For me, the most important tip and the one that is almost always overlooked is, know yourself! What kind of plant parent do you want/need to be? Are you retired and have plenty of time to devote to plant care, or are you a single mum with 3 children working full time? Are you a helicopter plant parent who loves to tend to your plants daily, or are you looking for something that looks good with minimal care? Do you like to take nice long vacations several times a year, or is your home your staycation destination? Realistically, how much time, energy, and money do you want to put into plant care? Knowing who you are and what you're able to achieve puts everything else into focus.
🐈 😻 🐈⬛️ love your tutorials! I've been gardening over 45 years & even as a seasoned gardner I learn something new EVERYTIME I WATCH your videos.... GAME CHANGER🎉
I find the whole Fungus Gnat issue interesting. I grew up in a home with soil plants and not a bug in sight. I'm in my 50's and have had plants since moving out of home in soil and no issue. The Fungus Gnat plague seems to have appeared in the last 6 years or so which means something has changed in the production of the soil. I went semi hydro to and no more FG
Might not have something to do with the production but with the storage of these bags of soil .... they are always moist & have no airflow ... maybe they used to take better care :)
Dont ever be sorry for your passion that's why we're here and keep coming back. I love it so thank you for sharing from your heart Jan❤. I am in NZ and we have GT foliage here which is what I use.
🐈🐈🐈 Great advice !! No two plant environments are the same ! Your plants will benefit from you paying closer attention to how they are responding to their placement and your care. Out of sight and mind equals failure !
When I clean our fish tanks, I save the "dirty" water for the plants. That's the only fertilizer I use and my plants have never looked better! 🐈 😻 🐈⬛️ 😺 🐱 😸
I have never fertilized any of my plants and they've outgrown one house and so many pots. Just ask my 4' wide aloe that started in a 4" pot like 5yrs ago. I guess they just like me 😂
🐈I'm always referring back to your plant spotlight/care vids and then adjusting to my conditions(QLD) Even how you style your plants is a big help! Love chucking your channel up on the big screen
Excellent Jan & Brad. I think the first time conditions really hit home for me was when I shifted into a totally different style of house as well. I moved from a modern sun drenched, well insulated house to an old house with high ceilings not bad light but definitely not as well insulated. The plants I had in the modern house & were thriving absolutely hated their new home so I had to make adjustments in their placements & buy grow lights to get everything back on an even keel. Big learning curve 😂😂
I moved in the same way late summer/early fall last year. My plants reacted in the opposite way though. They love my 100+ yr old house! They are thriving here with the 13’ ceilings, drafty original windows and covered East facing porch. They stayed out until the night we were getting our 1st hard freeze and holy cow they went nuts!!
@@FeatheredDreamStudio 😂😂 mine definitely like being cozy warm & we don’t even get hard freezes where I live in New Zealand. Our home is over 100 years as well. Love it, it really feels like a home 👍👍
Of course also depends on what the plants are used to - the plants that grew up in my plants room wouldn't handle the outside conditions well atm. The ones that always grew up outside are just fine :)
Hi Jan ( and Bradley) , you have the most practical, honest , and relevant advice and information that i see here on YT. In my opinion, you are the " plant guru " 🐈 😊
🐈 New to your channel but really enjoying your common sense approach to plant care. I got started with succulents years ago but thanks to being able to rent a space for my photo studio with great SW windows I’m now into aroids. Spent the last 2 years just figuring out the garden variety tropicals and now trying the fancier stuff. LOVE your moss pole videos, I’m making my own now and plan to transition everything that climbs to them. Being able to keep them compact and use lights really opens up the possibilities of what I can keep at home too. I also strongly prefer the look of growing them as displays with a definite front side as you do. Anyway, just want to say that I enjoy your content, and congrats on taking it full time. I strongly suggest selling merch. T-shirts featuring your cat, whatever! Lots of people who do UA-cam full time find that to really be helpful. Your audience wants to see you succeed. Also, I swear your accent changes by the day. Sometimes more German, sometimes more Aussie. It’s delightful to this American. Have a great day!
Wonderful list, thank you. I DO buy store bought soil, as it is economical for me. I just STERILIZE the soil before use. I have no major issues with fungus gnats since I do that, as well as use mosquito bits (especially if I top water the plants).
😺 I'm new to plant care so your information has been very helpful. I have two cats and I have one that loves flowers and plants which makes it harder because I have to be very careful on which plants are safe. Will check your other videos to see if you spoke about cats and plants as well!
I loved all these tips and in my plant journey have learned so much. A new one that I’m playing around with is air flow so thank you for tip 5! :) Another tip that I can think of, and really it applies to life but “know thyself” be honest with what you can and WILL manage. There have been so many times when I’ve gotten a plant because it was cool only to give it a new home a month later. Anyway another great video! Have a great day!
Good points. I would also say don’t be afraid of failure and try something. For example, for years my mother told me alocasias are impossible and then one day 3 years ago I bought one and had success and another and another. I realized it liked the conditions of my office, not too direct sunlight but indirect light. In fact alocasias are easy care plants for me like pothos. One of my black velvets went dormant and died last season and that was because I didn’t maintain the “heat” conditions it required in that room.
Thank you for being clear and concise in your video and making very valid points regarding different conditions and care depending on each person’s specific location. So important that people understand this. Once again thank you for another wonderfully produced video Jan.
🐈 😻 great video Jan. Agree wholeheartedly that had I been armed with this information at the start of my plant collection I would have saved myself a lot of anguish, not to mention money. The sense of failure when a plant is failing/died is real😕
You absolutely do try to get the message across and help us by addressing the topic of conditions, but it's obvious from the comments that it _really_ landed this time lol Especially 3:30 and it's the talking to we needed. 👏🏿👏🏿 I just love how everything in gardening applies to us humans too. 😌 Great video as always. 💜
😻😻😻 all excellent tips!!!! I have come to use all of them!!! This is definitely an individual learning experience for sure!!! You have to figure out each plant for yourself based on so many variables!!! Always something new and interesting and never completed keeps you young and engaged mentally I love to be outside in my garden and get lost pulling g weeds and grass is super meditative for me! I can “lose” a whole afternoon on one task it’s the best “ hobby” I’ve ever found and all my plant people are good people!!!! Kind sharing caring thoughtful 🪴🪴🪴🤍🤍🤍🤍 the best community!!! And love kitties!!! 🐈 🐈 🐈 bonus!!! Give Brett loves from me!!!
Great tips Jan! For the Europeans out there, I would recommend liquid gold leaf as a fertilizer. I have used it for almost 2 years and I have gotten great results with it😀!
Who is still asking Jan to troubleshoot their personal plant problems??? Can't you see he is busy making amazing videos for hundreds of thousands of people? 😂💚
Good info everything I need to know, I use a small fan desk size and just that size provided a huge difference to a certain area (display)of some plants, I counted my plants recently and I have 90 ❤🐈
Part of what im doing is adjust the potting mix. I live west of Seattle. I also grow orchids (55) of them. Like the orchids many need a different mix. In summer i give them 60-70%, 70-85 degree. In winter temps and humidity are lower.
🐈 Agreed with everything except the potting mix! I use Pro-Mix here in Canada and I have no fungus gnats. I just make sure to buy it from inside the store and not from outside (which is easy since everything is inside 7 months of the year). Maybe it’s proof again that a lot depends on conditions, even for the soil you buy.
I learned, in Canada at least, to never buy the bags of soil that have holes poked in them. These are the ones that have fungus gnats. I too buy the pro-mix or sunshine mix #5 (I think it is the #5) in the big bales and they never have fungus gnats. I have bought it stored indoors or outdoors and never had issues.
Thanks Jan and Brad 💙I'm in the UK and use Liquid Gold which you can buy through Soil Ninja (who do amazing substrates too). Every now and then I also use Great White mycorrhizae but you can get that everywhere (works wonders but don't fertilise your plants at the same time as the fungi need to grow first).
I always research the plants natural habitat and conditions. It makes all the difference!! I also (personally) dont like bark in plants. I was just telling a friend that I feel like that's where a lot of mold and gnat issues start. 🤷♀️
Finally someone who really explains why its so important to have the perfekt conditions for plants, this is why i had a lot of problems with so many plants In germany, especially in winter and especially in my flat i just dont get a lot of light and heat, so plants like alocasias just will not thrive here, even though i LOVE them, i had to get rid of all of them, now i only have plants where i know, they will live and thrive even in the colder months Also, i work in a garden center and when people ask me how to care for a plant, oh boy, they are overwhelmed when i ask them, well, how are your conditions, how is the light, is it warm, is it cold, how far from a window is it standing and so on And you wont believe how many people come in and ask me which plants can live in room with NO windows... Well.. Fakeplants
THATS WHY they make grow lights ✨️, my apartment has 0 natural light so EVERYTHING in my apartment is grown with assistance of good, bright grow lights! It looks like day in my apartment 15-16 hours a day. My plants are chosen by my conditions in my place. Lots of natural humidity ( no use for humidifiers)! Living in Texas, USA , close to ocean, thus lots of humidity even though I run my A/C 24 7
I have grow lights too, but how i already said, its also too cold in my flat during the colder month, i have very poor isolation, so heat just literally goes right out Alsocasias do not want anything under 17° celsius or they will go dormant and i dont like that
@VinaSash Understand completely, no issues here in lower Texas near the Gulf of Mexico!! Praying you & your plant babies are snuggled in this coming winter 🙏
Yes !! Conditions are so important to understand first !!! But people want that 'instagrammable' outcome so they often just go for the plants that look good rather than the ones that suit but are not willing to put in the effort !! And the question regarding plants in rooms without windows .... I get that so often :D haha
Agree with the soil. That’s why I purely use it for the outside plants now, all my plants they in semi hydro or getting converted to semi hydro :). You should check out my Monstera Thai con in Leca. So many roots 😅.
Hello 🐈. I love watching your videos. Thank you for all the information. I'm located in Austin, Texas USA I have a few questions. I love Kalanchoe, Orchids, Pothos, Monstera and all the beautiful ones you highlight on your videos. I know how to plant the orchids and the Aroid (thanks to you )plants. If I do not buy soil at the store, what do I use for my Pothos and Kalanchoe plants? The other day I potted 2 Kalanchoe plants using part of you aroid mix with Texas Organic soil. It was bought at a local hardware/gardening store. But what would you suggest for those plants that need soil?
a journey it is🍀 what works for me-here in austria- is "power"food pure organic fertilizer- onepump now and then, aroids, aeschinanthus, , ,they all seem to enjoy, thick compost soup but weirdly doesnt smell- good conscience+never burnt the roots 🌸
In the Nordics, there is a very inexpensive very very excellent and easy to find fertilizer that I use on all of my tropicals and (diluted further) on my orchids - it is Biltema's Seaweed Emulsion in yellow bottle. It's labeled as 'organic for fruit and vegetables' but it beats anything else on the market here short of imports (vastly better than anything at Plantasjen). It is easy to dose (10ml to a litre of water, or to 2-3L for orchid soak), it doesn't upset salt-sensitive plants like Calatheas, and it never burned any of my plants when used every 2nd-3rd watering.
Espoma organic is the bees knees! Made from chicken manure, bone meal and kept extract. It smells horrible but it works! I even started using it on my moss poles with great success!!😀
@sydneyplantguy absolutely!! Love how real you keep it. Things happen, plants don't always make it (yeah...they drop bottom leaves sometimes as they grow)...and not everyone does the same things in the same ways. Such is life. 🥰
Thanks SPG , I’m 100% agreeing with you. I personally always change my nutrient. I only use organic nutrient, so I try to vary as much as possible, in order to give a big variety of nutrients. I also make some nutrients myself, like nettle or fern purin. The only problem is that I’m living in a apartment, and it stinks 😂😢😅 Last thing: I’m using EM, and I try to create a living soil for my plants, so I only use rainwater (which is not evident during the summertime), to avoid chlorine.
If you let your tap water sit 48 hours most of chlorine will disapate, at least in my place. I check chlorine levels with pool water tester & works BEAUTIFULLY
Canadian here, a good alternative for GT foliage Focus (although available through certain suppliers) is Superthrive (formerly dynagrow) foliage pro. It’s also high nitrogen and balanced and can be used with semi-hydro. I haven’t found an alternative to GT clonex so I just seek that one out. 🐈
Just found your videos.. The first thing I noticed, was That you use much smaller planter pots than what I have been told to use. Can you add any information to that practice? Love everything I've seen.
🐈 I enjoyed this video and it makes total sense, you shouldn’t copy someone else’s care if they live in humid dark England, and you live in dry Arizona.
For me, the most important tip and the one that is almost always overlooked is, know yourself! What kind of plant parent do you want/need to be? @@sydneyplantguy I was very skeptical at first but every single plant took to it really well!
GT Foliage Focus is now available in Europe. It made a huge difference to my plants
Hello 🐈. I love watching your videos. Thank you for all the information. I'm located in Austin, Texas USA
I have a few questions.
Good sharing. Thinking there should b number 6 which is propagation (eg. cut away unwanted/damaged leaf). ☺️
Totally :) I always encourage people to cut plants !!
Jan, I ❤ your advice. I also ❤Brad.
Thank you :)
a journey it is🍀
what works for me-here in austria- is "power"food pure organic fertilizer- onepump now and then, aroids, aeschinanthus, , ,they all seem to enjoy, thick compost soup but weirdly doesnt smell- good conscience+never burnt the roots 🌸
🐈 Thank you so much! Great words to help general understanding!!!
Thanks :)
🐈🐈⬛🐈 love Foliage Focus. Amazing stuff 😊
😻🐈 I’ve just started on my house plant journey and am finding your videos very informative and helpful thank you 🙏🏻 🌱🌿🪴🌵
Happy growing :)
Espoma organic is the bees knees! Made from chicken manure, bone meal and kept extract. It smells horrible but it works! I even started using it on my moss poles with great success!!😀
@4:15 hello Jan and Breatzels 😺😅 I find this so satisfying, for the pure fact that your nature seeps through and I'm here for it❤
Also, couldn't be more true about the store bought potting mix🤦🏼♀️ the war is ongoing ever since I realized that! God, if I knew early days
Thank you so much :)
@@sydneyplantguy thank you Jan, too much of an inspiration and help from you 🌻🙏🏼
Thank you so much for this video!!
Thanks for watching :)
@sydneyplantguy absolutely!! Love how real you keep it. Things happen, plants don't always make it (yeah...they drop bottom leaves sometimes as they grow)...and not everyone does the same things in the same ways. Such is life. 🥰
Perfect easy to understand advice 🐈💕
Thank you:)
Thank you for another great video. Nugget (my cat 🐈), and I enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching :)
Thanks SPG , I’m 100% agreeing with you.
I personally always change my nutrient. I only use organic nutrient, so I try to vary as much as possible, in order to give a big variety of nutrients. I also make some nutrients myself, like nettle or fern purin. The only problem is that I’m living in a apartment, and it stinks 😂😢😅
Last thing: I’m using EM, and I try to create a living soil for my plants, so I only use rainwater (which is not evident during the summertime), to avoid chlorine.
If you let your tap water sit 48 hours most of chlorine will disapate, at least in my place. I check chlorine levels with pool water tester & works BEAUTIFULLY
That's the great thing about GT - no smell :)
@@lesliebegamkenefic5961 yes inderdaad. If I don’t have rainwater, I give boiled water 💦
Where do you get your Superthrive?
Thanks for sharing :)
Greetings from Sweden. Thank you for another great video🐱🐈⬛
Thanks :)
UK made (I think?) Liquid Gold Leaf is great and available to us in the Netherlands.

Thank you :)

Thank you:)
GT is definitely in New Zealand too. Big fan 😍
It is !!! :) I forgot :)
Bathurst NSW here. I use GT products as well ❤
Just found your videos.. The first thing I noticed, was That you use much smaller planter pots than what I have been told to use. Can you add any information to that practice?
Love everything I've seen.
Thanks :) HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT POT - let's talk about pot sizes (it's easier than you might think)

😺😺Great advice & tips as usual🐈⬛🐈
Thank you:)
The 1st one I wish I would have known: they are ADDICTIVE!! Lol🤣🤣🤣
haha yes :D fair point
🐈 I enjoyed this video and it makes total sense, you shouldn’t copy someone else’s care if they live in humid dark England, and you live in dry Arizona.
exactly !! :)
🐈 🐱 Great advice Jan and Brad!
Thanks :)
Enjoy your content!! Keep it coming!! 🐈 ❤
Thank you:)
