- After the east to west rail link "over the top" at Nuneaton closed to passengers, the line became freight only and was known as 'The Nuneaton Avoiding Line'.
Around thirty years later it was decided by British Railways that the line was surplus to requirements.
Thank you very much for this. The best film we have from a train on the old avoiding line (or the Midland Railway's main line from Leicester to Birmingham New St when its trains served Abbey St station). Very useful to compare with what we have now, the realignment to the new platforms 6 and 7 at Nuneaton TV. That was part of the WCML upgrade carried out 2004-08. I think the Hams Hall regional intermodal freight terminal was opened and in service before this was done - Hams Hall terminal was opened (by John Prescott) in 2001.
With the digging and construction work going on at 3:08, do you think they'd already started building the link between this line and Nuneaton main station at the time of this video?
