For folks that can only afford one subscription (such as myself), it would be handy as each option has pros that the other doesn't have and vice versa. But that's just my opinion as an avid little joel enjoyer currently in college. From his perspective, tho, it may not make much sense for financial and/or other reasons, and that's ok :)

Behind the Bastards did an incredible episode on "Dr." Phil. It's titled "Dr. Phil Is Even Worse Than You Think And You Probably Think He Sucks."

It’s the same for Nancy Grace or “cringe culture” or Maury or etc…. One of my bestest friends dropped out of college three months in to live in his families basement and spend most of the day playing video games and smoking weed. It turned out he had crippling anxiety and couldn’t handle being that far away from his family. I later found out his dad had really severe mental illness and was constantly going in and out of the hospital as well as rehab. It could have been so easy for people to judge him but he got help and support and now he’s back in school and doing a lot better. It's peak Boomerism. He's more comfortable with the idea of a person aspiring to be a strictly-mediocre cog at the Business Factory (because that's safe and familiar) than he is with the idea of a person being potentially above-average at something that seems new-fangled, frivolous, and weird.
I'm reminded of when Dr. Phil advised an aspiring furry artist to only do art as a fun lil' side hobby, despite many good furry artists and fursuit makers making absolute bank.
Mind you, I am a huge fan of having a safety net and a backup plan (including having a college degree or the equivalent and some basic job skills). But, I think a person can be practical or pragmatic without giving up on their dreams and aspirations, and I think it's "cringe" when old people try to advise the younger generation about a cultural, political, and technological landscape that the youths actually tend to understand better!

I think these kind of feeling come from having a bad school experience and a bad experience with "entry-level" jobs. It took a while for me to find a job I actually liked, a job that allowed me plenty of time to work on my art on the side. Even though I have a degree, I'm not sure if it's helped me much at all, and I'll always consider my art my "real job", even if I'm not making any money on it. "Why do you have to support him if he's in college?" Because US colleges' financial aid policies are based on the assumption that parents are paying, so if he does go to college he's on the hook for the full amount you would have been able to pay, if not more. And that's if you're still helping him fill out the paperwork-- if you keep that info from him, he'll have to take out enough loans for the full amount. That's why. I agree that to an extent hard work builds character, but 5-6 figures of unnecessary debt does not.
(Edit: if your response to this is to say that the system is too messed up and kids should be going to trade school instead or whatever, I think that's fair! However, in this particular case both the parents and Dr. Phil treat the idea of college as an unquestioned good, and I am responding to their point of view specifically.)

Here in the UK the amount of financial assistance the government will give you for living expenses while at university is literally based off your parents income. That being that if your parents earn below a certain amount you get more money and above a certain amount you get less. The assumption is that if your parents have the means to do so, they should support you financially or have planned some form of savings for you to utilise while studying. Doctor Phil is literally worse than a Tory, conservative government in his attitude on the matter which is saying something!

Man, there are several relatively common "neurological conditions" that make a person completely unsuited for being a cog in the post-industrial machine. One of the most common is the obsoletely titled, and absurdly misunderstood condition of "ADHD," which can be simply described as a severe deficiency of 3 critical neurotransmitters in the brain. It's easy to understand the horrible life people have with this condition in modern society when understanding what these neurotransmitters actually do, how critical they are to basic brain functions that allow "normal" people to tolerate modern life (taken for granted by most) and the cascade of ill effects that are exacerbated by the expectations non-consensually thrust upon the middle and working classes by our current system. Other relatively common issues which can be related or independently cause similar problems include various forms of epilepsy. In some cases of these conditions, sitting in a classroom and trying to learn through processing auditory language triggers nightmarish focal seizures that can include feelings that range from anxiety to terror, visual, auditory, sensory, etc. hallucinations, receptive aphasia (meaning the brain suddenly can't process auditory language and the person only hears gibberish instead) memory distortions and so on. Most of these experiences are almost impossible for sufferer's to describe and because of the society-wide mental atrophy and the cycles of abuse in virtually every area of society, sufferers learn early to keep these things to themselves. Lastly, since no human being is evolved to live in the shackles of post-industrial society and everyone has to be beaten into submission to be willing to give up their autonomy, their own interests and passions and to sacrifice their entire lives to work a meaningless job for little reward and only with the hope that they will live long enough to retire so that they can one day begin their life before they grow too old to do anything with it, when a person who has submitted is faced with a person who refuses to submit, it is easy to understand the psychology behind why those people emulate the people who beat them into submission and continue the cycle of abuse. As far as I can tell, no human being desires to live their childhood stuck in a classroom for the sake of spending their adulthood imprisoned in a hellish job, always with some form of authority hanging over them, watching them, holding things over them and belittling them at every turn. Anyone who refuses to be understanding of a person with the guts to stand up against it, who talks trash to the person needs to look to their own memory of all the people who treated them the same way and ask themselves if they really want to retroactively justify the mistreatment and abuse that they suffered in their own lives.

Helping people in a way that’s actually patient and kind and rooted in a desire to understand without centering ourselves in the interaction is super hard. and i know being unemployed the rest of my life isn't sustainable (unless i manage to get government aid for my disability, which i might but i haven't tried yet)

The audience's reaction to Dr. Phil's boomer tiktok convinced me that white privilege is real.
