a good review of portable monitors, ones that are actually affordable Please! I am really putting together a setup and you are my favorite channel! Thank you!
For whatever reason, when I brought the OLED one, there was no brightness control and the display was rather dim even for an OLED. Had to return it. Got the Samsung OLED tablet for a little bit more which has incredible brightness being the same panel as the Samsung Galaxy phones.
It blows my mind how cheap you can get high quality portable monitors nowadays. When I was a kid, I remember buying a tiny CRT black and white TV from a garage sale for about $5 and me and my brother played NES games on that thing for years.. not experiencing color in games for awhile. lol
did you even click the amazon links? It costs $800... you're not making any sense. I expected you to say the old crt costed like 2K for you to say that 800 is cheap for such high quality but no, its $5? I am so confused
@@yeahnah6763 Yeah after I watched the video I realized he was talking about the $150 one. When he said "of that high quality" my brain, being used to high quality screens assumed that high quality mean the 4K OLED HDR screen, and not the decent one. Interesting how since our lives are so different that a high quality screen can mean different things.
Is the 4k resolution actually a negative as you’ll either be playing games at non-native resolutions or sacrificing performance, and these small devices not exactly having the grunt for all the games at those resolutions? Sorry if you mentioned this already and I missed it. You take fast (which I totally appreciate, never change!)
I tried a similar setup with my Deck but quickly realized I had assembled the worlds most cumbersome laptop. I still use this setup but I leave it on my night stand and dock my Deck when I want to play games in bed. It's just not as portable as I thought it would be.
They need to cut that oh led touchscreen from 4K to 2K or 1080 P and make the price around 300 bucks. That would be a total winner. I think 4K is a ridiculous option when, a good portion of the crowd is gonna be handhelds that don’t hit 4K anyway.
I bought the 13.3” 1080p model and I have to say, this screen is very sharp and beautiful. It was 200 euro. No touchscreen, but it’s fine for me since I don’t want fingerprints on it.
Great video but that Innocn monitor...wow. I thought getting a ProArt portable screen was overkill but yours make it look like I cheaped out. Kidding but also a bit jealous. Keep up the good work & if they ever get the OGU a stable OS, maybe revisit it?
Do you feel like this passion of yours of finding, reviewing, and playing with all these retro gaming devices and now spending most of your time making videos of these amazing and not so amazing devices is making it hard for you to do what you started out this venture in the first place - to play retro video games? I would imagine that you probably don't have as much time as you could have to spend on games, you know, like rpg games that takes weeks to finish, if you didn't spend so much time buying, reviewing, and recording videos and posting on yt. Not that I don't appreciate what you do for this community, but does make me wonder if this pursuit has kind of taken your original passion and tossed it out the window.
I'd say it's a mixture of both. I don't get as much time to actually play games anymore, but I get exposed to so many classics and new games that I had never even heard of. And I've always been the type of person who spends more time organizing game collections, or shopping for deals, than actually playing games :)
Just bought a steamdeck and found this video. My question that seems not answered is: is the oled 4k worth it for steamdeck? From what I can see deck doesnt output 4k for games, so seems kinda overkill to me. Is there a way to get the deck to output games in 4k?
This looks interesting! My steam deck is pre-ordered, but I've been wanting a monitor to use with my laptop. Do you think the 1080l monitor would be useful in an office set up?
Don't forget you could probably set this up as a second monitor for workflows, even from a laptop. If it's a workplace environment, like a desk you regularly work at, you might want to look at some sort of stand and cabling system you can leave there to just plug and use a portable monitor with. I use to use a GPD win 1 with a portable monitor and bluetooth keyboard at uni when I needed to get some heavier editing done. :-)
1 small thing to add about the acefast charger.. The USB A port will also work for peripherals. You can plug a flash drive into that, and your Steam Deck (or other devices you charge via USB C) will see it. Doesn't always work for a Chromebook, though.. Not sure if you mentioned this and I just didn't notice, but it's another thing that makes it a really good product
@@ajc71398 aye. I had a feeling it might work, but there was nothing about it in the manual. I had to dig through their website to see if it would, because I wasn't comfortable just testing it without knowing.. I ordered it right after I first saw this video and I'm currently using it for my Chromebook whilst I'm waiting for my Steam Deck (Q4)
You really have to be careful with third party chargers... In my opinion, it's worth it just to get the Valve Dock w/ the extra charger and travel with that. No chance of bloating battery. Then you also get the added benefit of the extra USB-A ports with the HDMI output.
I tried this exact monitor but my model had insane color bleed/chromatic aberration. Every white on black pixel had red on one side and blue on the other, and the low resolution made this super noticeable. Just a word of caution.
Thank you for being a UA-camr that finally shows what “docking” the Steam deck looks like with an external controller. Been looking for videos forever on that process and never could find one that would give me a straight answer lol
A thought about the portable screen and Steam Deck specifically is there are 16:10 portable monitors available, and 16:10 is a better aspect ratio than 16:9 anyway.
In my case. I have a Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra that works as both a tablet and Steam Deck monitor. I'm using Steam Link to wirelessly cast from the deck to the tablet and it works very well .
Ngl I want to buy the lord monitor not even for portable reasons but just as a docking station for both my steam deck and gaming laptop for my dorm room.
Before I spontaneously buy that AWOW for my Steam Deck coming tomorrow, how well does the AWOW hold up in bright conditions? I was watching another video and they said 500 nits is a huge difference compared to 300 or 250. What's your opinion on that? Is that as big of a deal as a video I've watched? I'll typically be playing my Steam Deck indoors, at my desk at work, or while out traveling on my motorcycle.
It does well in indoor situations, I have never had a complaint about the brightness. I often don't even turn it up all the way. I don't think it would be as good for outdoors, though.
Thanks for answering! Since I don't want to take a chance on a used one, I went with the $150 Innocen you have pinned. Thanks again for the video and answering my question!!!

1. Get a Cheap Chromebook
2. Get a Genki Shadowcast
Imagine bringing this kinda stuff in the plane. Shit looks like a bomb 🤣
This sounds like exactly what I had in mind for a Steam Deck fighting game setup. Do you have any means to measure input delay differences between these monitors? As I understand it, a 1ms response time can be totally divorced from input delay.
Hope not I plan on running Strive and Fightcade when I get mine
A Techpowerup review of the 1080p OLED variant said there was noticeable input lag.
I'd rather use something like the Genki Covert Dock that is proven safe for the Switch. Setup is nice thought
UA-cam algorithm @#$@#% first video from you for like 2 mos! Missed them.
My Steam Deck will be dropping in Q3 and I'll be using it with the Nexdock 360. I'm so excited!
If the world invents a tri-fold portable monitor would be the best thing for travel gamers
I usually don leave comments on UA-cam, but this is an exception, what an interesting video my guy, keep it up!! I’m subscribing.
It's funny how we have come full circle. 15 years ago, everyone was using 14 inch screen and the gods were using 17 inch screens. I remember my first 21 inch screen and felt like it was a jumbotron. Now here we are, playing sidescrollers on a 15 inch screen again!
I like the opening theme music. Has a Stranger Things vibe to it.
(Also, the Asus monitor's folding case stand has two different angles it can be in, so I never needed another stand for it.)
WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO....Oh wait, that actually seems like something I'd totally want to try😄. Good stuff!
That charger alone is a game changer. Holy crap.
Ooh I like this type of setup 👀 I’ll have to bookmark this for an office setup myself. Time to put together a backpack setup put together.
I was just thinking about something like this, please keep me updated on anything you happen to purchase 😄
I got a 15 inch portable OLED and I love it for my steam deck
You should try the N Real Air as a display. Its pretty amazing to just bring a pair of sunglasses and get a large 120" display in front of your face.
Now this is quality of life improvement.
You showed the response time for the innocn montior but not the input lag. Both are important in determining total responsiveness of the monitor.
These displays would be so useful to stick on my wall while i work
That charger looks like a genki covert dock. Great vid.
Thank you!
The charger is by far the most impressive for me. I live in the Netherlands and can't find such an exact charger, so sad.
I'm looking forward to a future OLED Steam Deck
With a folding sceeen so it would look like a tablet with controllets lol
@@obvious_giraffe8386 folding increases the chance of damage, no thanks
wtf ur nostradamus
My Nreal Airs arrived a few days ago, so got 2 Oled screens now added to my Setup ;)
I think the monitor + hdmi wall plug combo would be great for Samsung Dex too
Awesome little setup for the frequent traveler. That 4k monitor price tag though... I'd stick with the 1080p screen any day.
Portable monitors like these makes me wish the modern Surface Go and Surface Pro models featured video in via USB-C.
clicking through your links, it seems like there is even a cheaper 13" 1080p oled monitor for about $180 from this company which is a great price.
@@ziggyzoggin only one of them was that expensive.
@@ziggyzoggin no worries we all have those days at least if you were interested in it you know it’s not a bank breaker now.
Integer scaling, plus the fact that any unused pixels on an OLED screen are turn off means it should used less power.
Its a hard sell with the lg c1 48in going down to $799 but i know that’s totally different but still a great monitor or tv.
Wow that gan charger is cool
I don’t need the monitor. But I want one
Me: I don't need another portable screen. I have a cheap one!
*Watches Video*
I need this screen now!
Hope I am able to do this with my Galaxy Tab S7+. Hurry up mail man!!!
Worth noting that Innocn has cheaper OLED panels if you're willing to give up battery and 4K resolution.
Good point, thank you!
I tried a similar setup with my Deck but quickly realized I had assembled the worlds most cumbersome laptop.
I still use this setup but I leave it on my night stand and dock my Deck when I want to play games in bed. It's just not as portable as I thought it would be.
Yeah that charger is the coolest part
Really wish Steam would make a 20inch 1080p/60fps OLED tablet. Then all you would need is a controller.
I love this and I'm on the hunt! But 60hz is the real drawback to these options. Looking for over 100 and OLED
Just bought a steamdeck and found this video. My question that seems not answered is: is the oled 4k worth it for steamdeck? From what I can see deck doesnt output 4k for games, so seems kinda overkill to me. Is there a way to get the deck to output games in 4k?
6:43 the four horsemen of handhelds
This looks interesting! My steam deck is pre-ordered, but I've been wanting a monitor to use with my laptop. Do you think the 1080l monitor would be useful in an office set up?
Definitely, I use my 1080p monitor sometimes as an iTunes display while I am working. I like having it as a dedicated screen sometimes.
1080i?
Good lord I havent seen that in some time
Upgraded version of the cheaper monitor is $80 on sale rn btw
1 small thing to add about the acefast charger.. The USB A port will also work for peripherals. You can plug a flash drive into that, and your Steam Deck (or other devices you charge via USB C) will see it.
Doesn't always work for a Chromebook, though..
Not sure if you mentioned this and I just didn't notice, but it's another thing that makes it a really good product
That's an awesome fact
@@ajc71398 aye. I had a feeling it might work, but there was nothing about it in the manual. I had to dig through their website to see if it would, because I wasn't comfortable just testing it without knowing..
I ordered it right after I first saw this video and I'm currently using it for my Chromebook whilst I'm waiting for my Steam Deck (Q4)
I have the exact same screen. Love it.
This is so silly it's impossible not to love it.
100%, it was a lot of fun to make and only about 20% useful :)
“I wish I had something bigger to play with” lol
if the ACEFAST would have 2 usb A it would have been a no brainer buy
I am worried about security check in US airports. They always ask to take out any electronics larger than a phone separately without sleeve case.
I hope the Steam Deck 2 has an OLED model; I'd pay a hell of a premium for one.
Very helpful, can't wait for the touchscreen version to go down a bit. $700 is just too much.
Yeah wayyyyy too much..
I'm using Steam Link to wirelessly cast from the deck to the tablet and it works very well .
how did you setup that please?
Double Yes. But im thinking going Steam Deck + Asus XG17AHP
