Three Common Tractor Problems that Can be Fixed in 30 Seconds

- I get many tractor and equipment service questions from viewers, and some are way too complicated to resolve over the Internet. There are though, three issues that are easily solved in less than 30 seconds. They're pretty common, even among seasoned tractor people with farm backgrounds. Today we'll talk about these simple problems and their solutions.
The first problem is the front end loader quits working. Usually it will go up or down but won't tilt or curl, or vice versa. This usually occurs after the loader has been taken off and re-installed on the tractor, or the tractor has been used for extreme brush cutting.
What's happened is a hydraulic line has come loose. Many times this is not visually apparent. By checking the hydraulic couplers, there's usually one that is partially unplugged and is restricting the flow of hydraulic oil to one loader function. Finding it and plugging it back in fixes the problem.
The second problem is the three point quits working. Underneath the seat, between the operators ankles, on most tractors, is a knob that controls the rate of the three point hitch raise and lower functions. If an operator, or a kid playing on the tractor, turns the knob all the way in, they've essentially put the 3 point in transport lock. Compounding the problem is the fact that many operators don't know the knob is there, and accidentally turn it when trying to adjust the seat spring tension, which is controlled by a knob in the same area. Once the knob is turned back to allow flow to the three point to resume, the problem is solved.
Finally, I've had multiple people write that they can't get their power take off shaft on, or off. This problem many times occurs because there is a common PTO shaft design with a mechanism that appears to be a release that can be slid forward. It feels like a PTO release and it is spring loaded, but sliding it forward does nothing, no power take off shaft can be attached or removed by moving the collar forward. Instead, pulling a similar collar back releases the PTO attachment and allows the shaft to be put on or taken off with ease.
All of these problems are frustrating, but the good news is, once you know what to look for when you experience these issues, you can easily and quickly repair them and get back to work.

As soon as I heard "extreme brush hogging" I knew I was on the right track. You were exactly right- it was not obvious that a hose had been pulled out of the proper seating in the coupler underneath the tractor. Thank you!
Mike I could hug you like the service manager story. My 3 point hitch was going up and down very slowly. I let a fence installer borrow for the use of the bucket and then it would not go down at all. I you tubed your sight, as I had seen some of your vids before, and Eureka the knob was on lock. Wow what a relief. Many many thanks
Hello Mike
Thanks for the advice on the PTO. I had a hard time last week trying to put on mine until my neighbur came to my rescue- just like you did for yours. I wished I had seen your video a week sooner.
Great channel!
Glad I watched your video. I had my front end loader hydraulic line come undone while shredding pasture. You saved me! Followed your directions and got the line back together. I have a JD 5075M with loader and 7’ shredder.
Hi Mike, I really thank you for your video about hose couplings coming loose. You saved me a lot of time and frustration. Keep up the great advice
Haha - I've been fooled by both the 3-pt hitch trick and the PTO shaft trick. It happens to everyone. Thanks for the tips. Keep up the great work.
Hi Mike !! Love your showing three common problems and how to fix them. The photo support is superb. Nicely done as usual. - Dean from Minnesota
Just got my first tractor and I think that this is just about my favorite instructional video. I truly appreciate that!
Mike: you really helped me today . yesterday I was clearing a tree line and my loader stopped moving . There was no hydraulic geysers or puddles and I checked the quick disconnect but I didn't inspect it closely. Your video made the point that a loose fitting can be hard to spot , sure enough you were right , that was the problem. You were also right that the lower hose is a PITA to get reconnected There is place set for you in heaven brotherman , Thanks so much, I need that machine and I have it back, you saved me a lot of time. Take care and keep making videos, great work.
You just saved me hours! I just picked up an old Yanmar 2210D and the manual isn't too clear on 3-point hitch troubleshooting. It was stuck in the up position. Someone really cranked that control knob tight. All it took was a little movement toward the open position and it was working again! You have a new subscriber.
Hey Mike, thanks for the tip. I have a new 40hp MF and have 30 hours on it. Yesterday, the front end loader would not tip forward or pull back. I researched your info. I had been bush hogging in high material. You suggested a hose had come loose. You were spot on. Reconnected and works great. Thank you my friend. 👍😃
Hydraulics failed with heavy work. Thought it was a 1000.00 repair.
Had to leave my Kubota in the field since the bucket was flat with the ground.
Watched this video and thought it was worth a closer look.
To my intense relief, it was an un coupled line. Fixed it just like tractor Mike said.
Thank you sir. Sincerely, thank you. Your a great human.
been watching you for two years, and still learning (and using your products). thank you.
It's the little things ....! Love the videos Mike, pretty sure I've watched them all now. Great resource for new tractor owners like me. Keep them coming!
I've a new 2017 Case bought in 18. Enjoyed the insight. I'm leaving my loader on.
Good tips, Mike! Hope I’ll remember them when these things happen to me!
Thanks so much for posting this. It just saved me a ton of time trying to diagnose a hydraulic issue while reattaching my loader!
Good advise, these type of easy to fix issues can cause much stress and frustrations. Been there done that! Thanks for another good information video Mike.
Thanks for the great tips, Mike! Didn’t know about the 3 point lock feature with that adjustment knob. That’s good to know! I have had that very same fight with the PTO shaft until I remembered to pull back on the collar.
Quick, easy to understand and meaningful tips. Perfect.
Please do more of the same.
Thanks for taking the time to make your videos Mike!🚜✌🏻️
Thanks Mike for all of your Great Tips and for all of your hard work and dedication to educating those of us who are new to tractors and even the seasoned farm hands.🤠🚜🇺🇸
Hi Mike I have a problem with my tractor it spills the oil through the breather pipe what might be the cause pliz help
Thanks Mike bought a new grapple worked great for a few days then VIOLA , took your advice looked at all the lines to the grapple from the 3rd remote and just like you showed us the coupler was not plugged in all the way ...THX !
Thanks Tractor Mike! I buy and sell used tractors under 40 horsepower as a hobby. I picked up a Ford 1900 tractor (around 30 hp) and didn't look at it too closely until about 3 weeks after I bought it. I paid just $5,000 because the seller had jus tpurchesed it and couldn't get the 3- point hitch to work. The seller was right... it didn't work! I checked for answers on UA-cam and your "Three Common Tractor Problems" video showed up. I watched it at 1:00 am in the morning and immediately went to the shop. You were right! The knob you talked about was turned off completely. I started the tractor and turned the knob open and the 3-point hitch works just fine! Thanks again!
Mike... God bless you, sir. Six years ago I parked my old International Harvester 244. I thought it was totaled. I had changed all the fluids and plugs... but the 3-point didn't work. My finish mower would drop down and wouldn't raise. So, discouraged, I parked it and let it sit for years... Time went by. Children were born. Time passed... and then today I got a wild hair and decided to revisit the old machine... She needed a new battery. And some fresh fluids. But she fires up strong! 💪 AND NOW THANKS TO YOU THE 3-POINT WORKS!!! 😆🤘 It lives on!!
Thank you for helping my uncle's legacy... it was his tractor. Now it will work the land again. He's smiling down at us in heaven. 🙏

That's AWESOME!!! Glad to hear you got the old IH going.
Hey thanks Mike, never would have expected a coupler to come unhooked on its own, but looking closely it had, easy fix once I figured out how to take the pressure off as it was in a raised position
Thank you so much Mike. You repaired my front loader not going up issue with a twist of my right hand!
I love this video, as a mechanic, I deal with at least one of these issues a lot during the month. Thank you for posting this!
Thank you, I was able to get my 3 point hitch to move up and down again because of this video.
Great stuff. Right to the point and -- clear answers that many of us want to know. Thanks for the share!
Thanks Mike! Some great tips. Really appreciate it. Cheers!
I'm so very grateful for your videos Mike. Thank you!
Great video! Very helpful. Thanks Mike!
Once again, you've save the day Tractor Mike. My hydraulic dial under the seat needed adjustment and Bingo! Bob's your Uncle! Thanks heaps
Thank YOU for your fix on three point lock! It helped me on my new Kubota m6-141.
Hey thanks for the useful tips. 3pt quit working today while i was using tractor. Valve must have vibrated shut. Less than 30 seconds and moving again. Never even thought of turning the Valve
Good video. Not all folks that own a tractor are or were farm folks. Thanks Mike.
Two years ago you and your family did the funnyist christmas video I ever seen. Please do another this year.
Mike, I've owned my New Holland 1925 for 24 yrs since new. Learned more from you on how to properly run a tractor in the last 3 months when I dicovered your channel than I have in all those years! And the tractor seems happier too!😂😂
I was trying to figure out how a 1925 model year was only 24 years old, lol.
Thank You Mike . I just had the problem with PTO arms not going up or down today .... Found your video while searching for some insight to this problem . I went back outside and turned the knob below the seat and the arms fell to the ground ...
Thanks again !!!👍👍
Glad it helped! Everyone has to have that happen to them once.
Thanks Mike for those helpful tips. I will admit that I was guilty of that PTO problem.
Thanks those tips will come in handy at some point for sure. 👍
Another great video! Thank you Mike!
We have had that PTO coupler give us trouble several times because the little ball bearings inside were either rusty or had dirt in them and would not move. We keep everything well lubed but this one happens because the end of the PTO shaft was left hanging in the dirt when it was not on the tractor. We now use a couple large wire tie straps to hold the shaft up to the top of the three point hitch when it is not attached to the tractor.
I really like your channel it has been a lot of help to me ...Thanks!
Love your common sense easy to understand videos Thank You for your time and knowledge
Great advise! Thank you
Great stuff Mike!
Awesome video Mike Thankya for sharing.
Thank you for your help. I was able to resolve problem #2!
I ran into a 3 point hitch not going up or down on my tractor a while back. This is probably specific to my brand of tractor (John Deere). When I first bought the tractor it came configured with a loader/bucket on the front and a backhoe on the back. To run the backhoe it uses a system called "power beyond" where the hydraulics hook up with a supply and return from the tractor to the attachment. When the backhoe (or any other attachment that uses the "power beyond") is removed the supply and return hoses on the tractor need to be connected together. If not, the three point hitch will not function.
I luckily figured it out before an embarrassing trip to my local dealer.
Mike you are great. Thx for taking the time for your video you really helped me
Great info, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your video mate been big help cheers
You sir are awesome! Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙂
Great info Mike.
Great video - Thanks!
first i checked the fluid level, then checked for a loose hose connection... yep, problem No. 1! solved! me is big hero after watching this video. thanks dude.
Thanks
Dang, I ain't ever seen a second collar (on the PTO implement) that moved forward like you show'd. I can see why he had a heck load of trouble. All I'd seen is the pull'n back style - but not both. Good to know! Thank's Mike!
Great video. Very useful.
Thanks for posting this
Thanks for the tips very helpful
thank you so much for your advice
thank you, lol you just fixed my loader on my 1948 Allis Chalmers wd!
Nice video Mike. Do you have a video on setting the range of motion of the 3-pt (not the draft/float control)? On my New Holland TN75a, there is a level on the rear axle housing that sets the range of motion for the 3-point???
good info, keep up the good work. tip to tractor owners, read your owner's manual and maintenance manual every once in a while, lot's of good info in those .
Tip #2 just saved my life!!
You're awesome!!!!! Now my PTO lowers. Hooray!!! I should have subscribed sooner 😊
Thanks! It worked! Problems solved!!
Thank you sir. Such a big help
Thank you! Now I know how to operate the 3 point thourghly!!
Thnaks, Mike! I just subscribed to your channel!
Thank you for excellent maintenance advice. Is there common maintenance issues for specific brands? Again thank you
Big help Mike . TY
Thanks sir for all your help. Thanks
Good video, sometimes you don't know what you don't know!
what a great help..Hi Mike , i have a SAME Laser 110 where about the adjustable knob for my 3 point hitch, it not even goes up plus those three gear levers any manual how to used them, i'm driving a Ford, messy ferguson, Kubota but little knowledge about SAME
PTO shaft on my snow blower works the same way. Spent an hour one time before I figured it out. No hammers or pry bars though.
Wow, I was about to call the service department because my three-point was getting very hard to move up and down on my JD 3033R. Saw your video and found the knob under the seat. It was cranked almost shut. Opened it up and everything works great. I could give you a big kiss. 😀
Thanks, I think!
@@TractorMike Thanks again Mike for your great videos.
Best self help video. Question on three point won’t move issue. Have a HESSTON 80-66. Haven’t ran it for three years starts up,and ran fine. But lift won’t work Yes the knob was screwed all the way in. I opened it and still won’t move. I also had to put 2 gallons of hydraulic oil in. Could the hydraulic valve be frozen from sitting three years. The knob does open and close. Thank you. Cape Girardeau Mo.
Mike, great channel. I've learned so much about my tractor by watching your channel. Being a newbie to tractor ownership your advice has been a life saver. That said, I'm having an issue with my MF 1533. I tractor will not pull in 1,2, or 3. It will only pull forward in 4 low (turtle). I'm trying to figure out to how to determine if I need a new clutch or if this is something I can adjust on the tractor. I don't want to take to the dealership and pay $2k if it's a relatively easy fix. I'm looking for to hearing from you.
John, send me an e-mail at mike@asktractormike.com and I'll try to help you resolve. When you say "not pull" what are you trying to pull?
wondering about changing out the pressure line for the power steering...any videos or info on that would be greatly appreciated.
Mike I almost fell off my stool......my nephew spent one whole after noon trying to remove the tiller on my tractor......I told him to go sit in seat and work the loader valve......10 seconds later had him turn around....never told him how I released it. Kept him from "borrowing" my tractor for months.
Thank you I had a tree fall on my loader and I couldn't get the bucket to tilt it was exactly what you said I had a line barley plugged .in ....
Thank you!!!!!
You are doing a good job helping
Thanks Ernie!
Those are problems which can be difficult for some people and the toughest one for me is connecting the shaft to the PTO on both of my tractors and I have John Deere brand (790 and 3032E) and I just have a problem getting in there where I can hold the shaft with one hand and use my other hand to connect the shaft to my PTO. The other areas are no problem on my tractors. That is why I don't remove my brush hog from my 790 tractor and just use the other tractor for working with my other implements.
Grand video, and I don't even have a tractor (yet)!
Mr. Tractor,
I have a 2130 john deere, recently I had to replace the rock shaft, bushings & seals. When all was said and done started her up and the 3-point lift arms went straight up, only after several hours did they lower. Any input will be greatly appreciated, thanks
Thanks "Tractor Mike".
Thanks for your help was loose connection
GUILTY - of loading up the NH tractor and driving 2 hrs roudtrip to find my prob was that Turtle/Rabbit knob... hardly any videos on tractors for city folk who weren’t raised on a farm/ranch. Latest... seems today like my lift (weight load) capacity is poor on the front loader.
Also, have the same connects to my front bucket you show on the video, wish I knew what to call it and what kind/model fork lift accessory I could put on it if the bucket were removed ...
thanks Mike.I'll do that
I had my CaseIH 30C lockup the 3 point and I grew up on a farm running International harvester tractors lol
Great video! I have a LM35. Less then 200 hours, my shuttle shift is stuck in reverse. everything else works normal. Any suggestions?
I have a Kubota B2910 HST. I will run into a problem occasionally that the loader bucket will not operate as well as my lift for my 3 point hitch will not lift. It happens quits the same time. It is not a consistent thing, probably happened about 4 or 5 times over the last 6 months. Then I fiddle around rocking levers back and forth and aftr a while everything works again. I have changed both transmission filters but it did not fix the problem. There is a suction screen on the hydraulic reservoir could that be the next thing to check. Thought I would ask since I have to drain the system to check the screen. ANY THOUGHTS?
Good video
Almost always it’s something simple. I went nuts trying to replace a boat prop by reverse turning on the shaft. After getting towed back to the dock and getting home, the light went off that it was splined on the shaft. DOH! Moment!
I have a Case 580 coming late 60s it won’t move except every so often it will just kick in and go so it doesn’t seem like it should be the clutch, not very familiar with the system some people say maybe just the filter but I don’t know. Any advice would be appropriate.
Mike I have a jinma 284 tractor the three point is really jumpy going up and some times slams, can you give suggestions
