  • 3 x Basic Knots
All these knots are shown in real time and then in slow motion.
The important thing here is to look at the hand movement and finger placements. Anyone can learn knots from a book but can you do them in real life and when it matters?
    1) The Bowline
Probably one of the most important knots you will need to know.
This is known as a safety knot. If tied properly it will not slip or jam.
Even when put under great strain, wet and left for a long time, this knot will come undone when you want it to, but not come undone when you don't.
    2) The Sheet Bend (Again)
Probably one of the simplest, yet most important knots that you will need to know.
Primarily used for tying two ropes of different thickness together. The loop is made from the thicker rope. Also used for making the mesh in fishing nets.
This rope will hold under any tension, but only if there is little movement, and can be easily undone again.
A double Sheet Bend is more secure. this shall be shown later
    3) The Fisherman's Knot
The best knot for permanently tying 2 ropes/twine/yarn/string together.
Called the Fisherman's Knot because this is the knot used when mending or breeding a net. When the needle (bobbin) runs out of twine a new length will be added using this knot.
The Fisherman's Knot is simply made by using 2 x Overhand Knots (See Part 1)

Knots are not as easy as we think. I am self-taught, as I wanted to make macreme hangers for plants and things back in the 70's. But those knots weren't as important as you need them for, and it's very important to do them correctly when your life might depend on it. Thank you for the experience!

      Thank you for watching.
I find knots very important in everyday life. Ever should at least know the essentials and how & when to use them.

Exactly ! Marine knots have two main advantages : they provide secure fastening and are easy to untie ! Holy truth : the truth is essential ✓

Some are not so easy as others though.

the german expressions i know: "Bow Line": "Palsteck" a knot to tie an fixed loop which can simply be put over a dolphin or a pillar, one oaf the most used, and most wrong-tied knots - a wron tied Bow-Line will hold almost nothing..., "Sheet Band" : "Schotsteck" (almost a translation of each other words) in earlier days sheet were sometime lengthened with an other line, this knot ties them together - with the possibility to somewhat easy let the sail go, if nessesary. I used it only to lengthen a spring or so. "The Fishermans Knot": i did not know it before i saw your video - in german: "Spierensteck" ("Spar-Knot") but i guess it must be modified to tie it to a spar... the "Round Turn with 2 half Hitches" will be faster to tie - esp. if you are sailing in bad weather...

      Quite an interesting insight.
