  • Are you considering a Porsche 911 996 Carrera but nervous about all the problems your hear in the forums? Bore scoring, IMS bearing, etc… This video should help you! PPI can bring some peace of mind. My 996 Carrera is in great shape. Doesn’t burn a drop of oil and runs like a top. In depth PPIs are not really available in Japan so I am developing a service such as bore scoping. If you’re interested please reach out. #porsche911 #borescope #ポルシェ911 #996carrera #project996japan #cardiy #porsche996 #carrera #ポルシェ996 #konbini #コンビニ

Jacking up the 996 and changing the shifter to numeric + the transmission mount. ua-cam.com/video/SnvzFGdKxW0/v-deo.htmlsi=sZ-ccqJ7ZcB75Phx

997.1 owner. 54k miles. I scoped from the spark plugs and it looks fine. No knocking or oil burning but does smoke on col start. I still lose sleep over it. My mechanic says bore scoring is overblown and that "oil is cheap anyway." Made me laugh!

@@mustuddd i run some molybdenum oil additive that’s supposed be good on aluminum cylinders for good measures as well as frequent oils changes. Ill check the backside through the sump one day soon as well.

fellow 996 owner here, kudos to you to do this in the parking lot in the middle of Japan Summer! I have a 996.2 and I just got my engine rebuilt after discovering bore scoring, so I know the anxiety

@@jonh9626 did you have any obvious signs for some time or did it happen suddenly? Did you go for the sleeves for the engine rebuild?

@@WKBaker4 I got the car knowing it had slight bore scoring during the PPI, about 4 years later I saw metal glitters in the oil filter so that’s when I know it’s time to get it rebuilt. But all these times the car drove fine. I picked the Hartech route with Nikasil full cylinders and semi closed deck here in Canada. My engine builder told me they know of a famous Porsche shop in Japan who uses steel sleeves. I debated for a long time but I agree with the engine builder that the different expansion rate between steel and aluminum would be problematic, so the engine wasn’t designed to be steel sleeves to begin with. So far I am happy with my choice as this makes my 996 as reliable as the Metzger engines in my opinion!

@@jonh9626 That’s awesome. It’s a good route to a reliable 996 Carrera. Do you recall the Japan shop? Hartech seems a safe bet. Did you bore it at all? I deal with CTE in my work but not in engines. If I remember right I did have a 80cc two stroke engine that was bored and sleeved. I’ll talk to my dad on his thoughts. Thanks for the discussion!

@@WKBaker4 yes great discussion! I have asked my engine builder to see if he remembers the shop name. I didn’t bore my engine out and use the money instead to buy a used Porsche 924S😂 but the car still feels stronger after the rebuild with new rings and lightweight pistons.

I just did water pump, thermostat, cylinder tubes, injectors, chain tensioners, transmission mount, engine mounts, 997 oil pick ups, sump, 3rd radiator and more all in my driveway :) I was just in Nagoya too so would have loved to meet up! I was searching everywhere for Porsche car culture too.

I was just in Nagoya and could have come and said hi! You can get the borescope in without removing anything from the engine , just the heat shields. In a pinch you can do all of it without raising the engine.

With the Cayman people say they get bore score and it turns out they just need to change aos, with bore score you get a tapping noise with the smoking engine, just to let you know.

My AOS has not been replaced. Also don’t have any smoke, oil burn, or ticking noise. I am curious of the condition and want to offer this as a service eventually to people and shops on Japan.
