I will say this again. The solo in Squealer is absolute genius. The way he weaves the solo in and out of the song is flawless.
In the past few years I have come to gain a newfound respect for Angus' near-perfect phrasing and dynamics. He is one of the greatest of all time.
Yeah same here, I never really rated him as a great player but over the last couple of years I have been listening & playing a lot of early (bonn Scott era) acadaca. New found respect for Angus

Same here. Even Malcolm said one time years ago that the world would someday find out how good Angus really was. You will never find a top guitar riffs list without AC/DC on it. And it's always using the simplest of chords. Things we go have played a million times but Angus and Malcolm were just very creative.
@@deadreckoning4132 Simplest of chords but you often hear people, a lot of them great musicians, say how hard it is to play AC/DC the right way (the way the band actually did together). I think it was that combination of the entire band just having that “pocket” and groove. I think Beato did a great video where he brought in some musicians and they pointed out some of the nuances of what they did. Little things on the upbeat or down beat and things like they. Truly one of the great rock bands ever.
Decades ago, when I was taking guitar lessons, my instructor asked what guitarist I really admired. I told him Angus was the guy who made me finally go out and buy a guitar. The instructor rolled his eyes and said "Angus plays only pentatonic leads. Pretty simple stuff" So after a few lessons, I asked him to break down and show me how to play the lead on "Crabsody in Blue" off the "Let There Be Rock" import album. I could see my instructor's view on Angus do a complete 180. He kept saying "Damn.....there is a lot of stuff going on in this!" To make a long story short, he became a big Angus fan after analyzing his playing. 40 years later I am still playing a lot of Angus inspired guitar riffs.
So much this 👍. This partcular song shows how much Angus's playing is steeped in the blues right from the early days, he is about a LOT more than just pentatonic licks.
I did a deep dive on AC/ DC stuff a while back and essentially gained a whole new respect for not only their playing, but also their song-crafting abilities. There's a lot more going on under the hood, ESPECIALLY with Angus's soloing style, than a lot of people first think and most of it stems from their blues roots back in the early 70s. Great band.
He's also not listened to Fly On The Wall and Blow Up Your Video... which is probably his most firey playing that I believe he's showcased. Lots of speed and Eddie Van Halen-like pinch harmonics that "squeal" more than his typical pinch harmonic style. Some of that could be from having his amplifier set at high gain levels and the volume turned up as high as it will go
@@kevinmcguinness1113 he likes to add that 6th note in at times. And I don't mean just the flattened 5th note (the "blues note"), but that note that makes the pentatonic scales suddenly become a mode of the key he's playing in. He does this during his live solo during Let There Be Rock using the B minor / D major pentatonic at the 7th and 9th frets, but will throw in the D and G strings in at the 6th fret, which are G# and C#, which now make up both the B minor and A major scales
I think what impresses me most about Angus is his insane vibrato and how/where he fits it in during his solos

After learning the solo to You Shook Me All Night Long, I realized how impressive Angus' playing is. One of the things he does best, is his seamless transition from the major to minor pentatonic scale. His playing always seems so effortless and he makes it sound so tight! Great lesson, as always!
The best solo in the most overplayed and worn out tune in the catalog. 😢

@@jayjeffrey1724 I find that a little hard to believe, just because he flows so effortlessly between the major and minor pentatonic. I think he's being modest by saying he doesn't know scales.

angus is a great example of how important mastering the fundamentals is. his technique is definitely more basic than a lot of modern players, but it’s pretty much flawlessly executed down to the smallest details

Angus was once asked by a report what his best special effect was. His reply..."I plug a Gibson SG into a Marshal amp. I am the special effect". Classic answer.
The thing that fascinates me is that there is something about pentatonic lines that, when done really well, you never get tired of hearing them. They can work for just about any style of music as well.
They do, which is why the pentatonic is regarded as a riff box ideal for improvisation. The A major / F# minor pentatonic is my favorite to play in. Everything sounds so dramatic in that key, versus something like the A minor / C major or E minor / G major pentatonic that sound so "basic" and bland, yet, make up pretty much every rock song
Soooooo very well stated!!!! I've always like (not loved) AC/DC and respected the heck out of them. On a whim, I decided to try to master the 'Shook Me All Night' solo. While I feel pretty darn good about it, it opened my eyes COMPLETELY on how rich bluesy bendy that Angus is!
First of all, the solo is all pentatonic, BUT, it goes up the neck quite nicely, and in a timely manner. Second of all, it's not just a bunch of notes, it is PHRASED with patience. Lastly, the BENDS are FANTASTIC and PERFECT. It really is a perfect solo, because you can 'hum' it. It's 'singable' and that's a sign of a great composer! I am now a huge ACDC fan, LOL.
Angus has always been a huge factor in my playing. That vibrato is on point along with Paul Kossof.
The brothers admired Paul Kossoff. Maybe Humble Pie, Amboy Dukes, MC5, and Cactus, too. Animals, Yardbirds. & Stones, Chuck Berry (obviously) they also said. I saw video of an Australian concert in b&w from 1975 with tons of girls and playing "Let It Rock", but can't recall where. Dngit

This really sounds great and the price is awesome. Not only Angus’s solos, but the rhythm sections by Malcolm, when you go to playing them they are also more complex than you think. Keep rocking.
Angus is unique. He ain't tricking anyone. His solo thinking and right hand picking is very different from any other guitarist that I've ever attempted to copy. Once you get the gist of how his musical brain thinks you can better see in your mind his approach to his solo note selection and why his solos stand out so much. While his whole body is in motion nonetheless. An amazing rock guitarist.
Love that you’re pointing out the nuances man. That, and pure feel is what make licks from guys like Angus and Billy Gibbons magical! Pretty cool that they both use string finger rolling and dramatic bends. ✌🏻

Angus was my first inspiration to pick up a guitar in the early 80s. Over the years I fell into the shred rabbit hole and got into Vai, Satch, YJM, Gilbert… for maybe 20 years I sort of forgot about AC/DC until recently…

My very first album I ever owned was Highway to Hell . My dad gave it to me on vinyl . That album came out the same year I was born. Angus and the whole band is amazing .

Angus was never “easy” for me to cop solos from. He always had a very unique smoothness to his phrases.

What an incredible focus on and explanation of what really matters with these artists. It's all about their touch/technique, or the way the touch the strings and plant and use their fingers. Anyone can show you the notes. This is awesome!
angus was one of the first guitarists to get me into playing. As I've gotten older I see a lot of old blues licks in his playing. like the double roll, something buddy guy did in his earlier recordings. Thanks for your lesson on Angus. love it man
The trick is in the invisible, and that is TIME. It's his time that makes everything he does magical, and that will forever be a mystery when you tab his lines.

The slow bend most likely comes from listening to Paul Kossoff after all, they did borrow the opening to Shot Down In Flames from Soldier Boy on Free At Last. His vibrato is very similar as well.
I also like how Angus will throw in that Stones style country lick once in a while though much faster. Walk All Over You comes to mind.
What a cool break down of Angus style. I must admit I have always thought of his playing as not that difficult sounding, now I must admit I was wrong and now I need to take a closer look!!!!
Simple Angus young formula. His solos are all delta blues if you don't bend, slide those bends. Light bulb moment for me.
All of this great playing,and then doing this while exerting the utmost insane energy with his body movements. It's / he is super impressive.

I got the double roll technique from Richie Blackmore, from Machine Head, on the song Lazy, back when I started out. I still use it extensively today.

It's funny you say Angus is "deceptively simple". Took the words out my mouth. I learned to play guitar off ACDC Scorpions and Metallica. Over a decade and a half ago the ACDC song I ever learned front to back was of course "You Shook me all night long". Literally took 2 weeks to get solo down alone. Which I learned after first learning all of Mal's parts. Nobody plays like ACDC no matter how bands have taken ideas from them. Cool video btw. Keep I'm coming. Glad to see the younger generation is studying this incredible band.

In a guitar magazine interview I read in the early 80's Angus was probed on what scales he played... he said 'Chuck Berry scales ' , He described the upper scales on his fretboard as 'The dusty end'.... No bullshit rock and roll !

Always noticed this from my beginner days that his grip and phrasing was special when I tried to learn his solos. My favorite underrated shred sesh from him is the solo in Shake A Leg.

Angus loves triplets! He never met a triplet pattern he didn’t like. I think it’s because the triplet sounds so good against the straight 1/2 quarter note pattern of the drums and rhythm guitar.
He is more 4 note phrases than triplets...Page is the triplet king.

Awesome man… ❤ I think that Allen Collins did the triad roll. Skynyrd working for MCA really showcases this style. Definitely not taking anything away from Angus I do believe that Angus is one of the best! But Skynyrd never gets enough credit.
That solo is Ed King on a Strat. Allen and Gary do the unison parts, beautifully I might add. Allen most likely played that solo after Ed left but when Steve Gaines joined he started doing the Strat part so Allen and Gary could do that great unison part.
To my ears he has always had kind of a violin-like tone/style when hes doing solos.....Especially during the Bon Scott years.
No one... no one ever in the history of ever told me how to make that sound that you made with the double stop bend. I watched videos of people making that sound with their fingers, and never understood how that worked. I didnt know it was two strings and the pinky is involved.. 20 years of trying to teach myself because i am poor, and no video ever has ever explained that sound. Thank you.
Ive played the role of Angus since the mid/late 80s in cover bands.
Beside the technical stuff he is doing, (and there is quite a lot of technical stuff which really seems un-noticed), you are expected to be performing to the extent where you appear to be "out of control".
Spin around on your back, and see to whole gig through a blur - because your head is banging throughout, you are moving across the stage, and trying to take split glimpses of your fretboard when you can.
After the gig, the other members comment "did you see this" or "did you see the woman with her tits out"? my answer is no - i was too busy.
I'm quite old now, but even when i was young (no pun intended), The balance pacing of performance vs being totally knackered is a constant juggling act.

I'm a lucky old fucker who gets to play in a cover band with a vocalist that can confidently sing ACDC songs. Along with that, I own and play a "64 Gibson SG.
Here's the question..... Is ACDC the best ROCK band of all time? Hard for me to pick between them and Zeppelin! Rock on Robert!

I was playing in a cover band in the late 80s. There was a guy in the PA crew that looked like he’d done everything. He was doing lights that night. We played some old Acca it was ‘Jailbreak’ for the sound check. The roadie very politely gave me some pointers on how to correctly play it and I thought “who’s this dude tellin me shit”
Turns out he did a heap of work for the band in the early days. I think his name was ‘spider’
I think they were all called spider back in those days.
Angus young could play in time while riding a mountain bike and realing in a fish as he was skydiving
I listen to all kinds of music. However, pentatonic leaks done right or where it's at. Don't care about sweet-picking, don't care about fast shreddy stuff. When I hear a good pentatonic lick, it just hits you a little different. Angus was one of the best at this. So was Eddie Van halen. Anybody who took the time to learn any of their stuff knows that it's almost straight pentatonic.
