My all-time fav dressing. LOVE the concept of your channel--I love the history of foods and stories surrounding vintage recipes. I grew up in the 70s/80s and I still have all of my mom's original family recipes. I made homemade sourdough cinnamon rolls today from her potato starter/sourdough bread recipe. Brings back so many memories. And I'm passing the recipes (and a handmade family cook book) on to my daughter, who just graduated from college.
Hi Lynn! Thank you and welcome! Isn't the story behind the dressing fabulous? Food history is my passion and that is what my channel is all about so I am so happy you found me!
Sounds like we grew up around the same time! I love that you have your family recipes in a handmade book and sourdough cinnamon rolls...YUM! Your daughter is very lucky! Congrats to her!

I love this woman... Why did I never find her before! 100% subscribed!
Also she must be the only person in the US who knows how to pronounce Worcestershire correctly. 👍👍👍
Hi Mim! Welcome! I am so happy you are here! This was my very first video. It's still one of my favorite stories but I was so nervous and had no idea what I was doing! LOL! Thank you so much for your kind words. I am honored. (especially with the pronunciation comment!) I hope you have fun exploring retro history through food here! 💖🍸
Would you do a video on green goddess dressing? It's impossible to find. I remember eating it as a kid in the 70's :)
Hi peninahkitty! I'm so sorry I missed your comment! Yes! As a matter of fact, Green Goddess has been on my to-do list for quite a while. I will definitely put it towards the top of the list for 2021! And, I will give you credit for the suggestion! Have a beautiful day! 🍸❤️
Blue Cheese became my favorite salad dressing after I acquired a taste for it years ago, but when I go out to eat, and they don't have blue cheese, I always say 1000 Island dressing. That was my first love!
In all my food history knowledge, this is one of my favorite stories. It's crazy to think something so mainstream actually had a beginning. I love blue cheese dressing too! But this is a fabulous second-choice!🍸❤️
never had any idea there was such a long and fun history behind my favorite dressing. Thanks and looking forward to hearing more!

1000 Isle was my favorite dressing as a kid. I'm loving your videos!
Thank you so very much!!!! I am so happy you are here!!! 🍸💖
I want to personally thank Mae for this recipe. My grandparents used thousand island all the time! As for restaurants my grandpa W loved this place called chapter 11 in Kennewick wash. He loved their Indian bread so much he used to order a boatload of it just to take home. Lol
Oh wow Mike, this is so awesome! This was actually my very first video, lol! Had no idea what I was doing! But it's still one of my favorite stories. I looked up chapter 11. So sad it's gone. Would've loved to try their Indian bread!! Have a great one my friend! 🍸❤️
When I was a kid my parents would take us out to Bob's Big Boy in SoCal. It was a Friday night thing. My mom refused to cook on Friday. It was a neighborhood thing. We saw all our neighbors there on Friday night. It was normal to see everyone on our street at Bob's Big Boy on Friday night. I loved the comic books that us kids got for free. Our family of four could eat there for 12 dollars. I loved the dressing on the burgers. It is sold in stores to this day.
Hi David! I love Bobs, went to the same SoCal locations. You may want to check out my episode where I share the history of Bob's Big Boy and make their famed Blue Cheese Dressing! ua-cam.com/video/9-2Avh2596Y/v-deo.html

Hi Hostess with the Mostess! Welcome! I absolutely love your screen name! This was actually my very first video and still one of my favorite stories. You will always find the stories along with the dishes here. Food history from the 1930s to the 1980s is my absolute passion and I'm honored to share it. You're going to love the dressing, the original is always the best and especially homemade without all the chemicals in the bottles! 🍸❤️
I love Thousand Island dressing!!❤️ This dressing is amazing. I made it twice. The second time I added a few things, & it made it over the top for us. I added 1 tbsp minced garlic, 1 tsp onion powder & 2 tbsp of chives. I then added 1/2 cup dill relish also. It was so good. Thanks for sharing the story & recipe. This dressing was a must in our home growing up.
Wow, thank you and welcome!!! This is absolutely the original recipe! And I love hearing from everyone how they made it their own! All of your flavors sound so great mixed into the classic!!! I have a painting in my house of a freighter passing by Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands where this dish was obviously invented, having visited the castle on many occasions as a child sailing the Great Lakes. I always refer to it as the Thousand Island dressing painting
Oh wow CX!!! That is so awesome!! I wish I could see that! So much history! And if you are familiar with my channel, you know how much I love that and love when people share these stories!! How much fun you must have had! Childhood memories are such a big part of who we are now! 💖🍸

So post script - I happen to be surfing the web looking at sailboats to buy if I one day won the lottery, or maybe in a few years who knows, and one of the manufacturers happen to have photos of their boats anchored off an island with a castle on it, and in a few seconds I realized it was indeed Boldt castle, with the power house in detail. I made their photos into a wallpaper on my computer and love having to explain to people who see the wallpaper come up during a meeting that indeed I have been to that island many times and know exactly where it is.
@@cxa340 No way!!! That is just so wonderful! I guess you just never know! And I hope you get your boat much sooner than later!!! Thank you so much for the post script!!!!

I’m a new subscriber. Your show is AWESOME!! Keep up the good work! In regards to salad dressing, my favorite has always been 1000 island. I never knew that there is supposed to be eggs in it, but my favorite usage has always been on a spinach salad with chopped eggs and shredded carrots!
Hi Smokers Chuggin! Welcome! Thank you so much for your kind words. This was my first video and still my favorite story. Your salad sounds perfect!!
Hello Jill I loved ur shrimp cocktail 🍸video I love them its my favorite appetizer I like the old fashioned traditional sauce with extra horseradish yummy
Hi Mary! I love reading all of your comments! Thank you for the Shrimp Cocktail too! I love teaching food history! And the dressing, nothing wrong with mixing and creating new flavors! So happy you are here! 🍸💖
Thousand Island dressing has sweet memories for me. On my very first date (many moons ago), I was taken to a steak house that served a lettuce wedge with their Thousand Island dressing on it. I remember seeing the boiled egg and pickles in it. It was served on a chilled plate with a chilled fork! I do remember a little bit of a spicy kick (maybe cayenne?) There is no bottled dressing that comes close to the way this dressing is meant to be prepared. I've told my young nieces that Thousand Island used to be made with boiled eggs in it & they look confused ... 🤣🤣🤣 I'm going to make this homemade dressing the first chance I get. THANK YOU so much for the history of it and for posting it ... 👍 P.S. - I continued to go to the steak house just for that salad for almost 20 years.
Hi Loretta! Welcome and thank you! I absolutely love your story! Food has so many memories attached and that is a big part of what my channel is about! Great video! Who knew that Sophia's dressing would become so well-known!
In terms of the video, you did a very good job of picking good points to pause the recipe and give the background history. You also had the perfect mix of far away and closeup shots. Well done!
Well, thank you! It's so much fun to do!
This is such a wonderful recipes. Who knew it had such a fun history! Thank you for sharing! I have a question. How long will this dressing last? How many days ahead can I make this?
Hi Karina! Welcome! If you like food history, you have definitely come to the right place! This was my very first video and still one of my favorite stories! Any dairy-based homemade dressing, including this, should be good in the fridge for about two weeks. But I bet it won't last that long! LOL! I hope you have fun learning history through food here! Next to Uncle Dan's dressing Thousand Island is so good especially on certain things, In the late sixties Dad would take us to the Oregon or Washington Coast for family Vacation, I can't remember the name of the place but we went there on the yearly trips to get cracked crab and my favorite Crab Louie salad . they would bring you a huge heaping pile of crab on top crisp lettuce, tomatoes, hard-cooked eggs and other yummy stuff, you were brought a big dish of Thousand Island dressing to pour over it and it was just bliss, they also had a house dressing that was similar to Ranch but I always opted for that tangy thousand island dressing .
you mentioned Reuben sandwiches and yes thousand Island is a must ! I think it is great on anything seafood and it is also the "secret sauce" they use on burgers and fries , so tasty!
Mrsehj! I'm loving your stories! And I adore Crab Louie dalads! I love then so much that I created an episode all about it. I can't wait for you to find it! That's my particular favorite but Oregon has such amazing Seafood you can't go wrong there either! 🍸❤️
Hi Jill, never been a fan of thousand island dressing (too sweet for me) but so nice to learn the backstory behind it! Oh my, the first on-screen kiss? Gads! That must have been a hoot. Yes real mayonnaise......Duke's from North Carolina please. The only true mayo in a Southerner's kitchen. What a great story and such tasty stuff in it. I just wish I liked it as much as it's component ingredients. Outstanding education, video and recipe!
Hi John!! You found my very first video! LOL! I had no idea what I was doing and this was before I found an editor! But the story is still one of my favorites! The kiss was barely a peck, but what a scandal it caused!!! So risque!

Hello😃.. I love the way you made the dressing. So simple and that's what I'm looking for making a salad dressing. By the way, I have one question.
How many days, weeks or months will it be preserved in the fridge?
I want to make like 1 liter, but scared it might be destroyed easily.

How about a recipe for Mayfair Dressing? Invented in St. Louis at the Mayfair Hotel, perhaps at the time of the 1904 World's Fair. I love this delicious dressing...! The original has anchovies, and eggs and oil blended to make a mayonnaise type dressing. Could you look up the recipe and simplify it? I'm thinking maybe using anchovi paste and mayo? I'm too big a chicken to try it myself...lol...!
Hi tinkmarz1! Welcome! I am very familiar with Mayfair and it has been on my ever growing "to do" list for awhile. I love anchovies and it is fabulous!
Here on YesterKitchen, I always make the original retro recipes. So I wouldn't be adapting it. But I love your thoughts and encourage you to give that a try! And if you do, I would love to hear about it! You can always reach me on my facebook group! facebook.com/groups/636177563645306/?ref=share

@@yesterkitchen Thank you! And, I love your "purist" philosophy of doing recipes in the original tradition...although, for myself I'm a little leary of doing it myself and would rather find an easy way (but just as tasty) (am I lazy, or what...lol). However, like you say...I can adapt it for myself. In fact, I'm trying to reproduce a local creamy, thick, sweet to die for Italian dressing...I've got the ingredients written down for my next marketing trip. If I'm successful I'll share it with ya...! Again, thanks so much...and you have a great day, too...!
Thousand Island was my Husbands go to dressing. He would use it over cold or hot veg.
The perfect condiment for so many things! Your husband had great taste! This is still one of my favorite stories! 🍸💖
Great job Jill - I was born in the 80s, but I'd still like to make a request! Anything authentic from a 1950s diner - burger, hot dog, milkshake - all good 😋
I will add some diner food to my list! And, thank you!
Delish!
I love it! Thank you!
Your recipe was very good. However, some of the higher end restaurants like Cork & Cleaver and Ruth Crists serve a 1000 Island that is very similar in taste but is very “thick”.
Do you know how I get thicken it up?
Thanks!!!
Thank you! This is the original which is the only way I make it. I would guess to add more mayo but it will lessen the flavors. But give it a try and let me know!!
I love thousand island dressing the best dressing is from Lubys
Loved the story of its origin... and love the dressing. Some may beg to differ with me but sometimes I add chili powder to 1000 Island Dressing and it tastes just like Big Mac secret sauce. No it is not the recipe for it, but something about that chili powder and the dressing. I've made homemade big macs for friends and they always ask me, "how did you make the secret sauce?" But anyways, great vid and thanx for sharing!!
I can see that! I always make the original recipe here but love to hear how it gets customized over the years. Thank you for sharing!

You have to try out Gaido's famous remoulade dressing. From a Galveston restaurant over 100 years old! So good on a lump crab meat salad.
3 green onions
1/3 cup fresh parsley
1 Tbs drained capers
5 Tbs dill pickle relis, drained
1 oz anchovies, drained
2 cups mayonnaise (I just use Dukes but they have a homemade version)
4 Tbs creole mustard
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp white pepper
Grind the green onions, parsley, capers, relish and anchovies in a blender/food processor
Place the mayo in the bowl of a mixer
Add the creole mustard, paprika and white pepper, mix on med speed
Fold in the green onion mixture.

We do not have sweet relish in my country, what is it exactly?
It's a popular condiment, primarily chopped up sweet pickles although it comes in a dill/sour version too. Here in the USA, it's very popular on hot dogs and hamburgers. So interested to know where you are that this is new. 🍸❤️
@@yesterkitchen thanks for this. I'm in SÅ, here relish is onions, tomatoes/paste with some herbs&spices. Can be cooked or uncooked( made with vinegar and sugar).
I have a jar of sweet pickles, so I'll chop it up and make this sauce. Thanks.

There's a sweetend mayo?
Hi Salty Seawitch! Welcome! There is Miracle Whip, which is a sweetened Mayo that's been around since 1933. Very popular in the 60s and 70s. However, I'm not a fan and always use traditional mayo. 🍸❤️
@@yesterkitchen Ahhhh, yeah. That explains my confusion. I've never really considered Miracle Whip to be mayo. Have to agree, it really isn't that great.
This is pretty much, Big Mac sauce! Great on burgers, or as a dip for meatballs as an appetizer.

LOVES BAR B Q 💓!
I so loved Love's. Wish is was still there!
I grew up in the Thousand Islands, I love the dressing. I made this dressing in resorts there and I can tell you that this is not Thousand Island Dressing, It is Russian dressing - the ketchup is the give away. We would never put ketchup in the dressing - we used chili sauce. Some people also added capers with the relish. There is controversy over the actual story of the dressing and it differs between towns on the St. Lawrence River.
HI Benjamin! I love the dressing too and must respectfully disagree. This is not Russian Dressing. Russian dressing contains no eggs and does include horseradish. As for the recipe, this is the exact recipe Sophia (who created this) wrote down for May in 1907 (and specified ketchup). And it is that recipe she wrote down that May took to the Waldorf Astoria where it began its introduction to the country. There are indeed a few variations, however very similar to this. In general, food historians believe this is the one true legend because we have the written proof. Restaurants, no matter where they are, take the classics, make tweaks and call them their own, which is wonderful. But what would the world be if we only had one opinion? So I am glad you stopped by and hope you have a wonderful day. 💖🍸
