  • Is BT overwhelmingly likeable? Yes. Is it better than you think? Yes!
    The first bit of the video lays the groundwork, and the rest hopefully brings it all together. I'll mention more of this in the pinned comment, but as I was making final edits/renders to the video, I realized just how much I missed. Lots of really good stuff in this campaign, just a bunch of good moments that I missed. At this point, I just needed to finalize a video, but I definitely might revisit some of this stuff in the future for a higher quality, more insightful video. Also sorry for mic pops

    Thank you for watching! Like and subscribe if you’d like, but more importantly, give me your feedback in the comments below. This is my first video of this sort, so criticism is appreciated (I tried my best to get rid of mic pops, I’ll have a higher quality mic soon.) More notes from me below:
    This video went through lots of changes. It originally was just a review of the Titanfall campaign, then it morphed into how Jack Cooper is supported by BT, then I decided to just focus on BT. Nearing the final stages of video creation, I kept seeing more and more parts from the campaign that were just as good, if not better, than the ones I mentioned. At this point, I really just wanted to make a finalized video and did not feel good about further delays, but this is definitely a topic I might revisit in the future to make a higher quality video.
    Thanks for watching!

      I dislike that you didn't go over the one moment after the credits that shows Jacks helmet blinking and when deciphered, it says "Jack?" implying that BT or some part of him survived. This is a crucial note as earlier in the campaign when Jack starts warping through time, BT has to register part of his AI into Jacks helmet to maintain communications with him even when he is jumping through time.

    Another thing that I think a lot of people missed from Lastimosa was when Cooper was in the simulation, Cooper was hesitant to actually call down a titan of his own, to which Lastimosa responded, “Relax Cooper, it’s just a simulation.” So when Lastimosa dies, the second to last thing he said was, “This is the real thing…” I don’t know, this was just a neat detail I found and it just adds another level of depth to the characters and how Cooper responds to the situation.

    For his last scene, the other dialogue option drives home the point of BT lying. Jack asks "Do WE have a way out of this one?" And BT only says "Calculating" because he knows that only Jack will make it out but doesn't want to tell him that by saying no, or making a false promise and saying yes. BT is not only aware of Cooper's emotions and how he'd react to BT sacrificing himself, but BT also makes the emotional decision to basically lie to his partner in order to make sure he can save Cooper.

    • @Midz-

    The delay of BT revealing the third protocol in the HUD may have been a narrative device to add impact to his sacrifice. But I would like to think that he intentionally glitched out the text to deny Jack even the thought of BT sacrificing himself and eventually, taking the one chance of resisting him in the last second when BT grabs him by surprise. He really wanted to save Cooper, whether he wanted to or not.

    • @Midz-

    I'm not sure if any comment said this, but one thing that's also important to note is the "rerouting link to os v18.723X" which is Jack's helmet, and then the subsequent "uploading" which hopefully means that BT was able to fully upload his AI into his helmet, as well as the partial AI functions in "effect and cause" mission. the line "I will not lose another pilot" hits SO much harder than BT's final sacrifice
    Probably because unlike all others, its an entirely selfish and sentimental one
    At all points it lines up with protocol to protect cooper, except for that last point where it may be what led the arc to getting captured
    Its the one line that is fully and unmistakably, human.

    • @Midz-
      @Midz-  5 місяців тому +5

    An interesting note on BT's statement of "Cooper is my pilot." While I agree with what your interpretation, that he is possessive of Jack at this time - I hear the line in a different way. The emphasis for me is like this "Cooper IS my pilot." .
    I really like this because it makes his objection so much more poignant. Like you mentioned, he's a robot and must abide to the miliary protocol and Sarah states that he'll be transferred a fully qualified pilot.
    He retorts, pretty much saying that Jack Cooper IS a qualified pilot. In few words, he gives a Jack authenticity with his support, stats to back it up and says it all in a way that in his mind - was a clear and obvious conclusion. To further BT's point, he places you in his cockpit to demonstrate to Sarah how much Jack belongs there.
    Its interesting to see also how in the TitanFall universe, there's consideration from Sarah to take in BT's opinion. In other mediums, Ai/Robots are almost always relegated to having statements due to their logical nature and often even if they do have opinions- are brushed off (See C3PO or Jarvis). So to see a commanding officer weigh an Ai's opinion is an interesting insight on how all these titans are treated. Not only as pieces of military hardware, but as 'beings' that have compatibility with users.
    So all in all, a mix of both.
    Cooper IS my pilot.
    and
    Cooper is MY pilot.

    • @Midz-
      @Midz-  5 місяців тому +10

      Very cool analysis. In my video, vocally, I do stress the “my” in that phrase, but I totally agree with you. From BT, it is definitely “Cooper IS my pilot.” And yes, it’s definitely logically sound which checks out for an AI, but also it has some almost sassy attitude/emotion as well.
      Also yea, something I noticed but did not point out is how BT put Cooper in his cockpit during that combo. I agree, it is a showcase of how the two belong to each other. But I also think it is another example of BT being sassy (and perhaps almost confrontational.)
      Your point about AI characters being brushed off is an interesting observation. And yea, I can think of plenty examples where that is the case, so it is interesting how Briggs hears BT out. At the moment, I am working on another titanfall vid (will be out by the end of the year), but I am also brainstorming some sort of “AI characters in video games,” because there is a lot of interesting stuff here, and that is a good point.
      Thanks for the cool analysis, and thanks for watching!

    Awesome video! 14:43 if you notice, the titan Cooper calls down it's not a random titan, but FS-1041, the one that should have been assigned to him once he finished his pilot training. In the gauntlet, you can see its name while it falls down after you call it in. I think it's a cool detail since at that point Cooper is officially a pilot and is able to operate the titan that he should have piloted since the beginning.

    "Where the origin, the development, and the end of a character leaves the consumer in shambles. They have an emotional impact with the magnitude of real-life relationships."
    That's about as essential an encapsulation of the Empathy Effect as I think human language can achieve.
    And you're right. That *is* how it feels. When you connect with someone, even if they're just a character in a book, and you go through something with them, at their side every step of the way...that's a bond not easily broken. That's a person, even if they're just imaginary. That's a friend. And you hope you never have to lose them. Because that pain isn't imaginary.
    Stupid people call that crazy, that you're in a fantasy world, but they've never been there. They've never walked that lonesome road, been in that foxhole, bled and cried and *hurt* with someone, real or otherwise. They've never been someone's war buddy, their brother or sister. They've never *shared* a life.
    When you talked about this, I wasn't thinking so much of BT as I was of Blackjack from Fallout: Equestria - Project Horizons. Because that's how I feel about her. Her friends in the story, too, to a degree, but mostly her. Because going through her life as her witness, I couldn't help but form a bond. Because I wasn't just witnessing, I was sharing the experience. And it hurt. Her life *hurts.* But I don't regret having experienced it. For all the sadness, and pain, and tears, I treasure that experience, because it enriched me, even though thinking back on it makes my heart clench with dread at the memory of everything she went through. Fictional or not, I went through that with her. She's my war buddy.
    And I hope everyone out there can find theirs, somewhere. It'll hurt - but it's worth it.

      I was not familiar with the Empathy Effect, but after looking in to it, thank you for your comment. I agree. Respawn really expertly crafted this story to really drive home the connection between you and BT. In game, BT is just metal and expertly organized electronics. In real life, he is just pixels on a screen. Still, you are together every step of the way on an important journey.
      I think that is the beauty of art. Books, movies, games are important because of these sorts of experiences. For me (and many others), Arthur Morgan from Red Dead was specifically touching.

    While I know the "Take care of him" request is left ambiguous as to who's being told, I think the eyes rolling back was a deliberate choice. I've watched the scene over and over maybe twenty times, and his eyes are skyward when he starts to speak that line.
    Taking this into account with BT looming over both of them in the scene, I'm almost 100% certain that Lastimosa is talking to BT before he collapses.

    So this was the first TRUE first person shooter campaign experience I had ever had. I’d played reach many years before but didn’t understand the story, but this campaign. This was THE campaign I first understood, I think I was like 16 or so (21 now) and I distinctly remember it was a cold snowy Saturday sometime near February or March. I had a little 720p tv set up in the storage room because the internet was awful in mine and this was the closest I could get to the modem, Xbox on a little wooden table and a wooden chair I sat in. I think I stopped playing once for all of 5 minutes to say bye to my dad leaving for work but other than that played all the way through. I sat there staring at the end credits all the way through. Having no way to respond to what I just experienced. A truly pivotal point in my life was just created and I for once knew it. No other campaign has compared and I am now spoiled for games. Titanfall 2 has always and forever will be my favorite game. I’ll see y’all on the frontier, Pilots. Now stand by for Titanfall.

      @@Midz- E3N and BT-7274 are the only two AI characters to ever make me cry. I have autism and have had a long, hard road learning that my communication has an emotional aspect and not just a technical, definitive aspect. Seeing BT and Ethan makes me extremely emotional because I see a person filled with emotion and with no mechanism to express it. I get to see a character who loves someone and has no ability to show them other than through their actions and the definitive, denotative meaning of their words. No feelings, no hugs and kisses, no tears, no vocal cords to crack.
      They feel the same amount as the people around them, but are without any ability to physically feel it.
      They can't cry when they're sad, their guts don't tremble in fear, their skin doesn't burn with rage.
      They feel and think, but can only act and speak.
      So when I see those two characters living and dying not only because of their programming, but because of the dragon-slaying, self-sacrificing love they have for others, it hits me way harder than anyone else I've ever played the games with.
      They are the only characters I relate to in that way.

    It maybe pure copium, but I don't think all hope is lost for BT coming back. There is that famous or infamous (depending on how you look at it) post credit scene where Cooper's helmet flashes multiple times. People on the internet found out that it was a morse code which when decrypted translates to "jack?". At first I thought that this might have been a plot hole or an as pull done by the devs so they can have BT back in another installment (which has sadly not been confirmed to come) but then i remembered that BT uploaded his AI into jack's helmet during the time hopping section of the game so they can communicate while cooper travels through time. Very clever and provides hope for BT to comeback again.

      If you re-watch the launcher scene, where you have to manually pilot BT, you will see "Uploading" on the hud for an extended period of time, I believe this is BT Updating the copy of his AI in the helmet with a everything that had happened since it was initially installed. Thus, the AI in the helmet would be a full copy of BT's mind up till they launched themselves into the core.

    • @xXCursedWorgenXx

      @@drewmeriborne1584probably the reason why it never communicated as well, because the helmet can't possibly handle the full AI without damage so most of it stay dormant within its systems, compared to only having a small part during the time skip mission. And the only thing BT's AI could have managed with the limited functionality of the now overburdened helmet was Morse code with its light.

    During one of their first conversations, there's a choice where you choose: "How long did you serve with Lastimosa?"
    Answer: "He was an excellent pilot... and a *good friend."*
    I'd say Lastimosa was talking to *both* of them to take care of each other. It was broad as we don't know who he's talking to. He was looking at Cooper, but the 3rd Protocol: Protect the Pilot
    There's a chance Lastimosa's neural link that this Protocol was inputted to BT as his dying wish and order, but in the Introduction, Cooper says that there's a *special bond with the Pilot and Titan,* so it's speculation for me.
    Another dialogue of where BT warns the IMC is lying about turning yourself in. If you choose, "You don't think I'm that stupid." BT answers back with it being "Undetermined until they establish the neural link."
    Maybe that's true, but there could be meaning of BT's reluctant of being assigned to a rifleman.
    In the 2nd mission, you find your first titan weapon where a new dialogue pops up saying, "someone's in love." BT answers back with he has 50% of having the emotion of "love." So we find out there might be emotions in titans after all.
    Although their relationship of knowing each other was short-lived and it was a Machine- Pilot thing, you'd expect nothing, but blunt and straightforward answers from BT about the mission and how the outcomes of their current situation can become a reality. Some of BT's outcomes technically were meant for Cooper to be cautious as Protocol 3 is: Protect the Pilot.
    When we think of machines, we always expect them to just do what they're told, but there were 2 Protocols that were given. When he protects Cooper in the ship, BT had the Ark, but was with Cooper. As said in the video of BT instantly going to Cooper instead of calculating the situation, he points out quickly they're stuck instead of evaluating another solution to get out. In most missions, BT continuously mentions "Uphold the mission," but he chose Protecting Cooper over upholding the mission.
    Titanfall 2 was a masterpiece for its time.

But I agree, there could have been more. I made some points how Lastimosa had a lasting impact, but I wish that point would have been more explicitly made, because I think you really have to look for it.
      All of that being said, this campaign was short, and what they did with it is still impressive. During development, I am sure they had to use their time and resources efficiently, and it seems other things took priority over Lastimosa.

    I've also noticed how BT and Jack's link was totally artificial at first. They only bonded because of the neural link. It was strictly for work, for upholding the mission. This is true for the player also, as you only bond with BT through his character and how he supports the character you play at first. This way, both Jack and the player grow to appreciate BT not just though the link, but through a genuine connection built on trust and consistency. This makes his sacrifice so much more meaningful as the game chooses to make both you and Jack more deeply connected to BT.

    Great video! I love BT as a character and you do a great job encapsulating what makes BT a great character! However, I do think you left out a few key moments. Trust is a two way street and you talk a lot about the journey of the player learning to trust BT and develop a relationship with him. But what about BT learning to trust Jack, us, the player? BT calls Cooper "Pilot" until after the mission in the combat simulation where BT is captured. Cooper proves his skill and dedication as a pilot to both BT and the mission and as such BT starts calling Cooper by his last name and not "pilot." Additionally, the first time BT calls Cooper "Jack" is after the solo section with the smart pistol, where Cooper yet again demonstrates his dedication to BT and the mission, thus earning BT's trust to call him "Jack."
    Additionally, I think respawn did a fantastic job immersing us, the player, in Cooper's shoes. Especially at the mission with the smart pistol after you lose BT and Cooper says NOTHING. This lets us, the player, infuse all of our emotions into that sequence with the smart pistol. The rage, desperation, and grief felt in that sequence after BT's seeming destruction in not truly Coopers...it's our own that we project onto Cooper.
    Thank you for a wonderful video Titanfall Jesus!

    • @Midz-
      @Midz-  6 місяців тому +5

      Thank you! I agree, trust is a two way street here, and absolutely, BT's trust towards Cooper is a cool progression to look at. I agree, one way in which that is shown is the progression of how BT refers to Cooper. Pilot > Cooper > Jack. In the vid, I mentioned the "Jack" part after BT's data core is installed, but I did not realize it is actually said before that, good point.
      I totally agree about Respawn immersing us, especially with that smart pistol scene. The feelings felt by Cooper are the feelings felt by the player. They also immerse us in the final scene. They easily could have made the entire thing a cinematic, but at the beginning when BT asks for assistance moving, it requires the player to keep moving, you can't just take a seat back and watch, you, the player, has to move BT.
      Thank you for all your insight! Your support is much apreciated!

    This was ana awesome video just one thing you missed for BT's character he actually learns from and tries to be more human and fit in with a lot of dialog as well; like learning how to do a thumbs up from Jack (does it after the Viper fight), learning what sarcasm was from presumably Lastimosa, calling throws fastballs when you are being thrown to the 64 ship and thinking of doing throws when he throws a pole in Effect and Cause, the hot streak dialog option but still have those moments of misunderstandings here and there (also in the hot streak dialog) like when Jack talks fracture says it sounds familiar and instead of relating to the location or the operation(Its been a while need to play it again) it is related to a head fracture Jack suffered. I cant remember all of them but BT is a nice middle ground between a pretty much fully human AI like Cortana and purely logical AI he has learned from those around him and has adopted them into his communication.

    • @Midz-
      @Midz-  5 місяців тому +1

      Very good insight, and I agree. There def is a learning aspect for BT. I think the thumbs up is a wonderful example. I agree, BT is a lovely balance of almost full human and full AI

    I've watched extremely emotional films before, read literature & etc.
    Movies like "A Silent Voice" or "Goodwill Hunting" were incredible films with immense emotional depth that left a mark on me. But I don't think I've ever cried or teared up at any piece of media before...
    ...until I played Titanfall 2. The main takeaway from Titanfall is that it can be argued that it isn't a deep or necessarily emotional game to begin with, but what makes it special among masterpieces like I just mentioned is that the bond you have with BT feels REAL. I'm not ashamed to say I teared up when BT sacrificed himself, it genuinely felt as though I had lost a very good friend. No other piece of media has ever done that to me before.
    Bravo to Respawn & this video.

    When I first played Titanfall 2, I had almost no idea about the game, I saw a few small clips of the online gameplay and that was about it.
    So at the start I found myself not trusting BT, even going to the point as to exclaim to my friends (who already played through the game) that I think BT is gonna turn out to be the final boss or something, which makes sense because the last game I played right before Titanfall 2 was Portal 2.
    However after what was I think the second boss that feeling changed a lot and at the end I was genuinely sad to see him go.

    Idk if this is just so obvious or if this is actually being overlooked but the "i wont go anywhere" line in the end can also be chosen like right at the beginning.
    I just really love this detail because it shows the development of Coopers and BTs so nice; Where in the beginning he has this classic "robot doesnt get common sayings" response, at the end BT acknowleges the emotional support by Cooper and gets what he wants to tell him.

    This video is fucking amazing. So happy someone has covered BT this way. BT is such a great character. It feels like you are friends first and soldiers second. BT when he died was genuinely one of the few times in gaming where I’ve felt real sadness and shed a tear or two. Going further in the story and getting him a new chassis I was pumping my fist. Also I think something underrated is Protocol 3. Idk what it is but “Protect The Pilot” is so cool to me. And it feels like BT will do more for Protocol 3 than the other two. He has the ark inside him. He loses it and gives it to the enemy, to make a last ditch effort to make sure cooper is safe. 10/10 video you deserve so much more recognition.

    I like reading BT's "Hello Jack" line as a sign of respect, like he's acknowledging that we saved him by mowing through those dudes. you could also read jack's silence as focus, as his mission is getting BT to safety; that expresses how much it means to him.

    • @Midz-
      @Midz-  5 місяців тому +2

    I think you missed something important towards the end. 1 if you don't say anything at the last dialogue BT will reply with "Goodbye Jack" and not with "Trust me".
    2 When Jack says "Im not going anywhere" is a phrase he also said at the beginning of the first mission where BT replies "Negative, we have to advance with the mission" (or something like that) so he doesn't understand the sarcasm, but at the end BT understands and responds with a simple "Copy that".

    Another interesting detail is that the Titan Cooper calls down is called FS-1041, which is the same one he called down during his training with Lastimosa. So it could be that it was already planned to be Coopers Titan by Lastimosa, data core and all (it may have also been BT's former chassy as he calls it "old paint, same datacore"). But BT and Cooper already had spent time together and a high combat effectiveness as a team, that even from a military standpoint it made more sense to let them continue to work together

    You did a wonderful job reflecting how lovable BT was, and how deep the seemingly professional bond is formed between them and Cooper, and most importantly, the player. You even managed to get my tears rolling a bit again just remembering these moments. MAAAAN, such a wonderful story. I really love the details of how he does the same gesture with the little fist as he's about to throw you, as an acknowledgement of it being a last trust fall just like the other ones. Just like the first one. I would have liked pointing out how BT decided to throw Cooper because Cooper himself says in the mission where he has to warp between timelines how it'd be more efficient to throw the pilot instead of making a bridge with some debree. He did the same throw, but with you instead, as he listened to you.

      Thank you for the nice comment, much appreciated! I too absolutely love all of the details in this game. And yea, one of the good ones if that BT throws us after we literally ask for it earlier in the campaign. This campaign is full of so many beautiful details/consistencies like that. That being said, unless I want a super long vid, I can’t include them all. This was my first vid of this sort, and something I learned was how difficult it is to pick and choose what to include and what to omit, especially when you keep learning more. Because of this, I def might revisit this topic in the future and look at some of those details.

They were the same tears that I use when I read a book of some kind, or when I see someone lose a lover/friend/family member.…… losing the game is one thing…… but when it comes to making something straight from the heart and soul that my friends is what art feels like and this entire story was a work of art and still is because you can feel and it’s good talk about getting in touch with your humanity through a robot

    What I found the most impactful was the moment Cooper slid off the dish. He doesn't scream in panic. As he's plunging into what may very well be his demise, he calls for BT in panic. BT has become his safety, his confidant, his last chance. And BT answers the call: "got you". That moment is breathtaking.
    Following this with the thumb up exchange was the cherry on top. Not only has BT been embedded in Cooper's primal part of the brain, but Cooper is also affecting BT's behavior to be more personal.
