I used to talk to Jimmy whilst out walking dogs, maybe around 2014, a true gentleman. I never mentioned the game, I think he thought I had no idea who he was. He had a Labrador, I had two Staffords,, we just used to talk dogs and general stuff. He loved dogs and helped local rescue centres.

Jimmy Greaves is a forgotten legend. A player as technically brilliant as any South American, Italian, Spanish etc. Geoff Hurst said that he was so in awe of Jimmy Greaves when he first got into the England squad, he couldn’t believe he was training with Jimmy never mind playing in the same team. England’s greatest goal scorer. Truly world class. Greaves was incredibly unfortunate to be injured during 1966 when at his peak.
There really should be something done to remind and educate people today about this legend of the game.

You could argue that if Jim had not been injured England would not have become World Champions. The inclusion of Mr Hurst and his goals put pay to Jim’s involvement in that tournament. But for all that, even as West Ham supporter, l think Jim was a more natural goalscorer than Hurst.

And it really makes me laugh when they talk about today's so called 'Modern game'
Sure today's players have all ..,so all of these benefits, which will naturally produce better Athletes.
But back in the day playing on fields more suited to a Farmer and his animals!,a rock hard leather ball,(and boots and many players not using shin guards)Terminator style tackling, and perhaps the most salient point, everyone (where the game was popular)wanted to be a footballer(it was the working mans dream)so the competition was immense, and if u were good,u were something special..

Bought this on VHS as a kid in the early 90s. Brilliant interview and Jimmy was a very articulate and intelligent man. Genuine world class striker. Probably the greatest goalscorer that England has ever produced. Football aside though, they touched on his alcoholism and his recovery. Back then people were quite reticent and few understood these problems and how they came about to sportsmen. Credit to Jimmy for speaking so openly and honestly about it and also being very humble. He was a top bloke. Credit to his wife and family too in his recovery. Sadly not all wives or people are willing to help a husband or family member. It takes great strength and thanks to the efforts of both parties, Jimmy got himself back together and live a good life❤

So sad to see him so Ill nowadays he was always so full of life and seemed so cheerful I think he would love to see Harry kane break his tottenham goal scoring record like Jimmy he's a local lad done good playing for the same team he graced back in the 60s wish spurs would do a special game for him to thank him for the great service and goals we remember so fondly GET WELL SOON JIMMY

When the word "Great" is used, Jimmy Greaves definitely comes into the equation. He was an exceptional finisher, and if ever a more better natural goalscorer as ever existed in the history of the game I have yet to have heard of them. Greaves was a master of putting the ball in the net.........Legend

Last player to score 40 top division league goals in a season (during his Chelsea days). Haaland might equal or surpass that this season.

Proper footballing legend. People say that with the rules today, defenders not having as much free range with tackling that he'd get 60 goals a season nowadays. But I look back at the state of the pitches then when he was scoring 30/40 goals a season regularly and look at the pristine pitches today and agree that he'd score a hatful. Absolute LEGEND

I remember greaves at Chelsey in 1959.
I come along with my english father, he was a football trainer in Tonbridge, lived in Southborough.
Then it was my favoriete time.
I was 16 years and I came from Holland.

I wish I had seen him play...a genius and, from what I know, a lovely lovely man. I was privileged to see him on 'Saint and Greavesie and always enjoyed watching the double act. As a Scot I loved Saint but for me it was Greavsie's humour that made the show. I recall one line he used ; ' yeah Saint, I was deadly from all of 6 inches..'..... such self-deprecating humour and all the better because it was so patently untrue...he was a deadly striker full stop. Lineker reminds me of him a little. Btw a wryly humorous aside: there is a lovely interlude in 'Taggart', the Scottish long-running detective series where Jim Taggart says to McVitie ( the biscuit, lol ) "I remember it well sir, it was the day England beat Scotland 9-3". I didn't know you were a rugby man, Jim.", McVitie saysTaggart replies " It wasn't rugby sir, it was soccer ".....

I will make you envious as I saw him make his debut for Chelsea at Spurs where he scored in a One All draw, it was obvious he would have a good career but it was much better than most.

I didn't know until I saw this how upset the great Jimmy was with Spurs when they let him go, and I didn't know either that Cloughie wanted him. How wonderful that would have been, plenty more goals and almost certainly a Championship medal or even 2, if Derby could win it without Jim in 1972 they'd have won it by far more with him, and very probably in 71 or 73 too,

That is so true and with Dave Mackay as well...............I am a big Spurs fan and I lived in Derby in those days..................Brian Clough and Peter Taylor set that town on fire................Jimmy Greaves should have gone to Derby County and seen out his days....................Clough would have got what he wanted out of Jimmy as he did with Dave Mackay...................COYS
