Wilderness Systems Recon 120 Walkthrough- My new Yak!

- I’ve had a Lifetime Teton, Moken 10 V2, Big Fish 105 , Bonafide RS117 and now the Recon 120. I loved my Bonafide RS117 but I wanted a kayak that I can eventually add the pedal drive so I purchased the Wilderness Systems Recon 120. I can’t wait to get this in the water! What do you think?! What should I add to it?!

Awesome walkthrough! LOVE the many features! Especially the molded areas (for tackle boxes and rods), not to mention the horizontal storage.
Thanks man! The horizontal rod storage is nice if you do river fishing with lots of low branches.

I’ve had the recon for maybe a year now. It’s a great all around kayak. The seat straps broke but talked to wilderness systems they sent new straps. Bungee is for seat lock down while traveling. There is a spot on the side of the kayak for your ketch board to sit sideways but will take away from rod storage. Kayak is extremely stable

@@markdoutdoors7965 yes sir they shipped the straps they got to me less then a week, and also that smaller cup holder that’s in from of the cup holder is for your bait dye.. well at least for me anyway it sits in the hole perfectly. If you’re not apart of the fb group there is page called official wilderness systems recon owners group. I’ve seen a picture of a guy catch a nasty size shark in his ! Just shows how stable it is.

Great video i will be subbing. im looking into the Recon as well for the same reasons #1 budget (pedal) #2 able to upgrade paddle, pedal, power. #3 stability 38in you can achieve stability with less wide yaks but i will be inshore/offshore hopefully like 1/2 mile. i pre purchased a Newport Vessel 46# trolling but debating ( bow or stern mount) with a Speed Knob)
Thanks for subbing! All good reasons to to get the Recon. I initially wanted it to add the pedals but now am looking motoring options.
Just wanted to share, the cord with the hook under the seat will hook in a loop on the top of the seat back to hold it down when in transit it if you are reaching the back area while standing in the boat.
The groves and cut outs in the back are for a rudder cables for a rudder or trolling motor to foot steer
I have the recon 120 hd and it's a beast best kayak I have ever owned and I've owned a few and the 120 blows them out the water the peddle drive is awesome hands free fishing is a game changer and I was impressed with the speed of this kayak I can easily get 3 1/2 miles per hour without really even trying and the stability is also insane standing without any problem and I'm 5"11 220 pounds I never feel like im going to flip now if u acted crazy or something I'm sure u will flip the only thing that's not the greatest is turning at real slow speeds that could be with all peddle drives I don't know this is the only one I've owned with the peddle drive in tight spots can be a headache sometimes but still not that bad all in all its a amazing machine

Just ordered the same color one today! Plan on putting a trolling motor where the pedals go.Yak gadget makes a mount just for the recon. Hyped to deck it out, let me know how the stability is if you go out
Excellent! Yeah YakGadget has some nice products to accessorize the Recon. I’m excited about rigging it up. How long did they tell you it would take to get yours? I will do an on the water review of the kayak once I get it out on the water. Maryland here so still a little chilly so probably won’t be for a few weeks lol. Man the more I look at this Recon the more I want it. It seems like the perfect canvas to put exactly what you want on it and not have to pay for crap you don't want. How is the standing deck? Is there any flex to it? They need that type of seat on my PA12 for short dudes.

It really does and yes it fits in the back just fine. I’m going to have to get creative to fit more than one kayak in the back though lol

Rope under the seat is to hold the top of the seat down.
If by chance you haven’t figured out the under seat hook. It is keep the seat back in the down position while transporting. There is a loop on the back of the seat at the top.

I’m about to buy this very same kayak, even the same color. Do you still recommend it for the price and what else is on the market?
Did you happen to look at the WS radar 115 as well? I’m torn between the two and no one around me has either in stock to see in person unfortunately.
I looked at it online but for the price I was looking to spend I felt like the Recon 120 made more sense for me. I do like the seat on the Radar though. I got lucky finding this Recon in a West Marine store. I was told that Wilderness Systems are still catching up so it is very hard to even order right now.
Between the prices of the radar and recon, the recon is so much bigger, more room,and cheaper.

The recon is on my short list of things to get. I'm in cecil county
Arnold/Severna Park area. Definitely a great kayak! I have owned many different kayaks and it is for sure the most stable kayak I have been on.
hey man, what do you use to hang your kayaks on the wall? im thinking of doing the same, rather than hanging it from the garage roof! haha
I have wall hooks that I got off of Amazon. They are rated for 100 lbs total. Since the kayak is heavier I also have straps assisting so it takes some of the weight off the hooks.

The bungee under the seat latches the seat down when you fold it forward for transport

The hook is for the seat when you fold it down
The bungee cord goes in the loop on top of the seat back so it stay upright

That small bungie strap under the seat can be rigged to hold down the top half of the seat that folds down

The seat cannot be lowered. It just moves forward and back.

It will work but if that is what you mainly will use it in I would recommend something a little more
Nimble. This is a wide kayak and long which makes it super stable but it is not as maneuverable as something a little smaller and narrower.
So how does it paddle compared to your Bonafide?
Not bad but the Bonafide paddled much better. The Recon is like 4 inches wide and about 30lbs heavier but it doesn’t paddle bad once you get it going.
Does this kayak have a drain plug?????
Yes it does.
what does it retail for?
It retails for 1400 right now
No rod holders?????? Horrible design
