Rush is absolutely known for their lyrics. Their music was often referred to as “thinking man’s rock.”

Anyone who says they're not known for their lyrics doesn't know RUSH. Rush is arguably the best Rock band, ever. All 3 are Virtuoso musicians with unlimited synergy, flawless time changes, and seamless transitions. The lyrics are always intriguing and thought provoking. Ive seen them 17 times in my life. Love them !

Not known for lyrics?? Neil was definitely a poet and prolific writer and published author! Holy crap, how could anyone say they aren't known for their lyrics??
Listen to The Pass if you want more "bad lyrics" out of these guys 😂 Don't think there's any preparing for that song anyone can do before they hear it for the first time.

Whoever said that Rush isn't known for their lyrics don't know Rush! P.S. The lady singing the line "Time stands still" is Amie Mann of the band 'Til Tuesday. They hit it big with "Voices Carry" It's very much worth a listen..

Just to be fair to Aimee Mann, she had a more successful career as a solo artist than she did for the few years she fronted Til Tuesday.
Her music inspired PT Anderson to write his classic, Oscar-nominated film, Magnolia. It was also her original music that drove the soundtrack album, which was certified gold in the USA in 1999.

Aimee Mann of Til Tuesday in the accompanying vocal. Check out the video from back in the day, pure late '80s production, for better or worse... 🙂

Rush is some off the finest and profound lyrics in all of Rock &
Roll… The drummer Neil Peart (R.I.P.) is the primary lyricist. Also this song is written into my will to be played at my funeral

Summer's going fast, nights growing colder
Children growing up, old friends growing older
Freeze this moment a little bit longer
Make each sensation a little bit stronger

    Experience slips away
    The innocence slips away...
    Time Stand Still.

Some fans dislike Rush's 80's keyboard era, but as a child of the 80s' I love it! This song has a beautiful melody, while the music is still complex, as one expects with Rush. Aimee Mann of 'Til Tuesday does a wonderful job with the guest vocal here, and the lyrics speak to a universal theme that anyone can relate to, especially as we get older. On this live recording, Geddy struggles some with the high notes. I recommend watching the super-cheesy music video to this on your own time (though maybe not if you get seasick easily LOL!). Personally, I feel that Geddy's melodic '80s vocals are his best, and you can really hear how well he had developed his voice by the mid-80s. A future reaction I suggest is the instrumental "La Villa Strangiato', Live in Cleveland.

If anyone deserves a University course on their lyrical content, it's The Professor. IMHO, he is one of the greatest story tellers/philosophers of the 20th century. He made you think, reflect, question everything about yourself and the world around you. A true genius at his craft. Thanks for doing this. If you ever want the tears to flow uncontrollably, listen to the US Army version (not a type-o) of this song. I still have a hard time getting through it.

I'm 35. Just lost the love of my life at 33 years old to heart failure. I'd give anything for time to stand still when I was in the hospital with her during her final days. She was so brave... I miss her so much. Rush was our favorite band, and their music means SO much more than it did a couple months ago now, and that's saying a lot, because it meant everything to me even before losing her... I didn't think their music could get more important, but there they go, amazing me once again, even though they've been retired for almost 9 years now. Has it really been that long?? Please... make time stand still.

I love this song. It's definitely a song that just hits first time, it doesn't need multiple listens to warm to it. I'm miles from hearing everything they've done but I think this and Closer To The Heart are my two favourites of the songs I know. I think you'll like that one too, there's an extended live video on here it's Rush - Closer To The Heart (A Show of Hands 1989) as it's a fairly short song you get an extra minute in that video! Great lyrics in this one. I love this line in it, very clever, All those wounds that I can’t get unwound.

RUSH is absolutely one of those bands that you need the Lyrics in front of you when you are getting to know the songs! Us RUSH ARMY would say it’s critical! Neil is outstanding at lyrical imagery and message. He even wrote several books over the years. RUSH is cerebral along with everything else. That’s just one more reason they have such a diehard fan base, including myself. Said it before and I’ll say it again, RUSH is Special. They really are.

And yeah, whatever website said they weren't known for their lyrics obviously didn't know what the hell they were talking about, hehe. The problem with lyrics sites and critics is that if it don't fit their preconceived format, then they must be bad lyrics. It seems that most of the the critics never made it past Jr High boy lewdness or young girl love fantasies, and to them, they aren't good lyrics. Most critics don't have the sophistication that Rush fans have for lyrics. Rush was and is now considered lyrics for thinkers.

Ok, one more thing, Ha Ha! Wait till you get to one of now famous Neil Peart drum solos that have blown minds all across UA-cam reaction channels! Those are hilarious for us fans. Eyes get wide, mouth pops open but no words come out. 😂
There a a bunch of very cool live versions, but the most popular one is Neil Peart drum solo- RUSH live in Frankfurt.
It messes people up in the best way. This is the one where people understand the hype about this man.
I was fortunate enough to see him develop it live over the decades of my RUSH concert events. 18 tours to be exact. 🤯
I have to brag, Day One fan from the very beginning. They came to my city on almost every single tour. That’s how I got to see them so much.
Right age, right music taste, in the right city at the right time and one of the earliest American markets that the band was aware of. They never forgot that day one loyalty. San Antonio, TEXAS if you’re wondering. We were a Hard Rock town and a RUSH stronghold! ROCK PRIVILEGE!

Going back to my comment in your "Working Man" reaction, if I had had a buddy back in college invite me to listen to 2112, and gave me the album cover so that I could follow the lyrics to the song, I would have been absolutely hooked from that moment on. Hell, go back a couple albums and give me the lyrics to By-tor and the Snowdog, and I would have been hooked. Neil's lyrics are so deep and timeless. When, not if, you listen to one of their pure instrumental sets, La Villa Strangiato is their first, from the Hemispheres album. The do a fun version right before Working Man during this concert. YYZ as performed in Rio is an internet favorite, and a personal favorite of mine is "Where's My Thing? - Here it is!", from the Clockworks Angels tour. It includes a drum solo.

Neil wrote amazing lyrics because he was a published book writer!

Not known for their lyrics? .. who the hell ever said THAT? .. are you freaking kidding me? .. This has to be one of the most lyrically ingenious bands ever to grace this planet. Neil Peart (the percussionist) was responsible for drafting most of their lyrics, and they are truly ingenious and some of the most superb writing of any band of any time. RIP Neil !!

I believe it was the guitarist from a band like Hootie and the blowfish. I can’t imagine thinking that after hearing these guys!

"Gotta turn it up!" Yes, indeed, Rush, even on the more relaxed tracks like this, always sounds better louder. It's about the power of the music.
I have to think that you may have misread the comment about them not being known for their lyrics. Peart's lyrics might at times be a bit pompous, overblown or overwrought, but they're always heartfelt and often quite deep. Like... they pull off sincerity better than all but a few artists. And with that, they get away with lyrics that would make another artist look ridiculous.

That was fun! You’re such a sweetie. You should also listen to the original recording, from 1988. It’s a really gorgeous song! Hugs! 😊❤️

Loved your open and honest reaction. Talking about Rush lyrics, strongly, emphatically suggest "The Garden", the very last song from their very last album. The live version is truly very good and emotional. ✌️

Great reaction. Check out the production video from years ago to find out the mysterious woman behind the iconic line. Your emotional response gives us all some insight into why Rush was loved so much by so many. Their lyrics are original and different and always convey meaning and message. A couple of classics for you. Bravado and The Garden, both live in Dallas. Have a good look at the lyrics and your life will be richer for it. Thanks, and all the best.
