  • What is exposure therapy for anxiety disorders? Is it the same as CBT?
Exposure is basically a set of techniques within CBT that are used primarily to treat anxiety disorders. When clients do exposure, they work closely with the therapist to face situations, objects, thoughts, etc that make them anxious. The more they do so, the more their anxiety goes down and the more confident they feel in their ability to cope. As such, the vicious cycle of anxiety and avoidance now becomes a virtuous cycle of approach and growth.
