As a pm fan, I appreciate not only how inclusive and in detail this list is, but how it ranks the villains instead of just the boss battles. I cannot imagine the amount of work you put into this, your dedication is outstanding.
Call me a simp all yall want, but in my opinion, Mimi is the best villain in the series, well at least my favorite villain. Her personality is intriguing, she has an obsession with rubees, which I find funny to me. Her design looks pretty and cute, especially her spider form. Her spider form is so creepy and terrifying, that I just have to love it. Also, I found it funny that she wears different outfit throughout the whole game. Mimi's theme is a theme that I'm always reminded of when SPM is being brought up and the theme itself is honestly my favorite theme in the whole series, along with "I'm Not Nice". Other villains in this series are cool and all, but Mimi is like the only character that catches my attention everytime I see her on screen. Knowing that TTYD is getting a remake this year (Happy New Year, btw), I have hopea that SPM will also get a remake sometime in the future, but it's probably gonna be in the next console, who knows. If I'm the only Mimi fan in this series, then that's just sad. *mimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimi*
For beldam and the shadow queen, i feel like its implied that both are much older then 1k years, its just that the event everyone remembers the shadow queen for happened then. Its quite possible that the specific event being referred to is actually her utilizing the crystal stars for the first time after making them, as I believe that gave her a massive power boost. I also think that she deserves a better score for story involvement, as even though you dont directly see her, she is brought up constantly throughout the story as the main threat. At the very least she has an amazing leadup to her. As for the whole power of friendship thing, i guess it could have something to do with the crystal stars being affected by their wielder? Either that or all that they did in that cutscene was distract the shadow queen long enough for peach to regain control for long enough to power up mario & co. We do know that peach is a proficient spellcaster when it comes to support buffs. As for the shadow queens design, her 'true form' always felt like it was intentionally incomplete, as if she hasnt had long enough to solidify and reach her full power. It kinda looks a bit like a storm or vortex around the possessed peach, almost as though she isnt in full control of herself. As for the whole grodus not forseeing the betrayal part, it could very well be that beldam never actually told him herself that the queen would obey whoever emerged, rather it could be that that was part of the rumours that she had been spreading for countless years.
I didn’t think I’d actually spend 6 hours listening to all of this but this was definitely quite a trip. It definitely made me think more about what made all of these characters I liked work.
This is probably the most accurate listing I've ever heard about any Paper Mario villains. The criteria worked extremely well too. If you do plan to work on the Mario and Luigi series, then I guarantee your fans would enjoy it. The criteria could be somewhat similar as well. Hope to see your channel grow more considering how underrated you are!
As a Modern Paper Mario defender, I actually really liked your work here. This video had some pretty funny moments. Also, kudos to you for putting some villains from 64 and Super below some Sticker Star ones. I would say Color Splash Kamek and Iggy are far worse than Sticker Star Bowser, though.
Welcome back! Your return is a pleasant surprise. The 6-hour video is ambitious, but the passion for Paper Mario shines through. Cant wait to see what you have in store for the future.
YAY! You're back. I watched your Dr. Eggman rankings and your K. Rool in Smash thing over and over again until you returned. Welcome back. Also, Bowser wasn't ALLOWED to have speaking lines in Sticker Star AT ALL. Chuggaaconroy did an extensive dive into why Sticker Star sucks.
Of course, with the TTYD remake, there are some minor alterations for some villains. Most notably Atomic Boo, who has their own boss theme (and it's actually pretty good). Then there's probably one of my only strong disagreements, being the Scissors theme, which I consider a 9 or 10.
Also, I think Macho Grubba is the best one. And with the remake, the cinematics really amp up the character. Plus I love the new boss theme for being extra intimidating (both in intensity and eerie-ness).
58:58 This non-reaction from Mario here, reminded me of the polar opposite of this scene, that is in Luigi's Mansion 3 when we as the player make Luigi catch Morty, the adorable director ghost, and Luigi is shown disappointment upon doing it. The Mario series have so much soul and that "Tanabe Trilogy" is complete alien to that.
1:04:10 Why Gooper Blooper have a 0 Story Involvement? Shouldn't he receive a point since he is the only one to be a genuine threat across the entire world 3 due to his poison?
This lack of reaction or emotion from Mario was pretty common to Paper Mario until Origami King and the TTYD remake, to be fair. The TTYD remake actually goes out of its way to add emotion and expression to Mario where he was almost totally static in the original game.
Good list, I think Count Bleck is a bit low though I feel like the flaw of his character is his fatalism and defeatist attitude, adamantly believing that he can't stop the prophecy, I get the impression that he wanted the heroes to destroy him and stop his plan, and you can see that after his boss fight when he completely loses the will to continue it. Count Bleck is also supposed to seem insane for his plan, it's unjustified, and when he learns Tippi is still alive, he stills believes it's pointless to change. I think prophecy is a big theme in this game, with the heroic Light Prognosticus not actually being a real prophecy, only a guide on how to possibly stop the end of the world, and the Dark Prognosticus being a true prophecy. Count Bleck believes in the prophecy, but think's it's too late to stop it. Dimentio completely believes in and hopes for the prophecy to come true. Prophecy represents the villain side. But I do see why people wouldn't like him. He still had the choice to *not* order his minions to fight against the heroes, and the choice to *not* keep fighting for his plan, even if he believed it was worthless, and he doesn't really get punishment for his actions. I don't like Olly, and I think the "wish" Olivia made could've been reworded not to kill her (or anyone honestly but at least he had to sacrifice everything to undo some of the evil things he did. I think you should to a Mario and Luigi version of this list. Recently I've started to appreciate the Shroobs more, they feel like they come from a different genre, they feel like kid-friendly horror movie villains and the destruction they cause is large. They don't have much dialogue and rely on their cruel actions to show their personality.
Dude I love your commentary on all the bosses! This video must have taken a lot of work! Paper Mario rankings of the villains themselves feel like a breath of fresh air rather than soley focusing on the boss fights! You've got a new sub! Maybe you could do Paper Mario Chapters/Worlds? or Partners/Companions or just a soundtrack ranking :D.
That was perhaps one of the most enjoyable, most thorough and well constructed look at the topic of Paper Mario I've ever seen, and I've been around the series for A WHILE. I don't blame you for not wanting to do this again, and holey moley was it satisfying seeing you dunk on The Modern Trilogy as it rightfully deserves to be. Between this and Chugga's hit piece on Sticker Star, it's super nice seeing people come out of the woodworks to show our united love and support for the ORIGINAL Paper Mario.
Back in the day's of the Tanabe trilogy (so back you could call it the Tanabe duology) me and a couple friend's had a running joke about a seemingly impossible direct sequel to TTYD, with thing's only got more and more absurd and less E-rated with the passage of time. One of these moments was a final boss battle against Beldam, with Vivian being your only available partner where she dawn's the former Shadow Queen's crown and goes through a flashy magical-girl transformation into a new GOOD Shadow Queen and fight's along side Mario to kill her sister.
Just stumbled upon this video, and its like a hidden gem! The commentary is so engaging, and your insights on the Paper Mario series are spot-on. Definitely gonna binge-watch more of your content.
Bowser in PM64 was so full of life, his character was somehow goofy and serious all at once, with his dialouge especially in the "Diary" section of Peach's section after chapter 1, this applies to every character in PM64 being vibrant, but Bowser does it best.
I fucking love this video (how could I not with the combination of a 5 hour video of indepth opinions on something I'm into and also rewriting things to make them better like you did with Beldam) but I must confess that I'm that one Bleck defender you magically summoned in that top 5 interlude. It's definitely fair if the character was ruined for you since you saw him as stupid or unsympathizable after he still decided to end the world despite having multiple allies to help him through his grieving, or you feel his redemption wasn't earned, especially since I'm a fan and not entirely on board with how both of those things were handled, but there are things that I have to bring up regarding him even if they don't invalidate your opinion. I feel like when timpani "died" and he decided to read the dark prognosticus, it was obviously in a time when he was totally miserable, couldn't imagine anything other than enacting his plan fufilling him, and just got totally indoctrinated by what was written in there because of that; so when he meets his minions after that, he's already too deep into the idea of destruction to fully think of them as friends or allies and not tools to help him fufill the prophecy. And when he wonders in the last 3 chapters if he should attempt anything to stop the void, he very clearly said in his own words something like "It's too late, not even I can stop it now", so he does wish for the world to still exist, he's just unable to sincerely imagine that happening from a combination of being too generally nihilistic and having been treating the dark prognisticus like gospel for so long. Honestly, I feel like the fact that the villain already regrets what he started but is too much of a doomer to do anything about that adds to the tragic element of the story instead of being something to ridicule. Except I lied and you are straight up wrong in giving him a threat level of only 6. the void he made that's going to DESTROY THE WORLD is straight up in the background of the level, entirely visible, for a good amount of the game, and we even see exactly how bad the destroying is. But admittedly I do respect the content and I'm not the one that is actually sittting down and making a 6 hour video with a significant focus on the story of this series
How dare you not rank the incredible villains of the Jabbis from TTYD chapter 2? This is unforgivable, they’re just SO memorable and well characterized, and their fights are awesome! Disliked, reported for misinformation, and blocked.
6 hours of pure Paper Mario goodness? Count me in! Your dedication to the series is commendable. Its like revisiting old friends. Cant wait to see more content from you!
I'm pretty sure Kamek/Ludwig saying it's his first time facing Mario is because of them being their paper versions, Paper Jam confirmed they are different universes after all (plus Kamek first appearance in the paper games was in SS, due to Kammy being in the older games)
"tanabe triology" my brother in christ, tanabe was the producer since super paper mario it's so weird how paper mario fans try to put everything they don't like in the games as tanabe's fault, like he's the only person designing the entire game. hell, he's not even the director, he's just the producer, it just feels like people want a scapegoat to put all the blame and forget that making games is a colective effort. also, the reason olly doesn't like bowser is because he's paper- king olly hates all paper folk, but he hates toads the most
1:11:54 Well the french translation of the game actually justifies it more, because here, his name isn't Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 12th, it is *Côme Raoul Aimé Yves Oscar Nicolas Siméon de Couleur the 12th* (also fun fact: when you take the initials of his 7 first names as well as his last name, you get "Crayons de Couleur" which means Colored Pencil) also his french name is "Pencils Box"
An early Christmas gift that I knew I would enjoy, even if it was a year in the making. Commentary still feels like it was before and even though I only slightly played Sticker and Color while having not played Origami, still felt great to relive or hear the in-depth details that I may agree or disagree with.
For my favorites, here's mine: -Bowser: Bowser can play multiple different roles and still be fun. He can be the threatening main villain, the side villain where anything that can go wrong for him does go wrong, Mario's bitter rival, or even a frenemy or an ally. He is given a personality in all games, except for Sticker Star and Color Splash, where he gets taken over by an evil entity related to the game's gimmick. He's even silent in Sticker Star, for crying out loud! -Vivian: Yes, I know, she's the abused underling who inevitably betrays the bad guys, but I love that trope to death, and Viv is such a kind shadow witch, even when she was on the baddies' side. I even had her finish off Beldam. She aligns herself with Mario because even with the pretext of them being former enemies, Mario is better on his worst days than Beldam is on her best days. -Beldam: I loathe Beldam, and that's because she was meant to be hated. She's willing to screw a mission up, just for pretext for her treatment of Vivian, and I can imagine that Mario despises her, as he would never treat Luigi as poorly as Beldam treats her sisters. -Lord Crump: He's an idiot, but he's our idiot. Every moment with him is hilarious. -Doopliss: He's so funny. Even though he's easy to take out. -Grubba: Chapter 3 stood out for me on TTYD (I'm getting my shit wrecked by Prince Mush), and one aspect of that would be how it handles its mystery arc. You keep guessing who the culprit could be, with Rawk Hawk's willingness to do anything to win and Jolene's habit of appearing and disappearing both making them suspects, while keeping the heat off Grubba. And I like how they quickly reveal that it's Grubba just before his boss battle, where it's revealed Rawk Hawk's clueless about the Crystal Star and the threatening emails, and then we overhear Grubba talking about how he knows Jolene and Mario are onto him. And Grubba works because he doesn't want to take over the world, he's effectively a serial killer driven by his fear of becoming frail in his old age. He does love the sport, he's just someone who's willing to do anything to relive his glory days, and that's what makes him scary, he's very personal to Jolene, who worked for him in hopes of exposing him, as she knew he had something to do with her brother, Prince Mush's disappearance. -Hooktail: Our first chapter boss, and she's not only connected to the larger story, but also, she serves as a personal antagonist to Koops, motivating him to find his courage, to avenge his father. I had to have Koops deliver the finishing blow on her. -Count Bleck: He's a tragic villain done right. It's hard not to feel for him, even when he wishes to destroy everything and everyone, expecting to perish alongside the Paper Mario multiverse. He's also personal for Tippi, who turns out to be his long-lost lover. -Dimentio: He's endlessly charismatic and vile in an incredibly entertaining way. -King Olly: He's based on an taboo, that writing on origami makes it impure. He's personal with the heroes, with Olivia being his younger sister, who he brought to life with his creator's techniques, but she lacks his cruelty, due to being pure origami. And his battle is very fun, with him folding himself into increasingly dangerous forms, with Olivia's own origami powers as the only way to counteract him. -Shadow Queen: Her boss battle was fun and brutal, and an ancient, apocalyptic demon is something that Mario only faces once in a blue moon.
Y’know, I love the Koopalings, I think they’re really fun characters and I love that Color Splash gave them their own theme, but none of them ever play a role in the story. Aside from Lemmy, they all only show up right before you fight them and that’s it. Honestly, I think Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey handles the Koopalings (as well as Bowser it, and Kamek) the best, as that game goes most into their individual personalities and characters and shows actual development.
As one of the very, very few people who played the entirety of Jr. Journey, including the post-game, the only characters mentioned that I don’t think are all that great are Larry and Lemmy, simply because they aren’t really part of the plot that much by contrast to all the other Koopalings and the rest of Bowser’s inner circle. Jr. himself and Kamek are great, though. It’s probably Jr.’s best video game appearance of all.
I'd honestly put Beldam lower if only because she gets a good ending. She should not be redeemed at all. If villains are going to be played straight, then they should NOT be given any sort of good/satisfying ending in the slightest. Macho Grubba and especially Dimentio should've outranked her in that sense. At least Count Bleck is aware of his actions and is willing to atone for them, compared to Beldam where it just... happens out the blue (though you can argue that might be on Vivian for forgiving Beldam too easily) which is why I think he should've been higher.
My stance on it is there is more than enough room for doubt to believe she isn't redeemed, comparable to Mimi. It's still way less than ideal because she's still a karma houdini who doesn't suffer any repercussions for her actions, but I wouldn't rank her #1 if I thought it was a legitimate redemption.
Hey, speaking of Paper Mario how do you feel about the TTYD remake! Sure, plenty of diehard Paper Mario fans are excited for it, but I've seen a lot of people online surprisingly complaining about! The main criticism being that it's a remake and Nintendo is seeming to announce a ton of those recently. this year alone 4/6 first party games that were announced for this year are remakes/remasters Not helping with the fact is that we already got a remake of the original Super Mario RPG not even a year ago at the time of this comment, and that there are rumored FE4, Kid Icarus Uprising, & Mario & Luigi remakes/remasters in the works! I want to know how you feel about this backlash since you seem to be one of the diehard fans.
Sticker star bowser isn’t mind-controlled by this game’s shiny collectible of the week, that’s color splash bowser, there’s nothing said or implied that suggests it, so guess what? All that stupidity and bs, he did it all of his own volition
I am not entirely positive, but I assumed there was brainwashing from the royal stickers because of the dialogue with Megasparkle Goomba, and the otherwise overly nice Mr. Blizzard character attacking you.
I clicked this thinking it was only the final bosses. I didn't know this was 5 hours. Edit: Time to rank up Atomic Boo for his battle theme in the remake.
I think the reason kamek Didn’t age through the series is because he used magic to stay at his age in yoshi’s island, the dude can predict the future in the same game and control time in super Mario party so I wouldn’t say it’s a streaky to say he has anti aging magic (and I bet kammy doesn’t have that considering how weak she is)
I had a feeling someone would timestamp all the entries, with the names and all. Beldam’s definitely a surprise pick, but I think it’s pretty justified. TTYD’s remake even removed the translation barrier!
Here’s a fun idea for how to make Scissors more interesting design wise. Scissors have an aerodynamic shape, so what if it was someone riding a pair of scissors, and you beat him by turning the scissors back on him with the 10,000 Fold Arms?
Ok watching more of the vid, the stapler probably has THE MOST story relevance of the los, as hes the one responsible for preventing the origami soldiers from returning to normal
Ok, continuing to watch, I think count bleck wasn't doing the whole "destroy everything cause my love is dead" but moreso, in his grief he looked to the dark prognostacis, and resigned his free will, this can kinda be seen with how he talks in the third person for most of the game, usually ending scentences with "Says count bleck" but when he talks outside of the prophecy, out of script, he doesn't say that, instead he refers to himself with I and such.
So this is why you disappeared for a year! Very nice countdown and analysis. I personally HATE when the motivation to destroy the world is the loss of a loved one. Most writers seem to forget that you need some other major ingredient for personal loss to lead to wanting to end the world, like demonic influence if not outright possession while the person was in despair. Modern writers just say they are mad with grief and use that as an excuse for everything. Great list! Personally i would nock Beldam down 2-3 spots just for the ending though.
It is a good list, even if Count Bleck may not be up to your tastes (which is understandable why he shouldn't be redeemed if his actions are on such a large scale), and the overinflated score for characterization for Beldam, with the flaws you stated that combats a realistic and compelling villain. Even then, I do think there is room to lower her score and still be number 1.
I'm pretty sure it's "Pete-Ee" and not Petty. Petey is a nickname for Pete, and unlike Richard/Dick, it retains the pronunciation of Pete rather then changing it.
In defence of Doopliss not killing the parrot, a lot of mythology around the whole concept of using names as catalysts for spells REQUIRES at least one person besides yourself to actually know your name. Parrots are quite obviously not from around twilight town, and we can assume that it has been fairly well taken care of. Hell, it's even fairly well guarded when you consider the only ways of getting to it are either a well infested by hostile buzzies with a nearly impassable moving grate or a locked door. It also seems that the parrot is somewhat in on the whole scheme, as it refers to its own actions as 'guarding' the p, as well as it not outright asking for Mario to free it/defeat Doopliss. Either that, or there is some other sort of magic that Doopliss needs someone else to know his name for, such as the pig spell. I know in Egyptian mythology that you specifically had to hear someone's true name either from them, or someone that they had in turn trusted their name to, and that there was some sort of magical 'significance' to it, so you could potentially know their true name, but unless it was shared to you with that 'significance' then it would hold no power (you could look at the p being locked up as the equivalent to that). Yeah, all in all if it hadn't have been for Mario teaming up with Vivian he stood literally 0 chance of getting his name and body back until Doopliss eventually ditched it.
It’s a bit of a disservice to critique King Crocus for not negotiating with the Cragnons or taking other rational steps WHILE SHOWING dialogue on screen of the game explaining that the pollution drove him bonkers. Amazing video overall though, this just leapt out as an oversight! The pollution thing really could have been foreshadowed, like, AT ALL and it would have worked better than it had as a kind of last second addition to the chapter.
Thanks so much for watching! Yeah, I mostly just dislike Croacus himself being so aggressive and hostile. We don't see Croacus himself be diplomatic really, we just have to take the word of his minions for it. Show, don't tell.
Hard agree I really don't think Count Bleck works as a sympathetic villain. People hype him up like he's super deep but he's like the weakest type of sympathetic villain.
40:58 in Paper Jam it was established, that the main line Mario universe are a different one than the Paper Mario universe. So it's very possible, that this version of Ludwing never met/fight Mario before.
None of the events of Mario 3/World, NSMB are directly implied to have happened in the past within Color Splash, but…Mario Kart 8 is, and Ludwig was in that game.
That was my point. This Ludwig in CS is a different one than that of SMB3/SMW and the NSMB Series. Only in CS he implied, that he never met Mario before, which could be plausible.
22:08 well I mean… in Jr.’s defense, this *IS* business as usual. Bowser has got some super powerful item, and is telling his minions to cause havoc around the world to impede Mario’s progress in saving Peach after kidnapping Princess Peach. Then once Mario did reach Bowser, it’s revealed he was sitting in a castle for most of the game just waiting for him. This isn’t really out of the ordinary for Bowser to do, so I always saw the idea that Bowser Jr. didn’t see anything wrong as a way to show that the Crown didn’t really change Bowser that much attitude wise. I mean sure we’d probably be able to tell if he actually SPOKE, aka take Color Splash as an example, not only did he speak but he did things that Bowser wouldn’t, like take all the color from peach’s body making her a lifeless piece of paper in a frame, which arguably makes his minions even DUMBER in CS for not questioning him more. As he is in SS though? Say he was acting like a more powerful Bowser and I probably wouldn’t blame you. That may just be showing how bad the writing is though. (Personal bookmark 2:48:16 )
I don't know if you've made it that far in the video yet, but your comment if anything is making me think I was being too generous to Color Splash Bowser, I forgot that he drained Peach of color which is pretty wildly out of character. Bowser not speaking is the main thing that is weird for Kamek/Bowser Jr in Sticker Star. Outside of the fact he doesn't speak and is supposed to be mindless and possessed, he does just basically act how he would in a generic NSMB title, so you're not wrong!
@@VillainousWarlordWell, CS Bowser isn't even Bowser himself though, the villain is more like.. the Black Paint that possessed him. Bowser most definitely would not do this himself
Also I dont think Bowser is brainwashed in Sticker Star, there isnt anything to imply hes mindcontroled like there is in color splash, I think hes acting out of his free will in that game. Also I dont think the whole Wendy thing with Bowser is intentional. Also, Stapler DOES have story relavence, hes the reason Bowsers minions turned into Origami King in the first place.
"The arguments between the ones who like the original titles and the ones who like the newer titles" I legit don't think I've evr heard anyone like the new titles. Like, I'm not that big a fan of the first paper mario trilogy, but even someone who's neutral to it, I played sticker star for a few couple of hours at best and held a funeral for the series.
Origami King has a lot, and I mean a LOT of fans. It does resemble the classic trilogy the most out of the Tanabe trilogy, but it falls into similar pitfalls as the previous two.
In the original, Mush is only seen the single time when he pops out of the machine at the end of the chapter and vanishes from existence afterwards. We didn't have much proof of him being strong other than him having fans. Video is made pre remake.
Genuine question: what is he missing? Because, like a few others have mentioned, I really don't see how he's anything more than a grand scale school shooter who the game places way too much sympathy into
Hey I just thought of something neat, Sniffit or Whiffit may still be a logical name, because you breath with your nose, so if they pop you'll bubble, you will whiff water
Is it really “whiffing” in the water when it’s not a gas and therefore can’t be “whiffed” or breathed in? I know that’s the point, because you won’t have air and you’ll drown, but…it’s a lot of hoops to jump through.
In german they have too. Yet they are based on italian names for vegetables and Fruits. Asparago = Green Citronello = Yellow Melanzano = Black Pomodoro = Red
I think your Bleck ranking is a bit uncharitable, personally. Count Bleck is implied to have been driven to nihilism over a period of time given that he has a crew that met him and swore loyalty at different points and for different reasons, and nastasia even acknowledges that he can ‘change his mind’ which seems to imply that he wasn’t completely gung-ho about universe erasure during his time with them. I believe he also said he searched for timpani for quite some time before becoming jaded. He was willing to complete his marriage to Tippi despite her Pixl status if you wanted proof his love wasn’t based on something arbitrary. Your criticism of him not just settling for Nastasia’s affection is a little odd to me too, to be honest. I’m not saying it’s a logical conclusion to resort to world erasure, but it’s a bit unfair to say that him being angry about his fiancée is all that his motivation is. The fact he has no purpose in life and has the Dark Prognosticus to guide him (a book of prophecy that’s older than anyone and foretells tragedy) and him essentially using it to justify his own pain by treating it as a fact of life (basically enabling his own depression) is also an angle you don’t tackle, but I think that book could potentially add something to his character. I also think he’s a very thematically appropriate villain for Super Paper Mario specifically given that the game’s story is about love and he’s essentially become the cold hearted villain because he couldn’t move on from his grief and closed himself off from any form of love around him, making it more ironic that his lackeys genuinely want the best for him. I don’t blame you for not liking his core motivation being grief over a single person and I still like the vid a lot, but I’m just giving a ramble on what I think are some strengths with the guy.
Thank you for putting Olly so low. Genuinely the worst villain in the Paper Mario series. Why anyone would make their entire channel revolve around him is beyond me, but lame character is lame.
Good list, though I feel the lack of prime enough focus on how much of a main villain she was + the ending of TTYD should keep Beldam from the #1 spot, I feel she's carried in here a lot by the narrative side on how much of a bad person she is but that narrative really sinks down in the moment you'd want it to reach its highest peak which kind of ruins it compared to some of the other more consistent villains on the list.
Tower Power Pokey is the best villain in the series and I don't know why you rated him so low. His boss battle is very difficult and he has much more HP than any of the characters from thousand year door or super paper mario. He also resembles the design from the characters in the real games and that makes him more better. He also be
Good video! Certainly not the picks I would have made but nothing wrong with that at all. Did you intend this as more subjective or objective? (or do you believe that this is ultimately ONLY able to be subjective?) Just curious, either way I still like your list and the video a lot!
Whacka doesn’t seem all that malicious when you fight it, and it’s perfectly justified to attack Mario in response after the abuse Mario gave it. Whacka claims it’s boss fight is just “playing”, after all. For all intents and purposes, Mario and company are the ones in the wrong.
Yeah, seeing Mario & Luigi villains ranked would be cool too. I mean, like, we all know what number one is, but still.
This video deserves to blow up! There so much effort put into it.
Btw Dimentio = GOAT of Nintendo villains
As a pm fan, I appreciate not only how inclusive and in detail this list is, but how it ranks the villains instead of just the boss battles. I cannot imagine the amount of work you put into this, your dedication is outstanding.

Honestly Iggy calling Mario a pretty boy is pretty funny and fits his absolutely unhinged nature
I could be remembering wrong, but doesn’t another character ALSO call him a pretty boy in Color Splash? I feel like there were two instances of it
@@nintendojedi899 I think a random Goomba or something
Even the guys want Mario.
This is probably the most accurate listing I've ever heard about any Paper Mario villains. The criteria worked extremely well too. If you do plan to work on the Mario and Luigi series, then I guarantee your fans would enjoy it. The criteria could be somewhat similar as well. Hope to see your channel grow more considering how underrated you are!
awesome Video, I've been it the past days to fall asleep to. Very detailed I really enjoyed watching it :)
Tanabe should have been the highest ranked villain on this list
Back then, it was funny how Rawk Hawk got his ass beat by a Toad, but now that we can fight that Toad, hot damn, can we blame him?
Looks like I have found my arch nemesis.
“Remember Mario and Luigi? Yeah, that series outright *died* due to poor sales of it’s remake.”
Or so we thought.
Good list, I think Count Bleck is a bit low though
I feel like the flaw of his character is his fatalism and defeatist attitude, adamantly believing that he can't stop the prophecy, I get the impression that he wanted the heroes to destroy him and stop his plan, and you can see that after his boss fight when he completely loses the will to continue it.
Would the entire Shroob faction be ranked as one entry? Or just the Princess and/or the Elder Princess?
Personally I’m a fan of the shroobs too
Dude I love your commentary on all the bosses!
Original Paper Mario trilogy fans are so annoying. Those games don’t deserve as much love and support as they get.

5 hours.. I'll have to listen to this while I make my christmas special
Great video. Enjoy watching it.
very worth the wait, you r a joy to watch
I'm pretty sure Kamek/Ludwig saying it's his first time facing Mario is because of them being their paper versions, Paper Jam confirmed they are different universes after all (plus Kamek first appearance in the paper games was in SS, due to Kammy being in the older games)
"tanabe triology" my brother in christ, tanabe was the producer since super paper mario
it's so weird how paper mario fans try to put everything they don't like in the games as tanabe's fault, like he's the only person designing the entire game. hell, he's not even the director, he's just the producer, it just feels like people want a scapegoat to put all the blame and forget that making games is a colective effort.
also, the reason olly doesn't like bowser is because he's paper- king olly hates all paper folk, but he hates toads the most
The problems of the new games are definitely a more corporate initiative, though Tanabe didn't try very hard to resist the mandates.
1:11:54 Well the french translation of the game actually justifies it more, because here, his name isn't Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 12th, it is *Côme Raoul Aimé Yves Oscar Nicolas Siméon de Couleur the 12th* (also fun fact: when you take the initials of his 7 first names as well as his last name, you get "Crayons de Couleur" which means Colored Pencil)
also his french name is "Pencils Box"
also if you wonder what that kind of name in English would have been, my guess is: Claude Oscar Louis Olivier Raymond Edouard Didier Pencils the 12th
This is definitely a better name. Not just a proper name, but a silly pun.
An early Christmas gift that I knew I would enjoy, even if it was a year in the making. Commentary still feels like it was before and even though I only slightly played Sticker and Color while having not played Origami, still felt great to relive or hear the in-depth details that I may agree or disagree with.
Great job as always Warlord
For my favorites, here's mine:
-Bowser: Bowser can play multiple different roles and still be fun.
Beldam is an underrated antagonist.
I think the reason kamek
Didn’t age through the series is because he used magic to stay at his age in yoshi’s island, the dude can predict the future in the same game and control time in super Mario party so I wouldn’t say it’s a streaky to say he has anti aging magic (and I bet kammy doesn’t have that considering how weak she is)

“What’s a finale without a Bowser appearance! A cruddy finale, that’s what!”
Paper should be the art-style NOT the entire plot. I sincerely hope nintendo understands that after the TTYD remake
But even then, if it's going to be about paper, it still would need to be written like the old games, with deep papery lore.

“Dude, you have to stop making such short videos. I mean, only 6 hours?!”
Amazing video, joke aside
great video man. we should lock tanabe in a cage and make him do little dances
Here’s a fun idea for how to make Scissors more interesting design wise. Scissors have an aerodynamic shape, so what if it was someone riding a pair of scissors, and you beat him by turning the scissors back on him with the 10,000 Fold Arms?
Some things about tape, the blade is supposed to be brass knuckles and his tape holder is a car!
I feel like with Beldam's role being comparable to Dimentio as the hidden card-playing main antagonist...
Yeah.
Return of the king also would you ever do a dmc villains ranked it would kinda a perfect fit for this type of stuff
Dimentio's in the Top 3? That's based.
I'm pretty sure it's "Pete-Ee" and not Petty. Petey is a nickname for Pete, and unlike Richard/Dick, it retains the pronunciation of Pete rather then changing it.
Oh boy, 6 hours of Warlord.
The stapler is keeping Bowser folded into a wet sign, and the Folded Soldiers under Olly's control.
i commend the fact that u are treating all of them fairly despite your preferences

i actually love this game and i forgot this character even existed
I would rank Fracktail 8/10 as not a villain, but as a character.
@@maurycyoseka1057Well, Fracktail isn’t a villain at all. He just fights Mario out of reluctance, because he’s brainwashed. He can’t qualify.
Is your favourite word ‘generically’?
Such a favorite word is certainly not generic in of itself.
Sure as hell seems like it but i kinda like it
In defence of Doopliss not killing the parrot, a lot of mythology around the whole concept of using names as catalysts for spells REQUIRES at least one person besides yourself to actually know your name.
Yeah, all in all if it hadn't have been for Mario teaming up with Vivian he stood literally 0 chance of getting his name and body back until Doopliss eventually ditched it.
counter arguement: doopliss knows his own name
Top 10 anime comebacks.
paper mario series and the non paper mario characters are actually different from eachother since paperjam says so
It’s a bit of a disservice to critique King Crocus for not negotiating with the Cragnons or taking other rational steps WHILE SHOWING dialogue on screen of the game explaining that the pollution drove him bonkers.
Good to see you bro
39:33 you can also just knock em back with a racoon suit and, HE WILL JUST STRAIGHT UP DIVE IN THE WATER
Someone should make a ranking of every villain from Mario franchise, including the spin-offs.
With this guy’s level of detail and dedication, it might end up being longer than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.
@@BlusterTheBenevolent Well, their could always be the main, secondary, major and supporting villains only.
It does resemble the classic trilogy the most out of the Tanabe trilogy, but it falls into similar pitfalls as the previous two.
the count bleck placement is true actually.... I’ve been saying he has the depth of a school shooter if you think about it.....
are you the person that made that gif
A Toad? Have you fought Prince Mush? Also, Rawk Hawk wasn't absorbed because he's too dumb to pose a threat to Grubba's plans.
In the original, Mush is only seen the single time when he pops out of the machine at the end of the chapter and vanishes from existence afterwards. We didn't have much proof of him being strong other than him having fans. Video is made pre remake.
@@VillainousWarlord Yeah, I saw that it was from before the remake.
You entirely missed the point on Count Bleck. Still, enjoyable video. Well done.
Genuine question: what is he missing? Because, like a few others have mentioned, I really don't see how he's anything more than a grand scale school shooter who the game places way too much sympathy into
God I want to watch this a 6 hour paper Mario video, BUT ITS 6 HOURS AND I HAVE WORK SOON
Personally i would have put Dimentio at #1 or atleast above Grubba tbh but the list is peak
I know that’s the point, because you won’t have air and you’ll drown, but…it’s a lot of hoops to jump through.
i thought you gave up on this channel but damn am i glad i was wrong
To be fair paper mario is a different universe than mainline mario
The fact that bowser jr is so loyal to bowser is either poor writing or bowser is actually a really good dad, atleast better then most
Here come....the KOOPA BROS!!! I've heard the KOOPA BROS DO have actual names in the Japanese version. They supposedly just didn't translate them.
In german they have too.
Yet they are based on italian names for vegetables and Fruits.
Asparago = Green
Citronello = Yellow
Melanzano = Black
Pomodoro = Red
I'm glad I'm not the only one who found it weird that somebody based a youtube channel around him, lol.
Which UA-camr did that?
@@somewackoonyoutube2449 Some guy called DogsEatingDogs6, if it's the guy he's talking about.
What is so wrong with Olly, he is not that bad.😭😭
@@Stitches000He literally explains it in the video. Oh, Olly’s “sympathetic?” Sure, is that why he drops a boulder on Olivia?
He also be
I don't understand if that's a joke or not

Happy TTYD Remake, everyone! Beldam is now officially a bigot in the English version!
Hey you’re back!
I'm sure Mai would agree with you on 57: she declared Victory is Boring.
I had to triple check the video length 😂😂😅😅
Good video! Certainly not the picks I would have made but nothing wrong with that at all. Did you intend this as more subjective or objective? (or do you believe that this is ultimately ONLY able to be subjective?) Just curious, either way I still like your list and the video a lot!
where would whacka go
Whacka doesn’t seem all that malicious when you fight it, and it’s perfectly justified to attack Mario in response after the abuse Mario gave it.
Whacka claims it’s boss fight is just “playing”, after all. For all intents and purposes, Mario and company are the ones in the wrong.
Nowhere. He's just a silly guy, just very strong.
Beldam speech bubble
I saw that #1 comeing and #3
I was surprised that you ranked count Bleck so low it is sort of a good/bad violent but I’d put him above huff puff
1:02:40 heh, Stickling out.
3:15:39 That's literally the first thing his tattle states.
Also Dimentio should have been #1 and Grubba has no business being so high at all.
