Slain Tiger Shark on the Busselton Jetty

  • I could've easily predicted the events that would follow when the Westpac chopper flew low overhead and shortly thereafter, word reached me that a tiger shark had been spotted swimming around the Busselton Jetty... because it's the same story every time.
I arrived on the jetty the following day, and big pools of bright red blood covered the width of the jetty. I knew they'd killed the tiger shark. On the rare occasion a shark is sighted, the fishermen go into a frenzy, thinking they'll be heroes for killing the shark and protecting the community. But this little tiger shark was never any threat to anyone...
When I jumped in, I discovered the rumours were true. A small tiger shark lay dead, belly up just under the jetty.
The stark contrast of the beautiful soft corals against the dead shark was almost poetic.
The natural underwater beauty of this place attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists per year, yet pillaging of its marine species is still not only permitted but encouraged.
The shark was still fully intact. It wasn’t killed for the meat or the fins… People are scared of sharks, and people hate sharks. Because it’s impossible to understand them when you spend your whole life on the surface.
I found the line that hooked the shark… also discarded. Plastic fishing garbage is another big problem on the jetty.
If you feel as I do, please sign my petition to expand the Busselton Jetty marine sanctuary and better police illegal fishing at the link below...

Damn man…sad to hear this is a regular thing, although, not surprised having grown up in a place where people really seem to get their rocks off by killing animals. I just can’t understand it. Thanks for bringing more awareness to this; petition signed.

      It was accidental

I was there too. Completely accidental outcome. It was not even the fisherman who gaffed it. It was a friend. I suppose everyone wants to blame what they don't know 🤷‍♀️

Well it definitely didn’t die of natural causes. Whatever fishing practices led to this shark’s death, accidental or not, need to be re-evaluated to ensure this doesn’t continue to be a common occurrence on the jetty.

@@DingusvsWild won’t disagree with you there BUT according to the fisheries website, the fisherman didn’t break any laws. The fact that the local jetty likes to lie about the information on the shark also needs to be looked into . However, your video did in fact help the fisherman as it showed the shark was in fact of correct size (according to law at the moment) and still held it all its teeth. I don’t condone the harm of any animal but I don’t like blame being thrown around. Instead of blame being thrown around the laws and rules need to be amended.

@@lacyleroch4632 I 100% agree with you that the laws need to be amended if this is legal.

Whoever did that seriously has some issues
And whoever did it needs to be thrown into jail cause he or she is obviously not right in the head and kills things for no reason

It was an accidental killing. The shark got gut hooked and they tried to release it the best as they could but it didnt make it. It happens sometimes while shark fishing.

Yes sharks are beautiful.. put all this aside death and think about this…. There’s probably more sharks here than Cape Town South Africa. There’s deaths nearly monthly and also it’s legal.. mathematically speaking you should be more concerned with the local black bream population, or how the perch are eating all our native freshwater species. Or how about the millions of tourists that come down and impact the waters too. Or the boats that have been drag netting the bay for nearly 150 years nightly…..There’s more than a dead shark to have a chat about. Your just in it for the views
Why come to our home town and show people this ? A single dead shark, do you understand this town is run on tourism???? Your negatively impacting this town for a few cry emojis and views. This happens in all towns. Also you failed to tell the viewers that this is one of the most shark infested waters in the world and that it’s legal to kill sharks over here……... Just remember there’s more of this happening in your home country also. Come to the 2nd largest jetty to whinge.. I bet your still down here too. Shame.. if you have a problem with our town go to the fisheries. Don’t ruin our effing tourism because your a selfish plop who’s going to fly back to your town after all this Shizz you’ve stirred up. Ffs. You don’t live here. Your not going to deal with the repucussions of this single video… and also, taking videos of skeletons with not a single piece of flesh on them saying that they are wasted… all those fish were cleaned up and only the frames were left.. out of a few negative things you saw, your video is going to negatively impact the jetty more than anything else. Lucky your channel is small or I would of reported the video to the UA-cam authorities. Defaming a city

Did anyone actually see this happen? Can you woke mind-readers tell me the intent of the angler who hooked this shark? Why don't you head to Indonesia and harangue and protest the illegal fishermen who invade our waters, catch sharks, cut the fins off, then throw the still live sharks back so they can die? Or is that a little outside your comfort zone?
