As a pre-teen kid my 3 biggest guitar influences were Tony Iommi, Ace Frehley and Angus, so I always loved SG's and Les Pauls. I remember I also had book of black and white concert footage of The Who and Pete played an SG throughout the entire book. I knew then I was destined to have an SG. After years of playing a Sekova brand silverburst strat copy my parents took me to a local mom and pop Gibson dealer in 1982 and there it was... a 1982 SG "Firebrand Deluxe" in black. I think it was like $400 and although we were considered poor, my parents bought it for me for Christmas. I later saw a photo of Angus on a Hit Parader magazine cover with the exact guitar including the factory reverse zebra bridge pickup. Since then I've toured with many bands, moved a dozen times, been through a divorce, addiction, sold off entire collections of guitars and lived in my car but against all odds... I still have that guitar today and it's sitting next to me as I type this, 40+ years later!

Angus almost didn't get to use his John Diggins SG throughout the 80s as, after one of the 1982 shows at the Glasgow Apollo, I had access to the stage (I had been given a pass as compensation for losing my seat). It was sitting alongside his backup guitar in the wings of the stage. There was nobody around and the backstage exit was just a few feet away. I had a long coat on and the guitar fitted under it without being visible. I very nearly snaffled it but my teenage conscience got the better of me and I put it back in its stand. But I did get to play it first!
Looking back, I'm so glad I didn't pinch it. I could never have lived with myself.

It’s the opposite of a Flying V lol. The part of the SG that’s tough for me is how it’s shifted over to the left. If you look few players interchange with an SG live. Even Bonamassa who’s basically a traveling guitar show. I know he has them but I’ve never seen him use one live (I’m sure he has tho). But it’s a tough switch. Personally I can go from big neck to small neck, single coils to HB’s no problem but as soon as I strap that SG on it’s like woah wait give me a minute here I just hit a G and it sounded allot like an A lol

A point of note : i dont think john digins so much as made an new SG out right for angus, as rescued an old gibson that had corroded so bad -- through sweat leaking into the electronics -- that it had caught fire, for the monsters of rock. I might be wrong on this, but i dont think so. If you look at pictures of that guitar it has a slightly alcove look to the body were the damaged wood had been "plained" away.

There’s a Rig Rundown on AC/DC where they interview Trace Foster who is Angus Young’s guitar tech. They showed the three guitars that Angie was using for that tour. One of them was the black SG that began life as the triple pickup custom and is known as the Back in Black SG. The other was the walnut finish that also was painted black and a new SG given to Angus by the guitarists for Paul McCartney and Angus was being used as a backup. You can see the repairs made to both of the older ones where the block of wood was cut for the wireless pack. Nice to see this history tie in nicely with that video.

Walnut finish, volute, Made In USA stamp, and large pickguard would put it at 1970. I had that exact 1970 model, which was a basketcase when I got it, so I modified it to all hell. Sold it around 2001-02, I think, at the Michigan Guitar Show to a kid who obviously intended to flip it. In his Vintage Guitar column on oddball ebay finds, Will Ray featured Danelectro guitars that had been modded extensively. In a side note, he gave a description of an SG he'd found that matched mine exactly. Almost wish I had that guitar back. Lol.

Nice job and good effort! Although a few things could be changed throughout. I will mention that his black Donnington SG with the Les Paul is a 1963. The body details and serial number put it as so and he also had another almost identical black SG with him since the Donnington tour which can be hard to tell apart if you don't know what to look for that one is a 1963/64.

All the Angus signature guitars in the mid 2000’s came with the devil on the headstock and trapezoid inlays. It also had the ‘walrus tooth’ tremolo system on them also. I think it was around 2015 another two signatures came out. One was a custom shop and the other retailed for around £1000. The custom shop had the batwing pick guard whereas it’s cheaper counter part had the smaller pick guard.

The Schaffer-Vega Diversity System from the 70s was eventually banned by the FCC, but, as mentioned, it did something to the guitar tone that Angus liked. A company duplicated the box and it can be used like an effect. You can see it on Angus' Premier Guitar Rig Rundown video from 2016.

Thank you for this, I'm pretty sure this the one everyone's been waiting for. I would like to add its said Angus' first sg got work done to it after he started using the highway to hell second. Hes also said he has retired it to only studio cause he wants nothing to happen to it. So what a lot of people think including me is that the cherry sg that's used on the back n black music videos with white pickup selector washer, full batwing pick guard, with a pickup ring around the bridge pickup that's later added with lightning bolt inlays is his first sg just redone. 1] He said he doesn't use it anymore, which is true he hasn't played it since early 2000s. 2] It looks exactly like the first one just redone. Also he has played the signature ones that look like that one but if you look closely those ones don't have a pickup ring around the bridge pickup. Thanks just thought I'd share.

Theres some slide work on the black ice album, wonder if Angus used an sg for that or whether it's even Malcolm playing the slide

    • @garyginther6742

It would have had to have the action raised, unless he has that magic touch and can avoid the frets with the slide even with low action. I would not doubt he can. I'm pretty sure his action is always set low, but I really don't know. It would've been nice if that info had been covered, but I'm not complaining. It's still a nice video.

@@garyginther6742 I use an epiphone sg as my main slide guitar.. with the strings slackened off a bit, you can raise or drop the action at the bridge in seconds using just your fingers..

I recall a Guitar World article about this. I don't think they mentioned what guitar was used on Stormy May Day, but they did say it was Angus playing it.

    • @garyginther6742

@@bombercountyblues I can appreciate your comment, but that would not change the action much farther away from the bridge - closer to the nut. I'm sure in the studio AND on stage, he would have a special guitar for combination slide work and normal fret work, and possibly have another one that's just for slide work only. I'm sure that's how most professionals would approach putting in slide parts. Your approach would be too time consuming and too much of a hassle for players with a lot of dough.

Gary Rossington uses an sg on Freebird for slide, he says and does, I’ve seen pictures of it, he slides a little screw driver under the strings on the first fret to raise the action, still does it to this day

It sure is/was! The Easybeats had a lot of good songs and his brother along with Harry Vanda (lead guitarist for The Easybeats) also produced the first few albums of AC/DC up to Powerage.

I've seen few pictures of Angus holding and/or playing quite a few different guitars. Mustangs, ES-335s, Les Pauls (both single and double cut). I'm not sure if he owned them or if they were borrowed.

Despite his obvious yen for the SG, I’m pretty sure he nevertheless keeps a Gibson Les Paul at his home. He certainly afford it.
