I saw darkness like that suddenly appear 400-500 feet ahead of me on a city road once. I didn’t know at the time that a tornado had touched down, but I didn’t need to know that to not drive into it. Buildings, the road, traffic lights, trees, vehicles… everything in front of me literally disappeared behind a wall of darkness. I stopped in the road and thought to myself “I’m not driving into that” just as I saw a car in the distance get enveloped by it. Fortunately it was only a weak EF1-2 tornado that just knocked down some trees and building signs, and nobody was injured.

I’ve seen two tornados, both while driving. One was like the characteristic tornado 🌪️ like the emoji, and it was far away. The other I didn’t see until it literally touched down in front of me maybe 400-500 feet ahead. I never even saw the funnel, just complete darkness at ground level like in this video, but fortunately it turned out to be small and didn’t travel on the ground far.

I've always wondered how a truck driver could miss something as big as a car in their lane and crash into it at full speed. But not seeing a tornado, the size of THE SKY? That tanker driver is a menace to society.
That's right, there's people out there qualified to drive a vehicle that weighs 40 tons that also aren't smart enough to avoid driviing directly into a giant tornado. That's not too comforting for people that have 3 new drivers out on the roads.
That tanker was hauling a heavy liquid load. Add to that the fact emergency braking make the fluid slosh back and forth making a surge effect that will continue to push the truck forward. Hence no way he was stopping in time. I just hope he had his brown trousers on.
Just keep in mind that that with self driving cars and trucks. You will see this more and more. Chances are a self driving car or truck will not know to recognize a tornado and stop before driving into it.
If a tanker trailer is loaded it’s pretty much going to be safe against high winds like that. There isn’t enough flat surface area for the wind to have any effect on it.
So I googled this to see if the tanker driver that drove right into it survived or not. Turns out both the tanker and box trailer drivers survived. The tanker stayed upright but was pushed into trees on the side of the road, which means he must of been able to drive a bit farther since the nearest trees are farther down the road as seen before tornado comes into camera view.
A few people in this comments section could learn some things if they had a close encounter with a huge tornado. If you are not someone who is very weather aware and depending on visibility it can appear to be just dark low hanging clouds. I admit that I don't know why that driver drove straight into that but it is obvious that none of the drivers saw it or realized what it was till until they were much closer than they should be.
Does anyone know the mass of that tanker, if fully loaded? With it's shape and potential mass, it's probably the least likely type of truck to get blown over. Seeing the road in front, and staying on it, that's a different matter.

Being next to a tornado in an RV was one of the scariest things I've witnessed. The tractor trailer that drove past us as we pulled over ended up in a field about 100 yards from the road.
Tractor trailer = me always doing my homework and don't pass the test. Tanker = the classmate who doesn't do homework and passes the test. Tornado = the test. Darkness 1:02 = me thinking about it in the train back to home. The last car = me running from the resit test that I must do later in my schoolyear.

In that open terrain, you can see a tornado for MILES! He would've had to have been distracted for a long time not to notice that storm. Even if the tornado was rain-wrapped, it's a wall of zero visibility in front of you. Darwin welcomes you home.

I stopped at the rest area on 880 before crossing into Nebraska because of the tornado warnings ahead. All of us and trucking know the type of people that drive for moving companies so that pretty much explains what we see in the video.

In that open terrain, you can see a tornado for MILES! He would've had to have been distracted for a long time not to notice that storm. Even if the tornado was rain-wrapped, it's a wall of zero visibility in front of you. Darwin welcomes you home.

That twister was moving at around 80-85 miles an hour when it crossed the road. Crazy stuff.... Hope everyone is ok. 😢

There's no defending either of them. As a driver myself, if you miss A TORNADO in the plains, you're not paying attention.

But seriously, to be fair, it might’ve just touched down in front of them so they never saw it coming until it was nearby.
@@AFTER_MIDNITE it did not touchdown right in front of them it was huge and just like the rest of us in Iowa yesterday their phones were blowing up with alerts and you could see it right in front of them. I stopped at the rest area on 880 before crossing into Nebraska because of the tornado warnings ahead. All of us and trucking know the type of people that drive for moving companies so that pretty much explains what we see in the video.
