I’ve just done my wheel bearings on my 2003 110 defender, I’ve used the stake nut, the spacer isn’t a crush type like some on here say, the spacer stops the bearings becoming too tight, the nut is tightened to 220 nm job done.

Why not just use one locknut and bent it so it’s not going anywhere?

Loving your walk throughs, keeping me occupied during lockdown! I’ve just had a wheel bearing go on my Td5 90 and was wondering what conversion kit you purchased to change from the single nut type to the twin nut style on pre 1999? Or is there a better way to purchase all the parts required to convert from the new spacer type to the old adjustable type?
    Thanks!

Mine is the later type td5, 2002, so it is supposed to use the staked but, but I find the twin flat nuts with spacer etc to be a better way of doing it. I bought the kit off eBay , if I recall. Plus I had some existing spares .

Thanks IntenseDef - I have the same staked nut and spacer system so have just ordered a kit off eBay to swap to 2 nuts. I take it the centre spacer is just thrown away as it’s no longer needed?
Are there any other videos in the pipeline for the defender?

@@kitsrandomthings correct, I don’t use the crush spacer, it is too fiddly to get right and harder to adjust later on, if any play develops. I have a few more vids that I just haven’t really got round to editing.

Finally got to see the rear wheel bearing video. I also prefer the 2 nut system. I've got an 01 td5 and when it's time to do tge brakes (same as him) I'll be doing 2 nut wheel bearings all round. Also wondering about conversion kits or if I can just go to my Landy specialist parts store and ask for a 300tdi wheel bearing kit

@@garthbawden5550 as far as I can recall, all you need are the two nuts and tab washer, you are discarding the collapse spacer and the large stake nut, so it isnt a conversion kit. As stated in a previous reply, the older two nut method allows for adjustment further down the line and in my experience easier to setup. Like you I replace each of the staked nut setups, with the double nut 🤭 method as I come to them in general maintenance. Good luck

Why you did not use a spacer between the bearings?

I am answering to myself. Because the spacer between does not match the bearings width you can't anyway tighten towards it.
