#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
Rules:

3: No political/religious talk or debate .
4: Any points you make have to be substantiated either in explaining your opinion or when stating facts you need to back these up with reliable sources.

I just had an amazing discussion with a prominent TF2 member, who was able to calmy and rationally argue their perspective, and listen to mine on Discord chat. I have a lot of respect for you Ricky, thanks for stopping by and being able to chat. You can raise issues with my videos and my analysis, but it has to be framed in the context of MY series and WHY I make it in the first place. I realize when you get brigaded elsewhere, many of those aren't viewers so they miss that...but start by reading the description lads!
Literally dead was never the only thing I based my series on, and it's not the only definition of dead anyway. I wasn't just sad or negative in this video either, I still hope and wish for more Titanfall, even if it means mixed into something else (another game). Something I also could have acknowledged (read the room), is that Titanfall 2 had a opposite trajectory where it did better pop wise almost later, than it did at launch (which is very unique). As well that the Xbox servers for TF1 never got fucked up by the hackers, so they were really happy about their experience there.
Also you can absolutely play both Titanfall's on official servers atm, however TF1 is basically dead population wise (except Xbox, which is hard to access as I state in the video). And Titanfall 2 on official, is actually populated enough to get some matches (depending on your region), but don't expect anything besides Attrition (as I also stated).
By your rules, the game is still alive.
1. Literally dead.
-The Game is not dead, you can still play the game.
2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc).
-The player base is still large and are very active on the game that is still active.
3. The company ceased to exist.
-The company is still around and made apex legends. While Titian fall is still active today.

I still play the game, but I would disagree that it doesn’t take long to get into a game. Attrition is still a few minutes at least (depending on time of day), and most other modes are unpopulated.
Please please please do your research before making one of these. Titanfall 2 servers are fully online with little to no issues, and a daily average of 2000, 1500, and 800 players across Steam, Xbox, and PS, respectively.
People saying "well the game is dead and unplayable" because they don't realize it's been fixed are a large part of the reason the game is declining. Because people only ever see clickbait "oh Titanfall is dead" videos like this, and rarely that the game is still up and running.

Videos like this can be an interesting analysis into what happens when IPs are mismanaged and forgotten about, but Titanfall still has a strong community that is still very active with functioning servers, and acting like that isn't the case only discourages potential new or returning players. Just admit you're wrong on that point and try playing yourself.

@@jimmysruffled I think it falls into a same pitfall that Killzone ended up, great looking games and great shooters that couldn't defeat the already know shooters like Doom, COD or BF.
It may be fan favorite and have a very vocal and fateful playerbase, but wont gather enough players from outside, the real players that would buy the game in droves (so called "normies").

@@KeyUSeeCZ unfortunately not the case upper echelon channel documented tf and tf 2 downfall extensively both games online servers were essentially rendered useless due to one man overloading servers with mass amounts of bots making players incapable of actually getting into a multiplayer game. In bad faith EA basically ignored the issue while simultaneously still selling the game at discounted price on steam. To speculate I'd assume it was one of many reasons why they went the live service route to try to prevent the same issue with apex..but given the state apex is in now..we might be repeating history. Would recommend watching his video on the subject.

@@djtoxicdhg EA bought out Respawn right after Titanfall 2 failed and Respawn gave them Apex Legends, one of the biggest live service games right now, the golden goose EA craved. Apex is worth way more than whatever money EA put into the Titanfall IP, multiple times. It's possible that EA saw the potential in Respawn and forced Respawn to sell themselves to EA by sabotaging Titanfall 2. After Titanfall 2 failed, Respawn either closed their studio or getting bought out. EA simply made the decision that Respawn would be worth more than Titanfall2, and they were right.

i usually really enjoy your videos but having been tightly close with titanfall and it's developments over the years, there's so much misinfo and downright incorrect statements in this and watching comments calling you out on it get deleted is really rubbing the wrong way, just take the criticism man
Could you point out what the misinfo was? Do you think you can accuse people of not researching, or not doing their work when you display you didn't do literally any yourself, including just reading the description or actually watching the video?

Edit: Also just because you have 400k subs doesn’t give you the right to act arrogant and confrontational to people calling you out… that’s where the majority of criticism is coming from. You not being able to take other people’s opinions is why others are mad.
A lot of the games covered on this channel are still playable. Dead in this context doesn't mean literally buried and unplayable. Planetside 2, a game he covered recently, still has players, but has been on a downward trend for years.

Yeah, no. Both games, especially the second are playable. The support from the devs may have ended, but the game is definitely still alive.

eh. Titanfall 1 is still playable as the servers are still up, but it also doesn't really have a playerbase so it can be fairly called dead. It's a discord game where you have to join some pre-existing community to play it. It's still possible to play, but I don't think it's unfair to say it's dead.
Titanfall 2 is just blatantly alive though.
Both games are still playable, there are enough people on all TF2 platforms. Servers are fixed and there are no hackers except for one guy who has a little schizophrenic episode every now and again.
Then there are still hackers, as multiple recent reviews have also admitted...So you just lied to say you can still play the game mostly, with a miniscule population? What is the goal here? To emotionally express yourself or what?

I encounter more hackers on average in other games, such as apex, where I’ll encounter several hackers in the same game. Also the game isn’t dead, it has more average players than halo infinite on steam charts, which by your definition from a previously comment, isn’t dead? People are commenting because you’re objectively incorrect but you aren’t admitting your mistake and instead insulting people. You’re making yourself look like an immature child and it’s pretty sad to see. Your content is actually pretty good, but unfortunately your research just wasn’t conducted well enough this time, which is fine. I do understand that you put effort into the video and it makes you money so you wouldn’t want to take it down, instead, changing the first line of the description or pinned comment could be enough.

I played Titanfall 2 with my son last night. I never have to wait to get into a match. Titanfall 2 is the best console shooter there is and it's alive and well.

Only in Attrition, and connections quality can be quite bad. I still play the game, but acting like the servers are well populated is also not true.

I think it's important to note that the launch date for Titanfall 2 wasn't just stuck really close to BF1. It was also flanked on the other side by Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare, a game that shared a lot more similarities in design and appearance to TF2 than BF1 ever did. Respawn/EA doing almost zero marketing for the game and then shoving it out between the 2 biggest shooters of the year guaranteed that TF2 wasn't going to sell. No amount of better gameplay was going to save it at that point.
edit: The game isn't at all dead btw. very active playerbase on Titanfall 2 to this day, and the servers have been fixed and working fine for a while now. Don't let this guy's inability to admit he's wrong sway you; TF|2 doesn't belong on this channel by his own definition.
I only started playing it a few years ago and love it, wish it had been sold to me at it's prime.
So apparently Respawn wanted to just go against COD but battlefield got pushed back to the same date and well you know the rest. Does suck respawn never tried to market the game more, sucks more that respawn alone chose that release date
@@xaldinhunter not really Respawn, but more of EA wanting Titanfall 2 to come out alongside CoD IW and BF1, while not helping them in advertisement. I think this was a case of publisher screwing them up due to unrealistic expectations

Current ways to still play Titanfall
TF1:
- xbox one is your best option. You can buy and disc version. There's lobbies in attrition and sometimes in last titan standing and frontier defense.
- PC is barely playable on attrition, but THE SERVERS HAVE BEEN FIXED FOR +3 YEARS. The issue is, to download the free DLC maps (they were made free in late 2015) you need the deluxe edition for some reason.
- xbox 360 is basically dead, but the community does play sessions every few days. You can only buy this game on the disc version.
- There's a client for PC in development, but its taking its time and won't probably release ever tbh
TF2:
-every version is FULLY PLAYABLE. There are almost no hackers and NO SERVER ISSUES.
-PS4 is the least populated version. It has around 400-800 players connected. Its enough to play most gamemodes in peak times.
-xbox one and vanilla PC have around 1.5-2k players each. With enough patience you can play every single gamemode at any time.
-NORTHSTAR CLIENT HAS 15-30 PLAYERS. ONLY USE NORTHSTAR FOR MODS
-THERE IS CROSSPLAY BETWEEN ORIGIN AND STEAM, PS4 AND PS5, AND XBOX ONE AND SERIES X. BUT NOT BETWEEN PLATFORMS

1. "Literally dead" It is not, as I and many others have stated, this game is alive and well.
2. "Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered." This is also mostly wrong, yes TF|2 has lost a decent percent of the playerbase over the years, but that's over the past 8 years, the game lost players slowly, it never experienced some mass loss of players, and since it's not dead, it has no need to recover.
3. "The company ceased to exist" This is very wrong, Respawn still exists.

For anyone wondering, like nerd slayer mentioned, YOU CAN PLAY TITANFALL 2, the vanilla servers still work apparently, although I would recommend to download the Northstar client if you're on PC since it has a lot more features than what vanilla provides (since they are community servers, and don't rely on official ones, if the official servers ever get ddos-ed again or straight up shut down you will still be able to play on Northstar servers). You still need to buy/have the base game to Northstar though.
Edit: I see people are pointing out that the vanilla servers have been working fine nowadays. I haven't played Titanfall 2 in a few months and even that was on the Northstar servers but either way, I think the client makes the multiplayer more fun and customizable. I fixed my misconception and clarified that the vanilla client also still works.
I thought the ddos stopped a while back and people can now play on vanilla server?
Titanfall 2's vanilla multiplayer is working perfectly fine for the most part, and has been for a decent amount of time.
Northstar is still cool to use though if you want community servers or just an easier time using client-side mods.
Titanfall 1 is also technically playable, its only issues are no players and arguably unsecure servers. Also if you didn't already own it, you'll have to get a key for it, specifically one that includes all the dlc maps if you wanna be able to play with others at all. If you get a group together you can easily play though.
I can still play matches on PS5, so not only on PC

just install vanillaplus and get the best of both worlds lol

It was a game where you could play as a stim fueled spiderman with guns and giant mecha. They traded that for heroes and a slow long game mode.
I mean you can still play it. There's more than enough active players on any platform

@@Bagginsess there might actually be new content on the horizon, a few months ago we got a few shadow dropped updates out of nowhere and it looks like they might do it again
@@EchoNovemberDelter a few patches is not the same as a new game, new maps, new guns, new titans, new campaign, etc. Plus the player base is virtually dead making finding a match in off hours slow. Plus even if you do play you'll be playing with the same small group of people over and over.
I have no idea what you're talking about, when it comes to popularity, because you can still find full matches on consoles and on PC. Now granted removing comments of people disagreeing with you and proving good points is pretty shady and goes against what you're entire Channel seems to be about, it just spreads really bad misinformation and give the channel a bad name, but I'm not here for that. I'm here just to say the game is still pretty active and it's still pretty popular, it's not what it used to be no, but it's still really popular and people still talk about both games. Like you said in the video especially on PC there is such a mod support for the game if it ever is to shut down there is a really good end of life cycle prepared for that. For anyone else wondering you can boot up the game right now play it and have fun with people and it's not that expensive so I do highly recommend the game.

The drama going on behind Titanfall 2's hacking was absolutely insane. The stuff surrounding p0358 could take up an hour-long video by itself.
The apex card left during the last missions feels so weird to look at now. Went from feeling excitement at what that could refer to and where it could lead the story. Now its replaced with feeling sad as it’s what killed the chance for titan fall 3
@@ender_z4nd3r83 It is dead as long as Apex is raking in money. Either Respawn themselves or EA will not allow a portion of the team to move on as long as they can get people to pay for shit in Apex.
TF3 is dead until Apex dies. Then I can promise TF3 will be announced.

If Titanfall 1 had launched with a campaign on the same level of 2 then I think it would have had a significantly bigger impact. Also EA exists.
I played the beta for 1 and lost interest after about 5 hours. Sure being able to run up walls was a fun novelty but it all got old very quick and the titans were moreso annoying to have to deal with than adding anything to the game. Didnt play 2.

Tf1 is unplayable, and tf2 has barely any large number of players as most people left the game because of the years of it being unplayable

What killed the game was its mistakes, and poor handling...you know the things I outlined in the video. This is the first in the Death of a Game series that really hit me. Titanfall 2 Was one of my favorite games on Playstation 4 at the time.

Just putting my hat in the ring here. 2k-3k players is about as much as Guilty Gear Strive, and more then Dragon Ball Fighters (~1.5k), Mortal Kombat 1 (~1.5k), King of Fighters 15 (~500), and Granblue Fantasy Verses: Rising (~500), all of which are some of the biggest fighting games in the world currently, and all of them will be at EVO this weekend, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, as main stage games (except Dragon Ball Fighterz). TF2's player numbers as a niche game with a dedictaed fanbase is amazing, and it's really cool to see it still so beloved by core group of fans to this day. A game doesn't need to have 100,000+ players to still be considered active. I understand that it's your channel and you do what you want with it, but please be respectful of other's passions before you scream at them online.

11:40 just a minor correction: Titanfall never initially launched on Steam. It came out on Origin first before later coming to Steam along with many other select EA titles (like Battlefield and NFS) in 2020.

The Vanilla Multiplayer for TF2 Works really well in my experience I just played a lot of Attrition yesterday.
Sure the numbers arent that high but high enough to find matches in under a minute after 3Pm CEST.
Having AI enemies present was always a big selling point for me, sure they weren’t a challenge of any kind, but it really added to the world and gave you more options for working towards your titan.
It’ll never happen but can’t help but imagine what a Titanfall 3 could have done with this.
The bots weren't supposed to be challenging. They were there both to help players farm points and contribute to the team if they weren't getting kills and to show diegetically just how on another level a pilot was compared to a typical grunt
Plus playing around the bots added near constant diversity to the matches, they are partially there to get you to try and avoid the ground.

The best mech fights, TF2 still playing almost everyday after work since TF2 came out.
I still can play titanfall 1, it’s mostly populated on Xbox one servers only and you can only find games on attrition, though if you don’t have a disk you have to try your luck finding a code online. 360 servers are mostly dead with a small group only playing. PC isn’t as populated as Xbox is but you still can get attrition matches.
Titanfall 2 just recently had a few issues with servers (small hicccups) but the game and its modes are mostly playable. Play station has a low player count with Xbox having the highest. PC vanilla servers are in the middle of both, northstar client that has the lowest player count. Less than 50 iirc. Anyways you can all still play the games but who knows how much longer they may be up.

I mean the game is not really dead, it has thousands of players on every platform and atleast for me in europe i can find an attrition game in 2mins maximum usually, other game modes are harder to find, 5-10minutes. And the servers worked fine even before 2023, but you could randomly be kicked while in the multiplayer menu and people in the main clan named ADV that everyone is put in by default would usually have their games crash. I remember i found this out by moving to ADV a little and then i had to go through a few crashes to select another clan. But that doesn't happen anymore, neither the kicks from the multiplayer menu. I mean, the game is pretty much fine, what is to be expected from an old one... there are usually no hackers in EU and when they are it's the same one or two on pilot vs pilot so the sucker wouldn't die to titans.

Tragedy struck when Battlefield had to be delayed, ending in the infamous release date, and due to marketing deals TF2 couldn’t be delayed from the planned release date.

Titanfall 2 is far from being dead. Yes, respawn mostly abandoned the game and there is no new content, but servers are still up and running fine, some time ago we even got patch with few fixes.
Game has 2000 - 4000 players everyday on steam alone. There is also same version on origin, where most players first bought the game, so there is still big, active community.

2) One of your comments mentions that only Attrition (or only one mode) is playable in TF2, which is also not true. Yes Attrition is the most popular mode (as it is pretty much team deathmatch, so no rules just shoot), but if you search for others you will find them as well - capture the flag, titans only, pilots vs pilots, PvE frontier defence or very popular Bounty Hunt.
If the video was only about first game I would be absolutely fine with it, but TF2 is simply too far from being dead or unplayable. Considering how much the game costs nowadays on steam sales, players shouldn't be discouraged to give it a try

TF2 was literally abandoned by both the developer and publisher, they rewrote the universe out of Apex Legends due to its success, they cancelled a 3rd game, and TF2 currently has a 0.009% of the original population population...which is a very very low amount. It also was outsold by the previous game, and not just because of the launch date (it was a commercial failure).

The campaign story of TTF 2 was nothing special in the greater sense, but for me it was oddly heartwarming. Seeing Cooper and BT bond over the course of their adventure was wholesome . It's a shame we probably will never see a continuation. I love this game.

It has the best level I've ever played in a SP mode for a FPS. The whole segment in cause and effect (was like that in english?) with the time travel mechanic combined with platforming was tightly implemented and creative.
.. well have to agree to disagree - the simple connection between coop and BT (like your referring too) is more world/relationship/story building then we get in 90% of modern day games.. this game felt like gaming use to feel.. i loved it, and felt bummed out that the industry had me so burnt out prior to its release that i personally slept on it.. phenominal game.
I genuinely think most people had so much fun on the time-hop and factory-floor level they forgot how good those levels were. Try play it again and you might notice some real hail-mary moments that warm you up to it.

It's people like you that make people not want to try the games in the first place. The servers are fixed and have been fixed on all platforms(for titanfall 2, just to make that clear). The video you have presented is basically a big nothing burger except for the beginning and the end with maybe some spice in the middle, but mostly the middle is just reiterating already known issues and complaints. Titanfall 2 is perfectly well right now. Queue times are 3-10 minutes, no hackers or messed up servers, heck, they even put double xp on for everyone right now. Double xp is manual, btw, so someone at Respawn is doing it.

I actually tried to get into this game recently like a few weeks ago. Servers were either dead or filled with sweaty pro players which made it hard for me to learn the game and have it be enjoyable. Shame it’s gotten to this, I heard such good things about it. But, yeah it suffers from the Chivalry, Battlefield, Mordhau problem where the games still have players, but the only ones around are sweaty pros, so in reality it’s dead as no new players can join.
The game is still very much alive, and has a consistent player base of around 2000 players on steam, and that's not including origin which isn't tracked on steam charts. This player base has stayed extremely consistent since Titanfall 2 releasing on steam in 2020 with periodic surges during steam sales. People have obviously moved on to other games the past 8 years since Titanfall 2 released, and the fact it's managed to maintain a consistent amount of players for the latter half of that time is a testament that the game is maintaining players and replacing ones that leave, therefore it's not dead and never had a mass exodus it didn't recover from.
I can agree that Titanfall 2 is dead in the sense that it's just on life support, living off the hope that Respawn will pay attention to it again someday. It will inevitably lose all of its players some day, but so will every game that hits a decade since it released and only received one year of extra content. But in the sense of "can you currently find matches on Titanfall 2 in a reasonable time?", yes you can. Attrition will get you matches in a couple seconds, but you can relatively easily find a match in any game mode with a 3-5 minute wait.
The fair consensus to make is whether or not Titanfall 2 is dead is purely semantic and left to how you want to define dead. By your own qualifiers in the description, which are admittedly a little too vague, the game is not dead. By the standards of Titanfall's active community, the game is not yet considered dead and is fairly playable across all platforms, though Xbox and Playstation are anecdotal and there's no real statistic to verify that in the same way steam charts does. If we define dead as in abandoned by the devs, then yes, the game is dead.

The title of this video is fake news and sensationalism... Titanfall 2 is very much alive. My daily game time is spent on Titanfall 2. My favourite mode is LTS, and there are always new players to play against. Sometimes the wait for this game mode is longer than I'd like, but other times it's fast. There's always attrition games going constantly, if I can't get into LTS.
You have no idea what the series is about, and just joined with the Titanfall subreddit brigading. Also notice your last sentence again...cleverly not mentioning most if not all, can't get anything BUT attrition. Why even have to lie or obfuscate? It wasn't EA. EA actually wanted TF3 and it was in the works. Then the respawn itself just decided to scrap the game (in secret) and make a Battle royale (because it was easier to follow the trend, instead of solving issues for the tf1 and tf2 mp problems). They shot the shot and hit - making Apex Legens. EA was happy with a new cash cow and respawn didn't get burned to the ground.
There is an interview with narrative lead of tf3 that confirms it.

I played Titanfall 1 on PC so much 9-10 years ago, partook in the open beta as well but it just pains me to see Respawn and EA abandon it.

It's so sad, this is the fps movement game everyone really wants but they'll never get the chance to really get into it. Titanfall 2 was a game ahead of its time

I used to play Apex Legends, in hopes that it’s success would lead to another Titanfall.
5 years later: I stopped playing Apex Legends a year ago, Respawn cancelled a Titanfall game and there’s no hope for a new game in the series.

good vid! only thing i found wrong was the thing about the servers. the vanilla servers are fine, and you wont have a problem getting into a match. NorthStar has 100 players at a time, and is only good for mods now ): . but, I'm guessing that you made this script a bit ago, as the servers only came back last year. other than that though, was pretty good!

As much as it hurts not to have Titanfall 3, I'm also glad it's not going to release in the current times. It's just going to be another shooter primarily focused on how to fill the game to Brim with Mtx, battlepasses. Less focus on story/what made people love TF2 would just be ignored

The best way to keep titanfall alive is to make art and play with friends. It's why I made the New Frontiers series and encourage others to continue making their titanfall passion projects!
Thanks to some Apex legends battlepass bullshit, Titanfall 2 is experiencing a small resurgence. Very happy about that. :)
