I don't know who's misquoting it to you, but it's also been used in multiple movies and parodies. "We don't need no stinking badges" actually originated in the 1927 novel The Treasure of Sierra Madre by B. Traven. In the 1948 film adaptation from the book, the line is spoken by the Mexican bandit leader "Gold Hat" (Alfonso Bedoya) to Fred C. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart). The line is part of a tense standoff where Gold Hat tries to convince Dobbs that he and his men are Federales. The full quote is: Dobbs: “If you are the police, where are your badges?” Gold Hat: “Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinking badges!” The line has been parodied many times, including in the 1967 Monkees episode "A Nice Place to Visit" and the 1974 movie Blazing Saddles. In 2005, the American Film Institute named the full quote #36 on its list of "AFI's 100 Years...100 Movie Quotes

One of my all-time favorite movies and scenes. Alfonso Bedoya deserved a supporting actor Oscar even though he only had three important scenes and in one of them he only spoke Spanish, you had no doubt what he was saying.
Was he the man who said "We don't need no..."? Yeah, a great character. I give Hollywood credit for at least putting on a strong "minority" without just making fun of them in what year... the early 40's?
@@jeffryhammel3035 Yes. The second big scene was he and a couple of accomplices murder Bogart at the pool just outside the little village where Bogart and his mates bought the burros. The final scene is when Bedoyen and his minions try to sell the burros in the same village and are caught and executed by the villagers. That’s the scene that is all in Spanish but is completely clear what’s going on and what everyone is saying.
@kurttate9446 I like things like this because there are many people who know more about a flick or work of art or piece of music than myself. It makes watching a movie or listening to a song even better the 2nd or 3rd time.
@kurttate9446 That's the best part about commentary - people who know more than I do on a subject - here a great movie - make watching it a 2nd time even more enjoyable. Thanks.
The inspiration of "We don't need no stinkin badgers!" in the Weird Al film UHF.😂😂
Actually, the line was first used in "Blazing Saddles."
@@cjmarshall0221 "The Treasure of Sierra Madre" was made in 1948, definitely before "Blazing Saddles".
This was the inspiration for UHF, not Blazing Saddles.
@@darthrevan9858 Blazing Saddles debuted in 1974, while UHF in 1989. Given the fact the line is in BOTH movies, I contend that Al lifted it from Blazing Saddles - a very popular film - as opposed to being inspired by Sierra Madre. It's too much of a coincidence to think that he came up with exactly the same line as Mel Brooks.
@@cjmarshall0221you're literally proving my point. I'm aware that it was in Blazing Saddles, it was also used by the Monkees in their TV show. The Sierra Madre clip is the ORIGINAL. Hence the reason I said inspiration of the quote. Thousands of people use the telephone everyday, that doesn't mean they started it, or were the first to use it.
Your 1st response said "it was FIRST used in Blazing Saddles", it wasn't. This clip was the 1st use.
@@darthrevan9858 What I meant is that the first use of "We don't need no stinking badges" was when it appeared in Blazing Saddles. Yes, the inspiration came from "The Treasure of Sierra Madre." But anyone who used the Blazing Saddles quote took it from that movie, not from The Treasure of Sierra Madre.
Yes an all time great John Huston production
With outstanding performances from the great
Bogart , Huston senior , Tim Holt and the classic ole cut throat Barton McClain i thank god everday for my wonderful ♥️ mom who sat me down with her to watch these classics😊
I just watched this movie for the 3rd or fth time in my life. It truly is a great movie. Give a fantastic glimps of what life was like in the 1920's, when men were men.
One of the best movies ever
This is one of my favorites, watch it every time it's shown, l have often adjusted my day or time to watch it, when I can.....
I also like, the Caine mutiny and sahara and the list goes on.....
I would watch these films over and over over the crap the make nowadays
This was my late father in laws favourite film, and this his favourite scene, he used to recite this complete with accents up to his dying days.
Damn. I never seen this scene but always seen it referenced lol
It’s better than I could have imagined.
The sheer character portrayals, mannerisms, dialogue, atmosphere, etc is all very top notch.
I love it!
My uncle who lived in Florida would stay at our house when he worked, also an Ironworker, like my father and I, anyway, he had this movie on VHS, we watched it together, something I will never ever forget, nor have I, as its been like 35 years ago. And its one of the best movies I have ever seen. Beretta is the little boy in another seen, his first acting role I believe...good to see this, brings back fond memories, thank you
You can tell Hollywood has never used a Winchester. 😂
By just this one movie, or does that include all the westerns that featured them? Are you saying that not one of them got it right? Sincerely, please elaborate.
@@notquitedone51you know exactly what he meant. If not, quite eating the sweet colorful candy chips you're finding on the floor at your grandma's house. 😂
@@Gottiline_Ace We didn't try to do you any harm. Why don't you try to be a little more polite?
AlphonseBEDOYA..best villain you love to dislike 🍿🎥
Super Film und super Schauspieler 🎉❤
I thought this was English until I got to the end. 😂 Even better, I understand the whole thing in German.
But that still threw me for a loop.
So many great scenes were born in homage to this truly timeless cinematic moment.
By far my favorite is UHF's "Badgers?"
I can watch this over and over 😂he said all of you come over here and see the little Dove 🕊️ that I found hiding 🤣 this is a funny line, can't wait to see the movie 🎥🍿👍 thank you for posting this clip 😁
That "Alright, alright." in whatever voice he was doing after he gets shot at absolutely killed me
Watched this with my father one Sunday afternoon in the early 80s. Good stuff
The perennial classic with Alfonso Bedoya who came back as the Frito Bandito.
YES! Frito Bandito and the MunchaBunch!
Large bag, 55¢. Midsize bag, 33¢. 1971.
Shite I seen them lower than that!
This was on late one night during the 80s when I was a teenager. Me and my brother watched it all the way through without saying a word.
Best casting ever. Best line too.
The Bandit on the left is the same Bandit that appeared in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" -- "Por Favor"
"We ain't got no badges." I love they way he said it.
"We don't need no stinking badgers!" Raul from the movie UHF.
That's what brought me here.
Me too. I didn’t know it was a parody of this movie. I love UHF.
Love that movie
Today we're teaching poodles how to fly!
GREAT film. ONE of Bogart's best.
In the history of Cinema no extra has dropped a line as memorable as this.
One of the first catch phrases!
Sounds like the FBI. we're here to help you !
Yeas FBI for you.
Sounds like you have an ax to grind even if it has nothing to do with the video
@@neilkurzman4907No axe to grind, just experience working around and with them for years.
@@neilkurzman4907 I think he's drawing a comparison with the video, so it has something to do with it.
@@davidjames579
Why would an FBI agent not wish to show you their badge. It immediately shows you that they have power over you. So no, he’s making a dumb comment that he’s not even going to back up. He might as well have just said I hate the government and left it at that.
👋🤣👍”Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!” Also reminds me of Mel Brooks “Blazing Saddles!” Lol 😂👍 great movie!🎥 Bogart was great on this one!
“We’ll pick it up and go Norway…” 😆
One of my favorites Treasures of Sierra Madres
Ha! I remember that movie! I was just a little kid and went to the movies with my parents. That stinking badges line became very comical and famous in our household with ALL the many relatives for years and years and YEARS! “Badges? Badges! We dom have to show you no stinking badges!” O.M.G.!!!!! 😂
One of my favorite Bogart movies is a classic directed by John Houston who also has a part earlier in the movie and Walter Houston John's father as Howard this movie never grows old 👍
My other fav is their Maltese falcon. I can’t get enough of either one of them. Falcon may get the nod but this has more going on and is deeper
Badges? Badges? we don't need no stinking BADGES!
Awesome picture.
We don't need no STINKING BADGES😅
@brucechristensen2161 Who cares.
I don't have no Stinking badge
An excellent movie. Bogie died grom gold fever.
This line ," I don't have to show you no stinkin' badges", was iconic.
¡They don't need to show you any stinkin badges! ¡Jajaja!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Next thing he'll be asking for voter ID.
No, insurance and registration for his horses 😂
Gun safety checks, are for your safety.
Hope so
LOL 😂🇺🇸👍
What's wrong with that?
Better than 99.9% of movies made by Hollywood today.
Ok boomer
So that's where that comes from!!!! Thank you!
This was the first place I'd heard that quote, but I'll forever think of UHF every time I hear that phrase.
Badgers 🦡 BADGERS! We don't need no stinkin Badgers ?
Gold and greed makes a deadly cocktail
Filme maravilhoso.
And of course, Alfonso never said "We don't need no stinking badges".
Play it again Alphonso
@@richardgibbins5612 😂
That actually surprised me. I kept waiting for the line.
I always thought he said "Matches? We don nee no stinking matches"
@@Black_Patriot-Veteran-1970 That was his lesser known, but equally banditoish, tennis playing cousin...I thiiiiinnnk. 😉
I miss historically accurate feathers and beans even if they weren’t always the right match
One of my favorite movies of all time... You know.
A great lesson to all of us to never surrender that which protects us.
You really think he could have fought all those guys off wit that single rifle at that range? In real life that is.
@@Cheepchipsable In this type of encounter, it's not about successfully surviving. It's about making them second guess not wanting to be the one or two that dies with you.
Excellent movie
The best Bandido portrayal ever ! A truly great movie
Certainly a contender with the great Eli Wallace as "Calvera" in Mag 7!
Even the teeth looked authentic
"We don't need no stinking Badges" 😆
My boy didn’t even flinch 🔥
