I haven't pug tanked underrot yet, but I did pug tank freehold last night for an almost full pug, and it really amazed me how little awareness people have. We ended up killing twice as much trash as we needed to because so many people would butt pull packs because they lack any situational awareness. Honestly, it makes me feel like an amazing tank though, because I can see it coming, grab the extra packs, and survive.... So I suppose that's the silver lining on that one.
Yeah, isn't it amazing. I've tanked bout 40 odd dungeons and the unnecessary trash pulls are insane. The worst thing is they start doing damage while i'm still rounding up mobs and so you have enemies all over the place.
If you think freehold is bad, try pugging motherlode. You will most likely pull the whole dungeon and be forced to take all the mines because who cares about focus fire eh.
lol, I was running tol dagor and at some point during Howlis our ww monk pulled something, somewhere else in the dungeon. We couldn't figure out why he was stuck in combat, but decided to just move on, because whatever it was, it wasn't doing damage to them... Then we rounded the stairs after Howlis, and every trash mobon every floor above Howlis comes streaming through the doorway...
As always enjoy watching you run dungeons. I haven't learned all the dungeons yet and you do such a good job explaining things so i know what to look for when I enter. Easier to learn things when you can see it happen rather then just reading a dungeon journal.
I'm a prot pally and my first attempt at siege of Bora I had 3 dps under 3k damage and when we wiped on the last boss 15 times they said I was elitist when I said they didn't have the damage to finish the run
Robert Metz I know the pain. Prot pally here and I was doing more dmg on final boss in atal than our mage was. Asked them if there was anything I could do to help out their dmg, and was raged at. Next mythic different mage was doing triple my dps.
Imagine my happiness when I was top DPS as a Feral, but then it all went to shit when I saw fuckers being 30 ilvl below me and doing my dps, A FERAL MADE IT TO THE BENCH! Not even at ilvl 346 I can keep with my friends that are 335-340, lmfao.
I'm a little surprised you didn't use some of the free GCDs on the final boss to heroic throw the spores. It resets Victory Rush every cast at that point and is a little more engaging of a fight and limits the rot on the ground. Also, it's an insane amount of self-healing as a prot warrior. I imagine it will be helpful with M+ since the healer can essentially ignore the tank at that point.
Showcasing tanking M0s at 343 kind of misses the argument, as at that point you've already out geared it. Get a 325 heroic level geared prot warrior with a level 15 necklace, and that would be a better measure of protection warrior viability in appropriate content. You already mentioned you didn't want to take your dps because they're over geared, and part of the reason you chose prot warrior was due to the stigma they face. That's my opinion, though.
But Prot warrior in Heroic content and up to around +5 is perfectly viable. Going further than that is the issue and where we really are weak compared to other tanks like Bestknights
Not sure if you go into theorycrafting in the comments, but how would you rate going Booming Voice over Devastator in your build? Comes with built in rage generation and boosts the damage/threat you're outputting from the Thunderclap?
Even though I've been tanking since TBC, there's still stuff in here that although I'm aware of, think is really useful to know, like even a veteran like myself can use many of these tips and tricks to get better at the game and learn more useful stuff. And even more so if you're new to tanking, videos like these are amazing to figure out tanking patterns.
Using a weak aura to see the cooldowns on interupt is very very useful, even if you are with guildgroup. And I have been pugging a few mythics but most I have done with a guild group. The most scary mythic I was in was labeled "340 no wipes". Wiped three times on the totem boss in Atal'dazar because dps followed each other. Me as a rogue moved to the one inside the room. Easy for me to go there, without aggroing the boss. Don't remember the other dps but they started attacking the same totem.. If we couldn't make it on the first attempt the healer had problem with mana after the second attempt so we decided that if we failed first it was a wipe. Three attempts, marking on players head and world markers was needed to keep some people from moving to another totem. Also have a story from today while leveling my dark iron. Three times the tank decided not to save a dps life because of ninjapull. Three different tanks, that is. First time I went in to help the ninja, and the tank shamed me because "you could have let him die aswell".. Like I know you are a jerk that say 'if you pull you tank it' without even saying a single word in chat before that happened.
I run booming voice makes the spec more engaging. Really enjoyed this video looking forward to the others. It will really help people get the correct idea for mythic Plus.
My band occasionally plays with a fiddler who, during sets of fast-paced reels, will constantly attempt to converse with the rest of us about mundane topics such as where we went for dinner and what we ate. He never misses a note while the rest of us struggle to listen and play. If we attempt to politely answer the guy we just end up drooling, screwing up the tune, or both. Preach is the gamer equivalent of that fiddler.
I found it very beneficial to tank this boss in a big circle around the room, the spores will only spawn from old puddles that are far away and won't hurt people.
The diffrence from going to guild groups to pugging is terrifying. 10K dps difference on AoE packs. No interrupts. 4K hps from holy priests. I just dont get it man.
@@BogzySama Give me a break. All those examples can be applied to an Atal'dazar run on my dk. I was 327, 325 was the req. The healer was specifically my example, and also the grp leader. Got told off "tank pls youre not a god" after they decided to get 2 packs with fear-odactyls, you know the ones. Feared me into the mid with trikes.
I haven't raided since Cata, and haven't done a lot more than level toons since then. Maybe things have changed, but, a part of the tank's job is also assessing the healer and their mana. It used to be not unusual at all to establish a good pace that the healer can handle and dps decide they want to go faster. If the healer is bored, you're going too slow. If the dps is bored, but the healer is in their confort zone, then the dps can deal or leave.
Preach can you make a video about how important it is to use your interrupts, the amount of dungeons ive done where I am the only one using interrupts (as a resto shammy) is beyond a joke. You need to interrupt so I dont have to be haling 100% of the fights.
In case you are curious, you didn't get a ninja pull at the end with the added faceless coming. It's the one cc'ing the Titan guy that you didn't do on the way.
Hey Preach, to avoid getting killed by the small ticks in underrot you just have to Heroic Leap, thunder clap and kite, maybe get a shockwave in. What kills you is the stacking bleed they give you which hurts a tonne
Where he pulled the worm at that timestamp, you (before getting to where you'd pull that worm) go left immediately and hug the left-hand wall on the raised platform you have to go up. You can skip the worm & tormentor dude, the bone pack on the raised platform, and the worm/fearbro on the other side of the platform. Never try it with pugs.
I'm having the best time on prot warrior right now only 342 but Ive been sticking to my best secondaries and azerite traits, and got a couple blockades decks from a guild mate. Prot paladin has been a PAIN. Haven't tried my guardian druid yet. I noticed you are playing Devastator, I really liked that build in legion but im using Booming Voice at the moment.
Thot Hunter I’m the exact opposite. Prot Warrior broke my brain. I was fumbling pulls left and right so I switched to my pally and boom. Found my groove. Only 339 on him but the dps and survivability is crazy.
I'm waiting for a good one handed weapon and shield to drop before I start trying out prot warrior, but I really enjoyed it in Legion. Definitely only going to take Devestator though, makes the spec just play much better imo.
Booming voice is good. I tried both but what Preach said definitely has merits. Global cooldown makes pressing devastate potentially devastating. You are always on your toe between revenge proc and ignore pain. It’s better to give it a slower pace. Booming voice does makes it feels like WoD Warrior, just a lot slower and weaker, it also pairs up nicely with deafening crash. Going in with avatar, charge, block, voice, ignore/revenge and spam clap for almost every pack is fun but for day-to-day ease of tanking, it’s not worth it.
i found prot pally much better for the dungeons. you can break encounters with your bubble and you can cleanse yourself from debufs which is very usefull like for example in this video when preach soaked the shrooms on a pally you can run arround breaking them with your bubble or you can break them and cleanse the debuf off from yourself. very useful and versatile class and have a better gameplay "flow" in my opinion then the prot warrior

Theres no breaks where he types to people yet sentences are sent back and forth between the two. I cannot think of how n the only thing i can think if it preach actually faked a live recording...
For the most part I will agree on the ninja pulls, but at the same time, sometimes the DPS will pull unless it is constant, and in some cases, the tank is waiting for a reason. I had a not great heals the other day that kept going OOM somehow, and I kept waiting to pull until he had mana, several times, including the first boss, our hunter pulled because "Why we waiting" while the heals was downing mage food. In that case, I completely blame the DPS, especially in the boss case since the heals had put OOM in chat.
I did a couple mythic zeroes despite being scared and the way i approached it was "well if we wipe no biggie its not a race". Even if you die you will down it, it just won't be as smooth as you hoped.
Absolutely love your comments about the tanks keeping the DPS interested. Perfect explanation for it. 100%. "It's not breaktime! We have a dungeon to clear. Let's go." LOVE it.
I did a guild group last week of Waycrest Manor and started pulling for the tank as a dps because he would take a minute plus between pulls as if waiting for confirmation from each person they are ready for the next pull, as well as making terrible pulls with way too many adds.
I probably had the worst dungeon of my life as a tank the other day. As a practice I pull just shy of abusing the healer to death, so the pace was fairly high, but I was still getting ninja pulled on in shrine of storms. Worst part was I was the only player there that knew what an interrupt was (80 compared to the rest of the group's total of 3). I know it wasn't normal to get this kind of group, but it's just so damn painful when it does happen it sticks with you longer.
In a dungeon invorenment the prot warrior makes actually a lot of fun. It is only a pain in the ass in pure single target encounters when the rage generation is low as shit. Hopefully the bosses in raids will hit significant harder so we're not that rage drained
My Prot Warrior is my only character rn you should look into using Iron Fortress + Brace for Impact instead of Brace for Impact X2. It synergizes with Brace for Impact and makes crit a little bit more useful. To be fair I haven't done hardcore testing to see which is truly better, but to me it just seems more interesting lol.
I started talking seriously in bfa and have found that point zeros and low keys are actually fine as long as you take control and being the tank that's easier. It does mean that when people butt pull and are generally bad you either get shit or you pick it up and they generally don't learn. But if the group is to toxic then they are 100 groups looking for a tank so you just move on
As my main is a tank its drives me nuts if I'm on my alt (Demo Warlock) and I'm able to run up to the tank, be standing next to them and able to get a 2 second cast off before they even initiate on the next isolated pack. Kills me
imo shrine of storms is the hardest, or at least pugs have the most trouble understanding the trash. Interrupt the heals, stand in the circle, interrupt unending darkness, everytime i do it nobody does these things
I never see purposeful ninja pulls whilst pugging in mythic+ because I keep a high pace, but a lot of accidental ones in because people do not at all pay attention to their surroundings or have this need to jump around randomly... if anything people complain I go too quickly mostly which can become a problem too I suppose. But yeah the marking thing is something I really need to start doing as a tank so appreciate the tip.
@preach I wish you were on US, Shadow is in a weird spot as you mentioned in previous videos. But with the new aoe talents our value in dungeons have increased so much. with dispels being important we have one and a mass dispel (Awesome for Kings Rest and Underrot) Can't wait to hear your opinions on them in the future especially 8.1
HaHa I do the "you pull it, you tank it". Its always ranged classes that seem to think standing off to the side helps there dps or standing as far as possible. When I see this I just let them bring the adds to me, I don't go to them, or they die.
I got a laugh out of "keep your DPS interested". I do that exact same move - diving ahead to the next pack while they finish the last dude in the current pack - but my thinking is more "I need to build threat." It's definitely accomplishing the other goal too, but I like your way of thinking.
Pulling the next pack before the previous one is dead is annoying because it's annoying. Some specs can benefit from going out of combat in between pulls, other specs have a stricter aoe dps rotation, and if you just keep them in an endless mob barrage, you'll just mess up their coordination, the healer might go out of mana if they don't have time to breathe. The dps meter resetting is obviously not important, but can be refreshing. My point being, pulling like an edgelord is almost always a bad idea, specifically in pugs where some people might just give up because they're too annoyed and cannot handle the pace. Don't do this as a tank, you're making your life more miserable, and you're making other people's lives more miserable, and in the end you'll just end up ruining your game experience because your expectations weren't met. Play a rogue or feral druid in dungeons with a tank that does this. Play an undergeared healer that struggles with mana. See how you'll think about this kind of tanking after that. :)
Try out booming voice, instead of Devastator. It's way more rage on demand, and gives you more damage by extension. Also more on demand rage = better survivablity.
quick question: do you give the dps complementary HJs to keep them entertained too? because it seems like you think tanks are literally party planners.
Stefan Stancuna not great at reading, are you? I'm the tank who makes for clean runs, homie. Sorry you're garbage who thinks the TINY effort things like running ahead to the next pack take is too much work for you
@@cashnelson2306 it's not about that, bruv. I'm also the tank that has clean, fast runs. But the concept of having them entertained and making it my fault for ninja pulling when they don't know what CDs are available or how much mana the healer has is what I'm talking about.
I found all dungeons except Shrine of the storm to be very pug friendly. Shrine of the storm has some very unforgiving bosses. like that second boss, galecaller something and Iron something.. that Iron guy hits the tank for a truck load odf damage if you don't stay away from him during his buff. the last boss in Kings rest is also pretty unforgiving, lots of movement, I can see DK tanks struggle on that one without external movement buffs.
Who else loved the Preach play by play of this dungeon? I sure the hell did!

You didn't mention as prot warrior on the final boss you can just heroic throw the spores to get free victory rushes
I would love to see you do a tanking video like this for all the dungeons. This was probably one of the best "how to tank" videos out there.

But if the group is to toxic then they are 100 groups looking for a tank so you just move on
What is the interrupt tracker called?
aww without the roar in the intro, preach you are such a tease .
As my main is a tank its drives me nuts if I'm on my alt (Demo Warlock) and I'm able to run up to the tank, be standing next to them and able to get a 2 second cast off before they even initiate on the next isolated pack. Kills me
Brauchts du die schultern tho?
imo shrine of storms is the hardest, or at least pugs have the most trouble understanding the trash. Interrupt the heals, stand in the circle, interrupt unending darkness, everytime i do it nobody does these things
You still have the Mana Divining Stone buff Mike - are you hoping to run into some Ancient Mana and go back to do Withered Training in Suramar? xD
Which addon shows the interrupt CD's, anyone?
Not speaking for him but I believe it's a weakaura. I don't remember the exact name but it should come up first if you search wago.io
Ill check it out as soon as I can, thank you Stefan
Its Preach's own WeakAura, he has a link to all of his in the BFA UI video.
Most annoying thing is when I get a tank that wants to sit and wait 30 secs between pulls. I just want to scream PULL.
Anyone know the add on that shows azerite traits in the tooltip?
Azerite Tooltip is the addon.
Oh man, that sucks Mike, being Smash instead of just Preach. How did you get a statue of your character in the first place?
I really enjoyed you explaining why you were doing what you were doing. Thanks for the tips bud.
Hope you do these for all specs
Preachsmash isn't even a bad name. Grats!
HaHa I do the "you pull it, you tank it". Its always ranged classes that seem to think standing off to the side helps there dps or standing as far as possible. When I see this I just let them bring the adds to me, I don't go to them, or they die.
what's the interupt addon?
It's a weakaura. If you go to his BFA UI video he has a link to all his weakauras in the description.
Best thing about this dungeon as a warrior tank is heroic throw on the spores triggers victory rush -_-V
I got a laugh out of "keep your DPS interested". I do that exact same move - diving ahead to the next pack while they finish the last dude in the current pack - but my thinking is more "I need to build threat." It's definitely accomplishing the other goal too, but I like your way of thinking.
A good pace is important but pulling next pack before last pack is finished can be annoying as dps meter doesnt reset.
Oh no, not the dungeon trash dps meter
80% of a dungeon is trash dps, it matters if you give a damn about m+.
Doing the dps matters. What the meter says does not, at all
Pulling the next pack before the previous one is dead is annoying because it's annoying.
Is prot warrior good now?
As an spriest main since 2007, id have loved to see your boy's dmg bc we are in a badddd place lol
Ahhhhhhhhh you're making me wanna make my mag'har a prot warrior
dreamyrobot do it..but go arms :D
I miss this series
The daily preachsmash
Feelsbadman for that statue
Love watching his tanking. Been tanking since the start of bfa and always cool to see how someone else is controlling the group.
Love this tanking content. More please!
10:32 matron cleaves shaman got debuf....ded
quick question: do you give the dps complementary HJs to keep them entertained too? because it seems like you think tanks are literally party planners.
people like you are why i don't pug on any role but tank lmao
@@cashnelson2306 people like you that expect everything to be handed and planned for them are the reason I don't pug.
Stefan Stancuna yeah, my first comment stands lmfao
I've never seen so many weapon drops in one dungeon.
I love how completely wrong preach was about everything here considering prot warr's strength in all of bfa
use heroic throw to kill spores AND its will gives you victory rush proc !
My issue in Kings Rest is usually the first boss. Requires some good DPS to get it down before youre just completely overwhelmed by 30 blobs.
The problem with pugs is that they’re mostly low geared players wanting a 330+ tank or heals to carry them.
