      They used Tesla as a clickbait title. Apple is another common use.
      Outrageous price. Expensive even for rich countries. And in those same countries, it is cheaper to buy an scooter. It's not better for the environment but a much better and comfortable way to go from one place to another.

      I think they mean Tesla referring to the model S being like a top notch, high-end super car that is electric and applying that to the world of electric bikes ;)

      Sorry the title is just click bait. It's really just an upper middle of the road electric bike. Tesla is four wheel drive so this bike should have motors at both axles but it doesn't. Tesla is one of the fastest cars on the road while this bike can barely get itself going without pedaling. Tesla has a feature set that Mercedes Benz is having trouble duplicating while this bike has a couple of features. Not really a Tesla.

      @grantwarden7848 7 років тому +4

      Absolutely agreed. Not only is it incredibly ugly and under-engineered, the quoted 75 miles on a charge has to be in the absolute lowest setting possible. While I'm still warming up to e-bikes, there are substantially better offerings out there for even less money. A Trek XM700+ has all the features of this bike (and many, many more) while also being substantially better in just about every way.

    • @jonjonjonnyjon
      @jonjonjonnyjon 8 років тому +28

      Is it though? You have miniaturized electric propulsion and the batteries are built into the frame. It still looks like a normal bike... all the other electric bikes look like a garage science experiment. This one has the benefit of being low-profile, people won't identify it as an expensive electric bike unless they take a close look. Plus this has smart features that no other bike has. They could have specced hydro brakes at that price but for a city bike that isn't going to be seeing much off-pavement riding, there's really no point.

      3000 in my opinion isn't too bad. In big cities like new York this bike would be well worth the money. You can go more places than a motorcycle and the electric assist reduces fatigue. This is for a young business man/woman who doesn't want a full carbon bike (would get stolen in a heartbeat). It's easy to ride and has some comfort features

    It's funny because I live in the netherlands and here biking is a main form of transport. Everywhere is a seperate bike road, beside the road, just for bikes to ride. My bike is also my only transport, i go everywhere with the bike. I think it's in america completely different.

    • @joecleveland6525
      @joecleveland6525 8 років тому +1

      Very few people use a bike as their sole form of transport here in the US (at least where I live in a small college town), and if you are riding a bike where there is no bike lane, you are generally considered a nuisance to drivers. I would say ~35% of the roads in my town have bike lanes, and that is on the high side.I believe the main reason for this is how most people live in the suburbs, many miles outside of the city where they work, often too far to bike.

    • @Crustenscharbap
      @Crustenscharbap 8 років тому +7

      I wish Germany would have such luxury too. Germany pays 0,18€/Year/Inhabitant for bike lanes. Netherlands pays 8,40€ for each.
      Many streets have bike lanes or bike roads. Even some main roads. Often there is absolutely no possibility to get to your destination by bike. So you have to take the car. It highly depends on you location. For example Saxony has amlost no bike lanes. At my 45km tour there were 0% bike lanes. In Berlin around 40% Bike lanes. Island Fehmarn has many bike lanes (around 80%) In comparison with lolland (Denmark) its even low.
      Germany has a huge car industry and I think that they make pressure that bikes will not become a compeditor for cars.

    • @JMichaelGarner

      Very different man. When I ride on the roads without cycling infrastructure (Which is a lot of them) I have to worry about being honked at, buzzed, hit(sometime cars traveling 72kmh+ behind me), cussed at, flicked off, etc. Generally the worse of these actions occur on roads with speeds in excess of about 50kmh.
      But I enjoy my ride most days and am contributing to my health and that of the world we live in.
      Luckily my new town has about 25-35% of roads covered in bike lanes (which are just shoulders on the normal road) so not much complaining here on that. We could still do a lot better though as there are a bunch of dangerous roads and intersections I have to commute through weekly. The U.S. is still designed around the car sadly.

    • @blinky2k2
      @blinky2k2 8 років тому +2

    I've bought but returned my vanMoof electrified S after 3 weeks:
    I love the design, it's a beautiful bike but.....
    - the battery is very limited. max 20-25 km range with maximum support. it drains way too fast.
    - it deals very bad with headwind or uphill (even a small bridge). The power of the motor is very limited.
    - the automatic shifting of the gears is far from subtle and not comfortable.
    - squeaking brakes. They are not hydraulic but lesser quality mechanical disc-brakes
    - Lights won't work when the battery is down. So when your battery is dead you can't drive safe on muscle power in the dark.
    - using the touchscreen is very limited, difficult when driving and doesn't work smooth.
    - the functionality of the app is very limited.
    - the vanMoof support is slow, inadequate and unprofessional
    Overal in my experience the bike is still "under construction" and way overpriced. The price/quality ratio is poor! It doesn't live up to the hype.

I lived in NYC in Greenwich Village and had 3 bikes stolen over the course of 2 years. No matter what lock you use, someone will steal it if they want it bad enough. If not the whole bike, then just parts.

      It's actually a very bad idea. according to physics "Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it transforms from one form to another"
      In a normal bike, legs motion get converted to a kinematic energy directly which move the bike. However, for the same energy if you put a motor that can be charged by legs, the motor will lose much greater energy than normal bike due to heat, sound, internal components,etc which will reduce motor efficiency so it will be harder to move.

    In Europe, ebikes are limited by law to 250 watts. In the US, the limit is usually 750 to 1000 watts, depending on the state. The extra power can come in very handy on a hill. If this bike has a 250 watt motor, that would be a negative. But, I do like the fact that they put the batteries and motor in the tubes. It looks very clean and slick.

      +Jakob Tresch (SirSchaegge) It takes about a day to mount a 49cc motor to just about any bike (including the time to figure out where/how to mount it and then round up the parts) and costs far less. When you're done you have a full-on MoPed that is perfectly street legal (in the US) and you still have about $2600 left to spend on more important things (more, if you buy a used motor).

      Technology gradually gets more affordable, and we have to start somewhere. In 1890, the average price of a typical bicycle was $19.00, which is the equivalent of about $500 in today's dollars. I imagine people scoffed at that too. And if you don't like a rough bicycle ride, take a little bit of air out of the tires until it's more tolerable. If it's still not good enough, then you need a car, or just walk.

All you need is to convert the rotational kinetic energy into electrical energy and store it back into the battery. Cars already do it, so why can't this?

      you can output 0.2kw consistently, and that makes you sweat like a racing horse already.
      it DOES take a lot of effort to charge the battery by pedaling.

    • @beyondfossil
      @beyondfossil 8 років тому +1

      If the pedal crankshaft were connected to charging generator, it would feel like pedaling up a steep hill! That would be *wherever* you pedal even on straight and flat roads -- that's just to generate any useful amount of electrical current to start charging a battery that can propel a bike. The laws of physics are unforgiving and never give us a free lunch unfortunately!
      If the battery were to go depleted while out on the road, the quickest way to get home would be to just pedal the e-bike normally. That would be the most efficient use of the energy stored in our legs.
      On a side note, I've heard some e-bikes can use "regenerative braking" to recapture energy and slow down. But I think a typical bicycle does *not* have enough mass and kinetic energy to justify the added complexity of a regenerative braking system.

    • @076657
      @076657 8 років тому +2

      That would not be a good change. That would mean your energy would be wasted in the process of becoming electric energy being stored and later transformed again into mechanical. Instead of simply being used in real time and wasting 0%.

Who knows what the extra weight of the batter and motor do. I will stick to my specilialed sirrus pro for my 5 mile commute. I truly believe the frame design, carbon fork/seatpost aid in a good combination of nice supple ride and high performance geometry/ergo/weight/power transfer (fun factor).

    What this company is really selling is security. The prospect of always knowing where your bike is and knowing that you're always going to get it back or they'll get you a new one. They probably have built in GPS into each bike. If it's reported stolen, they contact the local authorities and give them the location data. Bike retrieved. It's an electric assist so you still have to pedal for the juice to kick in. It's not so much about the electric assist, it's about the security of the bike.
    Also, lots of people on here commenting on getting a moped or a car. Remember, this is geared for city folk. City people need something that's lightweight that can transport you with no problems for parking or hiking up stairs.
    Don't talk smack about electric bikes unless you've tried one. They're a lot of fun to ride.

    Let me explain something:
    Yes you can buy a car for that price which would be more practical but, this is designed to replace the need for a car when it is only you. A fun, free way of getting too nearer destinations within cities.
    I live in London. A bicycle like this is perfect. Dodge traffic, get some excercise and avoid spending 36% of my paycheck on public transport or my car.
    Do you know how annoying it is sitting at lights constantly. It takes 20 minutes to Stratford from Kings Cross on a good service on the underground. About 26 minutes by car if I am lucky. On an assisted bike, (from my buddies who cycle too but now have go cycles), 15 minutes. How much did it cost them. Nothing to get there. More money for holidays, weekends and family.
    A bike like this will make back it's money and ten fold more saving you from expensive travel. I plan to get an assisted bike and avoid being tired all the time from riding.

As opposed to a 2000USD VANMOOF bike, the ones without any battery assistance, the product is charging for its smooth integrated design, high quality materials etc. Mostly for rich kids or more succesful, upperclass, people as bikes tend to get stolen often here. For your situation it seems like a bike might be a better option but for me, motorcycle beats bicycle and car because you skip all the stop and go traffic by lane splitting.

    How sad people consider buying these bikes. A normal street bike, you know with gears, is all a man needs. These hipsters are trying so hard to be different they are propping up an electric assisted fixed gear industry like the tools they are.

    • @Kendoji1
      @Kendoji1 8 років тому +12

      An electric bike gets me to work and back, which is 65km each day. I couldn't do that on a normal bike, and public transport would take the same time while costing just as much. Good for me, good for the environment, one less car on the road.

    • @deadviper5965
      @deadviper5965 7 років тому

      what does fixed gear have to do with this bike - its barely even a true single speed with the electric boost.

      64 years old i rode over 300 miles on my ebike last year in 2 months if I rode my regular bike I would have rode half that. These bikes shown hear are a bit too pricy for me and no shocks only goes 21 miles an hour . I have a bulls bike that has shocks an goes 28 mph and goes way farther not much more money. The designer is so happy with his bikes it shows good job just bring the price down if he wants to sell any as he has tons of competition at much cheaper price. I think the designer wants to make an ebike that looks like a regular bike this is done at a big cost an lack of features. This stolen bike thing is a joke as cops could give a crap about getting your stuff back they have crimes to solve tickets to write donuts to eat.

    420 watt hours? Best in the industry? Last year around this time, I added a Bafang kit to my touring bike; I selected the 52 volt, 24 Ah battery. This is 1248 watt hours! It would do 38mph on flat roads with no wind. Total cost was about as much as the high end model SmartBike, but it had triple the power and range.

    If I were an investor, this may not be the right company but it's the right idea. Being able to know where all your products are at anytime after point of sale is key to the growth of the idea, product and company. Integrate that data with other data points and you know everything you need to know about your customers.

      You sound like someone who has never ridden an ebike. If you live in a flat area, it makes little difference. But, if you live in a very hilly area like I do, it makes the difference between riding and pushing your bike up a long steep hill. That's nobody's idea of fun or even practical.

    • @muslimun101
      @muslimun101 8 років тому

      +Dan Sanger true that! I dont think this should be marketed to people just biking on flat terrain then? I feel like society will adobt this and get more lazy and less active. But I do understand that in order for it to get cheaper and more affordable for people who actually do need it for hills, more people must buy. Its a integrative world between gas scooters and bicycles i guess, but as a hardcore cyclist, i still hate the idea. And ofcourse we classics will just be ignored and the next generation will innovate and move on just like internet did.

For a lot of people a bicycle isn't only a way of transportation, cycling is something they do in their free time

    An extremely integrated look, even concealing the battery, which normally when concealed, looks like an oversized down tube. Only personal preference for me would be the desire for a sloping top tube. Once I got used to the sloping top tube on my mountain bike (first on my vintage Klein), I can't go back to the intrusive horizontal top tube.
