      As somebody who absolutely despises sadomasochism like that, people wanting to "brag" and feeling "inferior" when others are bragging, thinking that society is a hierarchy and when you do XYZ you're higher when you do ABC you're lower, that's just the type of stuff that makes me go insane when I hear it. I unsubbed from SunnyV2 after his video on the decline of the Finebros. He tried to make the point that one of the reasons why the Finebros declined is because they started talking about politics which in reality the opposite is true. The Finebros “Kids React to Gay Marriage” video is their 2nd most viewed video of all time. All SunnyV2 does is pass off his own personal opinion as facts to an audience that assumingly wouldn’t know any better, which is one of the most manipulative things you can do as a content creator.

    Yeah...every SunnyV2 video I have ever watched has attempted to have this veneer of a deep dive video essayist on the UA-cam history, but he refuses to put in any journalistic work.
    Almost everything of any sort of empirical fact he states can easily be found on Wikipedia articles and so forth.
    And there's a very clear rushed and mass produced energy that's more reminiscent of a drama channel than a commentary or video essayist.
    He's also very obsessed with the idea that all these channels he talks about are actually dead when many are still alive and kicking.
    Love him or hate him, Ethan Klein is still very much making content. So SunnyV2's video suggesting that Ethan is now irrelevant is stupid. Same with his Smosh video. They are nowhere near as popular as they once were, but Smosh is still constantly putting out content. They're just not generating millions of views anymore, just hundreds of thousands instead. They have a more niche audience these days. Which is fine is that's what they're aiming for.

      "Relevance" is just such a funny concept to apply to UA-camrs to begin with. There are singers who most people agree are no longer relevant that still have higher stream numbers and more recognition amongst laypeople than the most wildly successful vloggers. This is a tough gig and the algorithm makes it a struggle to stay on your own fans' radar, but "irrelevant" is such a weird burn when 99.9% of UA-camrs are irrelevant when you go outside.

He focuses entirely on their literal UA-cam channel while completely ignoring the fact that they’ve shifted focus to their own streaming platform. “Channel views are less than half what they used to be” “they aren’t uploading diverse content on their channel anymore” these are clear consequences of pivoting to a different platform but he either didn’t do enough research to hear about the shift, or doesn’t want to mention it because it lessens his claims of catastrophic failure.

      1) So what? She's the one who won the lottery, even if she was being selfish with wanting to split up to keep the money, that's her choice.
      2) Sunny's video isn't at all concerned with whether or not this woman was in a bad relationship or not. It seems to just presume that because she was trying to get out of her relationship with the lottery money, she must by default be a bad and dumb person worthy of mockery.
      So even my most generous read on Sunny isn't great, and that's not even getting into the last person covered in that video, whose mistake was... donating to charity?

If the whole concept of the video wasn’t “lets mock these people whose lives took an extremely tragic turn after gaining amazing wealth, because *we* would never act as dumb as they did”, i think id find the presentation of the stories a bit more respectful

    There was a small youtube channel of a Scottish man who would tease Australians about their country not existing. You know, like a joke (and if he did truly believe it, a hilarious delusion). Australians (nationalistic) were overreacting like he killed their mothers, and even though it’s such a tiny niche thing, Sunny V2 covered it as a serious deep dive. That only added more crazy Australian “””patriots””” commenting hate on that random Scottish man’s small youtube channel. That’s the first time I ever saw a Sunny V2 video, and it was blatantly obvious that it’s another pseudo-deep-dive masquerading as essayist channel. Also, definitely got Australian nationalist vibes from him in that video. The hate comments under the “Australia fake” channel read like someone who watches too many new channels owned by Rupert Murdoch.

    In general, SunnyV2's videos are entertaining to me, but I think you hit the nail on the head when you observed that his kind of catharsis reads like a "fantasy of control", as though the ill fortune of a content creator converging with something he disdains predisposes him--and us--to drawing a cause-effect between their fate and the moral judgement we've rendered.

We aren't watching the exact same things we were 5 years ago on this platform, and people who are 5 years younger than you right now aren't watching what you watched either. Things change and evolve. Some channels do as well, and those typically are the ones that continue some kind of presence in the limelight for longer than normal, but those are the exceptions, not the average. No king reigns forever.

Look at channels of this ilk, they're obsessed with something "falling" or "failing" because it can't maintain the popularity that it once did.
    Why does everything have to be successful forever? Why does every project have to always be popular and eternal? When sunnyv2 inevitably sees his growth slow down when the algorithm shifts and stops promoting his style of content, or when people latch onto newer styles, or even if he doesn't want to make the same style of content, did he **FAIL** , did he **RISE AND FALL** ? Good recommendation UA-cam I’m proud of you. Sorry to comment before watching but: at least I’m kinda relieved that I’m not the only one who’s a bit miffed when I see comments under Sunny’s videos stating that ‘his _documentaries_ are so well _researched’._
    I remember that I felt something off when I heard him use the word ‘females’ instead of ‘women’, not in a scientific context, and still using ‘men’ or ‘guys’ (e.g. in a fitness guru’s ‘downfall’ video; can’t remember his name though) and not ‘males’. It always feels a bit weird and I’m personally not a fan of that- so I looked into his channel for a bit. Then I seem to recall some misgendering, so even more dubious. Lastly I’m fairly sure he deleted some of his older content because I remember seeing old videos mocking SJWs or leftists or similar… I mean it was a fairly old video iirc so he could’ve changed his mind... MAYBE.
    *edited to add:* so I've watched the video and I agree with you. Although you give him the benefit of the doubt waaaaaaayyyy more than me lol.
    Everything's my opinion but to me sometimes the intentions behind his videos seems to originate from (either/or):
    - salt;
    - a superiority complex;
    - a desire to clout-chase;
    - a desire to please the algorithm for the only purpose of money (and/or narcissism)
    The latter is totally ok I mean it's what most UA-camrs do, but in his case he doesn't seem to do a lot of work/research, refuses to go in depth but still pretends each video is a documentary, and portrays himself as objective when his own biases just transpire through his words (like most of us). The most work goes to make his content digestible and aesthetically pleasing for anyone so they watch his videos. The only work would be in his editing, *assuming* he's the one editing his videos ofc.
    So here's my conclusion on how I see most of his content: no substance, no depth, 100% surface level.

    Honestly the first Sunnyv2 video I saw made me realise that the video essay meta on UA-cam was leading to really poorly researched and insubstantial video essays. It was a video about how collegehumor died but it missed out tonnes of key information which even the slightest amount of research would have uncovered i.e. changes to the UA-cam algorithm, Facebook lying about view counts causing CH to pivot to Facebook, the fact that they had a backlog of content which they began uploading after funding had been pulled to keep the channel active a little longer.

    Immediately as SunnyV2 said that it was written in males' DNA to brag about money, he lost all credibility to me. Takes like that are based in subjective ideals of masculinity rather than objective facts.

      @@ratvaporizette I would not exactly be surprised if he actually believed in that.

    Would somebody just please make a “The Tragic Downfall of SunnyV2” video?

    I'm really glad you discussed this topic. I watch a lot of Pyrocynical and Cr1tical, and as streamers they react to Sunny's content quite a bit, and I've felt the same way about it. It always feels like a UA-camr getting less popular or "falling off" is this huge failure to him, when often its just a natural thing. Not every big creator is famous forever. I feel like this topic warrants a full video, I'd love to see you talk about this more =)

    A UA-camr bragging about their wealth? Unthinkable!
