I really like these mixing videos. These are very helpful to me. It gives me a lot of information about a color and it also makes me playing with my own dark red color
Oh I missed that you used Baohong in the last video! Wonderful! I love this color, it's got such a huge drying shift though, that's the bummer. Schmincke's is quite bright, similar to the one you used here. Daniel Smith's is so deep and dark. I want to try MG's, which is also dark. Bruce of Handprint does suggest you use this as a substitute for Alizarin. It's not a hue match, but he means for mixing, because this works to dull colors (reduce the chroma) very well like Alizarin does.
i think for all these mixing vids (dont know how many i'll do lol) i'll be using baohong on all of them. :). yyyeeeahhh me too, i'm not a fan of the drying shift either :( OOOHH an alizarin substitute, that's brilliant! 😆
@@awatercolourist really? is it your #1 right now? i feel like it’s super expensive 😣 when it became available on jacksons, i thought i’d try a few but turns out, nope.
@@PaintinHiding It is my number one, but not in terms of price. The paints that I really want to try are M. Graham, W&N, and Roman Szmal. Roman Szmal is very good and has the best price. I want to try MG and W&N because they are very romantic in my mind, MG more so that W&N… it’s cheaper 😂. W&N has a couple of unique colours that I would like to try. If I had to narrow them down then it would be MG for when I need liquid paint and Roman Szmal for pans. Schmincke and A Gallo come next, but I need to improve to justify the price. I am especially interested in comparing properly made handmade paints with manufacturers’ paints. I often hear that handmade paint is of a better quality and has a superior pigment load. Also, A Gallo’s paints do not spread wet-on-wet, so it is much easier to control. I hear that Roman Szmal are active wet-on-wet but they spread slowly it almost seems like they are creeping on you 😄; I think that is how Hannah Thuvsson put it.
@@awatercolourist duuude, you are sooooo thorough! i feel llike maybe i dont pay attention to flow as much. i just try to make things work. i really need to pay attention more haha!
Your method of swatching and mixing is so attractive. The texture on that Baohong paper looks amazing and I'll bet it's a joy to work with. Really enjoyed watching this - thanks!
ohymygosh i love your new elephant logo/opening screen thingy! it's so cute! and would also be a great sign for your door because i'm getting a "don't mess with me, i'm busy painting" vibe (in a cute way 🤣). Ok, onwards to actually watching the video .... i'm so easily distracted lol
wow this was fun - i learned so much. we have much the same taste and i loved the same ones, once you hit the teal/turquoise things got super interesting (love that mix particularly and a hint of color separation). i'm intrigued with the cobalt violet mix, especially in the gradation - i'd play with that combo for sure on a larger scale. i hope all is well and no more emergencies, take good care.
thank you!! i appreciate that! 😆🥰 :D probably my first animal painting. i've been thinking if i should change my profile image to this elephant but i just haven't made up my mind yet. 😅
@@IridescentJen haha yeah i got the impression we have pretty similar taste as well :D i think a lot of artists' palettes don't really interest me as much as Irit Landgraf. i definitely have some similarities with her but not 100% of course. but i feel like she's the only one i could watch and thoroughly enjoy u know? oh yeahhh, the colour separation is just so beautiful! i'm planning on a manganese violet for the next mixing vid since that one is granulating too. 😄
@@PaintinHiding i totally understand - irit always keeps me interested and feels relatable. there are others but it's more hit and miss. irit seems to give me permission to be messy and less perfection oriented and that is *very* good my mental health :) super excited to see the manganese violet mixtures! i'm no good at painting animals (yet) so am very impressed with your first go at it - wow!
@@IridescentJen yeeeess exactly~ i really appreciate artists who aren't perfection oriented either. i mean, i can appreciated detailed artwork but i just can't do them lol. oh it's probably not my first animal i've painted but definitely my first elephant and possibly the first animal i've painted since i got back into watercolour. thank youu jen!
The pb28 would make a great duotone palette. Look at where the maroon jussssst shades the turquoise in the long swatch, and the turquoise still holds onto its chroma, that’s really something! And there seems to be a very neutral grey possible, but i love the subtle shifts more.
@@PaintinHiding I think I am going to try to make my own mix of perylene maroon and cobalt teal in a half pan. It was my favorite mix of them all (but they were all beautiful). The tricky part will be the ratio being the maroon has such a high tinting strength but how fun! 😁
I hadn't tried Perelyne Maroon with Cobalt Teal yet, but just this morning I used one of my fave mixes which is Cobalt Turquoise with Cad Red Med. It makes a wonderful separating grey. I painted our grey skies this morning - we are having such a cool, dark spring here :(
ooooh i'll need to try that mix. not sure if i have a cad red med, i think i do, PR108. i'm having a pretty dark season as well, been having lots of rainy storms. :(
beautiful color and beautiful mixes, the mix with cobalt teal had insane texture! it's hard to choose a fav on this one ^_^ thank you for the great and useful video!
A very beautiful pigment. It was long on my waiting list. I find that a single layer of PR179 gives a beautiful colour but if you apply more layers the hue gets progressively dull. I think that the Handprint guy, Bruce MacEvoy, used it as a substitute for Alizarin Crimson in certain ways. However other artists consider Perylene Maroon to be a neutral tint.
i think you're absolutely right there. i agree with your observation. it's just one of those nice but dull colours. ah yeah! someone else also mentioned handprint and alizarin substitute! so cool~
I have this-but it is not a favorite. But your mixes have me more interested in it now. The Quin Gold is really pretty. Got my ShinHan Shadow Green-it is gorgeous! Thank you for the heads up!
Schmincke`s one is more deep red and the White Nights one is this deep, muted brick colour.. I love both! Beautiful mixes!! What kind of emergency, weather emergency? Stay safe x
ohh i didnt know schmincke’s is slightly different! i thought perylenes would be pretty consistent, guess not 😅 medical emergency but all good now, thank you 🥰❤️👍🏻
