I think people dont quite understand buster. He is a psychopath, he enjoys killing and he thinks he is the best. He enjoys getting into the next situation where he could show off his skills. He absolutely has no regard for rules and laws, it´s all part of his facade to challenge himself. He is an adrenalin junkie. Definetly unique and interesting though.
Something I didn't notice until I watched this clip again - While he's kicking the table, Buster has that same twisted smile on his face as he had during his first set of kills in this segment. He comes off as pleasant, but he genuinely enjoys killing.
This is why I believe he didn't take the poker hand. Some people are saying it's because of superstition and he was afraid to, but I think it plays into the theme of him being a Misanthrope. The hand itself was good, and he likely could've won with it. I think the fact that he did it to instigate a fight becomes obvious when you look back at the cantina scene, where he comes in claiming to want a drink, kills six people, and then leaves without ever getting a drink. He never really wanted one in the first place.
@@Omicron716 I wouldn't go that far, he clearly has an ego about his six shooter skills. We see that clearest in his final duel when his hubris catches up to him. But I wouldn't say he's instigating fights just to kill. He just seems to have a very "laid back" approach to life with no regard for any threat because he's confident he's got it outmatched.
Smiling doesn't necessarily indicate emotion. Sometimes when your adrenaline dumps you might just appear to be smiling, also the natural fight or flight reaction makes your jaw tighten up and your testicles shrink up closer to the body, it's a natural defense mechanism because getting hit in either location when things are loose and just hanging can either knock you out cold or put you in the fetal position. There are other examples of what your body does, sometimes people cry when they are extremely angry. Tears may be dripping out of someones eyes as they bash anothers skull in. It's strange what the human body does in these kinds of moments.
@@Omicron716 i liked more the idea that Buster is not a misanthrope in the sense that he truly doesn't actively do anything to start fights, but he is a really good duelist and likes to show off, so he enjoys the killing but he doesn't go out of his way to search it. Which is why he doesn't outright kill Joe's brother; he shoots off his trigger finger and then the other 4 just to be sure, but when the brother tries to shoot at him with his other hand, well, Buster has no other choice but to kill him And the fact that he doesn't grabs a drink for himself after killing all the people in the cantina is because he is no petty thief, he is Buster Scruggs; the San Saba Songbird, he is way above stealing some Whiskey, or entering an establishment with concealed guns if said establishment has a rule against it
I was so disappointed when his story was over. I really wanted to see more about him. The whole movie is great but I love the character of Buster Scruggs.
Then again his death was an amazing expectation subversion, a storytelling device so to speak. The movie was never about him, just the opening, and many of the other stories in it were just as fitting as Buster's.
Yeah, its an old adage - you don't lead w/your best material. Movie was good, was even good overall, but buster was the best part and should have been the finish to the movie, not the start. Imagine if you saw the movie for the first time, and his part was the finale, woulda been an overall better experience. On the other hand, I think it may have been a bit of an homage to how they used to play a cartoon before a movie, and his story being a bit like bugs bunny and such, really fits that bill.
For those who don’t know the reason buster looks so flustered and refuses to play the hand of cards once he sees them is because a pair of black aces & 8’s is what was referred to as the “dead man’s hand” in the old west. Legend has it it was the hand wild bill hickock was holding when shot in the back of the head

You know what Busters story was about? It doesn’t matter how ruthless or how fast you are on a draw, there will always be someone more ruthless and faster on the draw. Sometimes you’re smarter to just quit while you’re ahead
Exactly. My friend who has seen the movie several times says the man in black cheated, but when I first watched it with him, I automatically assumed it's because the man in black was better and faster. Buster was just too cocky and even said himself "can't be top dog forever"

I actually really enjoyed this movie. The almost absurdist humor in the Scruggs story made its sudden moments of violence seem all the more shocking. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Beautifully shot movie also.

Me too. That staunch grin and then transferring right into the ‘Surly Joe’ song. Even when the definition of ‘Epic’ thinks it’s seen it all it even bows to the epic-ness of this scene.
If the Coen Brothers don't make a full-length movie about Buster Scruggs, they're crazy. I know he died.....hell, think of a way to bring him back to life. Or make it a prequel. By far, one of the most entertaining characters I've ever seen in a western or any other movie, for that matter.
I don't think this character would work for an entire movie. He's way too badass and lucky (except for the final part of this short, of course) which is something that tends to get boring very quickly due to how predictable his interactions end being, almost like a one trick pony or like hearing the same joke over and over. It just doesn't work. This short is just perfect as it is and IMO, that's what makes the character to shine even more.
Hmmmm....."way too badass". Yeah I guess you're probably right, Oveja. Being way too badass never worked for Clint Eastwood in all of the Dirty Harry movies, Charles Bronson in all the Death Wish movies, Bruce Willis in all the Die Hard movies, and countless hundreds of other movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris, or Jean-Claude Van Damme. Yeah, being badass just doesn't work in full-length movies.
@@oldschoolsinger What a way to miss the point about what I said. All the guys you named for sure are good examples of badass characters, but none of them is remotely as exaggerated as Buster Scruggs. That's the problem with him when you think about an entire movie based on a character that as the other person pointed out, is too cartoonish. In every damn interaction not only he succeeded (save the last one), but he did in such ridiculous spectacular ways that ask to indulge yourself in the most childish suspension of disbelief. That's why it worked here in the short, cause it was only a couple of that interactions and it had after that, all the other stories that are infinitely more grounded in reality, which balanced the off the charts badassery & goofiness of Buster Scruggs. More of that would only work in a movie targeted at teenagers, which is something the Coen brothers aren't known for. Regards.
Dredd Poolio I too would like to see a full length movie about Buster Scruggs, from birth to death, and what events in his life created the gun slinger he became.
There's a lot of risk in revisiting this brilliant and one in a million theme, and making a full movie out of it. It would be a tall order keeping this level of quality for that long, and it could backfire, including slightly diminishing the awesomeness this original piece. I think we can all agree this short film will continue to grow in popularity. Maybe it's best to let it be.
Yes, that, and also that it's the Cohens here, and not some Tarantino's, as many here seem to long for. It ain't about entertaining with pistoleros ad lib, but delivering a message on the absurdity of mankind's sojourn in this world.
Trying now would make it suck. But originally? If they set out to make a movie about him right from the beginning it’d be done right. There wouldn’t be enough time for expectations of this character and style in a span of less than two hours. The Cohen brothers had a damn golden ticket and they wiped their asses with it
Why do I read every comment as if I were the handsome man with the pleasant disposition and if I do say so myself, a rather soothing voice when my gullet has been cured from being parched.

TankUni He was a good man who was forced into a bad life. That’s why he was dressed in white, a common tactic for old westerns. No matter how good you are, you are still at the mercy of the world and the evils it holds. At least, that’s how I take it.

Which is why he doesn't outright kill Joe's brother; he shoots off his trigger finger and then the other 4 just to be sure, but when the brother tries to shoot at him with his other hand, well, Buster has no other choice but to kill him
And the fact that he doesn't grabs a drink for himself after killing all the people in the cantina is because he is no petty thief, he is Buster Scruggs; the San Saba Songbird, he is way above stealing some Whiskey, or entering an establishment with concealed guns if said establishment has a rule against it
@@Omicron716 thats far fetched. He doesnt take liberty he just reacts

When a cowboy trades his spurs for wings
Yeah, its an old adage - you don't lead w/your best material. Movie was good, was even good overall, but buster was the best part and should have been the finish to the movie, not the start. Imagine if you saw the movie for the first time, and his part was the finale, woulda been an overall better experience. On the other hand, I think it may have been a bit of an homage to how they used to play a cartoon before a movie, and his story being a bit like bugs bunny and such, really fits that bill.
stirange yeah i personally enjoyed all the stories
For those who don’t know the reason buster looks so flustered and refuses to play the hand of cards once he sees them is because a pair of black aces & 8’s is what was referred to as the “dead man’s hand” in the old west. Sponsored by Marlboro if they did it somewhat like shoot em up, which is just a violent version of bugs bunny and Daffy Duck somewhat
Luke, you are THE MAN!!!! HAHAHA That's EXACTLY what they need to do.

So, Buster had to make it very clear that there was no "if" to consider.
Buster wanted wanted to cause a scene though, because the cards he saw where actually very good.
@@Mobin92 it was the dead man’s hand, very superstitious and was said that you would die if you played that hand. It’s also why that first guy left, he had his back to the door and the dead man’s hand
@@pdinger0256 Good point. I didn't realise that the first time I saw the film.
Right before Buster kicks the table board, the hammer's down on Surly Joes 1873 despite the fact that he cocked it back in the previous scene.
This has to be one of my favorite "westerns". Loved this one SO much I actually watched it MANY, MANY times and this scene is definitely in my top three for the movie.
Как фильм называется???
I want a series of Buster Scruggs
