In my opinion, the greatest composer in the history of film. No disrespect to Zimmer or Bernard Herrmann. James captured the emotion of what was on-screen better than anyone.

“Hauntingly melancholy” is how I would describe the score to Field of Dreams. It stays with you long after the credits have rolled. In not having an overproduced, complicated soundtrack, James allowed to space/“breathing room” to allow you to interpret and free-associate your own emotions onto each scene.

Wow! At 3:38 I get chills and goosebumps listening to the "Irish theme" that James Horner composed for Ray Kinsella and the theme of Ray and Terrance Mann en route to Iowa. It's so emotional that I get emotional. And, yet, I love how Phil Alden Robinson summed up the second theme, that it's not any one emotion, but it's whatever you read into it at that moment. It doesn't tell the audience what to think, but it allows them to bring their own emotion into it. That's the power of GREAT music!

I was an aspiring filmmaker and one of the movie ideas I had, I wanted James Horner to do the score. I never had the chance to meet him, but his music is what got me into listening film music. The very first soundtrack album I bought from iTunes was The Perfect Storm by James Horner. Not soon after I bought the album and started listening to it in my head, I started to visualize a story. Rest in Peace, James Horner. You were my inspiration to pursue filmmaking.

Alas, the major league baseball Field of Dreams game in Iowa (August 2021) was an over-the-top success that included many snippets of the James Horner movie score -- that were uncredited or acknowledged by any of the talking heads even though Horner's ethereal music was a major part of the film's success. This 12-minute interview of Horner explains his critical choices of scoring and instrumentation, and emphasizes the tragedy of his death in 2015 at the age of 61 (when a private plane he was flying crashed). His music, particularly in Field of Dreams, was star-dust.
