Absolutely, and bring the Bible back too. That book was banned in schools and none of these kids learned how to be brave and courageous. Kids didn't need "safe" spaces when the Bible was in schools. One of the best lessons from the Bible is "do not fear" your own shadow.

I Love this lady. As an avid reader all my life, I'm 67 and book banning and burning us on the top of my list too. My mother was German and she can tell you the same if she was still living. She was ten years old and rembered until she died it all started with book banning and burning. It was a fight to keep people ignorant about what was happening. Reading is knowledge and vitally important.

To be fair, my school library had a policy of not accepting adult novels, the line was drawn at young adult fantasy where if a book had s3x in it, it was donated to the city library. Then again the school system had us reading "Decameron" at 14-15 in class with one student reading and all the rest trying not to laugh. After that no contemporary adult novel would have ever shocked us. The same year we also had to read a novel about child marriage where the barely teen bride (13) was bought for a barely teen boy (14), but because the boy didn't know how to consummate the marriage, the old men next door steals her and rap3s the girl, thereby making her his wife instead, the novel continues with the girl being abused by the almost 50yo neighbor and the boy forced to recognize that he likes the girl but there relationship would be against God's commandments. I don't know what made the teachers/professors choose that particular book, maybe because we were a year or two older than the characters but it was scaring. I have read and forgotten many books but even though I don't remember the author of that novel, the content is stamped in my brain and makes me want to hurl every time I remember that book.
So in my honest opinion, the thing they should be debating is what literature is taught in class, because most students would only visit the library if they have to write a book report and even then they'll be googling summaries, but there is no escaping if they are reading some awful stuff in class.
They are serving sexualy explicit content to children. Are you ok with that?

I hate the story in "the Handmaid's Tale". I read it when it was first published. I would never suggest it be banned: 1) It is none of my business, 2) It is a warning of a horrible future that crept up on people who felt it would never happen to them, 3) It makes people think, 4) Children are people. It is the job of schools to teach children to think.
Margaret Atwood has said in many interviews that every single thing she wrote in The Handmaid’s Tale happened somewhere or other in history sometime. She just took those events and put them together to create a novel. She said she did it as a warning to us all to prevent fascism.

Someone in Florida can go order theses books on-line, go to a book store or find it in a public library in some cases. Learning about other people’s experiences and views is not the same as pornography in the classroom. The few books that you seem to be referring to with explicit sexual content may be problematic for some, but that is exactly the point. Pornography, sexuality, intimacy are all conflated when they are very different things.

I read a lot as a kid and teen. I read voraciously and much of what I read was from classroom libraries. I am 40 so that was back when people weren’t so threatened by children reading.
I did read things that shocked me, but I was also a very sheltered kid. Part of the way I learned about the world in a broader sense was through these books. I think without my uncontrolled access to books, I would have grown up so painfully ignorant and unable to cope with being tossed out into the adult world otherwise completely unprepared. This is what adults are advocating to do to kids now.
Reading all kinds of books and learning about the experiences of others, both good and bad, didn’t ruin me. I think it made me a much more successful adult. I was far less likely to be taken advantage of.
Conservatives have been attacking public education and our access to reading for decades because they know people wouldn't vote for them if they knew any better.
You're describing my life in your comment. Between my parents good advice, which I was exceptionally lucky to have in my life, books were everything to me.

I grew up on the 60s and 70s. I could read anything on my parents bookshelf. Which ranged from Dale Carnegie to Henry James. I didn't understand a lot of it. My daddy would sometimes tell me I don't knowbif you should read that. I also read The Prophet by Kahlil Ghibran in the 3rd grade. But, the difference is, my elementary school wasn't checking out copies of Tropic of Cancer or The Story of O in the library. Which are pretty tame compared to some of the books they are providing for children now. And, these were books my parents had and they could take them away.

I love my English teacher. He’s having us read Animal Farm. He’s always very outspoken about censorship and how not letting kids read is a type of censorship. He says that there are lessons to be learned in all books and that not letting a child read books opens that child up to being controlled

There are so many republican attacks on freedoms going on now, that I am having trouble focusing on the essence of what it is they are are really doing to our country. Thank you, Mrs. Linn, for reminding me and helping me focus. I am with you 1000%
The short answer is they want to keep red states red. With the recent trend of people moving from blue states to red states due to the cost of living. Republicans are getting spooked. And so they're going all in on making their states as undesirable as possible to "liberal voters."
Abortion laws, anti LGBQT laws, etc. Are being put in place to dissuade democrats from moving to these states and pushing them to move out, giving Republicans a huge leg up in keeping their power, by making sure their big key states remain deep red.
This has nothing to do with kids, wokeness, babies, nothing. It's all about them desperately clinging to their dying ideology.
Like the old saying goes; "If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy."
And so do all those that watched the fight for decades...go woman go! I stand with you everyday!
She speaks words of wisdom! Her words were learned the hard way.
It's women's history month. This is a good lesson for us to learn from a true woman of history.
