As a Puerto Rican I can say that Cuba and Puerto Rico are definitely long lost twin brothers who love each other wholeheartedly but were separated in adolescence and haven't seen each other or talked to each other for decades and have now grown old, still longing to spend time together again. It's quite sad actually. I hope that some day soon there will finally be a long awaited family reunion.
+Jasper Paolo Mate you do know we made your flag right? did it strike you odd that our flags are the same thing just with different colors
Paulo Valdespino I know the history
+Jasper Paolo i thought Cubans looked down on Puerto ricans?
Iron Fist Not at all. Nothing but love.
+Iron Fist Yeah we do. It's something about the accent and island rivalry but in secret we love eachother.
I love Cuba 🇨🇺 it played a big role in my country's independence so gracias Cuba .....Saludos desde Namibia 🇳🇦
Laimy LJ Hango as a Cuban, I wish we could say the same thing. Still waiting for independence from the Castro dictatorship
@@Reisito305 I hope someday soon Ray.....Viva Libertad
Laimy LJ Hango I remember we took a lot of Namibians home during the war. Specifically to Youth Island where we built schools and stuff like that.
Have a warm hug from a Cuban friend :)
Ray Cuban I’m afraid that if we don’t take up arms they will keep their feet upon us :(

God bless you Cuba, your gracious people, your Salsa and your sandwiches. Wish you nothing but prosperity moving forward.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
Justin Santiago thank you for your comment my island neighbor

+EoghanMcCarthy900 Same omg
+EoghanMcCarthy900 I was thinking my grandchildren would see the US
+PhedelCastro Ireland will hopefully be united before Zimbabwe
Totallus Campbell Is there still a push for a united Ireland?
+PhedelCastro mostly around the border counties as partition affect us the most, but yes! Ever heard of Sinn Fein? They're great except I am not a socialist, otherwise I would vote for them because they're the only party (unfortunately) with a United Ireland in its top list of priorities. Partition is complex but it is and continues to be wrong, hence a large push for it, especially where I'm from in Monaghan !
It's not that Cuban coffee is strong, it's just how coffee is supposed to be. The problem is you Americans with your black-tainted water that you call coffee...
Word of wisdom!
Agreed!!
It´s like the ristretto in Italy, and in Argentina you have the "posillo" but it´s not even close in quality.
That stand-up part was so embarassing.
I'm from Brazil and we can't agree more
You forgot about how Canada kept good relations with Cuba.
And he forgot about relationship with hatit too

Yes it does, only 8 minutes and one of those minutes is on coffee. Meanwhile completely glossing over the US's military interventions and sanctions on Cuba.
@@HotClubDeParis They did state in an earlier video "this is Geography Now, not History Now"
Back in Soviet times, the USSR would have indubitably been Cuba’s best friend, and even today, I believe, Cuban-Russian relations are pretty good; I guess kind of like Russian-Venezuelan relations.
Cuban-Spanish relations are pretty good as well iirc but Venezuela is undoubtedly nr 1

I recently went to cuba with a group from a college in jackson mississippi. Cuba was one of the best experiences ever. We got to explore havana, hike in the sierra escambary mountains ,go to revolutionary square, museum of revolution, and the over 500 year old city of trinidad.
One of my cultural anthropology Professors in college used to live in Guatemala, and she would always talk about how intelligent Cubans were. Apparently, according to my proffesor, many Cuban doctors move to other parts of Central America and are revered as some of the best in the world. We don't hear enough about this country here in America so this was an amazing episode to see!
The Cuban flag was originally created by Narciso López, a New York-based Cuban exile, and used the suggestions from the Cuban poet, Miguel Teurbo Tolón.
The Cuban flag was first adopted on the 20th of May, 1902.
The Cuban flag consists of 5 equal horizontal bands - which contains 3 blue bands which alternate with 2 white bands, and a red equilateral triangle at the hoist side with a white 5-pointed star.
The blue bands represents the three military districts of Cuba; Central, Occidental, and Oriental.
The white bands represents the purity of the patriotic cause.
And the red stands for... 'Say it with me' *cue epic rock music* "The blood shed in the struggle for independence."
The triangle stands for equality, strength and constancy. (For future reference, an equilateral triangle usually represents equality.)
And finally, the white star is called "La Estrella Solitaria" (The Lone Star) and it represents independence and freedom.
nice
Thanks
That was very informative
Thanks!!
omg your name lol
Im a Cuban content creator and just want to thank you for doing this episode but I wish it was a bit longer. Cuba is a powerhouse for LATAM culture and iconic in the global scene. I think its needs a bit more justice. Also no Latinos in this episode! Im in LA!!! Listen i'll show you how to salsa dance and we can do an episode on the cultural dances of the Caribbean! :)
Please don't forget the Rumba!

I find it weird that the Cuban embargo was not brought up at all
It was, right before the X-men reference.
This is right when he was switching formats so this episode was awkwardly short and in big need of an update haha. I remember at the time being like nooo flag dissection but he picked it back up to longer pretty fast
He mentioned it at 6:22.

I'm kinda sad... in the diplomacy section you forgot to mention Cuba's relationship with Canada, which began under Pierre Trudeau.
The Castro/Trudeau relationship was kinda special, First of all because Canada allowed business between Canadian industrial and the Communist regime, which boosted the Cuban Tourism market. Castro even went to Trudeau's funeral at Montreal's Notre Dame Cathedral in 2000.
That's kinda major when it comes to Cuban ''friends'' in the world. Without Canada, there is no Cuba tourism industry.
The Lost Prophecies There's even a rumor that Justin Trudeau is actually the son of Fidel Castro.
of course it was, Old Man Trudeau being a leftwing communist sympathizer. All the PM did was legitimize a murderous regime and a human rights violator. What a brilliant statesman.
You say as if you were actually proud of it...
Plus, Cuba was where the FLQ fled to after the October Crisis.
"without Canada, there's no Cuba tourism industry" come on please we get tourists from all over the world with or without canadians.

It is odd. Growing up in mainland China, I learnt that Cuba is our country's good friend and they are very good at playing volleyball. It is interesting to learn new perspectives about the country.

Same here. Definitely in my top 3 (with Andorra and Bali, Indonesia).
Le Rapace I loved hiking the mountains in Andorra. And at least back in the '90s it was lovely place to visit in summertime: all those hotels, bars, restaurants, car rentals etc created to serve ski tourists in winter were more than happy to get any customers during the summer.
What countries have you been to ?
***** Don't know who you asked, but here's my (possibly incomplete) list:
United States, Cuba, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Ireland, Spain, France, Andorra, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Soviet Union/Russia (yes, both), Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Macau, Hong Kong, Japan.

I love Cuba! Have been traveling there (following all the rules of the US, just in case that Big Brother is reading) for years. I had visited during the "special period" after the fall of the Soviet Bloc and more recently as the USA announced and started new diplomatic relations with the country. (And will be going again in August.) It is a fascinating country and the people are great. As you point out in the video, Cuba and Puerto Rico have had a long history of friendship: last two Spaniard colonies, both invaded by the USA at the same time, similar cuisine, similar accents... the same flag with the colors inverted but with the exact same meaning ("blood of the martyrs"!!!) Indeed, there is a poem by Puerto Rican poet Lola Rodríguez de Tió that says: "Cuba and Puerto Rico are. of the same bird, its two wings; they receive bullets or flowers, on the same heart." (It sounds much better in Spanish...) Anyway, loved how accurate and respectful the video about such an incredibly difficult country was. (Still, I will be missing the flag section...)

What happened to Mexican-Cuban relations? Without Mexico we all know Fidel Castro never comes to power plus Mexico was the only nation to vote against the expulsion of Cuba from the Organization of the Americas and against the Embargo.
Fidel Castro is the worst thing that's ever happened to Cuba
Lucas Rengifo Regardless of that you have to know that Mexico arrested both Fidel and his brother and Che, notices that Spain and the US are having too much influence with other nations in the Americas that Mexico was not ok with, sets Fidel, Raul, and Che free from jail by making it look like a jail brake, attempts to set up a communist government in hopes of countering the Fascist governments of Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Peru, gain influence in nations like Guatemala, Salvador, Nicaragua, and so on, convinces the US to support the Castros, and fails miserably at attaining an ally, influencing the region, and keeping the US and Spain out of the Americas.

My favourite ever quote about Cyprus: it's an island split down the middle, with each side crammed with wonderful, hospitable people who will welcome you into their homes and regale you with horror stories about how terrible the people on the other side are.
Most cuban americans were upper middle/upper class in the pre castro cuba. Their perspectives are of course extremely valuable and part of the bigger picture, however, they aren't the entire picture. Cuba is an incredibly complex place, it deserves some nuance.
