  • Russian media have been reporting the arrest of the army's deputy chief of staff on suspicion of taking bribes.
A military court in Moscow ordered the detention of Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin for two months, while investigations proceed. It's the latest in a series of arrests of senior Russian military leaders that began in April - although the Kremlin denies that a purge of military officials is taking place.

3:19 If you are jailed for corruption in Russia, it can mean neither that you are “too greedy”, nor that you’ve “stolen from the wrong person”; it can simply mean that there is some reason to get you off the game board. No matter what the reason is, corruption charges will always be handy and easy to prove. The system ensures that no one (other than Putin, of course, at present) is secure in their tenure at the levers of power.

Shamiev’s explanation is illogical. Putin wouldn’t purge a raft of senior generals just because they happened to be in post while Shoigu was defence minister. They do not seem to have been overly corrupt, at least not by Russian standards. They were sacked/arrested because they were deemed to be either incompetent or untrustworthy, and Popov was most certainly not incompetent. Putin cares far more about loyalty than competence, particularly when it comes to men with guns and tanks. This was not a new-broom exercise, or an excising of dead wood, this was a purging of anyone remotely suspected of being a potential future threat to the regime.

Gazprom has reported its largest loss in years, there are fewer men to work in factories and manufacturing, or any other industry. They have to pay high wages and this thins out the profit but there is no profit in production of weapons to the frontline of your own war.

At the current intensity, if oil prices remain stagnant around $80, their national wealth fund will be exhausted some time in 2025 and they'll need to start debt funding the war with China or India's help. Unclear if those two countries will want to earn EU's ire by further enabling Putin's war.
