  • Every animal on the planet carries with it an astonishingly diverse microbial zoo - millions of invisible organisms that thrive on the skin and in the gut. They play an important role in health and disease and may also shape human emotions and behaviour. Viruses may stimulate aggression, parasites can trigger suicide and bacteria can block fear responses. The evidence for our interaction with microbes may even make us want to re-evaluate the concept of free-will.
A lecture by Robin May recorded on 22 March 2023 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

There was one interesting case of a faecal transplant patient whose Parkinson’s went into remission post transplant. It’s a single case, so isn’t of much significance by itself, but does suggest possible research paths.

If you mean the one specifically afflicting passengers on the Overground, which causes the host to forget to cover their nose and mouth - yes!

Could dietary preferences be "controlled" by biome?

Like when you get a craving for salted food for a day or two or sugar, be it cakes or fresh fruit. I currently have yearning for home made fresh coleslaw. Yum

Every choice we make generates a corresponding timeline of experience. Is the resulting narrative a limit or a creative guideline? No wrong answer - only another choice.

Is it possible Toxoplasma makes cat owners more prone to taking risks and letting their cats run around and hunt for brave mice.

Lots of correlation does not imply causation moments here. Parasites and human behavior for example...

Correlation 100% "implies" causation. Thats the basis of research.

@@piccalillipit9211 No it's not. Correlation is a tool to falsify your null hypothesis. It does not imply causation.
