#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
    Rules:
1: No discrimination or hate speech.
2: No affiliation links that do not belong to nerdSlayer.
    3: No political/religious talk or debate .
4: Any points you make have to be substantiated either in explaining your opinion or when stating facts you need to back these up with reliable sources.

Reminder for the YT comment warriors not brave enough to argue on voice or text direct on Discord.gg/nerdslayer or Twitter/nerdslayerg... If you want to respond to these points, I will gladly accept in voice chat, or on Discord (private or public chat). No where else, because communication is not meant for this platform, nor people brigading posts without actually making arguments and feeling they won some sort of moral victory. (Did you know I don't get notifications? Especially on post replies to replies? I literally can't see them unless I click the chain down and look.)
No you can collect that moral victory when you don't join the Discord to debate me about things you are supposedly so emotionally charged about you can't make basic arguments about it. I will be waiting :). It doesn't have to be contentious either.
Here's some rapid fire facts you can chew on and choose to be emotional about if you want (it doesn't dispute the point). AOE2 on JUST steam alone has more players than SC2. Not counting the Xbox APIs. SC1 in JUST Korea alone, has more players than all of the other regions in both Starcraft's. SC1 has ran more tournaments in the past 5 years I can count.
SC2 has less players competitively, than multiple indie MP titles, and 20+ year old MP titles. SC2 has actually only lost players in the past 6 years with the past 4 being heavy churns (10k players lost in NA alone in customs), in both the custom games community, and the competitive ladder.
SC2 has had 1 update, in 1.5 years and has had 5 in the past 5 years. SC2 hasn't had an expansion in 9 years, a co-op mission in 6, and new content period in that time.
A dead game is defined as a game that died literally, had a mass exodus/failed expectations, or the company died. SC2 had a mass exodus of players from the OG 6+ million copies sold, and being on top of both YT and Twitch most watched charts. It's also dead in 4th definition of the word, where the game clearly has no new content and hasn't had some for over half a decade. It only receives maintenance mode updates. All of these qualifiers more than well enough qualify the game under my criteria, and the criteria of the word "death'...just not literal death, the only one most people seemed to cling on to when trying to attack my arguments (basically displaying they aren't genuine actors). You can say you feel the game isn't dead based on literality all you want... without being delusional at the current state of it. Otherwise we get brigaded comments with no arguments :( :(
    ----
    Arguments used against me?
    "But the game's not dead'
Watch the series, read the description, or just pay attention to this video in particular...I make this claim based on multiple things you can't just hand wave based on feelings, and your ignorance of how words, arguments, and analysis work.
"But there is a tournament with big middle eastern washed money coming"
Cool, it is decried by the majority of eSports experts, is ran by horrible organizers (both in history and integrity), and does FUCK all to actually help the professional scene (build and support infrastructure).
"But SC2 is still the most popular RTS".
As I said above, no it isn't you weird Blizzard fanboy. AOE has existed for ages dude, and has been out performing StarCraft for a long time.
"But nerd you are a Stormgate shill"
I never even claimed the game was good...I just tested it and decided to give away some copies...da fuc?
"But nerd I made a funny about you being sponsored secretly"
Accusing me of fraud based on my career and integrity, is not funny. Sorry not sorry. I don't think me accusing you of fraud in your work place would be that funny either for the record.
"But nerd, you were a meany head"
If you see me display that, and genuinely feel I am totally off base file a report on my Discord with my mods or myself directly. We will 100% take you seriously...the thing is, I wrote my rules to be where I have license, with this being my channel and all, to make fun of people who weren't worth my time. These are described as people who aren't genuine, ad hom me first, ignore the rules of the establishment (yes I have them), or demonstrate in an obvious way they didn't watch the video. If you fail to follow the rules and respect me and my content, I don't feel the need to coddle or be nice to you...when you clearly didn't see the need to respect me or my content. And for the nicety tone policing that's going on in comment replies or from people who watch my videos but feel that means they know me, fuck off. Kindly. I think tone policing idiots or disrespectful people is a net loss for everyone, me included.

arcade was the biggest let down of sc2 lol, no individually hosted lobbies meant only the most popular maps ever got hosted. there was no incentive to make new maps and the scene never even came close to sc1 or wc3's. the next big rts will be the one that does UMS/CUSTOM/arcade correctly and revives the scene.

    Hello there,
I was one of the writers for teamliquid, covering SC2 esports.
You ommited a few details regarding SC2, although I guess it was to be expected as to not make the video a 1 hour essay xD. It was controversial from the beginning.
First problem, in the early days, the map design was terrible, the rush distance between main bases was very, short leading to many all-ins and frustrating games.
But they also had other design issues, like the edges of the maps being very large, making air harass and drops very easy to execute and hard to deal with, or the minerals sometimes being oriented towards the enemy, leading to some very strong and hard to deal with sieges.
But the later problems were free units. Zerg have this unit called the Infestor, which would could spawn infested terrans for 25 energy a pop, and no cooldown. After the rushing phase of the game was over, zergs pretty quickly learned that massing infestors was very strong. In addition zerg have fungal growth, which, at the time was a point and click ability, with pretty long range, which would root any units hit by it.
As such infestors provided damage and control when massed. However, zerg also had another extremely powerful late game flying unit called the Brood Lord. The BL would spawn a broodling with each long range auto-attack, effectively creating their own meatshield in the process. And as you can imagine when these two units were combined it made for a nigh unbeatable end game.
The meta at the time was dominated by zergs, all the favorites for all tournaments were always the top zergs, and it lead to very stale games as Terran and Protoss had no late game counters, they either had to all-in or die a very excruciating late game.
Blizzard didn't address this meta till the release of Heart of the Swarm, where they traded one bad meta for another. As such a lot of us have a very strong aversion towards free units to this day.
But SC2 also had a lot of design flaws which where discussed at length for years.
In BW the most efficient mining economy is having 1 worker per mineral patch, in SC2 its 2 workers. Also maps got standardized to mostly have 8 mineral patches per base.
While the difference seems small it hard profound effects, in BW the best economy involves having as many bases as possible, ideally 6. This lead to a lot more action and multi-tasking, as there was always a base you could attack, a chink in the opponents armor which could be exploited. It also lead to healthier action as, having the economy so spread out meant one attack was very rarely lethal.
In SC2, its very common for players to turtle on 3 active bases and only expand when their earliest base gets close to mining out, which leads to staler games.
There is also an argument to be made about SC2, just being too efficient for its own good. The pathfinding in SC2 is so good that you frequently have deathballs, and can actually lose your entire army in 3 seconds off inattention.
Despite the fact BWs aoe was stronger, it was somehow more skillful and fair to use and counter and I can give two examples off the top of my head.
In BW the Protoss High Templar has a bigger AOE and more damage on their Psi-Storms. However, in BW, if you order all your HT to storm one area, they all will do it, potentially wasting a lot of damage and energy, in SC2 you will get one storm at a time.
This leads to the need for the Protoss in SC2 to invest more micro into their AOE, making it more skillful, but also allows time and for their opponent to also react and counter-micro.
In BW if you drop a zealot in range of 20 siege tanks, all 20 will shot, in SC2 the game calculates in the back-end how many shots you need to kill a zealot, usually around 5, and only 5 tanks will fire. In BW this resulted in a lot more skill expression as you could counter tanks by dropping units on top of them, making the shoot each other, or baiting shots before going in with the bulk of the attack. It also forced the Terran to be a lot more aware in how he spread his tanks, and to dedicate more energy towards it. In SC2 you don't get as much of this due to how smart they are.
So, sorry for going on a huge tangent, but the TL:DR is, SC2's design was controversial from the start and continued to be so long into its future, and its probably a reason why it was never as popular with Korea as its earlier counterpart.
For my part, while I can say that SC2 was the easier game to play, (I also got to masters rank for 2 seasons), I think BW is the better designed game, flaws and all.
Overall good video though, you hit on the major pain points, like the tournament structure, balancing, region locking etc 😁

SC2 is way harder to play, way way harder. Not stated by me, stated by Koreans pro legends. BW is not better designed than SC2. Is incredible flawed (I still love it to my core) and was never conceived for competitive play (SC2 was, that is the definition of better design), and I can go on and on on why is better designed but is not relevant.
BW is only bigger in Korea and got the support from decades to do so, SC2 is bigger in the rest of the world, there are top tiers European players that are really young, if Activision-Blizzard had a brain they will put a little more money, revamp the campaigns, adding more stuff at least twice a year, change the monetization to be more tuned with cosmetics, promote tournaments and do what simple "peasants" mods with only donations are doing, (like the BW units, that is unbalanced now but is amazing).
SC2 is still to this day the best competitive e-sport to watch good players play, is not even close. Even with the pile of shit that blizzard is nowadays and the lack of support, the game is that good and has a lot more potential if well handled.
Edit: also another big point that I miss to comment to solidify the better design. SC 2 still looks good to these day, the optimization is crazy. There was a lot of RTS games that had been released in the 14 years that have passed since SC2 debut that aged poorly and look bad after a couple of years, also they cannot hold a candle in gameplay also (path recognition, maps, hud, etc).
Te conclusion is that the game is objectively better in every aspect, it "failed" to be a top tier mainstream game because is too hard and because it didn't receive the support others games had. This Blizzard that handles SC2 is not the same Blizzard that handled BW.

@@SebastianHackeado Yeah. I respect SC:BW a lot as the game that really popularized esports and RTS, but the game being "harder" because of technological limitations at its time is not the "healthy kind" of difficulty (i understand it's not intentional, but still).
AoE and spellcasting is way stronger in SC2 because units got smarter and naturally clump, so their damage ceiling needs to be reduced and now there is more skill involved in splitting your units to avoid such natural clumping if you are to respect AoE. All of these are naturally pathing/AI improvements and you're not trying to do things outside of the box just to make a Dragoon walk up a ramp in a straight line. Is that harder? Sure it is, but in a game revolving around both real time and strategy you shouldn't be spending so much time battling a flawed AI just to get a unit to walk straight.

    • @Ole_Rasmussen
      @Ole_Rasmussen Місяць тому +6

There is a microscopic variance in how long a unit takes to fire again. This tiny difference isn't felt, but that's how the game "calculates" (it doesn't) how many shots it takes. The tanks "secretly" fire one by one but so quickly we don't notice, and then stop firing when the target is dead, leading to the assumption that the game calculates how many shots it takes. I believe this was explained on the bnet forums

The game offered a lot of content, the best quality of life of any RTS ever (UI, pathfinding). It has been supported for 10 years before being shelved. It's easy to learn, hard to master. And there's tons of community-made content, from the SC1 remake Mass Recall to the coop versions of the campaigns. I replay through the campaigns every year and play coop regularly.

It wasn't a success in Blizzard's eyes, because of the amount of return didn't match the investment in their eyes.
The game is set up to release content endlessly, but it's been on a skeleton crew for _years_ now. When was the last time they released anything worth mentioning? It's frankly in the same boat as HotS.

@@StolenTheifHow is SC2 not easy for newcomers ? It literally has the best tutorial of any RTS game. Starts with minimum interface, teaches how to select units. After that it teaches basic macro with Terran, then Zerg and finally Protoss. All in the form of a mini-campaign. Takes less than 15 minutes.
Then you have the campaigns themselves. WoL starts slowly with a cool story and basic missions.

AoE2 actually has a lower population than SC1, let alone SC2, let alone both combined. Blizzard not releasing their player numbers lead to these types of misconceptions. Otherwise, some good points have been made in the video and it is cool that you used the video to promote Stormgate :)
Edit: Since my answer isn't going through for some reason I will copy-paste my reply as an edit.
I don't know why you made the assumption that you played SC2 more than me or that I wouldn't have receipts but anyway.
For SC1, it is quite easy actually. You log in to battle net at Korean prime times and see that it has over 25k concurrent players logged in to its servers. That's about the same or slightly higher than what AoE2 is getting (DE + HD combined) these days. You can maybe argue that AoE2 also has some players on Game Pass but SC1 players don't even count those who are playing the campaign, single player skirmish or hanging out in the main menu. At best, we can say they have similar player numbers. What you said about AoE2 having more players than SC1 and SC2 combined is clearly false just from these numbers.
For SC2, Blizzard used to hold summits with content creators and provide additional info. TotalBiscuit said that during one of these summits, devs mentioned SC2 had 2 million monthly active users. That's in 2017 but shortly after that summit, SC2 switched to F2P and actually show an increase in playerbase. Someone on reddit did some calculations when Blizzard was sharing more info on the client and came up with the number that SC2 had around 60k concurrent players without counting co-op:
    www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/6w5lku/updated_starcraft_player_count/
And co-op is the most popular mode as mentioned several times by StarCraft 2 devs. We don't know about co-op numbers but since then, ladder playerbase has remained mostly stable:
    sc2pulse.nephest.com/sc2/?season=60&queue=LOTV_1V1&team-type=ARRANGED&us=true&eu=true&kr=true&cn=true&bro=true&sil=true&gol=true&pla=true&dia=true&mas=true&gra=true&page=2&type=ladder&ratingAnchor=5638&idAnchor=272715207&count=7#stats-day
So it stands to reason that those numbers would be similar today. Co-op numbers might have dipped as that mode relies on new content but the numbers didn't include co-op anyway.
These numbers show that SC2 is clearly still the most popular RTS (I am hoping that changes soon with Stormgate's release). I don't expect you to be so familiar with one specific game and have all of this info. I wasn't being critical and was trying to correct one factually incorrect statement in your video and I was trying to be as nice as possible since I like your content. Cheers!

Some advice - always a bad idea to force content simply because you need a strawman for an ad or can't figure any other way to hit an upload cycle. You can see from your replies to the comments that you have emotionally invested into your preconceived conclusion, while a large part of the viewer-base disagrees. This is alienating viewers who would otherwise be repeat customers for you, and new viewers like me who have not yet subscribed and just found you, all for some ego insecurity issue and/or some need to justify shilling Stormgate (another game I like, btw). It's much healthier for your long-term channel goals to be honest and upfront, if this is an ad you can just say so at the beginning and jest about whatever game you want being "dead" after and no one will be put-off. But you have to at least get your numbers right, and you completely botched that element. This is a common theme for mid-tier creators just trying to force content out. Anyway, take it or leave it.

Scarlett winning IEM Katowice 2018, Total Biscuit's Shoutcraft Kings monthly tourneys, HAS vs Serral, Kiwian's livestreams, MCanning's video campaigning to be the US Contender for NationWars are just a few of my favorite memories. I think the game failed for a few reasons, but the primary reason i think, is that in the last decade of introduction of mobile gaming, as well as the increased popularity of short matches in many games; to encourage more games played by players, while SC matches can run a bit longer; and the skill ceiling is incredibly hard, and many of my friends, for example, don't play SC2, and never did, and never will, as they think the game is too hard.
The failure of the WCS was also a great detriment to the popularity of the game.
Also, that pet in WoW that made more money in sales than they ever made off of SC2; which is a real bummer.
RIP SC2; you still are a great game. Let's hope that Stormgate or ZeroSpace can hold it down and bring back RTS to more players.

It's a great, finished game that I have very fond memories from, both from the competitive events and playing the campaign. It's like a good tv series that has a few great season and a memorable send off. On the other hand I don't have any memories from LoL, even though I played it more. The game went into so many circles, back and forth changes that at this point they seem meaningless, and are done only for the sake of it with no real goal at the end. I do remember the swarm hosts domination era because it was special, one of a kind thing. One great thing needs to end so you can invest your time into another great thing. I have to keep reminding myself that there are people who think that StarCraft 2 is a PvP game first with campaigns as an afterthought.
As for me, the campaigns are the bread and butter of StarCraft, and I really don't care about the multiplayer, except for the co-op mode.
For people like me, StarCraft 2 never "died" because they finished the campaigns, and I can replay those whenever I want.

Going to be honest I don't think he has as much passion for these videos anymore and has been coming off as if he dislikes his own fanbase, or the natural fanbase a gaming channel acquires. Of course thats ultimately a guess, but the quality, length, and strength of arguments in his videos, as well as arguments left on the weigh side, I think its all getting to him. He probably awakes to dozens if not hundreds of comments from various fan boys from across the gaming sphere, many of them may not even be subbed or frequent his videos/complete his videos before commenting. Im sure years of this stuff gets to people, but ultimately this is not a good look. I hope whatever is driving this negative endeavor is resolved soon. • @phaneros
    @phaneros Місяць тому +8

I'd say this is generally good analysis, but calling sc2 "dead" is a bit of a reach. It remains the most popular RTS and was so popular during its peak that it kind of prevented any other RTS from gaining too much traction because nothing could compete. I'd say the only "mass exodus" was around Heart of the Swarm with the stale meta, though that was recovered from -- known concrete player numbers were at their highest in 2018. The tournament scene is still going strong, melee queue times are still low -- more than can be said about most 7 year old games, never mind 14 year old ones -- co-op and arcade game modes are still incredibly popular and probably why sc2 player counts are at the top or near the top of all RTS. You're also neglecting talking about the single-player and modding scenes, which have seen a massive resurgence in the last 5 years between CCM, Twitch Trolls Grant, Nightmare Mode, Synergy's race-swaps and Azeroth Reborn, Archipelago, the big outpouring of Chinese overhaul mods, etc.
"Dead" has been a common phrase for melee-only people getting frustrated with less frequent balance patches and loss of Blizzard support, but in many game modes sc2 is gaining players or holding relatively steady, not losing them.

    • @nerdSlayerstudioss
      @nerdSlayerstudioss  Місяць тому

It is NOT the most popular RTS, and anyone telling you that is literally delusional. Blizzard fanboys, stop pretending AOE hasn't been dominating you for decades losers. Not to mention you conveniently ignored the majority of the arguments I made.

    • @phaneros
      @phaneros Місяць тому +12

@@nerdSlayerstudioss I admit I haven't reviewed numbers recently, and Blizzard stopped posting them so the GGG video on "The next big RTS will fail" used extrapolation to get some numbers. But I think it's inarguable that it was the most popular RTS around WoL, likely was the most popular (definitely top 3) around the 2016-~2018 time, and even today is probably top 3 going by user counts.
I don't think my argument depends on sc2 being the very top, though, it works just fine if it's top 3 or top 5 which I think is a fair assumption. As I said, tournaments continue, queue times are low, the arcade is full of lobbies, streamers still stream, and new mods are still being made and attracting audiences. I've personally experienced the growth of CCM and Archipelago being in those discords. All this tells me that sc2 is not in a death spiral right now. And I wouldn't call this level of playerbase and community engagement any kind of failure for a 14-year old game; sc2 is only "dead" specifically if you focus on either developer abandonment (which may be a positive for the community, given Blizzard's recent state) or focus solely on melee 1v1 benchmarked against eSports, which is how a minority of players experience the game. Not every game has to be an eSport, and sc2 frankly is more fun away from that business in my experience. Dropping that standard easily leaves sc2 a standout success gamefeel-wise even much later.
As for ignoring your arguments, I don't think I did. I saw further down someone else posted disagreement and criticized the use of the word "dead", you responded by saying the definition was in the description, and thus I targeted my argument at your description definition. The game isn't "literally dead", I can play it and there's other players in lobbies and on ladder. Blizzard still exists. Therefore, the only condition you can be building your argument towards is that the game had a mass exodus of players and never recovered, and I am arguing against that. Player numbers are doing fine, the mass exodus you identify in your analysis is around Heart of the Swarm with Swarm Host meta, and I pointed out that exodus was recovered from -- game numbers were higher in 2018 than 2014, ergo recovery. CCM only became a thing circa 2019~2020, and that's been the heart of the game for many people, that's after your identified exodus. I didn't state this initially, but I'll also point out that while you say many pros retired during and after HotS, many new ones joined the scene. I don't even follow the pro scene all that much, but even I can tell you that Dark, Reynor, Clem, Serral, Maxpax, Rogue, Neeb, Scarlett, etc are all big deals and highly skilled players that draw fanbases and crowds. Checking their liquipedia pages, they've got ton of events and roles dated to well into the 2020s. It's not my cup of tea, but from a distance this kind of hype screams anything but "dead".
I should clarify I don't really have a horse in this game. I don't care for the pro scene, I don't play ladder often and when I do it's 2v2, I'm here for single-player and don't really care too much if people say the pro scene is dead. This isn't an "aoe vs sc, there ain't enough room for the 2 of us in this genre" situation, we can all enjoy the games we like. I can't say I'm a regular viewer, but the way you've responded in the comments has definitely been worrying, and I hope you're doing okay. I don't mean to ruffle feathers by posting my own perspective, I was more so looking to see if you or others in the comments had more to add with their own experiences, particularly with non-melee/pro gamemodes. I hope I didn't come across as another person yelling "you're wrong" in a comment section, and if I did I think it's best we leave this thread here. That said, calling me "literally delusional", "pretending AOE hasn't been dominating me", and "ignoring the arguments you made" doesn't encourage me to come back.

The game is hardly dead, since it has a healthy and active playerbase, and an active competitive scene, even after 14 years. Sure it doesn't match to Brood War and Blizzard has abandoned support, but that still doesnt mean the game is dead, it's just in maintenance mode.
Also, many of the arguments you make could be made for Warcraft 3 back in 2017, before the announcement of Reforged, yet that game was hardly dead. To me, this video's thesis and conclusion seems more like your own personal grudge with Sc2 and Blizzard, rather than an unbiased finding. I was one of the weird players that played more Co-op and custom arcade games. It was some of the best times working with other people as probes to work on our own tower defense. Co-op was my bread and butter and I always enjoyed helping carry those in need through difficult missions to help level up their commanders. Particularly during covid when they allowed players to be any commander for free for a time.
The learning curve was what kept me from staying too long. I had not participated in the main multiplayer much knowing my own weaknesses as a player, and the general skill level of the people I would be up against would be a frustrating at best.
