An electric bycicle with no speed limit can be dangerous, agressive for most disctracted pedestrians.

Random stuff that happens while cycling in Lisbon.
September 2017
Lisbon, Portugal
This was just an experience with an electric bicycle ( without speed limit ) . I no longer drive one of these. In fact the ease of going faster surprises pedestrians that aren't expecting such speeds.
One Cyclist in Lisbon Que bike era??
KTM Machina
You looked like you were riding too fast in pedestrian areas
Was that couple making out in the middle of the lane?.. at 2:25
You are damm right!
One Cyclist in Lisbon LOL
Saurabh MeanMachine yes
Saurabh MeanMachine yes
Lol
In 2:22 you can see two stupid people kissing in the middle of the bike lane
Am I the only one that thinks when a cyclist rings his bell at you, it feels like you've broken 16 federal and state laws, violating every known restriction, deserving a life sentence and $5000 fine? No? Ok...
No ahah But they feel guilty, or should at least :P
Did u just assume said bicyclist's gender?
Lmao
Hammmyburger Do not go to the Netherlands or major cities of Denmark lol
No normal person should feel like that
Hammmyburger me too buddy, me too
1:55 Holy shit, he's like one of those NPCs in GTA games that jump ON your car instead of the other way.
1:50 is why you "aim" for the person while braking. You never know which way a pedestrian will go. (A lesson I learned from a bike messenger)
You're not aggressive, you're quite a careful rider. A lot of pedestrians are plain dumb and don't pay attention to what's happening around them. However, riding at those speeds on a bike I imagine it significantly reduces your braking distance, hence why I'd recommend you get a louder horn, instead of the traditional bell. It would also work well in making your presence known to inattentive drivers. ;)
João Rafael Gomes Baptista this is why i buy foghorns as my bell lol
James Quinn Should do the trick. XD
Get a Loud Horn :D I guy who bikes in NY has one and it works wonders!
To be fair, should pedestrians always be on the lookout for the 1% chance that there even is a cyclist in the first place?
Ally
Yes! Having a quick look over your shoulder or left/right doesn't even take a second, getting hit by a bike hurts a lot for the pedestrian and the cyclist involved who did nothing wrong. So why would you not look?!!
2:25 why are they making out in the middle of a bike lane
Love doesn't choose the place I guess XD
She is the bike and he is on it
The map effect was cool. Gave good context. It's a like from me!
Thanks John!
I warn people much earlier to they don't try to swerve in the wrong direction. If there's enough room, I don't even alert them and go around.
Same, but I remind myself of being careful going around and possibly stop pedaling so the bike's sound will make them aware a bike is approaching.
Instead of literally MAKING a problem with every single person and passive aggressively throwing your hand up every time you see someone walking how about you remember that the world doesn’t revolve around you and those paths shouldn’t be cleared for you to roam as you please. The most minor inconvenience and your privileged self shines bright
Give that comment one thousand thumbs up!
Those are literally bike lanes... BIKE LANES, and the STREET. Pedestrians are supposed to walk on the pavement/sidewalk, not in the middle of the street, and also not on the bike lane.
Careful with those tram tracks.
Lisabona seems like a beautiful place to bike around 😁
It is!
i live in small village.... there are just a hills up and down so it s boring. I like dat city :)
I’m from The Netherlands and when I first visited Portugal in 2011, I literally asked: where do the bikes go? Where are the bikes?
ahaha things have changed a lot since then
That's normal speed for me on my bike. Pedestrians are constantly mis-judging how fast I'm going and stepping out.
0:18 🏆 Respect Award 🏆
I am just waiting for you to say "Sai da frente porra" in a video
ahahah seria giro sim
br???
What does that mean haha?
you saying cuidado is just cute... love from Brazil lol
:P ahaha
choaya 조아야 Stolen comment
choaya 조아야 Parece que ele fala "get out", não?
no he's on portugal i guess
I don’t bike nor do I live in a city, but I believe you have sprouted a new found hatred in my head for bike-lane walkers.
What I learn in this video: Lisbon is a big city
Well, the biggest in Portugal at least.
You got some beautiful birdies in this video.
1:17, do pedestrians not have right of way across the crossing?
Nutsaur anyone that values their life would stop and check the way is clear before crossing no?
I'm happy to answer your question when someone answers mine.
Looks like a crossing with lights, which means that they only have right of way when they've got a green light.
You are correct.
Ah, you're right.
Thank you for pointing that out.
1:52 was just fucking stupid. Riding that fast in those conditions is just asking for trouble.
I know, I didn't have the perception.
love it!
0:38 - educating pedestrians that they should walk on crosswalks and 0:52 not in any other place.
What an amazing city. I would love live there
Neat! That bike sure looks like a lot of fun. Man you were zipping all around that town. I would love to have a bike like that! Seems fun!
Lisbon is beautiful!
1:56 are you kidding me? 30kph, thats way too high speed for narrow street like that. Very bad judgement by you. Completely your fault there.
That video is a great example of what I don't do now.
It looks so crammed there, not even one patch of grass in your whole ride through the city. Europe and Asia have some neat stuff but it really makes me appreciate the open spaces in North America.
Nani? these teleportation skills are un real
:D obrigado Maximinus
I ride an e-bike some of the time. Seems to generally cut off the power assist at about 31-32 MPH. But what I've learned is to know where and when to restrict myself. If the speed limit is 25 I back off going past that even on straight aways on the road. If it's a shared path or sidewalk I don't run past 20. The only time I go flat out at near to or at top power assist is on roads where they speed limit is 30 plus and I expect to have cars passing me. Obviously on some downhills I'm simply going to coast up to 35 plus or minus which I'm doing on a regular bike too.
When I was a kid a friend built a semi-automatic bell on bis front wheel. While driving he pulled the wire and it got contact with the turning tire and a permanent rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring surrounded him.
Maybe an idea for you, feel free to try it. Or maybe an air raid siren. Or an Amtrak train horn.
I like to do exploration around my neighborhood since there is still lots of construction (the workers dont mind you being there if you are staying out of the buildings and out of their way) and its huge. I’m considering buying an electric bike to make it easier on myself so I can stay out longer without wearing myself out. Would you recomend that I get one, and if so, what brand do you suggest?
Yes, do that! There are plenty of electric bicycles available on the market and I have tried some. The best so far was the KTM Machina, however it's very expensive.
Portugal is amazing luv it there so warm the food is great to
i don't bike and i live in the US, but i think the most infuriating thing about this isn't that the pedestrians are not caring, but the fact that you lose your speed and you can end up never getting that automatic feeling once you hit that speed
If you get so many close calls during a single ride, it doesn't matter whether it's the pedestrians being idiots or you being reckless. You need to take it down a notch to avoid injuring others and yourself. Being right won't help you, and a judge might not always see things the way you do. There's a difference between being technically correct and being just.
Olha continua com esses videos porque sao fixes - Dude keep doing these videos because are cool and make us understand more lisbon even if im from "almada" costa da caparica
:) Um dia destes dou aí um salto.
Yeah, I ride a bike too but I'm far more courteous when it comes to warning pedestrians. Maybe slow down a bit mate!
Be aware of your surroundings. If you’re a pedestrian look around be vigilant don’t be looking at your phone. I think it’s because bikes are silent from afar car tires make noise etc bikes are silent.
Yes, part of it.
Well, I'm 4 months late, but anyway, I'd say crossing is 50% hearing, because you can hear both directions and your eyes have to adjust each time you turn your head. Hell, I do a similar thing while riding roads, because hearing cars behind me helps me plan to move out of the way (lots of narrow, country roads), but you can't hear hybrids at all with the sound of wind resistance masking them, so it's easy to become an obstruction to them
yes my dad has an electric Mountain bike I took it for a ride around town and found out the Same thing, but the other way around with Cars! lol i'm in the United states some places have no bike lanes so i'm forced to ride with Traffic. the people driving car's see a Bike and at first do not Realize I have a motor and going 40mph and pull right out in front of me thinking they will get there first ..
honestly the bell ringing only serves to scare people into unpredictable moves, as a bike your best advantage is your agility if you have space just safely avoid people. You are driving too much like a car
imagine having a road bike in that city. must be painful!
It is, that's why I rarely use it
Hadi Yousef Why? I have a road bike only and think it's great around the city
oreosaysb00 a road/race bike with high pressure narrow tyres they dont really absorb shock that much and so it would be one hell of an uncomfortable ride mate!
Hadi Yousef True. But for the rest of the time, its much faster. Or you could also drop the pressure a bit on the road bike
oreosaysb00 yeah you could but risk pinch punctures tho
Lets agree to disagree shall we? 😂🚴🏼
is that a e-bike?
Yes.
One Cyclist in Lisbon And why don't you use a slick tire on asphalt?
maybe because he can get his tires stuck in the tram tracks, or maybe he offroads a bit
RIP MisterBassBoost
Probably, i got my thin tire stuck in the tram tracks once while cycling, and i fell in the middle of the road. So, embarrassing lol
ahhhhh sad sad. i dont have tram tracks where i live
That "cool" bike at 2:20 will go down with the tiniest wind imaginable... You can put a disc on the rear, but putting even a deep section wheel on the front can make you really unstable even with calm wind. No smart pro will ever ride with front deep section wheel (more than 35mm) on a windy day.
Dude, it is called driving at a safe speed. In any environment-particularly an urban one-you have to assume that there will be obstructions to your line of travel. This is true whether you are operating a car, a motorcycle, or a bicycle. Heck it is even true if you are running fast. basic principle: Do not travel faster than you can stop for or avoid any object that you have time to see.
I tried a trackstand once and then accidentally hit the throttle and nearly crashed into the kerb .
im amazed when the animation of the bike moving across the map, how tf do you go that fast, i mean its a bike, and you can get to places almost as fast as a car due to hidden shortcuts but im tired after less than a mile
Superb!!!!!!!!!! Nice work
Mans going 40 in the bike lane😂😂😂😂
My advice. Boas pedaladas. :)
Tens toda a razão Pedro. O clip do senhor que quase caiu do susto fez-me repensar.
2:25 Why were people making out in the middle of the bike lane?
That would be so much fun, but around here it's so hilly
Where do you live?
great movie , Love Portugal ! :D Great PEOPLE ! :D im from Poland :D
Thank you! Big hug for Poland!
Sometimes saying watch out isnt enough, imetimes ypu have to sya what side your going through, simply say "coming through your left" or "watch your right"
In Portuguese it sounds weird to say that.
What’s your speed monitor in this video? I would buy this one.
Pedestrians are
ATACC
PROTECC but most importantly
CROSSWALKS
Tip:curse every1 who walks on the bike lane
Biking like that is not very popular now but should be used mostly in the future in cities
1:49, 2:18 => Sometimes U have to slow down man, diving without care, attention and consideration for other road users will cause accidents and more regulations against ebikes.
lol people do people not look before stepping into the street how do they not see you
a1dan ツ wot?
At 1:17 you obviously turned into a tram, considering speed (quite fast, impressive) and sound ^^
Personally I don't ring my bell because I don't have to, people will give way all the time, and I give them a little wave for it, and carry on, the last time I used my bell was many years ago.
So how do you handle the crazy hills? any time i went there on vacation the hills reminded me of my bad condition lol
I use shortcuts and don't cycle on the steepest ones.
At Least The Girl At The Start Said Sorry
Was that the girl that said "Sh*t, sorry"? Definitely English.
I think so, in a lot of these clips it's hard to tell that it's a bike path
That sound of the bike. Priceless! Do u try to pick up a girls during driving? I do it very often :D i approach girls who walks on a bike line ;)
ahahah I have a girlfriend thanks to that in a way :P
what's wrong with people crossing the street without around. I always check both ways before crossing the street, it's instinctive even when I cannot hear any cars, I check anyway.
Anyone know what speedometer One Cyclist is using? Would like to get that model for my bike
Well I would stop at a crosswalk, too, when the car/bike does not seem to stop. You come quite close and I don't blame those people for trying to avoid an collision even though they have the right of way.
Some one woke up at wrong side of the bed...
What brand of ebike did you ride in this video?
i think that the people who are waiting at a crosswalk for you to pass, just dont want you to lose your momentum. at leat thats what I sometimes do
nice DEVO at the beginning
:)
Miguel - today is 06April 2020. This small clip about timing how long to not put a foot down is part of what I call a 'Superman Ride'. This is an urban ride where you do the whole thing without ever putting a foot on the ground, like flying like Superman who never touches the ground while flying, right?
I didn't know it had that name ahaha I'm starting to do it more often :P
2:25 WTF THERE WAS A COUPLE KISSING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BIKE PATH!
Mad editing bro
Your muscles dude...
how far do you drive a bicycle in one day? 20 km? 5 km? 10 km?If you can answer me,if you don't no problem.
I ride between 20-40km everyday.
Why do you Always Change Bikes?
I am not british. When you warned that pedestrian with, "Watch out", didn't they have right of way (in Britian)?, thanks
Loving the crosswalks! ;) haha
I thought the rule for cars was you slow to a stop as soon as someone steps onto the zebra crossing? Isn’t it the same for bikes?
Love your vids
Who holds the handlebar like that?
if you pause at 2:26 you see two couple about to make out
2:26 where two people just standing and kissing, in the middle of the bike lane? wtf?
what kind of electric bike do you have? =)
That bike is not mine but it's a KTM Machina
Yo man you're so fast xD
It's the bike :D
Its electric bike??
Right now 1/2h
Wow they just walk out without looking
Lucky for me I don't have this problem, Pretty much my neighbourhood is a mountain bike park.
How much is a decent electric bike and where in the us can I drive them legally?
Decent between 1500-3000€ and I don't know where you can ride in the US. In Europe I guess in any place a bike can.
some of these moments are really cringy imo :D and i kinda got scared for you when i saw the edit:"yellow" tshirt guy looking at you, it was like you he was going to beat you because you ride a bike xD I wish more cities had roads specialized for bikes :(
AHah if he beat me..uau
Me I cycle on both pavement and roads with cycle lanes or a built up neighbourhood. I won't stop for no pedestrian or red light (because you can easily go through either way)
