- 2 x Whippings
Both these whippings are shown in real time.
The important thing here is to look at the hand movement and finger placements. Anyone can learn knots from a book but can you do them in real life and when it matters?
1) The Sail Maker's Whipping
Used for sealing the end of a rope to stop it from fraying. Can also be used as a marker in the middle of a rope
2) The Common Whipping
Used for sealing the end of a rope to stop it from fraying. Can also be used as a marker in the middle of a rope. More sturdy than a Sail Maker's Whipping and easier to use as a marker
Hell ya instead of burning the ends I'll come back to this video and try the first knot and when I fail at that I'm pretty
sure I can do the second one.
The second one (Common whipping) is far better just not as pretty :)
👍👍
Hope you’ve learned to tie a few? 😂
You should do some macrame you'd be good at it doing all these knots 😉😁
I've done a bit of that in the past :)
@@Bigwavemaster1 🤣🤣 me too , taught the missus , and all my kids know the difference between a granny and a reef ...Useful life skills
"Whipings" are called "Taklinge, Taklings" in german - you showed the classic ones - which almost will last forever if the line is well kept - and there are many more versions, also including usage different methods and materials, f. expl. the "burning" aof the end of a small "plastic-fiber" line to melt the end together - do not use it with big lines unless you have the fire-dapartment with you ;) -
well, it was a you for me to try to show you the german names for your knot-videos - keep up the great work, anyone who loves the sea and sailing loves your work i guess...
Very interesting.
There’s probably some health & safety crap about melting the ends of rope but it’s something we still do. For larger ropes they use a hot wire which seals the ends while cutting the rope.
Lol , " tie a knot in it " burn it or gaffa tape if got time..... however , much more satisfying to whip it. Those Opinel knives do keep a good edge , ended up making mine into a serrated blade using bench grinder as was making fenders from old multiplait mooring lines which tended to blunt the blade due to grot trapped in the fibres. Turks' heads , manrope knots , monkey's fists( with obligatory 2" nut!),pilot ladders, all the usual working stuff , always done properly as you know that the sea will shred it or rip it to bits otherwise. Proper job.👍
Thank you very much.
I always use a hacksaw for multiplat 😉
I'd a just used a torch and melted the end.
So do I 😁
