A correction. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao (the ABC-islands) speak a native language called Papiamento/Papiamentu. Dutch and English are also official languages, but are less popular on the islands. Dutch is mostly spoken by Dutch people living on the island, and is also taught in school, but isn't really spoken by native Curaçaoans on the island, outside of school.

No, Livonian definitely wasn't the main language back then. From what I have read, the elite consisted of Baltic Germans who owned the land and rented it out to the peasants (on extremely unfair conditions) and Polish (and seldom Lithuanian) people who may have been the rulers, but had no regional power. The people under the commonwealth spoke whatever language was their mother tongue (Lithuanian, Estonian, Livonian, Polish etc), however, Livonian was not a language with that many speakers even back then. Unfortunately, the beautiful language has become extinct nowadays.

Technically it was Lithuanian-Poland Commonwealth, but actually it was Latvian because of stated reasons above. As Lithuanian I can say that we do not consider this reagion to have something in common with Lithuania besides the fact that it was incorporated during Commonwealth times. (And most of Lithuanian people does not even know this fact since it was not teached in school or just breathly mentioned).

The Caribbean is confusing because some people falsely label it as the West Indies.
When Columbus set sail to the Indies (Modern Day Philippines) he got lost and ended up in the Caribbean. He then called the Caribbean the Indies.
Decades after….captains realized that there were 2 Indies and were forced to rename the Caribbean the West Indies and the Philippines the East Indies to stop captains from getting lost.

Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean, and Mayotte and Reunion in the Indian Ocean, really are better analogues, since they are departments in the same standing as the other departments of mainland France, the way Hawai‘i is a state in equal standing with the other 49 states. French Polynesia is more like... the French American Samoa. Ish.

@@sabercat5490 It is not because the native indigenous people of the Caribbean Islands looked like people from India. It is because when Christopher Columbus sailed the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, Spain was trying to find a new trade route westward to achieve the Indies (India, Indonesia and South East Asia nowadays) and they thought Earth was smaller than its actual size so when they arrived at the Antilles, thet didn't realize they were in a completely different landmass but thought they had arrived in the Indies. It was not until very later (Columbus had already passed away by then) that they realized they had "discovered" a completely different continent so Europeans started calling the Americas "West Indies" to distinguish them from the Indies, which were then referred as East Indies to make the difference between the two places more accurate.

It happened and failed. Didn’t have the entire Caribbean collective, it lacked the Latin Nations. I’d say it’s tough to do one without the Latin Caribbean taking part and one big problem is that those nations tend to have identity crisis or vehemently fight them (DR and PR especially. Cuba is a hot mess. Haiti is complicated and mostly seems nullified into no action). Without these it genuinely makes no sense.
