    Could we please have one more Goldsmith episode where you delve into Troy's statement of "monetizing your passion" explored via the experience of the orchestra/choir performing Ave Satani from The Omen? I can't imagine that content wasn't a stretch for some of the performers and yet... what a performance! I get the sense Troy may not have heard / seen The Omen - he doesn't react when it's been mentioned. The tensions of belief vs job would be interesting to explore.

    LOVE this. Keep it up! Many themes of his are still so fresh in my mind YEARS later from being played on repeat. Work like his was so wholesome, there's still much to breakdown & take from it even now. Personally I feel the whole approach to "No Time To Die" could be argued as an attempt for that Goldsmith memorability, sure on the other side of the coin it's "another Bond theme" -- listen to how it's mastered. That's Eilish singing too BTW! Put on Chinatown's theme -- whether intentional or not his influence is still very much present & ty for taking the time to highlight that!

    Jerry Goldsmith earlier on in his career wasn't as confortable with Jazz as say John Williams, Dave Grusin or Quincy Jones. But I think he really did a great job here later in his career with Branford Marsalis improvising bits of the score. It sounds very similar to something that John Barry would write, which fits in a funny way, since it's a spy thriller/lovestory with Sean Connery, also I think I read somewhere that John Barry was one of Jerry Goldsmith's favourite composers.

Ever since it's been one of my favorite Goldsmith scores.

    It’s so cool that you have this deep admiration for Jerry Goldsmith! I’m very much the same way when it comes to James Horner! To add about using untraditional instruments, James Horner used an Irish pan flute ensemble for Field of Dreams and of course he loved to use the Shakuhachi even before Zorro! You can hear it in Willow and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!
    Could it be that people credit Hans Zimmer because he made the Duduk and other ethnic instruments the foreground? Whereas Goldsmith and Horner used them as colors? So to the average film goer or listener Gladiator’s score just stands out…snd then *bam* massive hit also?

    Here's a weird question: Are there Film Composer equivalents of "One Hit Wonders"?
    I'd be curious to know if there are composers out there that become known for one piece of score that they're not able to seperate themselves from (which may also serve as a typecasting, of sorts). If I had to guess, I could see this being the case for many old TV composers.

    I wanted to ask you Austin if you have seen the Spitfire Audio competitions? A year or two ago they did one with a Westworld clip and right now they are doing one for Stargirl on the CW. I thought it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the variety of submissions from different levels of amateur to semi-professional composers. You should check out the finalists for the Westworld competition and if you chose to share your thoughts I would love to hear it. I am submitting one for the Stargirl competition because it is a lot of fun for a hobbyist composer like myself. Jerry Goldsmith said that the soundtrack album for "The Russia House" was "too f***ing long" I tended to agree. Although Quartet's expansion added some different music that mixed up the experience so it didn't drag so much.

    In the time of the missile crisis the world was actually two people away from war, because Mao would have fired too. Khrushchev didn't want to escalate further than he thought was necessary, so he never gave them the means to fully build their own arsenals.
    But about music, I confess I was thinking Tupac on the hip-hop segment. About how to communicate ideas to composers, I usually to tell people to go look for references and, when showing it to the composer, say "This is the sentiment. Now make this work in your own style." (and to never show temp music to the actual composer).

    • @Jockolantern
      @Jockolantern 3 роки тому +1

      I was quite taken with the Ghost of Tsushima score as well. The work done by both Eshkeri and Umebayashi melds together quite nicely in-game and it flows well on the official soundtrack album as a solo listen too. Great stuff. It's not up to the level of recent open world experiences like The Pathless or Sekiro in terms of compositional creativity and putting a unique stamp on the specific game's worldbuilding (not attempting to brown nose in the case of the former, truthfully), but for an open-world action-adventure score that could have turned out to be very paint-by-numbers, the craftsmanship each composer showed is exemplary. Assuming there will be a sequel, I truly hope they both choose to return for it.

    another great example of early duduk in filmmusic is THE CROW by Graeme Revell where it also has fuck-all to do with the subject matter of the movie. Revell jus tused it because it sounded cool but god damn it does. ANd that movie actually was a big hit and cultural milestone (obviously not to the degree of GLADIATOR, but still), yet the score is overshadowed by the needle drops and don't get me wrong, the songs from that film are awesome, one of the best song-soundtracks in film history, but it's sad that it had to happen at the expense of the score because Revell#s score is severely underrated and the duduk int he opening alone adds so much to the famous mood and atmosphere

    • @awintory
      @awintory 3 роки тому +3

      And before all those, I believe the earliest mainstream big film was Peter Gabriel's work on THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. Goldsmith's stands out for me because of his unique blend w/ the slinky jazz .But yah, Revell is under-appreciated, especially for those 90s scores
